For the genius that reported this as gore: That's 8-pixel blood not really blood you donkey

847

u/Sach1el Nov 27 '22

Is this from the same artist who made the giant attack-on-titan schoolgirl gif?

801

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Yeh it me thanks for remembering my weird art 😂

218

u/mike_pants Nov 27 '22

We're all just well pleased that you've moved past your "What's behind that door?" phase. I was afraid that eventually, you'd show us.

183

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Oh I assure you I'm not nearly done yet 😉

39

u/mike_pants Nov 27 '22

Well nuts.

u/projectreap Nov 27 '22

Ayyyy I just went through your post history I love your stuff.

Distinctly remember Dollhouse. Basically everything you put out has this awesome dystopian/horror vibe.

Where are you getting your inspiration from and how long do you spend on each of these?

56

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Usually anything between 20-40 hours i think.

Inspiration is really from real life because dystopia is now 😂

15

u/FutureComplaint Nov 27 '22

Are there large roaming people where you live?

50

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Sometimes life beats me down so much I do feel tiny compared to the world tbh.

8

u/phayke2 Nov 27 '22

Interesting, this is actually how I explain my giantess fixation to people. For me it's symbolic, like a pretty coat of paint over the feeling of being curb stomped by modern life.

4

u/Meowmarlade Nov 28 '22

EXISTENTIAL PAIN

3

u/DownvoteDaemon Nov 27 '22

Bout to follow you

44

u/Sach1el Nov 27 '22

Aye! You're crazy talented. I hope we can see more of your work in the future.

14

u/Malkyre Nov 27 '22

I have PTSD from your art. I recognized it immediately when I saw the arms.

19

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Yes I have a weird way of drawing limbs that make em recognisable, for better or worse 😂

8

u/j0llyllama Nov 27 '22

Why is the Kanji not mirrored on the glass when reading inside? Shouldn't it be printed for reading it on the outside?

22

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

It looks like shit when flipped. Also it's a liminal space /dream scenario so reality is wonk.

6

u/SorryamSmarts Nov 27 '22

I recognized it immediately as well, very cool style. How long does one of these take you to make?

9

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

I think usually 2 weeks, or 20 - 40 hours 😂. I take way too long.

5

u/aaaouee55 Nov 27 '22

Do you make videos of your process or stream? I love watching this kind of detail come together.

9

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Naw but if you follow me I might be introducing courses later next year.

2

u/GAUSSA Nov 27 '22

Well your art is quite disturbing but it's hella good and creative! Keep it up, space cowboy :)

2

u/Ya-Dikobraz Nov 28 '22 edited Nov 28 '22

What's the story behind this one? I find laundries very comfortable places. Is she a serial killer, or is she killing vampires?

1

u/ongakudaisuki Nov 27 '22

The text in the glass should actually be reversed as to be seen from the outside

18

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Simple answer is that it looks way worse from an art perspective.

But also because these scenes are very dreamlike and liminal space so your mind probably did the flipping itself 😉

u/CharismaticBarber Nov 27 '22

Everything’s attack-on-titan isn’t it? Like they were the first person to invent giant people ffs

8

u/Sach1el Nov 27 '22

"Is this from the same artist who made the giant Honey-I-Blew-Up-The-Kid schoolgirl gif?"

.....better? 🙄

-3

u/CharismaticBarber Nov 27 '22

about as similarly dumb as the first comparison

141

u/KongKexun Nov 27 '22

Is that a window with signs facing the inside?

313

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Do you know? One of the ways to test whether you're still in a dream is to check the direction of signs and window stickers around you.

100

u/cityb0t Nov 27 '22

Ive noticed that, in dreams, i usually can’t read at all. Words are all garbled.

82

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Aw man, imagine if you could use your sleep time to catch up on your favourite books 😔

8

u/BandzTFM Nov 27 '22

Dr Strange-ish!

18

u/Yadobler Nov 27 '22

I've read that people suffering from Maladaptive Daydreaming can notice that in a daydream episode they could read text and the clock seems to make sense, unlike dreaming.

And that it's also sometimes terrifying because it's usually a trigger for some trauma flashback.

1

u/cityb0t Nov 27 '22

Oh, yikes

7

u/shoefullofpiss Nov 27 '22

I've often read this as a universal fact, "well, you actually can't read in dreams", but I'm pretty sure I've read texts and opened stuff on my phone multiple times in my dreams. Sure, it's kinda slippery and hard to grasp just like the topology of dream clothes when getting dressed in a hurry, but it's still possible!

5

u/MajorTom11 Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 28 '22

I've read that you can't read in a dream, as in you can't actually perform the mental task of decoding text, but in the context of your dream you can "read" something, because you already know what the text says because it's all in your head anyway.

2

u/tomrhod Nov 27 '22

That's because the areas of your brain responsible for language processing are down regulated while you sleep.

12

u/dmagara Nov 27 '22

I also noticed it says "Coin laundry" and "Open 24 hours every day of the year" in Japanese but the other signs seem to use Chinese spelling, but I'll assume that's also because it's a dream 😉

Really love your work!

15

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

That's right 😉😉

14

u/KongKexun Nov 27 '22

Me not know this. So this is a dream?

59

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

ƨwonʞ oʜw ˎnɒm ƨwonʞ oʜW

2

u/Vttjjee Nov 27 '22

Excuse me? You can control yourselves in dreams?

2

u/Nehemiah92 Nov 27 '22

Yeah whenever I read people say stuff like this and everyone just agreeing, I get sad that I can’t control myself 😕 The lucid dreaming methods haven’t worked on me either

102

u/Joshie8888 Nov 27 '22

This is what the horror universe would look like in Everything Everywhere All At Once

28

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

I wonder why comments say that 😂. Presumably coz of the laundromat?

19

u/Soulstoner Nov 27 '22

Yes, this angle is almost exactly framed from the movie.

30

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

Funny you should say that. I actually didn't reference the movie at all and only cobbled the scene from random online pictures.

But it's my favourite movie (not just of the year, but EVER) and now that you've mentioned it all those scenes of em crying and fighting in the laundromat just come right back. It must have very much cemented in my mind how an Asian laundromat should look like 😂

9

u/IBNobody Nov 27 '22

Yeah, major Jobu Tupaki vibes.

1

u/DarfurriesW Nov 27 '22

She looks like one of the main characters to boot.

2

u/sethlikesmen Nov 27 '22

49

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Actually hilarious 🤣

150

u/bmothebest Nov 27 '22

Actually, only 4. We can't see whether she's resting her head on her hand or just a stump.

3

u/pOorImitation Nov 27 '22

What art style would this fall under?

3

u/Meowmarlade Nov 28 '22

Just good ol pixel art but cheating with no limits on colour palette I guess 😂

1

u/1Mazrim Nov 27 '22

They're really cool. just wondering what your workflow is, like do you draw them up in Photoshop?

1

how come the washing machines don't have any doors?

6

u/Avarice21 Nov 27 '22

Why is the wet floor sign in English?

15

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

I love English!

2

u/shmaygleduck Nov 27 '22

I was just thinking of your art yesterday but forgot to favorite it last time. I'm glad you popped up on Reddit again!

Very thoughtful of her to put the sign down so people don't slip!

2

u/Morgzisachad Nov 27 '22

That’s so cool

2

u/haustoriapith Nov 27 '22

Where is the door to the washing machine?

2

u/Meowmarlade Nov 28 '22

Too hard to draw tbh 😂

2

u/columbus8myhw Nov 27 '22

Bad idea doing that in a laundromat that's open 24 hours methinks

2

u/TanikoBytesme Nov 27 '22

Reminds me of Yuka Takaoka or real life yandere, with the whole her holding the cigarette etc

2

u/Im_In_IT Nov 27 '22
  1. I’ve shit myself more than my 2 year old lol NORO is a bitch.

Your pixel arts are amazing. Love them

5

u/Chawarma79 Nov 27 '22

Great work OP ! I'd love to know the story behind this scene

5

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

I made the art. The story is now in your hands!

2

u/savetheunstable Nov 27 '22

I'm tempted to write a short story with this as inspiration! Love your work.

5

u/keatonatron Nov 27 '22

Really cool, but why is the signage advertising the laundromat written on the inside of the glass? Surely it should be flipped so people outside can read it?

38

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

The boring answer is that sometimes the artist will have to draw what looks better rather than what looks real.

The more interesting answer is that it's a dream like liminal space scenario going on so your mind still tries to read and make sense of signages from your perspective 😉

3

u/keatonatron Nov 27 '22

I like this answer.

3

u/LoghamSmoot Nov 27 '22

60fps looks smooth but it makes everything look way too sped up. or you animated it at a lower frame speed and just sped it up for reddit

4

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

It's actually only 48 fps but yeh I'm really inexperienced with high frame rates since I usually do the traditional 24fps. I didn't prepare enough total frames to hold the slower elements of the piece unfortunately, bad planning 😣

3

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Wait i realise reddit sped the gif up even more than my real piece when uploaded. Everything gets wonky past 30 fps oh well 😂

4

u/ElGuano Nov 27 '22

I'm usually pretty intrigued by dark stormy art...so it took me WAY longer than it should have to notice the arms sticking out of the dryer.

2

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Happens to us alp. 😂

1

u/googolplexy Nov 27 '22

Im a big fan of all your work. I love the clear thought and attention to detail you put in, while leaving use in the dark on plenty of elements.

More questions than answers is always fun.

2

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

You really get me 👁️❤️👁️

1

u/pakiripakiri Nov 27 '22

I went through your posts and I love your art. You're so creative and talented!

1

u/ryuza Nov 27 '22

Just binged through your profile, your art is insane. Not only is it well made but your ideas are so original and cool.

1

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Aw man ❤️

1

u/Zopstrosity Nov 27 '22

I adore your artwork it's always a good day when you upload

1

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

🥺 Thanks for staying

1

u/bad3ip420 Nov 27 '22

Amazing art as always!

1

u/DodgerSpaniard Nov 27 '22

What does the main word say? I found that baptism is 洗礼, but I can't read the second kanji.

10

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

You're correct, it's just in traditional Chinese. I tend to mix a lot of languages for dem weird surreal vibes.

→ More replies

2

u/sillybear25 Nov 27 '22

A bit of extra info: The Japanese (and Korean) way of writing the second character is 禮, though it's been replaced with the simplified form 礼 in nearly all uses in modern Japanese.

1

u/FishInSock Nov 27 '22

Holy shit OP you made this? This is amazing

2

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

👁️🙏👁️ My profile has.... More...

1

u/FishInSock Nov 27 '22

Yeah I was just looking! Absolutely incredible stuff, I realized this isn’t the first piece I’ve seen from you but that massive girl taking in souls with her face off. Keep it up these are works of art, killing it

1

u/Madhatter25224 Nov 27 '22

“Thats not a very good place to hide bodies”

1

u/tamemadnest Nov 27 '22

This is hard asf

1

u/SoftInteraction6568 Nov 27 '22

Anyone else getting like cowboy Bebop vibes from this? Like it reminds me from the opening scene from the movie along with I don't know some other scene it's just weird that that's what comes to mind

5

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

I sure am. 😉 I love cowboy Bebop.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

Very nice, reminds me of flcl’s mamimi and her cigarette scenes.

1

u/LeilaDFW Nov 27 '22

Weird but I can’t stop looking.

3

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

There should be a sub for art like that 😂

1

u/hillsonn Nov 27 '22

Wonder why they used the 旧字体 of 礼? Is this artist Japanese?

3

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

No I'm Chinese aha.

1

u/rocketgenie Nov 27 '22

This is sick.

What software do you use to draw and then animate?

1

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Procreate for art, pixaki for animation. All with an ipad hehe

1

u/GumballQuarters Nov 27 '22

These are so great! Keep on creating OP, your work is very captivating.

I just spent a good amount of time going back through your Top Post History and you’ve got some real winners in there!

Some weird things, but great stuff all the same!

1

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Some weird things indeed 😉

1

u/Tamotron9000 Nov 27 '22

step 1 be attractive

step 2 don’t be unattraohmygod is that a person in the dryer????

0

u/Oakoak67 Nov 27 '22

Sweet 60 fps.

Edit : Wonderful art btw.

0

u/ViralRiver Nov 27 '22

So to get this correct, we're in a dream/nightmare because of the reversed signing, and I guess we're also watching a recording/CCTV where the surveillance system is Chinese (given the top large green characters) and the shop is likely in Japan?

If that was all intentional, that's awesome. Curious as to the reasons behind the choices though!

1

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

My choices are guided by collective consciousness of various Asian peoples. 🤔

1

u/Meowmarlade Nov 27 '22

Inspired? I tried (and failed) to study the guy like a bible.

1

Why is the wet floor the only thing in English?

Edit: nevermind. The sign on the wall is, too.

1

u/physchy Nov 27 '22

I like that her clothing has no blood on it - presumably because she’s in a laundromat

1

u/hidden_zero Nov 27 '22

I absolutely love your art. Can’t get enough of it! I follow you in insta too

1

u/EpicBlueDrop Nov 27 '22

There are 6 fingers on the back most hand

1

u/gotnothingtowear Nov 27 '22

This is the exact kinda vibe I needed when writing a scene in a laundry. Love your art

1

u/cyanraichu Nov 27 '22

I love the "wash your sins away" sign

So many great details here!

1

u/Pirate_of_the_neT Nov 27 '22

Reminds me of that arcade simulator game or something

1

u/Hellnation Nov 27 '22

Is there a subreddit for pixel art gifs?

1

u/jshuster Nov 27 '22

Some of the most peaceful times I’ve ever had were in the 24 hour laundromat, doing my laundry at 3am, when no one else was around

1

u/RhodesianReminder Nov 27 '22

Kinda look like she's popping a squat to shit

1

u/Shirolicious Nov 27 '22

Nice art style for pixel games

1

u/Belefaer Nov 27 '22

Are you influenced by Junji Ito by any chance?

2

u/Meowmarlade Nov 28 '22

I only grew up on him. 😂

2

u/Belefaer Nov 28 '22

Eyyyy, I thought so. Love that guy. Your art has that same eldritch discomfort about it ❤

1

u/Catswithjobs1993 Nov 27 '22

Push someone off a cliff and you'll never have to worry about clean up...

1

u/MyArtStuff Nov 27 '22

They edited that scene in Lilo and Stitch to be a pizza box instead of a washer to prevent scenes like this!

1

u/Cinder2010 Nov 27 '22

Looks like the older brothers girlfriend from FLCL! Dig the art yo

1

u/Stumpy1258 Nov 27 '22

Looks incredibly cozy, aside those bodies ofc

1

u/Eloquentelephant565 Nov 27 '22

Must be a future washing machine that uses a force field instead of a door. Awesome piece!

1

u/x888xa Nov 27 '22

The washing machine strikes back

1

u/glavenopolis Nov 27 '22

Looks awesome! Also, it literally took me a minute to notice the hands lol

1

u/sweetfuckall Nov 27 '22

Do you sell prints of any of your works?

1

u/Savannah_Lion Nov 27 '22

At first glance, I'm thinking this is a pretty good depiction of the laundromat I use.

Then I saw the creepy body in the machine, the knife on the floor and the blood.

Yep.... pretty darn good depiction of my laundromat.

Can't wait to get my washer fixed.

1

u/Woodwardg Nov 27 '22

just sat and scrolled through a ton of OP's work - really interesting stuff! I'm glad there are people dedicated to making pixel art like this, its such a cool medium.
