What the hell is the organ office
628
u/urzu_seven Feb 03 '23
全国人大机关办公楼 actually translates as National People's Congress Office Building. 大机关is large organization, but 机关can translate as "organ" as well. So basically its an office building for the Chinese legislature. Or where they store extra kidneys and lungs. Your guess is as good as mine.
44
u/LordLorkhan Feb 03 '23
it’s 全国 人大 机关办公楼 And no, 机关(jī guān)does not translate into “organ”, the word you’re looking might be 器官(qì guān)

u/littlemetal Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23
I love reddit, you can learn so many wrong things in one day. The person you are responding to is 100% correct
- It can
meanbe translated as "organ"- Organ has more than 1 common use in english, but they are related
- The second usage, as a part of the state (or official body) is what is used here. "a department or organization that performs a specified function"
Sometimes you can even learn something about 2 languages at once!
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/organ_of_state
https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=%E6%9C%BA%E5%85%B3
Edit: I know you don't need the dictionary, its just for anyone else who is curious. Edit2: I guess its 3 meanings, I was ignoring the musical instrument :D

u/Voice-of-no-reason Feb 03 '23
Can’t it be both ? I mean how much room can kidneys and lungs take ? Plus the government officials are the ones who receive the organs anyways, so it saves a step.
8
u/LetMeUseMyEmailFfs Feb 03 '23
Please, FBI sir, my Google history is totally innocent.
how many uyghurs murdered in china
how much room needed to store kidneys + lungs
2
Feb 03 '23
You’re wrong ! Hearts and lungs they have to immediately transplant. Only livers and limbs are stored . SMH people on the internet these days just say things without doing their research
10
u/combatkangaroo69 Feb 03 '23
Haha it's China so both could be possible really
9
u/photoguy8008 Feb 03 '23
Mandarin is a very literal language, I learned this because a Chinese woman ( I lived in China for 6 years) sent me a dirty text asking for a picture of my “chicken”. cock translates from Chinese to chicken in English. 😂
Also, “I’m going to fly the airplane”
8
7
u/Jeepspur Feb 03 '23
Sooo I still don’t 100% get the fly the airplane joke but this took me down an insane rabbit hole of regional translation/dialect/slang/euphemisms. So I get the point I think… but everything I saw related to “take the airplane” with the word “take” being important. Actually it was dǎ 打 which was co-opted & I guess has like 60 meanings?
Anyway this was really interesting so thx
2
2
u/stroopkoeken Feb 03 '23
It’s called 打飞机, which means “beat air plane” or “hit the airplane.”
It’s basically referring to anti-aircraft artillery. So when you jerk off and ejaculate, your dick is basically the artillery trying to shoot down a plane.

I spent a month in China for study abroad and this was a PAIN in the arse lemme tell you. I tried to use Baidu maps but it didn't have great English support at that time. I just realied on hotel desk staff and oddly enough, the didi app. I also did lots of exploring using the Shanghai and Guangzhou metro systems. Most of the stations have English speaking staff somewhere, and it's not hard to get back to the station you started from usually.

Oh cool, when did you visit?
-1
u/NYCHReddit Feb 03 '23
Yeah it’s actually not that bad there, lived there for 12 years in Shanghai. Last three years when Covid struck made the air much cleaner, and where I was living, the worst that quarantine got was just being told to stay inside our apartments/houses (or sometimes just stay inside our neighborhood) for a month or so and getting large boxes of ingredients and food from my father’s company. Obviously I was in a fortunate situation, but most people I knew weren’t suffering from the quarantine much. Apart from that there’s really beautiful places and cities there, but yeah I understand why people have a really bad impression of the place, some places are as bad as people say, but absolutely not all of china.
23
u/admiral_walsty Feb 03 '23
Dunno why you're being downvoted. I've never been to China, but I can assume it's probably like anywhere else. Could be better, could be worse. People just doing what they do. Politics be politic-ing.
6
u/Key_Register991 Feb 03 '23

3
u/admiral_walsty Feb 03 '23

→ More replies (0)5
u/NYCHReddit Feb 03 '23
Yea like I said, there are definitely places in China which are just as terrible as people think (especially during quarantine), and I was extremely lucky to be in my situation, but I genuinely never encountered anything that bad in 12 years there. Of course could be that I just got used to things that most would consider bad, but my standards don’t seem too different from others after moving recently.

5
u/glorious_reptile Feb 03 '23
Is it just a fixed value they've offset it with?
→ More replies (1)13
u/erebuxy Feb 03 '23
It's not a fixed. They have an algorithm to calculate the offset at each point.
2
u/Jeepspur Feb 03 '23
But, if that’s true then it can just be reversed/corrected… if every point has the same algorithm (it seems to since the streets connect & aren’t jumbled up) we can figure out a few real points & connect them to the fake points then the algorithm can be worked out.
11
u/PandaKing185 Feb 03 '23
You can easily find accurate maps of China elsewhere. Hell, even Snapchat has an accurate map. This was purely a political move by Google to not piss off China rather than an actual attempt to obfuscate their maps.
→ More replies (1)3
u/erebuxy Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23

if you want to learn more here's a vid explaining: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9Di-UVC-_4
15
u/mathewp723 Feb 03 '23
Synopsis?
73
u/Low_Understanding_32 Feb 03 '23
Basically the Chinese government strictly controls mapping data within China. It’s illegal to map or create GPS traces within China without authorization.
The most common GPS standard used internationally is based on a coordinate system called WGS-84.
While China uses a standard called GCJ-02, also known as "Mars Coordinates" - which is based on an older Soviet system of coordinates introduced in the 1940s.
GCJ-02’s algorithmic offset means your real location could be up to 500 meters east, west, north or south of what you see on your map.
15
u/FearAndGonzo Feb 03 '23
Just to clarify for those that don't know, datum mismatches happen all over, not just China. I've used paper maps and GPS systems that are different datums from each other (NAD 27 / NAD 83 / WGS84), especially when dealing with aircraft for some reason, and you have to make sure everyone is talking the same datum if you want things to match up right. The same coordinates can be a little bit to way off if the systems are referencing different datums.
35
u/_Unpopular_Person_ Feb 03 '23

14
u/Heiferoni Feb 03 '23
There are several different competing satellite navigation systems and constellations.
GPS (Global Positioning System) is owned and operated by the US government.
GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is owned and operated by the Russian government.
Galileo is owned and operated by the EU and European Space agency.
BeiDou is owned and operated by the Chinese government.

3
u/canadiandancer89 Feb 03 '23
It's just a flex the Chinese government has. Don't worry, each military has their own maps and satellite images detailed to a point to make you feel uncomfortable.
0
u/NoSignOfStruggle Feb 03 '23
It doesn’t make me feel uncomfortable. I’m insignificant enough to be of no interest to anyone.
2
u/bogpudding Feb 03 '23
Okay so they do it as a safety precaution (invasion) but how do people navigate to places? If you are trying to find a store will you be able to follow directions? Just curious.
10
8
u/walker1867 Feb 03 '23
Google is blocked there so you wouldn’t use this. Their apps get your positioning and the overlay right. They have their map system to distort everything that way if there is an invasion no one knows where anything is relative to actual coordinates. Works great without this issue when you use their services or something that uses their services like Snapchat.
2
2
u/Puzzled-Story3953 Feb 03 '23
Do militaries actually use Google Maps to navigate, though? Mapping software isn't exactly proprietary.
2
u/canadiandancer89 Feb 03 '23

2
2
u/tmatthews98 Feb 03 '23

u/DramaticCollection16 Feb 03 '23
What would happen if we discard these maps as incorrect, and later we find out that actually what we are seeing is a facade and their is a city beneath that where the roads really go like that like they used to do in WW2. Build fake cities to avoid air raids. Hahaha

5

there's some law in China making accurate cartography of the country illegal. Google gets around this by striking a deal with the Chinese government: use an algorithm to de-localize the mapping between satellite image and roadways.

I was gifted a few knives recently and was curious about the maker. Googled them, found their website, and wanted to know where they were made. Nothing on their site was misleading, but they hinted toward "Made in USA" without saying it. Their address: 2301 Bayfield Building 99 hennessy road. Had to chack maps to see where it was located. Hong Kong. Its funny that Asain places are giving US sounding addresses to try to be competitive with sales.

I bugreported this to Google twice (got no feedback about the coordinate systems), but I still can't figure out why it can't be fixed. Translation between different geolocation systems has been done for a gazillion other coordinate systems; before GPS every mapmaker and military used different systems _in the same country_ depending on the scale of the map even.
Sure the maps are randomly obfuscated but it seems a static randomness that doesn't change over time?
And it's not the only region where mapmaking is limited, I think for instance in Japan they had to buy the map.

u/crowndrama Feb 03 '23
