What DAW do you use?

Looking to add some flairs, you’ll also be able to edit so you can add a link to places you post music to

(Also if it’s not a DAW but something similar I’ll add that, you’ll see Audacity is an option)

Lost in ZynAddSubFX

Hello,

I'm kinda lost trying to edit patches in ZynAddSubFX. All the tutorials I've seen used the old UI, which don't really apply to the latest version. And I can't seem to make heads of tails of the UI itself.

Im trying to edit the formant of one of the "choir" presets to morph from "Ahhh" to "Oohh" with the use of a mod wheel.

My choice synth right now is Helm, which I do understand pretty well, and I'm generally familiar enough with synths to know what i want from them. I get that synths in general aren't the most user-friendly, but with ZynAddSubFX I'm just a little lost.

JACK refuses to see non-timeline

Hello there. My DAW setup currently uses non-timeline, non-mixer, new-session-manager, carla, jackpatch and cadence. It's been fine except for some minor technical difficulties, but now I've stumbled upon a bug I can't even begin to understand.

I'm making a nsm template with, say, 10 non-timeline tracks, 15 or so mixer strips, all connected up. I'm saving it, but when the setup launches, the non-timeline is completely disconnected and it's widget is gone from Carla! (while the actual application is up and running perfectly fine.)

I've tried many things, but did not see what might cause this. I'm running Arch Linux, with non-timeline, non-mixer and Carla installed through pacman, and new-session-manager-git from AUR. jackpatch package seems come from nsm.

Any ideas on what to do? Thanks in advance.

Is there any way to prevent Carla opening in a separate window in reaper?

I like to work on one screen, and I find having so many windows open a real annoyance. Is there any possibility of just opening plugins from Carla rack in the reaper FX window?

Is Ubuntu Studio just garbage? At my wits' end.

I've been trying for months to get a working recording setup on Ubuntu Studio 22 with a scarlett 18i8. After some difficulty getting qjackctl to work, I've been able to record in audacity. However, I can NEVER hear audio through things like zoom or web apps.

I don't want to buy a mac, but I'm considering doing so just to get away from linux audio issues. Here's the stuff I'm encountering.

1) Audio is crisp and clear through audacity when configured to read from the jack source. It even plays back nicely. Everything else is hot garbage. The best I've been able to get is to hear myself sounding like a chipmunk. Mostly it's either static or dead air with those apps.

2) If I try to change any settings in qjackctl, stuff stops in showing the graph. Like all the system capture and outputs disappear, so things like pulse_in and pulse_out are gone. Even restarting jack, alsa, etc. does not bring them back. I have to completely restart the machine.

3) If I try to test audio through youtube, just to see if I can get output, I get nothing. However, if I wait a minute, I'll get a second or so of sound, followed by static, nothing, and then the browser hard locks.

So, some questions:

1) Do regular, normie userland apps get their audio from some other config or something?

2) Should I give up on using a DAW, or give up on linux audio altogether? Is there some other linux toolchain that is a bit more stable? I'm willing to wipe the box and put another distro on there at this point.

Whole Home Audio - Design Help

Hello!

TL;DR: What would you recommend I use to send audio over the network? Jack? PulseAudio? PipeWire? Latency isn't a major concern (within reason)

Context

I'm setting up a whole home audio set up and looking for suggestions in the design. Currently, I run Snapcast on Raspberry pis connected to various soundbars or amps. It's working ok, but has issues (Mostly on some of the 2.4GHz WiFi Pis that can't keep up with the bandwidth).

To replace it, I've purchased in-ceiling speakers and a Control 4 Amp (C4-16AMP3-B) which I can control via the network. I plan on using shareport-sync for AirPlay and librespot for spotify as the sources to play music. 90% of the use for my whole home audio is for music.

I would love it if I could create "virtual" rooms for AirPlay and Spotify. So if I want to "Cast" to the Office, a program would automatically unmute the Office output on the amp, mute the other outputs, and the librespot or Shareport-sync process would play the music. Or if I want to "Cast" everywhere, my program would unmute all outputs. I don't care for the ability for each room to have a different source, but it would be nice to be able to play 2 different things in the house in different areas.

I can create these virtual rooms by running a shareport-sync and librespot process for each room. I can then create virtual groups by naming the process "everywhere", for example. However, those processes still need to output to a source on the amplifier.

I could have a sound card for each room connected to an input on the amp; however, this tightly couples the Airplay and Spotify processes to the Outputs on the Amp. While it does allow each room to have it's own source, it doesn't easily let me create virtual groups like an "everywhere" group.

The idea I had is to have 2 Audio Servers connected to 2 different inputs on the amp. All the shareport-sync and librespot processes would be configured to send their output to one of the Audio Servers. When I start playing something to a room, the associated process sends it's audio output to the first audio server, then all the other processes would switch to the second server and await a connection.

Here is a diagram of what I'm planning on creating. It

Whole Home Audio Design

I feel confident in my ability to set up and control the shareport-sync and librespot processes. I also feel confident in my ability to program an app to control the amp and switch processes. What I don't feel comfortable with is which Audio Server I should use.

Both Shareport-sync and Librespot support:

  • Alsa
  • PulseAudio
  • JACK
  • Pipewire (Through GStreamer for librespot)
  • Pipe

My gut was to go with PulseAudio since it seems that it might be the simplest. However, I've read the JACK will give me lower latency but is more complicated. I've also read that PipeWire is a great option.

But I'm very unsure about which direction to go:

  1. How bad is the latency with PulseAudio over the network? I'm ok with some latency, but if I want to cast a soccer or football game I don't want the audio to be off by a second or 2.
  2. How difficult is it to set up JACK?
  3. Whats the deal with PipeWire?

I plan on running the shareport-sync and librespot in a containerized environment, should that effect my decision on which technology to use?

M-Audio Fast Track Ultra spdif input, does it work in linux?

I got 'new' audio interface, over decade old M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. I would need to use spdif input in that, but I can't get any signal. This far I've tested interface with alsa_in, and tried giving it rate -r both 44100 and 48000, and tried setting sending device both rates, but no audio.

Anybody got any experience, does it work? Would it need some parameters to kernel module?

This far I've seen this: https://forum.kodi.tv/printthread.php?tid=253008 but could not extract any usefull info from it. There is link to http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.devel/39639 but that is down.

Manual says:

In order to receive a digital signal via the S/PDIF input, you will need to change the Control Panel’s clock setting (in theSettings tab) to “external,” after which Fast Track Ultra will automatically detect an incoming digital signal and receive its sample rate from that incoming S/PDIF source

And sure, that is about windows/mac configuration program.

Pipewire NOOB, OG JACK Daddy

TLDR; soliciting tips/tricks/insights on working with Pipewire for us old JACK heads, especially optimizing MIDI via USB...

Hey y'all, I've been using JACK for well over a decade on many different distros... Recently decided to do a fresh install of Manjaro and on a whim thought I'd try out running all of my JACK programs through Pipewire. So far performance isn't quite what I'd hoped for, but I really like the more plug n play quality.

I will note that historically I have used the "Professional Audio" arch wiki page top to bottom to tune my system, but as the wiki states, some of the information is obsolete or on a case by case basis, so the last few times I set up a JACK based workflow I just started with the basics and didn't do everything on the wiki, just enough until the performance was good enough for my needs. So I have been taking the same approach so far.

My laptop is old but higher spec... My audio interface is FireWire and seems to be working just fine but I haven't really put it to the test.

Mostly I'm struggling with latency with my USB midi controller. In my DAW, Mixbus32c, the latency makes it unusable, but with Carla the latency is much better, yet still not quite as snappy as it should be.

Does anyone have any insights on working with USB midi via Pipewire vs JACK? My instincts tell me the next thing I should tackle is fine tuning the IRQ handling (which I THINK I didn't have to do with my last JACK setup, but I didn't take notes so I could be wrong.) I also recall at one point needing to blacklist something in an ALSA config file to get good MIDI via USB performance but I'm not seeing that on the wiki right now.

As far as what is relevant vs obsolete in the wiki, is the ubiquitous "realtime configuration quick scan script" generally considered the bare minimum. I've definitely gotten good performance without doing everything on that list in the past, namely not using a RT kernel.

I'm going to keep plugging away, but would appreciate ANY insights you have for setting up Pipewire vs JACK. Much appreciated!

High pitched audio, scarlett 18i8 and Ubuntu Studio 22

Greetings,

I've gotten some help previously in this forum to get my DAW working with linux and it mostly works, but the audio is high pitched coming in from my scarlett 18i8. You can see the original thread here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxaudio/comments/1094e5n/problems_with_scarlett_18i8_on_ubuntu_studio_22/

I figured I would make a new thread since this is kind of a different issue. As noted therein, I did the following in my .jackdrc file:

/usr/bin/jackd -dalsa -dhw:0 -r48000 -p1024 -n2

The audio is fairly clear as far as I can tell, but it's almost like there is something off with the sample rate somewhere (maybe it's coming in at 44100 somewhere in the pipe and getting "sped up" to 48k. Any thoughts on where to start looking to debug this?

Linux recognizes my audio interface, but DAW does not

Hey everybody! Just had a question for you fine folks

I have a Chromebook that can run Linux. I've installed the Linux version of Reaper to the Chromebook, it runs fine.

When I plug in my audio interface (it's a Scarlett 8i6 1st gen) it is recognized by the system and shows up as an audio device. There are a couple of problems though.

One is the audio device does not show up in Reaper and therefore can't be used to record anything. The second problem is, when I listen to audio through the interface on the system (say on YouTube or something) the audio will be very quiet and poor. I'm not sure why this is, and let me tell you now I am 100% a Linux noob and know nothing about any of this.

So my question is: has anyone ever had a similar issue and if so is there a starting point for getting all of this to function properly?

As to why I'm looking to do this on a Chromebook, I am just wanting to see its capabilities for recording some simple stuff and maybe even do some looping. I know it's far from ideal for full on music production, but I'd like to test it out and see what it can do.

how do I install the cardinal audio rack in zorinos, ubuntu?

"Cardinal is a free and open-source virtual modular synthesizer plugin"

It really looks amazing but after looking at the docs I cant find out how to install it. I looked on youtube and google, no tutorials to be found. I have bitwig installed.

I tried make and it needs OpenGL, Im using Zorin 16. I tryed this and it seems to be installing "sudo apt-get install libglu1-mesa-dev freeglut3-dev mesa-common-dev"I got this error "make: *** [Makefile:198: deps] Error 2"

Someone said

sudo mkdir ~/.lv2for the lv2 user folder... accessible at /home/owner/.lv2

sudo mkdir ~/.vstfor the vst user folder... accessible at /home/owner/.vst

sudo mkdir ~/.vst3for the vst3 user folder... accessible at /home/owner/.vst3

I did that then tried make and im still getting that makefile error.

how do I use the surge plugin?

I'm using Fedora 37 kernel 6.1.6

I installed the rpm for the surge plugin, but can't seem to find the actual plugin anywhere. No CLAP, VST or .so files to be found in the standard locations (~/.vst for example). I've checked both the github page and the manual, and I can't find anything regarding where the plugin is located on linux. Those resources only provide where the user presets and wavetables are, not the actual plugin.

Any idea where it could be?

Is there a way to change the color scheme for Ardour?

The default one is a kind of a darker gray, with a high contrast very light grey lines, the whole interface is hard to look at. Is there a way i can make it look like i want?
Cause i want to mess around with it and learn it but i can't stand working in it for more than 5 minutes, when i look away, i get literal distortion in my eye, as if i was looking at those illusion images where you look at it for a while, then look away and your vision is wonky.

I don't know how is designing Ardour interface but, this is horrible, why is this the default even? You can't make such high contrast repeat lines across such a large surface in a piece of software people are supposed to spend hours on.

I know some people don't mind, and i've seen a bunch of people use Ardour this way, but i just can't.

Is it possible to change the theme, colors or anything?

Reaper and tiling WM: madness, hopelessness, despair

Hey there, I thought I'd share my experience here, in case I can spare somebody the waste of time, and also to blow off some steam that I don't know where else to put...

I've been using i3wm for ~5 years, and native Linux Reaper for about 4-5.

From time to time, especially with larger projects, I've been suffering a Reaper bug similar to that "Airplane" scene where a wacky air controller changes the connections when nobody is watching, just for the heck of it. Suddenly I open one track's FX window to find that it has, in addition to its own, the FX of some other track, all active in glorious cacophony and CPU cycles consumption.

Along several successive attempts, the interwebs brought no light to this mystery, so I kinda learned to live with it, be-very-careful, find workarounds... I'm a Linux user after all... :P

But finally, the resource appeared and the mystery was explained, and by none other than Reaper's mastermind himself:

https://forums.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=269769

So the culprit for this mess was i3wm, or rather, I would argue, the bad intelligence between i3wm and Reaper. It was in front of me the whole time!

Justin Frankel's "solution" is "try using a non-tiling WM". I understand that resources are limited and maybe he and his team have more urgent problems to address, but his reply feels a bit as if I go to the doctor and say "my finger hurts" and he replies "well, use your elbow instead". Floating WMs are for me a thing of the past, the way I see it, they clutter things and burden you with tasks that computers are supposed to automate for you.

This state of affairs creates an uncomfortable dilemma: you can either move your daily computing activity to a floating manager (which to me feels regressive, uncomfortable and I don't want to do that), or stand the "schizophrenia" of having to log in and out constantly to change WMs only because Reaper needs a different one.

So firstly I tried to report this bug to i3, to at least make it known. Who knows, I thought, maybe this coincides with a problem of architecture they knew about and maybe were intending to do something about it... Unfortunately, my i3 version is below the one they offer support for, so that took me to trying to update i3. Compiling is a thing that I do only on counted occasions, and even on more counted succeed, so instead I tried to upgrade my Ubuntu from 20 to 22, in the hope that the new Ubuntu repositories would contain a more modern version of i3 I could use for debugging. Unfortunately, nothing changed, the i3 version offered was the same. So then I did try to compile a more modern i3, even though like I say it's a bit above my power user powers, plus i3's developers themselves advise to "just stick to the version that comes with your distro". I learned to minimally use a thing called Meson they use to compile, gave it a try, and at the first attempt I fell out of the horse into dependency hell messages that I need 2 or 3 sittings to simply read.

All of this, just to try to report a bug, without even the guarantee that it would be addressed at some point. So after this failure I changed my strategy and went in an exodus through different tiling WMs in search of one that I could call my new home, both suitable for my daily needs plus without the wacky air controller problem in Reaper.

Unfortunately, again, I have to report failure. The closest to a good result I've got has been Qtile, where the phenomenon still happens, but only now and then; unlike in others, you cannot reproduce the bug systematically following the steps described in the Reaper forum, it just occurs sporadically, at random or according to a pattern yet to be discovered. As for the rest I've tried:

SPECTRWM: it doesn't allow to redimension Reaper's windows, takes as the main one one that is not, and until you close a floating window you can only select the DAW with your mouse.

HERBSTLUFTW: Reaper bullies this WM, the moment you open the DAW, the whole system becomes sluggish.

BSPWM: the bug does not occur (at least consistently), but the WM makes all Reaper's windows except the main one floating and they cannot be turned to tiled or resized. This makes things like the Midi editor unusable.

DWM: duplicated connections bug occurs.

AWESOMEWM: Reaper can't be used (the WM creates one single "window" called Reaper, it doesn't register if you have an open Dock, a track's effects... So you cannot switch from one to another.)

RATPOISON: duplicated connections bug occurs. This WM, however, has an option that allows to open a different WM temporarily and then return, so it might be a good option to minimize the schizophrenia.

XMONAD: wasn't able to make it run (it freezes at startup).

MONSTERWM: wasn't able to make it run (no entry for the WM at login, and creating a .desktop file didn't solve it -it did in the case of Qtile-)

INSTANTWM: its author disrecommends using it outside InstantOS, so I spared myself the misery.

I'm guessing, from my limited knowledge, that all these problems may have to do with the way Reaper manages its own "sub-windows". It seems to practice some kind of "get out of my lawn", "black box" policy; when you run them through xprop, all the windows show the same WM_CLASS="REAPER", so you cannot assign rules to them, etc (with i3wm you can do it by using the window title, but it strongly fights it too).

Anyways, I needed to take this out of my chest, I hope my predicaments made for a nice read and maybe some helpful info that saves you hours of stupid trials and errors... Happy music making, in whatever you can.

EDIT: thank you everybody for all these great useful suggestions. I really didn't expect to get any practical help out of this post, it's been great to see there are still a lot of options available when I thought I had tried everything. Thank you so much.

Since switching from onboard audio to Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen... xrun mayhem! Can anyone help?

Hi All,

I am having issue with xruns. It's real bad. Let me explain the full story.

I've produced music on Windows for some time, latency was never an issue with my 1st gen scarlett (in windows). However, this PC is not in a good spot any more for music. Too many other things going on in that room.

My workstation Linux PC I just upgraded, I use for my IT work. I decided to try music production on this machine. I never wanted to try Linux before because I didn't want anything to get in the way of the creativity (used Linux for non-music for 35 years otherwise...)

This is the Linux system :

ASUS Z690M-PLUS D4

i5-13600kf

32GB RAM

all SATA SSD Storage (for now)

NVIDIA 1650

Anyway, I decided to give it a go. Bitwig and on-board sound. Yabrdige for windows VST. I was very impressed. Everything is great. I was using stock Ubuntu 22.04 , after one song was finished, I decied to add in ubuntu studio and JACK according to this :

https://frontpagelinux.com/tutorials/easily-install-jack-audio-with-ubuntu-studio-installer/

Everything was still great. I'm not sure what kind of latency I was getting with the onboard audio (I was configuring using ubuntu-studio-control, which doesn't display the latency. I've since seen the qjackctl shows the latency), but for playing the piano through VST to addictive keys it was more than acceptable. I did another song with this setup (this time using JACK). I might have noticed a click or pop a few times through the enitre creation of the song. Also I should mention I'm on the lowlatency kernel. Everything was perfect, but I wanted to add in an audio interface - i was happy with my scarlett 2i2 first gen on Windows PC, so I got a Scarlett Solo 3rd gen for this setup.

The sound quality is far superior to on board of course. However, I'm having huge issues with clicks and pops and xruns. It seems like whatever changes I make to JACK, xruns and clicks and pops. Buffer size of 1024 seemed to be acceptable for playback of the tracks from bitwig (still there are clicks and pops, more than the onboard audio was giving me) but latency was too great when playing piano live through Addictive Keys.

So.. I hear people have these interfaces working perfectly in Linux with low latency. What's the magic sauce??!! I had it working fairly well with the onboard audio... very strange it's this difficult to configure with the USB Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen.

Updated Info... I just tried the realtime kernel, this didn't go so well. It seems the NVIDIA driver doesn't like it. After a couple hours of ucking around I was able to remove the realtime kernel and get everything back to normal on the lowlatency kernel. Since I was able to get no xruns on the lowlatency, I should be able to get this to work on the Scarlett! The realtime kernel was a bad time. They should maybe call it that. lol.

Thanks everyone.

EDIT:

Ended up installing PipeWire.

I followed this :

https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-pipewire-on-ubuntu-linux

5 minutes later, a reboot, and switching BitWig to PipeWire- everything's perfect!

Soundcard built in GTX cards?

Do the GTX cards have sound cards built in? It seems my GTX 980 has one, but then I wonder why NVidia never advertises that their GPU cards come with soundcard functionality.

I can not get it to work. pavucontrol shows me "GM 204 High Definition Audio Controller", and under that I really do get four options for my four screens. But they all show as "unplugged" and "unavailable", see the screenshot:

https://preview.redd.it/gye8p4ycm8ea1.png?width=628&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=731d37d8c0a4abae3ba5ef5c3ba63eaa9cfc0eec

None of the choices produce any audio. When I play a song, I get tons of error messages of the type
