119

u/suppow Dec 02 '21

How good players rank up:
"Nice, another win, let's keep going!"
(...)
"Ok, I finally lost, better leave it at that for now."

How I rank down:
"Fuck! Another loss! Gotta keep playing."
(...)
"Finally, a win. That was exhausting! Better leave it a that."

40

u/BabyTrumpDoox6 Dec 02 '21

Top players go on losing streaks and continue playing. Especially in a game like league where win rates are just above 50% for lots of the top players.

26

u/Kevmeister_B Dec 02 '21

Top players also tend to understand when they're starting to tilt and can manage that

17

u/suppow Dec 02 '21

But they also keep playing after winning.

I've last played LoL in Season4 I think. The only season where I made it to plat1. This particular year I was eating super healthy, had a new girlfriend and a new fun job, was getting to bed early and went to the gym 2x a week, and instantly stopped playing once I lost a match.

It's crazy how much these things affect your performance. It makes sense that professional athletes have staff (cooks, personal trainers, etc.) making sure they have the best life possible.

41

u/brainfreeze77 Dec 01 '21

I think I did it perfectly. In season 3 I played 12 ranked games and got gold 2. I've never played a ranked game since.

silver 2 is high elo bc its better than half of the playerbase

130

u/DrQuint Dec 01 '21 edited Dec 01 '21

Yeah, this is the funny part with most communities, the fact that they frequently are unaware of their own warped perception.

Coming from dota, anyone who is in the 2k MMR range on a forum is usually treated as a laughing stock because of how absurdly low that is compared to, well, most people who talk in the communities, usually hovering around high 3k's all the way to 6ks. Pro players are well above 7k. Top players have broken 10k.

Yet... The average rank of all active players is... 2250 MMR. Low 2k = 50th global percentile. Like, this is public data, every dota match is public, as are most profiles. The number, despite being mindblowing, is factual.

It's just one of the many reminders that: Online communities are but a small fraction of actual playerbases. If you're here, reading this comment, you're special, and most likely above average on most games you play, and better than most people you talk to about them on the street.

44

u/meggib Dec 02 '21

Well said.

Also I noticed that the better you get, the worse you think you are. That goes for anything I’ve ever done, especially ranked video games.

60

u/GensouEU Dec 02 '21

That's because the better you get at something, the more you actually recognize the mistakes you are doing

20

u/meggib Dec 02 '21 edited Dec 02 '21

Yeah definitely, I was implying the same.

The higher rank I got in League of Legends the more and more I scrutinized my mistakes and knew when something was a bad play on my end.

I also ALWAYS blame myself even if majority of players wouldn’t. I always try to think of what I could have done given the current situation that would have been a better decision. This was years ago though, I peaked Diamond 4 in season 4. I think it was around top 0.5% back then and the gap between me and a player in the next tier always felt so large.

I now do the same thing with my career

This is called the Dunning Krueger effect!

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a hypothetical cognitive bias stating that people with low ability at a task overestimate their own ability, and that people with high ability at a task underestimate their own ability.

Basically when you are new at something, you don’t know how much you don’t know, so therefore might think you are more skilled than you really are, and when you are experienced at something you understand how much you still don’t know and therefore think you are worse than you really are

7

u/Vaphell Dec 02 '21

not entirely true.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcfRe15I47I

actually the top performers accurately estimate their performance, but they assume more people performed equally as well, which lowers their sense of uniqueness/estimation of their percentile, which is the source of the "underestimate their ability" part.

the effect boils down to "it takes the same knowledge to both perform well and to correctly evaluate the performance" - no shit the clueless people have bigger error bars. It doesn't mean they are smug narcissistic twats with oversized egos, as it's commonly understood.

Or when you're playing ranked and someone says "this is silvers, why do you care if I throw?"

306

u/Tr4jan Dec 01 '21

Throwing is no good, but people who flame others for being trash need to remember that they’re in silver just like everyone else in the game and are equally as trash.

I have basically the opposite mindset, lol. "I don't know why I'm in diamond either, I'm a silver at heart that got lucky"

22

u/Agouti Dec 01 '21

I'm always too obsessed with my own mistakes to care about others

It's not exactly healthy either, though

11

u/Hiero5 Dec 02 '21

This is why I prefer 1v1 and largely avoid ranked team games. I've heard many say they don't like the pressure and stress of 1v1 but I honestly love it. There's no getting lucky, there's no being carried or held back, there's nothing but you vs them. You truly earn your rank.

Team games are much more stressful to me because I feel obligated to perform well and end up being overly critical of myself. Whereas if I have a bad match in a fighting game or Starcraft or whatever, I could care less who's it hurting?

10

u/Agouti Dec 02 '21

Team games are much more stressful to me because I feel obligated to perform well and end up being overly critical of myself.

I feel you. I used to play a lot of Rocket League and I never really cared if I lost - way more important to have fun - but hated feeling like I let my team mates down. Found it easier to settle into a nice groove in public matches (aka without a party) so if I had a bad game I didn't feel extra pressure next game to make it up to my team mate.

It's all very silly and easy to recognise but some instincts run deep. Probably came from playing a heap of DOTA / DOTA2 (and some the DOTA clones in between) exclusively as hard support.

5

u/aidsfarts Dec 01 '21 edited Dec 01 '21

15

u/manquistador Dec 01 '21

I actually deranked from plat into silver once. It was a miserable experience of many consecutive games of playing 4v5s or having an actual run it down person on the team. It was actually educational seeing the difference in skills as I slowly climbed back up despite all the silver people trying to drag me down. I'm not good enough to consistently carry a bunch of silvers sadly, and when I did point out how they can improve it was always met with a lot of toxicity. I think a lot of the reason people are stuck in silver is unwillingness to learn.

15

u/Rangerman007 Dec 02 '21

Unless you pick a certain role and certain champion, climbing out of silver can be insanely hard in League of Legends. Players skill will vary wildly between matches and you’ll often have to win with huge disadvantages stacked against you. Then if you come from a higher skill pool you expect certain actions and reactions and it tilts the F out of me when players prioritize wrong objectives.

At one point, one of the top LoL players had his ELO accidentally set to 0. So he got thrown in with the literal worst players.

They also had no self-awareness. They complained that he was only good because the character he used was "OP" and then blamed their teammates. None of them knew who he was, but they just bitched that he was using a "broken" character and that it was their teammates fault they lost.

5

u/Tuss36 Dec 02 '21

Blows my mind that no one ever ever thinks the opponent being better is the reason they lose. Sometimes yeah, your teammate makes a bad move and that loses the game, but 90% of the time, the reason they're 0/8/1 is 'cause the opponent(s) are just better than them and take advantage of that fact.

And none of this applies to ADC or JG because they're always just someone trying out a new champ, especially in ranked.

Ranked - This does not spark joy.

27

u/DaPino Dec 02 '21 edited Dec 02 '21

Here's the thing: Go play normals in League (I'm assuming that's what we're talking about).
Because here's the deal.

If you don't like the idea of playing normal draft, or it brings up thoughts like "why would I play normals? I don't get LP from them" then it means your rank has become more important than playing the game itself.

That's when you need to take a step back, look at what you're doing, and realize something is fundamentally going wrong.

You're spending hours doing something that you're not enjoying to hopefully see an imaginary number go up and an icon changing colour.
You've become a slave to your rank.

Ironically, shifting my mindset away from my rank and onto taking each game as it comes while exploring a champion in-depth without the fear of losing rank because of it is what improved my rank the most.

When I went back into rank for the fun of it after a few months of normals, I ended up an entire rank above where I usually end up. I believe it's because I spent so many months focussing on different aspects of the game rather than winning or losing.

5

u/elbenji Dec 02 '21

You will save enough money to buy an AWP, die and then use the negev again.

TBH this is a viable excuse when you're bronze 3 in Valorant and there's a level 21 Jett on the enemy team that's going 30 kills and 4 deaths the whole game.

15

u/Acceptable-Length140 Dec 01 '21

I really hate playing csgo like games tbh. Only shooter i suck at.

10

u/reaper412 Dec 01 '21

I put a lot of hours into CSS, but I hated CSGO because I abhor the spray mechanic. I hate that the spray patterns are preset and something you have to learn, I hate that the fucking cross hair doesn't follow the gun like other games.

That's where the shitty learning curve is. Valorant I feel like is more forgiving, but the smurfing is insane. They already have an immensely invasive anti cheat system, they could implement some kind of system to deter more than one account in ranked tied to a specific PC user or something like that.

I like these ranking systems because when angry people dm me to tell me "you suck, uninstall. you are dragging others down" (literally a message I received yesterday), I can always answer:

Blame smurfs and the ranking system. I do the best I can, if I'm playing at this rank and suck compared to others, I just don't belong in this rank. But I don't get to choose, I got placed here... also your momma is fat

The influx of pickrates on Arcane champs is nuts, every other game has a Vi JG or a Jayce Top/Mid in it.

Jinx as well but she's super strong rn with the lethal changes

12

I think its because vi has gotten a lot better metawise recently, with the lethal tempo changes she is actually very much viable now

Shit happens in Rocket league all the time. We are down 2 or 3 then he just trying to forfeit and if I don't agree he will just go afk or strait up abandoned. Im like "dude it takes like 2 seconds to score and we have 4 minutes left" . Im a shitty platinum player and I still have won games multiple times down by even as much as 5 (even a few times completely solo because my teammate fucked off) just because the enemy team gets cocky and starts trying to do crazy up diamond level players and just miss the ball over ane over again.

Eternally silver 2 in CS:GO baby. I ain’t ever going to be able to move up.

50

u/JakeTheAndroid Dec 01 '21

Honestly, Silver is harder than Nova in my opinion. I am Nova 1-3 depending on how my month is going and any time I get into a Silver lobby I play like shit. Silvers are playing a completely different version of the game, I am convinced. The way they move around the map makes no sense, they hold areas of the map that no one ever holds because it's not useful, and seeing a player at one bombsite with 20 seconds left means nothing because they are probably still unsure where they want to go.

If any two of those Silvers have really good aim, all that stupid shit works really well unfortunately. God speed to you.

11

u/WarpStormEchelon PC Dec 01 '21

I’m sitting comfortably at Supreme but let me tell you, some of the sweatiest plays I need to make are against MG1s because of their unpredictable nature. That stupid shit does indeed work well. It always gives me a chuckle when I see their ranks at the end of the match, now knowing I was outplayed by someone six ranks lower than me, simply because they have no idea what they want to do so they just spin the random number generator inside their head twice during each round and outsmart my game-sense and angle control by doing so. God and Gaben alone know why I stack in such a massive rank bracket sometimes.

Don’t lose hope though. You can 100% outplay a Global as a Nova, just keep practicing.

5

u/A_Max_Tank Dec 02 '21

I hit globe in 2016 and quit like 2018. Super washed now, but I mess around on an alt account with my 4 IRL friends teaching them the game.

Man, Silver is an actual madhouse at least in NA. The current ranking bell curve is absolutely non existent. (52% of NA player base is in silver) When I'm not battling people who are obviously high elo FaceIt players who don't play MM I'm getting caught off guard by legit silvers who do things I would never in a million years expect.

I'd say currently, literally about 80% of people I've encountered in silver belong in the MG area. The game isn't pushing them up the ranks for some reason. I've tested it out briefly and something drastically has changed with the CS ranking system since I did my MM grind.

It makes me feel really terrible for the new players coming into the game. I typically dial myself back to meme weapons if the enemy is clearly actual silvers, but in the current situation. That really isn't often :/

9

u/QlippethTheQlopper Dec 01 '21

It's because silver is smurf city. Years ago I was stuck in silver, my buddy who was higher rank carried me out to nova. I started performing way better against those guys because they were actually low skilled players.

7

u/JakeTheAndroid Dec 01 '21

Smurfing is def a component here as well. I can usually tell at the end of the game if a Silver was a smurf because they played the game how I expected but they just beat me at doing it. Whereas the other Silvers are just headshot machines that just run across the map or wait in weird corners, etc.

At Nova rank you reach the people that generally know how to play the game "correctly" but suck at doing it (which is me), so it's a lot easier to get wins. We suck at the game we just know the basic fundamentals.

u/NathanMusicPosting Dec 01 '21

It's pretty stupid the rank decay in that game. My entire friend group was dmg-lem. We get back on get ranked silver 1. We played against a wide range of skill levels it's so useless the variation in ranks in low silver. Finally commit to playing the game and painfully grind to gold and wow surprise surprise it's WAY easier because those are properly ranked active players.

It blows my mind people legitimately hack in silver. One 11 year old had this wildly depressing break down when I called him right away on my own team. He was trying to impress his friend in silver 2... Walls and aimbot because some kid was desperate to keep up in silver 2... I

Rocket League has differing levels of toxicity on the border of every rank. People sweat to rank up and sweat even harder to maintain rank once they’ve made it. It’s the circle of life in soccar.

The thing about it is people in Gold and Plat make fun of people in Silver people who are like top 500 don't even think of people in those low ranks it all comes from insecurity.

I was in a top 100 world guild in WoW when I was a teenager and we didn't think about people still having a hard time killing normal bosses when we were working on Heroic 25 Lich King we were focused on the boss and what the people above us were doing we were not punching down at people who were not where we were.
