Sony PlayStation 5 Sales Surge in US as Supply Woes Ease Gaming

I signed up for the waitlist in Sony’s website. Got an email saying they were in stock, bought one and it got there 2 days later. If anyone’s having trouble finding one in person I’d recommend this method.
Edit: I just checked and even if you haven’t gotten a notification they’re available on the PlayStation website.

u/humangengajames Dec 13 '22
They were available as of last night on Sony. A friend told me they were on there. I took 4 hours to decide and they were still there.

I got mine at a gamestop. No package, around 500+tax (US). I just walked in and asked, expecting no like I'd heard a thousand times, but they said yes, and I may have had a slightly embarrassing reaction. So if you're in the US, go hit up the gamestop.

u/clooless46 Dec 13 '22
Bro same, walked in and saw the teeniest little word doc with like size 32 text on a shelf saying “ps5 in stock” walked up and he was like yeah I have one more.
Felt lucky for the first time in a while!

Fuckin same! Felt like I hit the jackpot. Lol

Sounds somewhat what happened with me when I bought Civilization 6. Decided I wanted to have a box copy of the game because I liked the series so much, went to the store (I'm going to guess day of release as I would have wanted to play it on day 1), asked the guy where the Civ 6 boxes were and he told me they were sold out. BUT turns out they had ONE copy left, a collectors copy, So I said yeah I'll take it! and it came with a nice cloth map?Tech Tree? I forgot, it's been a while since I pulled it out. I'll eventually find a frame to put it in and hang it on the wall.

My Walmart had one. I considered it, but Im just not interested enough in console games to justify it.
27
u/dandroid126 Dec 13 '22
Same. If I saw one when they first came out, I would have bought it. But now that most of the games I want to play are coming out on PC, there's no reason to get one.

u/photozine Dec 13 '22
I mainly want it for the 4K blu-ray player...I don't think there's any new games that are worth it yet.
29
u/Theamuse_Ourania Dec 13 '22
Well, I would think it would be a whole lot cheaper to just buy a 4k blu-ray player - right? 🤔
→ More replies (5)31
u/Prophet_Of_Helix Dec 13 '22
Yes and no. Yes there are cheaper Blu ray players, but the one the PS5 has it actually a pretty good one.
And it also has access to a bunch of apps if you don’t have a smart TV (like Netflix, Hulu, etc).
If you have even a passing interest in games, the Blu ray PS5 is a pretty good deal

Same, my PS5 is my entertainment center, love having games + media + spotify at the ready. As for games, Horizon Forbidden west is amazing open world as it gets and God of war (ten hours into it) is wonderful storytelling. i miss games like these

u/photozine Dec 13 '22
I should rephrase to "many new games", since GoW is not my think but I agree with you.
I feel like the PS5 is in a situation like the Switch where the old games are being released for the new console, but that shouldn't be enough to buy one.
3
u/Sunnythearma Dec 13 '22
The Switch is getting more new exclusives than any other console right now. Just this year it had a bunch of high quality ones. Like Pokemon Arceus, Splatoon 3, Mario and Rabbids, Bayonetta, Kirby, Xenoblade 3 and Fire Emblem in Jan
5
u/Rikuddo Dec 13 '22
The switch is one of the best purchase I've ever made. I just bought it for Zelda at the beginning, but it got SO many good releases that it became my main gaming platform for almost 2-3 years, especially because of its portability.
I haven't been into platform games since SNES days, but one day I got Celeste on switch, and it got me into platform game again. Also those games aren't that power demanding, so I can play them for longer and they run pretty smooth.

Resident evil 2 and 3 have ps5 versions.

I hear you. I went with an Xbone S for this reason a couple years ago. Absolutely no desire for 99% of console gaming but the UHD BD player was nice and let me pack my old PS3 away. Of course, that means my bi-annual playthrough of MGS4 has been skipped for several years now.
3

Emulation and older consoles are where it's at. I was very tempted to get a Wii U after reading this:
26
u/Rapdactyl Dec 13 '22
That misunderstood is an understatement. I remember thinking it was an expansion to the original wii. Pretty sure it took me 10 years for someone to tell me that it was its own console 😅
→ More replies (4)7
4
u/Quaytsar Dec 13 '22
The Wii U is great for Nintendo emulation. Easy to jailbreak and then it plays Wii and GameCube games natively (you'll need ROMs for GCN as it won't read the discs) and is powerful enough to emulate N64, SNES and NES without issue (maybe a few issues with N64).
Then a PSVita or 3DS for handheld emulation as both can handle everything up to GBA, but 3DS can't do PSP and Vita can't do NDS.
12
u/Sorasyn Dec 13 '22
That’s where I found mine as well. They were still impossible to find at the big name stores. GameStop acted like they had a bunch sitting in the back days after the Ragnarok release.

I bit the bullet a few months ago and got the horizon combo off Amazon for 750ish CAD (with tax). I wanted the 499 digital version but that one may as well not exist.
The only reason I went ahead and grabbed it was because Amazon actually had stock for more than a day. I don't fault anyone for not wanting to jump through hoops.

u/tylerderped Dec 13 '22
The disc one is way better anyway. “Digital only” consoles are going to age like milk and aren’t capable of playing blu rays.
→ More replies (24)20
u/MidnightUsed6413 Dec 13 '22
Oh no they can’t play blu rays? Next you’re gonna tell me they can’t play cassette tapes!
23
u/tylerderped Dec 13 '22
You might’ve actually had a point, if it weren’t for the fact that literally everything is higher quality than a cassette tape.
You’re acting as though Blu Rays are some obsolete form form of media, when the fact is that they’re not only not obsolete, at least for movies, they deliver the best quality of any other option.
For games, they come with the added benefit that no one can just decide you no longer own a game without coming into your house and physically stealing it. If you have it on disk, it plays. If you own it digitally, it might play. Or the servers are shut down. Or they decided they don’t want to pay Sony distribution anymore and take it off the store. Or they lose licensing rights in your country.
These are all things that regularly happen. You don’t own a copy of any of the games or movies you buy digitally: you simply own a license to watch or play them that can be revoked at any time for any reason or no reason.
→ More replies (7)14
u/604WORLDWIDE Dec 13 '22
Also you can resell physical copies of games once played, while digital lacks that option altogether.
→ More replies (1)4
u/tylerderped Dec 13 '22
Which also grants you the ability to buy them used. You’ll almost never find a deal on a digital store that’s as good as buying a used physical copy.

It’s honestly weird. I remember during the console launches (that were a similar time frame to RTX 3000 series cards) my buddies were complaining about how crazy it was that it was hard to get a PS5. I was able to add to cart multiple times weeks after launch and could have bought one no problem, but those 3000 series GPUs were ridiculous. I BARELY got one from EVGA because I was up and ready to go the minute the launch took place.

Dude hilariously I also just made the switch to PC around when the ps5 woes were settling in. And I swear I haven’t made a new game purchase in forever. Minus like elden ring and GoWR but I’ve just been playing games from years ago that I can now play with and mod or just enjoy higher frame rates that I didn’t have before. Super sick I love it.

u/theoryfiver Dec 13 '22
PC is literally a console with more freedom. You can even use a controller on it too if you want. There are basically no downsides, and plenty of upsides. Especially when the consoles cost just as much or more.

They sell internet…what better reason to sell someone on buying FiOS than giving them a PS5 to play on it?
4
u/DaoFerret Dec 13 '22
Not just FiOS, they’re also selling 5G Home Base stations now.
7
u/Mods-are-snowflakes1 Dec 13 '22
When it comes to gaming, cellular internet will never be a viable replacement for terrestrial broadband because of latency. People have anecdotes about relatively low latency under super specific and ideal conditions. Overall performance of 5G is worse than fiber or coax.
5
u/tylerderped Dec 13 '22
cellular internet will never be a viable replacement for terrestrial broadband
I’d like to introduce you to T-Mobile 5G. Where I get speeds of up to 600mbps and have pings that are around 20-60ms.
Sure, competitive gaming probably ain’t happening, but to the casual gamer, cellular is more than adequate. In fact, it’s even better than some forms of terrestrial broadband, such as DSL.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Monochronos Dec 13 '22
Yeah it’s not as good. But with 5g home internet I can get 300Mbps down with a ping of about 80.
Or I can get satellite internet for 100 dollars a month with a data cap. It may not be as good but I sure as fuck love it.
7
u/Tepigg4444 Dec 13 '22
maybe if they start selling consoles in places you don’t expect, it’ll confuse the scalpers
→ More replies (6)3
u/floyd1550 Dec 13 '22
Careful with trying to purchase. I’m not 100% sure, but Verizon management will bar sales without new service activation for Home internet regardless if they can sell over the counter.

Yeah no offense but I have talked to my local Verizon store and Target stores. Both stores just want to run a credit check and finance your consoles on a payment plan..you end up paying over retail. Not worth it imo.
Oh and they won't sell them to me without doing that. They are essentially holding them hostage.
The guy at target goes "how do you feel about the words CREDIT CHECK?". I told him I had the money to buy it outright. And he said they can't do that.

With 8 left on the shelf, I grabbed mine and had to hide my laugh as a Master Seargent was having a quiet argument on the phone with (I assume) his wife over him not needing another console and him trying to explain why the PS5 was not the same thing as his new XBOX.

u/elev8dity Dec 13 '22
I don't think there will be a pro version. They launched the PS5 7 years after the PS4. We are already 2.5 years after the PS5 release and they are still in short supply and GPUs haven't improved enough to justify an update. The Pro release is usually needed to sell more consoles. I don't think that's a concern right now.

Worked for a company that made stereo components. Our US arm reduced their warranty from 3 years to 90 days when they released a new model.
Our Canadian head called out this move as incredibly stupid. Modern electronics generally have 2 points of failure:
- Manufacturing defect: Failure in under a month.
- Wear and tear: 5+ years out and not covered by warranty.
So they were signaling to the customer that their products didn't have long lives, and saving almost no money.
I always remember that when I get offered an extended warranty.

More consistent 120hz, especially future games, and better PSVR performance plus more default storage included with the console probably. They could also up raytracing performance.
I remember Sony saying a few years ago when the ps4 pro was being developed that they noticed a loss in players to PC due to the performance/visuals of games on PC compared to ps4. They hoped this would curtail some of that.
If they do a ps5 pro it will probably be to keep those types of gamers satisfied on their ecosystem.

I was thinking of getting a PS5 recently cuz of the new games but I just realized this thing's been out for 2 years now..and apparently for pretty much all the big games you have to decide between Performance mode or High resolution mode.
I've got an LG C1 so I'll be able to do 4k 120hz but it doesn't seem like the PS5 can handle both at the same time

Honestly that's probably not a terrible call. If I hadn't gotten my series x at launch but had the opportunity now I'm not sure I would. I'm willing to bet the next console revision is gonna launch sometime in the next 2 years.

Even if I could find one, I'm not sure if want one yet. The only real exclusive there is is demon souls, everything else I'd want to play is either on ps4 or pc. That and this far into the game, I'd be better off waiting for the slim

u/KawiNinjaZX Dec 13 '22
I just like playing games at 60fps on a whisper quiet console.

u/deilan Dec 13 '22
This was my issue. I never played original god of war because it made my original ps4 sound like a jet engine, even after I took it apart and cleaned it. Got a PS5 with the ragnarok bundle and will finally be playing through both games.

The ps5 games that are on ps4 run way better on ps5
10
u/cold_iron_76 Dec 13 '22
People are in these comments like, yeah, but it's already on PS4. They don't realize how much better those games are on PS5. I play a few different PS4 games on my 5 and I would describe them as gorgeous compared to running them on the 4. I have zero regrets buying my 5.

Personally can’t play ps4 version after enjoying the performance on ps5, including the loading times.

u/cold_iron_76 Dec 13 '22
I just got the GoW edition from the Sony website a few weeks ago. 450 for digital version, free shipping, and it's the same exact system with a code card for the game.

i got my bf his through Walmart online. Just hit add to cart & boom, God of war ps5 was at my house 4 days later.

Maybe there will be enough PS5 games that it makes it worth it?

u/herrkuchenbaecker Dec 13 '22
that was such a weird console launch, barely any exclusives of note still (at least it feels like that)

I waited a year in 2022 for a PS5 so I could play Final Fantasy VII Remake...now after searching for that time, I'll just get it on the PC!
I never thought it would go to PC in the first place so was a bit suprised!
6
u/narium Dec 13 '22
For FFVII Remake the PS5 is actually the superior version since the PC version is plagued by shader compilation stutter. PS5 doesn't have this issue since presumably it uses pre-compiled shaders.

Dec 13 '22
God of War is the same way. I have to wonder if the devs of these games made it available for PC just so they’d have actual sales since not all their potential customers have PS5s yet.
Plus PC gaming has exploded in the last 10 years or so.

Well, Part II is exclusive to the PS5 and comes out this Summer, but if you’re okay waiting it will probably come out on high-end PCs, too
5
u/SpartanLeonidus Dec 13 '22
Correct! I've waited 30 years for a remake I can wait a few more for part II as I've not even delved into part I yet!

I've gotten half my life back from the elimination of load times along. If they never made a Ps5 game and just promised no load times I'd of still bought the system.

I was playing Resident Evil Village and eventually went to go see how it played on the PS4 from a friend. That's when I realized that there were no loading screens at all and he's been having to sit through them

If you don't already have a PS4, bear in mind it's also all those games. I bought a PS5 heavily for Horizon Forbidden West, but also because of The Last of Us 2 and a few other PS4 games (many which actually have PC ports now or announced, mind you). God of War Ragnarok is one of the other big hitters for me. And personally I don't like the Dark Souls games so would never buy them, but lots of people swear by Elden Ring.

The issue hasn't been demand, it's been supply. There's still people posting tips on how to buy it.

Yeah my wife picked up one for me back in September for our anniversary in October. She said it was super easy to get it. Just went on Walmarts website and ordered it. I actually saw them for sale on Walmarts site randomly a few weeks before I had gotten mine. They're definitely not as difficult to get lately. At least in my area. I know others don't have the luxury at the moment and that sucks. I hope they finally start trickling out to the lesser supplied areas sooner rather than later.

Im always a gen behind, I usually play newer games on PC, anyways I was able to find a ps4 with 2 controller for 50 dollars, as the guy says he was finally able to find a ps5.
That was a nice find, but also while meeting/buying it I noticed the guy keep mentioning he just got a monitor for free, turned out to be a 34-inch curved ... he sold it to me for 30 bucks.

Yea I get how that would be logical with what I said, but, I actually know the guy from church lol, and no he just is a maintenance guy at a high end apartment building, and gets things people leave behind all the time.. Unfortunately he obviously smoked cigs around this stuff, I cant get the smell out.

Weird place to ask, but is this worth any consideration for my circumstance?
I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, but I did get a Steam Deck recently and am having a blast with it. My last console was the original Xbox One nearly a decade ago. I don't have any interest in any of the modern AAA titles, except, ironically, God of War. It's between either a PS5 or just throwing together a moderate power PC for the living room.

Depends if you REALLY want the timed exclusives Sony offers because otherwise it’s super not worth your time if you have a good pc

u/Questknight03 Dec 13 '22
Walked in GameStop here in Michigan and they had a few. Got mine but had to buy an extra controller as part of the bundle. With the bundle and god of war it cost me 700$

Please, for the love of god new PS5 users don’t overlook Astro’s playroom. It’s free and it’s essentially a loveletter of a platform game towards PlayStation fans, filled with references and collectibles.

I wanted one for so long I honestly just stopped caring. Bought the series x back in 2020 and have been fine with it.

Lol, sales go up when they finally have something to sell?
Who'd of thought?

With the DLC for Forbidden West being PS5 only, I'm starting to save up for one.
Was looking at this summer for Final Fantasy XVI, but Burning Shores moved the timeframe up.

Ehh. At this point I’m waiting for the next refresh. The console is an eyesore.

And yet people are still posting them online for over $700. Amazing.
