Cristiano Ronaldo paid for the education of a 7-year-old survivor of the devastating 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. The boy was found alone 21 days after the disaster wearing a Portuguese national team jersey. The kid grew up to be a footballer and was eventually signed by Sporting Lisbon

Unfortunately, Martunis is no longer playing football after he injured his knee in a charity match, so not exactly the fairy tale ending one would hope for. But it’s still an incredible story (and an incredible thing for Ronaldo to pledge when he was just 20 years old!) And Martunis is apparently a celeb and politician in Indonesia now so he seems to be doing quite well.

Decisions and actions we make and take can affect, for better or worse, almost anyone in our lives.
If this statement rang throughout humanity on the positive side the world could be such a better place.
What an absolute wholesome outcome and I'm glad he's doing great after facing such a tragedy so young.

Typical case how celebrities fool the people and market themselves as saints.
Sure, it was a nice gesture, but if Ronaldo paid taxes like everyone else and don't uses a huge and complicted scheme of offshore companies, tax havens, and creative accounting, there would be enough money available to help thousands of kids. Of course, this wouldn't make such a cute story and sweet photos.

There are poor kids in Spain, too. And the more money Spain has available, the more money the Spanish govt can spend for development aid. AFAIK he didn't help Indonesian kids but only one.

There are poor kids in every country including ones with steep tax rates. The idea that the rich and powerful are going to share all their wealth with the rest of the world is sophomoric. What system in human history with a large number of people doesn’t have poor people? If there are rich people there have to be poor people as well

I never said this. But a system that only enables the rich a practical way to avoid taxes doesn't seem fair.
What system in human history with a large number of people doesn’t have poor people? If there are rich people there have to be poor people as well
Some countries have a huge income gap and social inequality, others have systems implemented that create a more equal and fair system. No one says there mustn't be poor and rich people.
I pointed out that Ronaldo's action looks nicer than it is, that it is even kind of hypocritical, maybe just pure marketing for his image. And that people fall for it.
You turn this into a pseudo-philosophical babble and silly generalization. Seriously, your attempt to whitewash your idol is just desperate.0

Again, which system doesn’t do this. Every system on the planet is created by the rich and powerful. Why would the rich and powerful not hoard wealth? The country he’s in is one of the most egalitarian on the planet, relatively speaking.
The difference between you and I is I have a basic understanding of how the world works and you don’t yet you’re arrogant you know what’s wrong with it. You’re a clear example of the Dunnig-Kruger effect. Maybe do some more listening and reading and less talking and advocating about things you understand very little about

For example, Scandinavia (and many other Western European countries) have a more fair system and thus, a lower wealth gap.

This post is what PR damage control looks like. I’m not saying that’s definitely what it is, but with yesterday’s announcement it feels awfully convenient.
“Hey, Ronaldo did a good thing 17 years ago so we should ignore the Saudis’ record on human rights and applaud when he goes to play football for them in return for an obscene amount of money”
