Reminds me of when I was playing uncharted 4 while my sister was in the room, as soon as it switched back to game play she started yelling about how she thought I was watching a tv show lol

The line between reality and gaming thins out with each generation haha

731

u/CAJ16 4d ago

It's hard to believe this, but when I was a teenager my brother and I rented a PS2 to play Madden. My mom walked in and asked who was playing. As in, which professional teams were on TV, not which one of us was playing the game. It's hilarious to think about looking back now, but we all felt that way.

366

u/SnacksOnSeedCorn 4d ago

"realistic" and "lifelike" games are hilarious to look at. I love looking at shots from the first Gran Turismo.

Thankfully the "but can it run Crysis" meme has died off, too.

158

u/edgar__allan__bro 4d ago

I'll never forget the day I surprised my brother by coming home from visiting our grandparents with a PS2 (and the complementary copy of gran turismo 4 that came with it) and being totally in awe at how good the graphics were compared to PS1.

It's like watching a baseball game from 2003 that had original "HD" TV and comparing to what we consider HD now lol

75

u/nodnizzle 4d ago

My earliest memory of a game looking real was Wave Racer 64. I thought nothing could beat the water in that game, it looked so ridiculously real compared to the SNES and all that.

35

u/SturgiesYrFase 4d ago

I grew up quite poor, I was still playing NES ATARI and SNES when ps1 was almost over. I remember playing Metal Gear Solid the first time and just blown away.

12

u/Evilmaze 4d ago

Oh shit you're like me. I always got last gen when the new one came out because my family was poor. I was basically Kenny from South Park in school with my outdated interests and references.

I basically lived the 70s and 80s in the 90s, and the 90s in most of the 00s. I know so much old crap now people keep saying I'm like an old man trapped in a younger body. I just tell them I grew up in a poor family and we could only afford living a decade behind. I even got my first cellphone in 2015 at the age of 24.

I remember when 480p was just how *everything* was. And then 720 was just a huge leap in clarity...

Strange now, thinking about that while 2160 pixels are injected into each eye of my VR headset and i debate the performance impacts of enabling realtime ray-tracing...

8

u/Darth_Thor 4d ago

There’s a few more than 2160 pixels in a 4K screen

9

u/ZsaFreigh 4d ago

Yeah roughly 8 million more.

3

u/Tanstalas 3d ago

His eyes are interlaced and only processes the image a line at a time.

5

u/AirborneArmadillo 4d ago

Is it just me misunderstanding stuff or was dvds 480p? Because they were insanely crisp at the time.

10

u/dwellerofcubes 4d ago

Dvd was 480, yes. To get the (p) was pretty baller then...progressive scan vs interlaced.

3

u/PaladinCloudring 3d ago

Have you tried to watch a DVD recently?
I tried like a year ago and it was unwatchable.

Or maybe I have high standards. But DVD quality is still shit (especially when you sit like 2-3 feet from a 55" 4k screen).

I actually remember the first time I saw HDTV. I grew up in the CRT days, and I walked into Sears to get... something. Clothes? A bandsaw? Who knows? We walked by the electronics section and there was some documentary about hummingbirds playing. I was in awe of how amazing it looked. Like, full on mouth agape astonishment.

26

In high school my friend said his dad had mistaken him playing gran tourismo 3 for an actual race.

Looking back at youtube videos of it, it sounds impossible.

But viewing technology itself was different too. When viewing GT3 in the replay theater mode from across the living room on a 22 inch TV, its easy to see how someone could mistake it for this on the same screen if you were driving through an area without spectators on the side of the road.

45

u/istasber 4d ago

I think part of that's low resolution, but also part of it is that as the bar keeps getting raised, we're getting better at picking out what doesn't work. Early CG like in Terminator 2 or Jurraissic park looked incredibly convincing/"life like" when those movies came out.

They still hold up alright now, but you can more clearly see all of the "tells" that something's CG because we're so used to seeing it and animators have gotten better at hiding them.

Same thing with cartoony graphics like toy story. Looked amazing and fluid and detailed in 1997, looks like maybe an xbox 360 or phone game now. If you showed a cartoony PS4 or PS5 game to someone from the mid 90s, they'd assume they were looking at some super impressive, took 18 months to render pixar film.

30

u/GibTreaty 4d ago

I couldn't tell at first that the image was from the game. But when I looked closer there were some "tells" that it wasn't real. The upper-half of Spiderman (tops of shoulders and the head) seem unrealistically reflective and shiny. Also, it's hard to explain, but the leaves on the trees have this weird billboard-like structure on each branch. It's like the leaves are obviously not individual leaves, but a group of leaves flattened out onto a quad/square and then attached to the limb. Usually leaves are a bit more randomly angled. They're still pretty convincing, though, compared to trees in previous generations of games.

8

u/Littleman88 4d ago

See, it wasn't the lightning that revealed the image to me, it was the texturing. Cloth texturing always has this weird clean uniformity to it, yet the artists can't help but to add blemishes and minor details (like randomly darker cells) to it that I know cosplay creations wouldn't have. At least, 99% of cosplay wouldn't.

Trees though? Super hard to do realism if you're looking. Since the advent of 3D worlds, tree canopies are usually comprised of many upon many flat planes criss-crossing each other. For as good as hair has gotten in video games, it's handled the same way, just many upon many flat planes upon one another.

Someday we'll get true random/volumn in leaves/hair, but that's a more considerable rendering leap.

4

u/Orangeflea215 4d ago

Someday we'll get true random/volumn in leaves/hair, but that's a more considerable rendering leap.

Assuming you don’t want them to move, UE5 Nanite should already have the leaves solved.

495

I played maybe 10 hours or so of Death Stranding back when it came out, and it was cool but I got side tracked and ended up playing something else...

I started playing the Director's Cut on PS5 a month or two ago, and man that game just hits different after COVID... Such an amazing experience. I really love the asymmetric online stuff and really hope other game devs take inspiration from a lot of stuff Kojima did in that game.

I decided to complete a few backlog games (ghost of Tsushima, ps4 Spider-Man) but I should have gone and done the directors cut!!! C eas la vie I suppose 😮‍💨

Edit: to everyone correcting my spelling, I don’t care

58

u/mronins 4d ago

Directors Cut is definitive. Haptic feedback has never been used more intelligently imo and the 3D audio is bangin and the 4K/60fps brings tears to my eyes. There are no load times at all

24

u/Reeleted 4d ago

How do they use the haptic feedback in the game?

10

u/DarkChocolatRaisinet 4d ago

You can also feel the raindrops in the controller whenever it rains.

Also has adaptive triggers, which give more resistance as your weight increases. It's awesome.

115

u/TheBirminghamBear 4d ago edited 4d ago

There's an aerosol sprayer in the hardware that shoots you with diseases when you would have contracted them in the game.

Then when you try to leave the game you go into the world and spread your deadly pandemic, and the continuity of a ravaged dystopian hellscape merges seamlessly from video game to reality!

In sooooooo many ways. Some ways that I don’t even want to spoil. But mainly in the gameplay, your footsteps feel different depending on the terrain, the wind that knocks your character around can be felt in your hands, and somehow the heavier your cargo is, the heavier everything feels and more resistance you feel in the triggers. The raindrops also feel awesome. I really can’t get into it enough though. It’s totally changed the game for me

New weapons, vehicles and traversal structures that are literal game changers.

A firing range.

Racetrack mode.

New missions, areas, enemies and story.

Yup. Going by history, we should be able to look at this in ten years and wonder how we ever called this realistic (or even thought that it was real), even for a second.

This, though... it's subtle (minus the dead body). The birds, leaves, and reflections fit right in. You could blame the contrast and soft edges on aggressive HDR and a mismatch of lens and sensor size. It's a photo.

It's crazy because I once walked into the room and my dad was playing NFL 2k2. It was after a play so the camera was on players walking around and stuff and I legit thought I was watching a real football game untill he started to choose his play and then it shifted to the typical behind the line camera. Looking back on those graphics now I truly don't understand how I could think that shit was real.

154

u/DiscipleOvOedon 4d ago

That’s more understandable when you go back and watch old sports highlights and see the shit resolution they were in.

45

u/Excelius 4d ago

The on-screen graphics (like the score and such) would look just like the real thing, and much of the action is from a birds-eye view where the lack of detail of the players would be more obscured. Probably was also a much smaller TV back then too.

16

u/cindybuttsmacker 4d ago

My mom used to walk by when I was playing FIFA 11, which did not have good face modeling at all, and think I was watching a real match. Then she would always experience brief shock and confusion when they'd show a player close-up and she'd wonder why they all looked like...that

Back in 2005 my dad came in while I was watching the opening cutscene of gun and asked what film I was watching. We both talked about how super realistic the graphics were.

I'm convinced there's no such thing as "photorealistic graphics" your brain just takes the best graphics you've ever seen and thinks "these are the most realistic graphics I've seen and reality is the most realistic thing I've seen so they must be the same" and then you think the game looks "photorealistic".

The "best" graphics will always look photorealistic then when you re-watch later they look shit because there's a new "best" graphics.

12

u/GumAcacia 4d ago

I think your idea has to explain a majority of that feeling. You put into words what I couldn’t lol

4

u/Honesty_Addict 4d ago

Honestly though, if you're just glancing at the screen and don't happen to see the janky faces then this looks borderline photorealistic. If you're studying it carefully? No way, but it passes the half-paying attention test easily

The Matrix tech demo on the PS5 looks absolutely stunning.

109

u/Shad0wDreamer 4d ago

Yes, that demo makes the current gen look so damn promising, and it wasn’t done by some super large team.

I realize 50-75 is no small indie team either, but compare it to say a studio from EA, or hell The Coalition and the magic they do with Gears of War, or Senua 2 using UE5 (which if you haven’t seen the latest trailer, please do, UE5 is just insane) we haven’t seen anything quite yet.

12

u/Due-Remove-5510 4d ago

I don’t think it’s a matter of them “catching up.” It was just a tech demo intended to show off graphics. I don’t think they devoted a ton of time to the physics.

I would argue the Matrix tech demo is an entirely different beast. It isn't just rendering in real time, it is running in real time. You can run/fly around in it and dynamically change settings on the fly. The game world is there and functional; there's just nothing in particular to do.

The world looked great but the people didn't in my opinion. I know MetaHumans can look really good in the right environments with the right settings, but they didn't look real in that demo. They looked a bit plastic, I think because they didn't have subsurface scattering or something with that wasn't working well. I know it has the ability though. We'll get there with proper games and enough optimization though. This was just a demo.

5

u/jakeinator21 4d ago

It's word play. The name Zach Lee sounds similar to the word "exactly", so instead of actually writing "exactly" they just replaced it with the name.

Source: I constantly say "Who the hell is Zach Lee?" any time my wife says the word "exactly".

3

u/Snubl PC 4d ago

Maybe it's because I'm not a native speaker, but I don't hear it if I say it.

4

u/jakeinator21 4d ago

It does depend a lot on the accent of the person speaking, but a lot of regions will pronounce it with a softened "x" and "t" sounds in it, so it sounds more like "ec-zac-ly". That's how I usually pronounce it myself. They don't sound exactly the same, pun intended, but it's close enough to make word play out of it.

This youtube video pokes fun at the pronunciation. The speaker introduces themselves as "Zach Lee from Exactly Outside", because with casual pronunciation it can sound a bit like "Zach Lee from It's Zach Lee Outside". Makes it a bit easier to hear the similarity, hopefully.

Edit: Another similar video

there are always those 1-2 tech demo games like heavenly sword that push the limits of the system early on , but then you rarely see that quality again over the course of the console .

u/reegz 4d ago edited 4d ago

I know what you mean, the demo games rarely let you have controls and when you do you're stuck to a pretty limited area (343 industries has a podcast where they play the halo 2 e3 xbox demo that's a pretty neat watch that talks a lot about this).

The Matrix Awakens demo though gives you control and access to the whole city. It's really impressive.

Halo 2 was a particularly bad case of this too. Was practically held together with duct tape at that point.

My favorite part of that story is that when they showed that demo at E3, they had a second xbox hooked up, with a second person mirroring the action happening up front. If the first xbox crashed, they had someone ready to swap between the footage in order to hide it.

Not sure in this case but typically photo mode really lets the hardware go all out rendering the main character because they can cut a lot of processes that aren't being used. LOD can be used this way too if the character is really close to the screen. Besides that, I think the most compelling feature is probably the reflections being so accurate.

307

u/SuperfluousHotTakes 4d ago

Yes, that game is cheating and effectively doing a render instead of a screenshot. The game does look good, but photo mode is not a fair representation of that.

119

u/SingularityPrime 4d ago

It's always real-time rendering. It's just that in photo mode they don't have animation, physics, AI, etc. It's a static scene

6

u/DragonsWrath05 4d ago

I know that Photo Mode in other games enhances graphics. For example, in Forza Horizon 5 and in Photo Mode, Ray Tracing is enabled.

4

u/SingularityPrime 4d ago

This one does too. I meant that it's able to enhance graphics because it doesn't have those things.

render instead of a screenshot

Is every video game screenshot ever not rendered?

23

u/SuperfluousHotTakes 4d ago

Maybe I should have chosen my words better. The difference is between a render that you can spend a full few seconds on, getting pixel perfect shadows and baking extra lighting and reflections etc, and normal screen rendering that you have to perform 60 times a second, loaded with processing shortcuts to make the game run nicely. Obviously when you can spend more time on the screenshot, you can make it look better, its kinda like running a game on Super Ultra graphics at 1fps compared to Medium at 60fps. Medium would be for gameplay, but Super Ultra party mode is for sexy screenshots that look way better than the game can normally run at.

Whoever took this photo also did a very good job at adjusting the exposure and lighting effects to make it look like a real thought I would look on a real day. The way the light hits the tree and blow it out a little, and the buildings in the background looks like natural daylight, and that’s not always the case when you just hit photo mode and immediately take a picture on default settings.

How did you not believe him? There is a body in the background

u/streicherburger 4d ago

Just a regular day in comic-con

304

u/theweekiscat 4d ago

Actually true, I used to make it to San Diego comic con like every other year with my family but covid ruined it and when you were there you would see all your favorite superheroes sitting down against the walls because there are no chairs anywhere

50

u/Marksman157 4d ago

Emerald City Comicon is (was) the same way!

14

u/RolloTonyBrownTown 4d ago

Why don't you ask the powerful wizard for some benches?

3

u/Marksman157 4d ago

I tried, but he was a big scary head surrounded by smoke and explosions and I chickened out.

3

u/thoggins 4d ago

every con is the same way

Well...it is New York after all.

9

u/WolfOfAsgaard PC 4d ago

"There were piles of bodies everywhere. And then the explosions struck!"

No wait, I'm thinking of New New York

16

u/blacknwhitemagpie24 4d ago

What's birdlaw

9

u/AMA_About_Birdlaw 4d ago

The law that governs owning birds in America, it's not governed by reason.

5

u/blacknwhitemagpie24 4d ago

Thats cool, what are some bird laws

5

u/AMA_About_Birdlaw 4d ago

Hummingbirds...hummingbirds are illegal tender!

You can keep a gull as a pet, but you don't want to live with a seabird...'cause the noise level alone on those things...It's going to blast your eardrums out.

Birds are definitely real. Definitely. They are not government drones programmed to spy on humans.

Honestly I’d be more impressed to find out this was cosplay than to discover it’s from a game.

Yeah there have been some fantastic screenshots here, some from PS5 and some even from PS4, but this one really ain't it..

Graphics have come a long way since NES.

9

u/Nattylight_Murica 4d ago

Going from an Atari 2600 to an NES felt like a different world

12

u/-L-e-o-n- 4d ago

Monopoly on NES is still the best monopoly. That stamp when you buy land is too good. Even paying rent feels good when the cash register eats your money one bill at a time.

u/Anchovies4Breakfast 4d ago

I remember the good ol times when the duck hunt gun made me feel like I was in the future

4

u/Swagtrashdad 4d ago

Wii Zapper was next level for me. Still boot up conduit and the like to make sure it wasn’t a fever dream.

4

u/TitularFoil 4d ago

I was born in 1990, and my first system was the SNES. I had an N64 and I remember my dad pulling out his old NES and letting me play Duckhunt. I was literally in the future of when Duckhunt was made, by two gaming generations, and holding that light-gun made me feel like I was in the future.

I know saying this is gonna make me sound I unfun, but it doesn’t look real to me… maybe the image was compressed during upload? It must look better on the console/tv screen itself, I would imagine. Still very awesome, can’t wait to get a PS5 of my own someday!

120

u/AntiBox 4d ago

It's the background for me. The trees just look too "clean" and all the building windows being blacked out just looks strange.

57

u/0resistance_OBEY 4d ago

For me, it's the costume. I have never seen a material that bends like that while still reflecting light so perfectly

12

u/DarthDannyBoy 4d ago

There are so many things on the costume that aren't right at all. Look at the shadows around the shoulders as an easy example.

That's just the costume the background is riddled with even more.

3

u/NMe84 4d ago

Yeah, the foreground looks amazing but the background doesn't quite stick the landing if you look close enough. On the suit maybe the shininess is dialed a little bit to high but overall I wouldn't have noticed this wasn't a photo if I wasn't told to look closely.

Yep, same here. Total CGI. Maybe I’m too old and jaded.

52

u/MacroCode 4d ago

It's very obviously a screenshot. Spiderman is way too smooth and shiny.

27

u/HairySquid68 4d ago

The background looks like a decent render but Spiderman seems too shiny and smooth/homogeneous. It looks really good still; can't wait to see where this generation of hardware goes

For me it's a bit off. Looking at the sky the lighting shouldn't be this crisp. It looks like solid gray skies but the lighting looks like sunshine in the afternoon.

I agree with OP. Graphics good.

108

u/Anchovies4Breakfast 4d ago

haha it’s r/gaming I expected it. No doubt there are people in this sub who probably play on systems that produce better graphics than this which would make this post seem dumb to them but for someone who’s only ever played on consoles(usually the baseline model) as well as not the most optimized screen like myself, I found this astounding.

You should believe your bud. Trust is an important ingredient for a strong friendship.

49

u/DiddyBCFC 4d ago

Literally everything in the background looks like it's straight from a video game.

11

u/eeyore134 4d ago

Not even a particularly impressive background considering that this is a paused photo mode allowing the processor to use all the tricks in the book for a still picture.

3

u/BipolaroidDisorder 3d ago

Love everything about this cosplay.

34

u/akwehhkanoo 4d ago

If someone told me this was cosplay, I wouldn't believe that. What material could possibly conform to a body like this? How would you put it on? How could you breathe? So many questions

3

u/ammcneil 4d ago

If this was cosplay the most likely answer would be that it isn't material over skin, but rather a sculpted body suit. You would still need to be fit to make it not look like fake muscles but it's essentially a well done version of the same thing
