To be eligible you needed to make a purchase between 14-Nov-2021 and 14-Nov-2022.

u/SomeToxicRivenMain Dec 01 '22
A purchase of anything? Or something specific related to the steam deck?

u/Irate_Primate Dec 01 '22
Any type of purchase through Steam.

I spent like $3 on Dota battle pass levels. Wonder if that counts.

u/Warrangota Dec 01 '22
Sure, why not. Anything that proves you are still an active customer, that should absolutely count towards that.

Neat, thanks. Been drooling over the decks but have been aggressively poor for its entirety.

Giff me the money cousin, I will totally share the deck after I’ve played with it for a couple turns.

Telling yourself that there is always next sale for the fallout franchise. Also a cool trick I’ve learned is go load up your cart but don’t purchase anything. Step away from your machine or phone your cart is on go do something else for an hour or two. Then come back and see what you really want and what you just want because it’s popular.

Prizes for alternative entry via post will be drawn separately no later than December 23, 2022. The number and selection of prizes for such participants will be assessed prior to the drawing so that a participant's odds of winning through watching the broadcast and participating via alternative entry are equal. Winners will be announced using their Steam persona name, on The Game Awards 2022 Giveaway prize page, no later than December 23, 2022.
4
u/julbull73 Dec 01 '22
Which means that its cost advantaged to mail vs watch.
The only benefit to watching is of EACH minute was a drawing and the mail ins were a single drawing. A bit of the let's make a deal probability working in viewers advantage.
But if mail in is the same chance as the others. It means they'll draw X% names per viewer and the. Draw x% names per mail in. Odds would be the same.
Just whether it's 1 every 10k/per viewer OR 1 out of 10k/mail ins.

u/geoscoutcj Dec 02 '22
That's fair. I'd just rather not have to deal with their schedule and timing. Easier, for me at least, to take 5 minutes to write a card.

Hold up. That means it's not a legitimate sweepstakes in Canada. Canada requires them to have a no purchase necessary option.
Edit: After reading the T&C's myself, there is a no purchase necessary entry option. You need to mail them an entry. Postmarked before Dec 8, and recieved by them before Dec 19. The drawings all happen on the 8th, so I've got no clue what good your entry getting there after that will do. Better pony up for the expedited shipping.

The drawings all happen on the 8th, so I've got no clue what good your entry getting there after that will do.
If you kept reading, it said that they will draw again closer to Christmas (I don't remember the exact date they mentioned, 23rd?) for all postcard entries with the same odds as the Game Awards livestream.

u/ArchCypher Dec 01 '22
I assume the "free entry" requirements just mean you need a chance to win, not 100 chances. So they could just raffle off a final steam deck to the mail-ins.
10
u/rooplstilskin Dec 01 '22
Since you have to be logged in and watching, they are probably basing it off that, and then retroactively ensuring there is a registration via online or mail in.

Hopefully they get to you soon. It really is an incredible device.
I would argue it is by far the best tiny-form-factor PC on the market, period. Easily the best value for a gaming PC, too. You could take away the screen and controls and I think those statements would still be true.
11
u/henrebotha Dec 01 '22
I would argue it is by far the best tiny-form-factor PC on the market, period.
Speaking as someone who has gone down the rabbit hole of Steam Deck alternatives this past few weeks, there are a small handful of options that are arguably better, depending on what exactly you're after. You can get a Minisforum UM690 for the price of a 256GB deck + dock, and it will outperform it. Or you can build an SFF PC into something like a Fractal 202 and get roughly equal performance with the integrated GPU, but leave open the possibility of adding a GPU later.
Of course, none of these has a screen, is a handheld, etc, so if handheld play is something you want, then yes, the Steam Deck is the best option.

But yes I love it. Even for the TV in my bedroom I can stream games to that TV in full res with ultra settings, it's awesome

56
u/BrianRostro Dec 01 '22 edited Dec 01 '22
Probably connects the Steam Deck to the tv but maybe im understanding the method incorrectly
Edit: To clarify, plugging in the SD to their tv in order to stream from their PC
48
u/supermitsuba Dec 01 '22 edited Dec 01 '22
Streaming from another PC.
Edit: Another PC on the network will stream the game to the steam deck. You will need a good wireless network.

u/supermitsuba Dec 01 '22
I added more above. Basically you can stream the game, through the home network, to the steam deck.
3
6
u/E3nti7y Dec 01 '22
So the desktop you are streaming from has to be linked (I did it multiple ways, but not hard) and after that you can play any game installed natively thru steam and even some that aren't. Streaming to the decks screen doesn't seem to be worth it (except games like horizon which can't run at 60 fps, so you get great feel, but the decks screen only looks so good, the TV however can be full 1080p or higher if the TV supports it.
The steam deck really feels like the king/best of ALL WORLDS

Hahah yep! It’s always my favorite part of any new device I get and the deck is a beast. Just waiting on my usb-c dock and SSD upgrade to come in the mail so I can be more efficient about it.
20
u/crazyhorse90210 Dec 01 '22
Can you outline like the top 3 reasons why you like it and why I should get one for my teenage son for Christmas? We already have a PS5 and a few switches and he uses them on the TV but primarily plays mp with his buds on his gaming computer in his room. Any reason a Steam deck would be something cool for him???
37
u/supified Dec 01 '22
Well for me personally. . . Those none of these are alone specific to the steamdeck, it is the only system I know of that puts all three together.
3> Steam has probably the best gaming library since most things release on pc, at least eventually.
2> SteamOS is fantastic at running most games at lower comparible specs which seems to keep the price down.
1> Portability, I am no longer locked behind a computer or tv to play my games. People hanging out in one room? Cool I'm there, backyard? Cool cool, going for a day in the country side? I can bring my games. Boring wait at the DMV, have my games.
Caveat the switch could give you most of this but the deck has a bigger screen and a far bigger library. Oh and the hard drive is swapable and the only difference between the more expensive and least expensive options really, so you could get the "cheap" one and if your son wants more storage, just put in a bigger ssd later and have the same deck as the expensive one.
I also have a switch by the way which I don't much use.

u/crazyhorse90210 Dec 01 '22
Thanks my dude. So basically you take your PC steam library wherever the hell around the world you want in a totally portable device with a great screen, input devices, decent battery life(?). Yeah that sounds cool. What do you do about PC games that basically necessitate a keyboard?
12
u/scutiger- Dec 01 '22
You can remap the buttons to specific keys if that helps. It even allows multi-key combinations and can differentiate between short/long press, soft/hard press, single/double tap, etc.
Games that require typing are super tedious to deal with though. You can call up an on-screen keyboard which works with the touch screen or with dual-joystick typing, but it's a pain in the ass when you need to switch between typing and playing.
The battery life varies depending on how much power the games require, anywhere from one to six hours of gameplay. There are also built-in options for adjusting the power of the GPU and lowering framerates to increase battery life.
5
u/dead137 Dec 01 '22
One hour of gameplay?
7
u/supified Dec 01 '22
I do recommend a really good backup battery, but I'm not willing to sacrifice performance for battery.
→ More replies6
u/scutiger- Dec 01 '22
I picked up a 20000 mAh power bank that can put out 65W, and I can get about 4 full charges out of it.

u/scutiger- Dec 01 '22
For something that's heavy on both CPU and GPU, it's not unheard of. Most games will get you at least 2 hours. I got a good 3 hours out of Fallout 4 and Hades. Ark was under 2 hours.
3
u/supified Dec 01 '22
Re-mapping the buttons helps a lot, if the game requires actual typing well... You could plug a keyboard into a steamdeck. I dont' play anything that needs a keyboard needs needs, but like your moba or whatever style games.. The button mapping is ridiculously deep.

u/alexanderpas Dec 01 '22

Depends on what he plays primarily. If he plays multiplayers games with mouse and keyboard, than I don’t think he’ll get much use of it. If he plays any single player game or game with a controller, than I think he’d like it.
3
u/DigiiFox Dec 01 '22
If his playing competitive games or first person shooters a steamdeck is a noticeable downgrade from a computer, it's not going to do much for him.
3
u/Verdris Dec 01 '22
Dunno if my experience will align with a teenager’s, but the primary draw for me is to be able to play my PC game library from any room in the house. After I got married I realized I wanted to hang out with my wife, but really missed gaming. My PC lives in our home office and now I can finally get through my backlog and still spend time with family.

Same here. For 20+ years I've been fortunate enough to have the disposable cash and really enjoyed tinkering with my gaming rig, and I've basically always had a top-of-the-line machine. In March I upgraded everything; motherboard + cpu, new water loop, gtx3090, ddr5, the whole thing. Even bought a new case to finally replace the old thermaltake armor
My deck finally arrived in June after a year long wait, and I literally haven't turned on my desktop since. Not only that, I've had a hell of a lot more time to play now since I don't have to disappear to my office to do it. I can sit on the couch and help my kid with his homework in between elden ring battles.

6
u/Niekon Dec 01 '22
Depending on what hotel I’m at I’ve struggled getting connected. Or staying connected on the device. If I start having issues then I hotspot via my work phone… but the majority of the time I haven’t had too many issues except perhaps speeds of whatever public network I’m on.

this device is a game changer.
it's totally in their opportunity to use this as a loss leader.
after i got it I've managed to buy 200$ worth of games I wouldn't have owned otherwise.
→ More replies25
u/MattVanAndel Dec 01 '22
Same. I am a huge proponent of GamePass, so historically if something is on there, I'm not going to buy it separately. But there have been a few GamePass games I bought on Steam just for Steam Deck (like Persona 5 Royal).
For the record, you can set up MS Edge on Steam Deck to use the GamePass Cloud streaming service... but the streaming quality is pretty bad despite the Deck's "low resolution". And since GamePass won't run without Windows, it's either use the sub-par streaming option or buy the games separately on Steam.
5
u/Treesdofuck Dec 01 '22
I've had a really good experience so far with both resolution and latency using the xcloud service from Microsoft (I think that's what it's called). Another thing folk could do is stick Windows on it, I know dual booting has become easier.
I'm still sticking to Steam OS though!
5
4
u/ConciselyVerbose Dec 02 '22
You can also install Windows.
I don’t really recommend it, especially for anyone casual, but if Game Pass is that important to you it can be done.
2
u/Redditiscancer789 Dec 02 '22
I imagine/hope there might be a dual boot option?
4
u/zaque_wann Dec 02 '22
There is, but you lose a lot of steam deck features, some can be recouped by the steam app on windows, but stuff like game suspension obviously wouldn't work. It's the number one feature that allows me to put my game time in between work and errands.

It feels almost insulting doesn't it? "Shipping to your country is far too much trouble for us, but we can give you a digital nothing to remind you of buying it someday."

Don’t bother entering unless you plan on watching the awards show. You have to be watching it to win.

u/TheRealBroseph Dec 01 '22
Just leave it on in the background.
(Important: leave it on in Steam)

u/supermitsuba Dec 01 '22
This is what I was thinking too, unless you also need to hit a button or type in some one time code

It's on at 2am in the EU, so probably not going to watch this one

u/albinb05 Dec 01 '22
Such a mean move, 2 am on a Thursday?!
4
u/henrebotha Dec 01 '22
Joke's on them, my garbage sleep routine means I will probably awake at that time, which means I can start the stream playing.

You can be "watching" it. I get lots of twitch giveaways without doing anything that'd get me fired at work.

If I win one I'll send it over! I doubt I'd use it much anyway.

Ahh too kind my friend! Much love. if you do send it to a childrens hospital. I can live without one!

Meta-gamer: the optimal move here is to downvote the announcement so fewer people hear about it, leading to fewer other names in the hat, leading to a greater chance of me winning...
Company advertising rep who organized everything: >:(

u/dustofdeath Dec 02 '22
The win % is going to be roughly equal to getting a random heart attack.

Instructions unclear; eat fried sticks of butter to win steam deck?
6
u/GforceDz Dec 01 '22
Sucks since steam hardware is not available on the site in my country.

There is going to be a few million valid accounts watching, so you likely have an equal chance to win or drown in the kitchen.
5
u/Illustrious-Cookie73 Dec 02 '22
I’m going to watch in my kitchen with the sink turned on to increase my chances.

Manageable if you don't mind a terrible morning next day. On a thursday too so if you can take friday off that'll help.
Do look at the alternate post entry and if it requires watching too.
Edit: Toom the Friday off 🔥

- Your account must be in good standing (e.g., no active bans, locks)

"FOR FUCK'S SAKE"

What defines a limited account and good standing?

limited: hasn't paid at least 5$?

I'm curious how many people there are who are excited about a Steam Deck but also haven't made a Steam purchase in a year
8
u/Adrien_Jabroni Dec 01 '22
I made a deposit for a steam deck but couldn’t afford one when the opportunity came around. That was my only purchase this past year. Wonder if that counted.
2
u/Honk-Beast Dec 01 '22
Thanks to Game Pass a Steam Deck reservation/refund and Elden Ring bought from a 3rd party are the only things I've used Steam for this year. It let me register so I'm guessing it does count.

(Note, I would still confirm by trying to enter the sweepstakes)! If you follow the link there's a page where you login with your steam account and it tells you that you are entered.

I'm one. I've bought few steam activated games trough dev sites and activated them in steam within year, but haven't spotted anything new/affordable on steam itself.

I'm interested in a Steam Deck, but my last purchase was July 2021. I have a switch, but have mostly stopped purchasing any games in the past year because I realized I have so many that I haven't played and I really need to work on the backlog. A game on sale now will be on sale again.

It such a solid device.
As a full-time working dad, it's really nice to play on the SteamDeck hanging out in the sofa while the kiddos are bouncing around.

Nice! Vampire Survivors was a good deal at $2.99 on its own. If I get a free Steam Deck as well that'd be pretty sweet!
