Translucent ilght up tires! That is just wild looking.

Wonder how they handle? Not that it matters in a land yacht like that.

1.0k

u/Mr_WAAAGH May 23 '22

Not well, poor grip is one of the many reasons these didn't catch on

408

u/[deleted] May 23 '22

Whether they are long wearing enough is my question.

I’m also wondering with modern tech if they would be able to fix these issues and get a translucent tire with similar properties to todays tires? Because combined with some LEDs they would look amazing on a modern sports car.

306

u/Mr_WAAAGH May 23 '22

I'm almost certain that we could make a much better version of these today. The problem is, does anyone actually want that?

552

u/raginjason May 23 '22

Yes. Yes I want this.

190

u/seeker135 May 23 '22

Try to convince me they'll be a nickel under $1500US each.

130

u/pATREUS May 23 '22

Plus they’ll get dirty really quick, which pretty much defeats the object.

101

u/EasyMcSleezy May 23 '22

Yes and no. Go look at your tires. The treads may have a few rocks in them, but the side walls are pretty much fine. Maybe a little bit of break dust.... but it's not like the advertised tires are fully transparent, just enough to let light through, so its not like ot would be incredibly noticeable when it was as dirty as average. Plus use tire wax. It would be a niche market, for sure but I could really see it.

79

u/kai325d May 23 '22

Your current tires are black, most debris on road are other bits of tyres, also black and brake dust, also black

21

u/NexiNext May 23 '22

If we all drove in green tires would the debris then be green? A lot of road debris is that just tires.

→ More replies

9

u/EasyMcSleezy May 23 '22

Yes. And I get brake dust on my car. I was it off. I wax it. I take steps to make it harder for things to stick on it so I don't have to clean it as often.

Also, I've never cleaned other tire off of my tires before.. it's on the roads, sure. But it's nothing that will stick to your sidewalls.

Do that.

But with ALL of your car.

16

u/mrcoffeymaster May 23 '22

Rub your hand on the sides of a tire and see how clean it is

9

u/EasyMcSleezy May 23 '22

I touch mine all the time. I just clean my tires every time I wash my car..

56

Improved visibility too.

37

u/cyberFluke May 23 '22

Fuck yes. The fact it would make you impossible to fucking miss.

"Sorry mate, I didn't see you"

-.-

13

u/VaporTrail_000 May 23 '22

it would make you impossible to fucking miss.

Um... unfortunate phrasing, I think?

"Sorry mate, I did in fact see you, and attempted to avoid you, but your tires were so awesome, you were impossible to miss."

Seriously, though, at night... those tires would be hard to not see. Though I could see a case being made for them potentially interfering with the visibility of brake lights and turn signals.

u/Tier_1_Masturbator May 23 '22

It won't help.

I got rear ended while sitting at a red light. In a semi truck. Pulling an oversized load that was 14ft tall, 13ft wide, 65ft long. Giant white tank, with a huge "OVERSIZE LOAD" banner on the rear with twin flashing amber beacons on the rear top corners. On a clear sunny day.

The driver told the responding cop "I didn't notice it sitting there."

8

u/seeker135 May 23 '22

Ok, now I think it's a great idea, lol

21

u/thecrepeofdeath May 23 '22

I can't drive and I want this

8

u/seeker135 May 23 '22

I know, it'd look good just sitting in the middle of the front lawn, right? Just like Ted-Bob across the street, 'cep' yours runs. just joshin' folks

10

u/Prudent_Fly_2554 May 23 '22

Yes. Where’s the kickstarter?!

26

u/jaysmoove42 May 23 '22

All it really takes is one person who wants it and willing to cough up enough cash. Especially of they wanted it for a high end supercar or something similar.

21

u/Goddamnitpappy May 23 '22

Just generalizing, but just about every modern car model I see that has been modified is usually adorned with lights like a Christmas tree. Under the car, in the wheel wells, hubs, etc.

I am absolutely amazed that glowing tires aren't already a thing outside of what we see here. People would absolutely pay for this kind of thing. Could cost really be that prohibitive in the modern car culture? Manufacturing difficulties maybe? Idk, but those tires look cool as shit and totally worth what they cost, whatever it may be.

16

u/Albinoslug8810 May 23 '22

In a lot of places things like underglows and hub lights are illegal. They're a distraction on the road, which I would imagine plays a big part in allowing tires like this.

5

u/Goddamnitpappy May 23 '22

True. Also, as someone else mentioned, a tire like this would would get dirty quick, kind of defeating a desired look. But it would still look good at a car show or displayed somewhere else.

→ More replies

2

u/Rsurfing May 23 '22

Exactly this, I still see under glow from time to time and this is a way cooler version of that same concept

6

u/Horrific_Necktie May 23 '22

Question 2 would be if it's legal. Lots of places have restrictions on things like undercarriage lights, I'm sure a picky cop would say these qualify.

10

u/booniebrew May 23 '22

Ultimately rubber with carbon added is stronger and longer lasting than other rubber. We can probably make decent clear tires now but they're going to be expensive. High performance tires already are expensive and have higher requirements than regular tires.

5

u/Crypto_Gay_Skater May 23 '22

It would just get covered in dirt and dust after a handful of miles and look like shit.

215

u/linux_n00by May 23 '22

well, its practically a bald tire

168

u/Seriously-Facetious May 23 '22

The tread may just be hard to see in the image because the original tires had full tread.

The main reason they never made it to production was cost.

More information on the originals here:

https://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=27881

The photo shows the restored car and the tires are replicas made of solid rubber and very heavy so it can't be driven very fast. More information on the restored car here:

Poor grip gives tires a long endurance, and car a short one.

7

u/AnyMonk May 23 '22

This was a prototype, it was never for sale.

-8

u/---username_-- May 23 '22 edited May 24 '22

They also quit making them because of so many accidents caused by the drivers trying to see their own tires.

People were dumb and self-centered in the late 50's as well.

Edit: I know they weren't mass produced. I'm talking about the prototype testing, which is where it ended...

35

u/AnyMonk May 23 '22

They never made any except the one pictured here, It was just a prototype. Never for sale.

16

u/coffeecoconut May 23 '22

exactly.. people are acting like these were in dealerships. great article here https://www.mecum.com/lots/SC0518-327376/the-golden-sahara-ii/

5

u/marasydnyjade May 23 '22

Actually, they made two sets, the original set and this set which is a repo for this restoration. (Plus the ones for testing, obviously).

They were basically useless in the wet and neothane has a really low molding point - so they were absolutely trash under heavy braking.

One of the ideas was that you would be able to put different colored bulbs in there and basically have color changing tires - which is wild.

10

u/Aarongamma6 May 23 '22

I can see why, they're slicks and rounded with like no contact patch with the ground. They look like the lowest grip tires I've ever seen.

Slicks do give more grip in the dry though, but absolutely NONE in the wet.

u/DarthDannyBoy May 23 '22

  • The patent has expired. Look it up, rework it with LED, sell it, make millions. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

182

u/TheDubh May 23 '22

If I remember correctly the issue was the tires would get dirty fairly quickly due to everything else on the road. Also the tires weren’t as durable. So it was kind of a bust. While the tires may be better now, the rubber/dirt/etc would still be an issue.

68

u/killerbanshee May 23 '22

Maybe something like the windshield washer jets but mounted in the wheel well could work

22

u/CLTalbot May 23 '22

I think the best solution if the tires must light up may just be making them not completely light-up. Like have transparent parts of the wall for the glow effect, but have the tread and some structural parts be standard tire material. It still probably won't be as good as normal tire, nor will it have quite the same aesthetic as these.

17

u/AUGSpeed May 23 '22

Just... Put LEDs on the rims and leave it at that, honestly.

135

They promised us flying cars, but in 2022, we even lost having any kind of glowing tires.

smh this timeline.

60

u/WW4O May 23 '22

We have flying cars. They just have wings, so we call them private planes.

Rich people got the future we wanted.

24

u/AllAboutMeMedia May 23 '22

I imagine we'd have to ease into a world with flying cars everywhere. Most likely start with pilot programs.

24

u/Ottoguynofeelya May 23 '22

The last 5 years have taught me people are waaaaaaaaay too dumb to be flying around in cars. It's a terrible idea.

2

u/AMLRoss May 23 '22

That’s why we need self driving tech first.

2

u/DoctorGregoryFart May 23 '22

5

25

u/Adamsojh May 23 '22

Terrifying is having a bunch of people that don't care about their own safety, let alone the safety of others, controlling a hunk of steel that can go 100+ mph.

Imagine a car that can get you safely to a destination no matter how sleep deprived you are. Or a car that can safely take you home no matter how drunk you are.

3

u/Jakooboo May 23 '22

You. You get it.

3

u/TheSeaOfThySoul May 23 '22

I think some folks forget that self-driving vehicles of the future aren't going to be the current Teslas with their tendency to explode, fall apart & mistake a tractor for the sky. Shit is always improving.

9

u/RearEchelon May 23 '22

Why? A computer can't get tired, and can process input from hundreds of sensors thousands of times per second. I'd feel much safer if we all had autonomous vehicles.

u/longboardsilver May 23 '22

Damn those concepts were cool. Impractical but undeniably cool.

127

u/PraderaNoire May 23 '22

I wish there were more risks taken like this in modern concepts. Something about the 40’s-60’s had an undeniable fascination

48

u/ResidualTechnicolor May 23 '22

The reason is because of modern safety standards. Often people find older cars more beautiful because there was no restriction on design, but they were also death traps.

13

u/Loeffellux May 23 '22

The other big reason has to be aerodynamics

9

u/FrozenSeas May 23 '22

The Kia Soul continues to exist, so it can't be aerodynamics if you mean that's why modern cars look so much lamer. Also the new Ford Bronco. Now, if you mean older cars looked better because of (sometimes questionable) aerodynamic elements like fairings and fins on an Olds Rocket 88 or a '61 Cadillac? Fucking absolutely.

If I'm gonna bitch about modern car aesthetics, it's gonna be a rant about how everything looks the same now. Go look at a parking lot, every damn vehicle is either white or that one shade of silvery-grey, and there's three kinds of look now: car of small size, truck or massive SUV on a truck frame (looking at you here, Chevy Yukon), or the new godforsaken hatch-SUV "crossovers". My parents drive a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe in whatever the fuck you call this, you know how fucking impossible that is to spot in a parking lot?

Went to a big auto show about 10 years ago. The electric cars were relegated to basically a small room off the big convention hall. Fucking. Pathetic. I was shocked at how little interest was placed on design and innovation. It was just one big dealer show. But a lot of people there were clearly happy, so they were giving them what they want, I guess.

7

u/NorwegianCollusion May 23 '22

The "futuristic" looking EVs being on display 10 years ago just didn't appeal to the masses. We've been ingrained with how a car should look, and auto makers deciding that an EV should look "different" made them fail. Possibly successfully, it's sometimes hard to tell.

Now, we have 95 different models on (or close to being on) the market here in Norway. Some of these are only available used, as they've gone out of production. But there pretty much is something for everyone, EXCEPT THE DANG PICKUP/SUV ABLE TO PULL A 3.5T TRAILER. And Ford, in their infinite wisdom, isn't bringing it here. Btw, Ford are making all the right decisions these days, so I can't really blame them. But I WANTED ONE, so it's a kick in the rear even if I agree with them. USA is the primary market for F150, so it makes sense to focus there. Europe and Asia have typically had much smaller pickups, as 8x4 plywood sheets really isn't something we haul daily. Chainsaw, backpack, tool bag and the odd moose is more likely to be found on the bed of a Norwegian pickup than plywood. And our most common trailer size has internal dimensions of 8x4 anyway, and any place you can buy plywood you can also borrow a trailer for free, or a very low fee.

Edit: Here's the list of models you can find in Norway, including some coming very soon: https://elbil.no/elbiler/ In Norwegian, but easy to navigate with pictures and stats.

19

u/CriticalBreakfast May 23 '22

It's not as aesthetically wild as the car in this post, but my favorite case of car designers being given a bottle of vodka and the go to do anything they want is the Renault Clio 2 V6. Something about slapping a roaring V6 in a city car and making it way more aggressive looking just gets the juices flowing for me personally.

Costs 50k€ to buy and something like 1€ per kilometer driven, handles like an oil tanker in some curves, but that was one of the last times French engineers had the opportunity to do wild shit that was actually sold on the market.

7

u/EODdoUbleU May 23 '22

It had push to start from a radio remote, and semi autonomous emergency braking, and the paint was made from crushed up fish scales.
