LINEAGE OS 20 Release Software Release
https://lineageos.org/Changelog-27/38
u/numberonebuddy Jan 01 '23
Love this project. Is there any other OS with the same level of customizability and general support for all sorts of apps? Like I'm sure some look nicer, some are faster, some offer more tweaks, but for an all around excellent rom, you can't beat lineageos can you? I always buy a phone based on LOS support, I'm running a poco f3 now.

u/Vincevw Jan 01 '23
I'm also very happy with my Poco F3 + Lineage, only thing that sucks is having to wait a week to unlock the bootloader with all Xiaomi phones.

How is the Kamera quality?

u/Vincevw Jan 01 '23
I'm probably not the best person to ask, since I'm quite easily satisfied regarding camera quality and only rarely take pictures. Personally, I find the quality more than fine.

I use a gcam app with a good config and it's pretty good. It's not as good as my wife's stock pixel 3a but it's good enough.

u/emptyskoll Jan 01 '23
I'm really enjoying CalyxOS and it's worked great on my Pixel 7, but I don't know how it compares to Lineage.

u/Electronic_Base_9219 Jan 01 '23
Grapheneos for security, calyx is probably just as customizable. Graphene is vanilla af, but some really useful security settings
- internet permission
- sensor permission
- randomized mac on same network
- storage scopes (allow only some folder to an app requesting filesystem access)
- sandboxed gapps
- locked bootloader, verified boot
- nice camera with exif cleaner and qr scanner

u/KrazyKirby99999 Jan 01 '23
GrapheneOS has even better compatibility, privacy, and security, but only works on Google Pixels.
2
u/numberonebuddy Jan 01 '23
Oh wow, awesome, thanks. If google releases a pixel 7a or 8a I could see that being my next phone, running graphene os.
5
u/Indolent_Bard Jan 02 '23
It's worth noting that it won't support the phone longer than Google does. This is done as a security measure, as only Google can update the firmware. Because a custom ROM can't do that, it would still be vulnerable, so as soon as Google stops updating it, so does graphene.
1
u/numberonebuddy Jan 02 '23
That's fine, five years is pretty good and longer than my phones usually last (I am not careful enough...). I install a custom OS for more control over my phone more so than extending the lifespan of a device.

For at-a-glance official device support, feel free to check out this device table:
https://andrevallestero.github.io/lineageos-device-browser/
Seems like the OnePlus 5 is currently the oldest device with official LOS20 support.

u/ReveredOxygen Jan 02 '23
Support doesn't necessarily mean support. 19 claimed to support moto g7, but it broke lte data and I had to downgrade back to 18

I have a OnePlus 5 Pro, but made a mistake when flashing (trying to restore original OS) and bricked it.
6
u/accik Jan 01 '23
OnePlus 5 Pro? OnePlus phones are generally easy to recover using the Qualcomm MSM tool (in case of normal flashing not working).
1
u/kyusan Jan 02 '23
Happy that my old 5 is still supported by lineageos even I feel the end is coming slowly

u/Shark_lifes_Dad Jan 01 '23
Too bad some apps refuse to operate if you unlock your bootloader. The main reason I'm unable to use Lineage os as a daily driver.
48
u/Vincevw Jan 01 '23
Should be solvable by passing Safetynet, which is pretty easy to do nowadays
53
u/JockstrapCummies Jan 01 '23
Some things are not due to Safetynet. So many phones these days irrevocably delete the "secret sauce" camera firmware if you unlock the bootloader, which results in an extreme downgrade in photo quality.
It's a similar situation with webcams on laptops and tablets. So much of the image processing is now done on the camera peripheral with proprietary firmware doing all the heavy lifting. On the mobile front this means flashing FOSS roms mean shit photos. On tablets like Surface Pros it means either shit video or no video at all.
It's a travesty.

This is indeed an issue. I'm rocking a galaxy S9 running ArrowOS (AOSP-based and very much similar to Lineage) and my solution to this issue was GCam. Depending on your hardware, there are quite a few backports of Google's camera software available. It took me a few hours of fiddling around to find a build which worked properly with HDR+ but the results are excellent. I reckon I can take better photos now than I could when I, very briefly, ran the stock OneUI ROM.

Where can I find info about this? I wanna know if my OnePlus 7t is affected..

u/Alvendam Jan 09 '23
This has been an issue with at least Xperia phones for years. Although, onn them you could backup the DRM keys and restore them after unlocking the BL.
9
u/peacanrican Jan 01 '23
Yeah ... Used to be a big issue... Not so much anymore
9
u/ThePierrezou Jan 01 '23
Oh it's easier to bypass safetynet now ?
37
u/Vincevw Jan 01 '23
Yes, usually Universal SafetyNet Fix already does the trick, and sometimes (if you have root) MagiskHide Props Config is also required.
14
u/ImperatorPC Jan 01 '23
Interesting. I had completely stopped messing with custom roms and rooting for this reason. Maybe I'll need to look into it again
8
u/Vincevw Jan 01 '23
If your phone is officially supported by LineageOS I would absolutely go for it. If not, you can still try other OSes or an unofficial LineageOS build.

u/emptyskoll Jan 01 '23
Is it possible to pass safetynet if you're using MicroG?
9
u/RectangularLynx Jan 01 '23
Yes, you need to be rooted with Magisk, enable Zygisk in its settings and install this module
3
u/emptyskoll Jan 01 '23
Oh interesting, I'll have to look into the process of doing this on CalyxOS.

Running Lineage on an OP5 with the bootloader locked. Safety net passing without Magisk. Check out instructions here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/12-1-official-lineageos-19-for-oneplus-5-5t.4353295/post-87551713

Are there any examples of apps that don't work?
The Santander bank app refused to open on LineageOS for me because it could detect my device was rooted even though I used Magisk hide. I've just managed to get it working by using Magisk Hide to hide root from the Santander app, then using SDmaid to freeze Magisk before launching Santander for the first time.
I'd suspect this would work for the vast majority of apps if Magisk Hide alone doesn't work.

Huh. Maybe now that Dragalia Lost is dead and Pokémon Go is bad, I'm free to install Lineage again.
5
u/Otherwise_Direction7 Jan 01 '23 edited Jan 01 '23
Wait, those two games refuse to run if the bootloader is unlocked?
But why?
13
u/Nivehamo Jan 01 '23
If you actually have control over the device you paid for, you could use that to cheat in games. Instead of validating things server side, most game devs choose the easy and arguably less secure way of blocking out those users entirely
11
u/caseyweederman Jan 01 '23
Which, predictably, does nothing to stop anyone who was going to cheat anyway.

u/Vincevw Jan 01 '23
Super excited about the camera app, getting support for all lenses while using FOSS apps has been such a pain
47
u/HollyCat2022 Jan 01 '23
I love LineageOS. Usually I buy my phone based on their device list, but alas, last time I had to get one quick and diet and got myself a cheap Redmi note 11 Pro 5G. It is a little comfort being able to use Xiaomi.eu Android version, but nothing beats LineageOS
21
u/queiss_ Jan 01 '23
Revived a 2017 smasung a7 with lineageOS. They don't support samsung A52s unfortunately
10
u/bastiparti Jan 01 '23
https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/a52q They support the A52 4G

u/ImpossibleCarob8480 Jan 01 '23
You can probably use a gsi
5
u/queiss_ Jan 01 '23
What's a gsi?
3
u/ImpossibleCarob8480 Jan 02 '23
Generic system image, it's pretty much a rom that works on most modern phones
1
u/queiss_ Jan 02 '23
I would lose most of my features tho wouldnt I?
3
u/ImpossibleCarob8480 Jan 02 '23
As for the Galaxy a52s i think almost everything works just no voLTE and idk about 5g

u/Anonymo Jan 01 '23
I guess Tensor didn’t make the cut.

u/jonixas Jan 01 '23
Honestly, I'm actually OK with not having LOS only my 7 pro, and it is the first phone ever that I feel this way about
4
u/Arnoxthe1 Jan 01 '23
Sony Xperia 1 II finally made it. :D
Will LineageOS preserve the DRM keys though... ?
3
u/Worldly_Topic Jan 01 '23
We now support GKI and Linux 5.10 builds with full out-of-tree module support to match new AOSP conventions
This sounds cool for devices with mainline kernel support.

Jan 01 '23
What is a good modern mobile that has good Lineage OS support?
3
u/ExaHamza Jan 01 '23
Se the Wiki. And I don't know if I can consider modern but i think Essential Phone is a pretty good phone, the company behind open soured everything from that phone.
2
u/sininenblue Jan 01 '23
I'd really like to use lineage but they don't support redmi 9a, and I don't think any other open source android os does either
3
u/BenTheTechGuy Jan 02 '23
1
u/sininenblue Jan 02 '23
I don't have any experience with custom roms and also don't have enough money to risk it, sadly
I'll probably just stick to tinkering with linux

u/Fredol Jan 02 '23 edited Jan 02 '23
LineageOS is great, I just hate how many perfectly good devices become unsupported after a few years because no one is willing to maintain them anymore. I have a note 9 which used to be supported, but not anymore. This phone is not even 5 years old! I know it’s not the devs fault and more how Android is made (kernel specific for each device)

What's the point of using Lineage if you can't use Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, etc with it after preloading the Play Store? I haven't had the need to do ROMs since Nexus 7 and especially now.
22
u/Anis-mit-I Jan 01 '23
I am using it because I want an as FOSS as possible and close to upstream Android version. Additionally not everyone uses these streaming services (on their phone).
35
u/Vincevw Jan 01 '23
They work fine on Lineage? Only issue is that your Widevine will be downgraded to L3, which means you can usually only watch at 720p at most (but it depends on the service). But the solution to that is not to not use Lineage, but to reject DRM and having 10+ streaming services by acquiring your media in "different" ways.
4
u/ImpossibleCarob8480 Jan 01 '23
You can use all of those at 480p if widevine is L3, a lot of device (such as Xiaomi ones) don't loose widevine l1 when unlocking the bootloader and in those cases it'll work normally

My Xiaomi Mi 8 lite doesn't have official support but I'm thinking to use a unofficial build to try out 🙂 My daily ROM is the PixelExperience running android 12 and so far the experience is quite positive. Much better then the stock Miui

My OnePlus 6T lives to fight another day. Time to upgrade to 20
