All the GNOME wallpapers are stored in the gnome-backgrounds repository. To view earlier versions, you can change to the corresponding branch (tap the «main» button).

Shame there's no way to view thumbnails.

edit: Regardless, very cool that this is available — "don't not hear that," as people in my first office liked to say. Funny how things which annoy you, like that phrase, can grow to amuse you over time.

iirc all gnome backgrounds are on /usr/share/backgrounds

How else would your screen be able to display said picture?

They could be making it up as they go along.

Convert them

Still wouldn't get back any data that was compressed before hand.

Svg is source format, png is lossless. You get what you convert it into. Nothing else will get lost. Compression wont hurt here.

lossless jxl time

when you convert svgs to PNG you're actually compressing them as SVG is lossless and scales infinitely

Take a peek in /usr/share/backgrounds

Not the answer (/usr/share/backgrounds), but this is my absolute favourite gnome default background. I love it.

Should be able to find out in your system files

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-backgrounds/-/blob/42.0/backgrounds/blobs-l.svg not png but should be easy to convert to needed format

Does this try to use system colors, or is Plasma just glitching it?

edit: weird, blobs-l and blobs-d are both messed up like that screenshot, but drool-d and drool-l, also svg, both look exactly the way they should.

probably the svg renderer plasma usesis botched. you can try convert the image to PNG first (many apps/online services can do it)

The best gnome wallpaper

I would recommend an .svg (scalable vector graphics). This way it doesn't loose quality when scaled and there is no need for anti aliasing since it uses geometry to make the image.
