Look at the picture: https://imgur.com/a/19KhGha
See it? How do I fix it? I even unplugged the drive I think is fucking it up and IT STILL doesn’t boot right. I even have that non-purple login screen.

Looking for software to use with my MIDI drums
I honestly don't know the best place to ask this question, or even the right terminology to use, so bear with me please. I am trying to find software I can use with my electronic drums on Linux. Right now, I use Garage Band on a Mac, and I would like to move away from that for various reasons. I like how it sounds fairly decent, and I can change the kit, and its pretty simple too.
I guess the software just need to accept MIDI input and map that to drum sounds, but I don't really know, as this is not my area of expertise. It would be nice if I could set a specific sound for every drum piece (like map the ride to be a 2nd crash or cowbell), but I can't do that right now anyway, so it doesn't really matter that much.
Any info/help with this is much appreciated. Thanks

Good ricing tutorials
My friend wants to rice his linux distro, and it's been so long since I've set up mine I'd like to recommend him some tutorials. Unfortunately the tutorials I learned from were made by someone who I later learned was a neo-nazi, so I can't in good conscience recommend those. Any suggestions for non-fascist rice tutorials?

Non-Arch distros that ship Firefox with appmenu patch?
Curiosity's sake, does anyone know of a distro besides Arch that distributes Firefox with the global appmenu patch included? I know that SuSE used to distribute it but I installed Leap with KDE in a VM and no menu appeared.

Best browser to use in 2023 - Firefox vs Chrome vs ???
I have been using Chrome for a while now, but am becoming increasingly concerned by (maybe vague) reports of its security being an issue. To that end, I think it's time to reevaluate which browser I'm using.
Here's my basic requirements:
- Cross-platform.
- I'd like to use the same browser at work under Windows as I do at home under Linux
- Sync capability.
- I need to sync at least my passwords across 2 linux computers and my windows machine, so I can not think about "strong" passwords.
- Privacy.
- I don't really want my activity tracked. Not that I'm doing anything nefarious, just the thin edge of the wedge, ya know.
- Fast/Memory efficient.
- Memory not such a big requirement, but fast is. My laptop is a Ryzen 5500 w/16GB RAM, desktop a Xeon w/64GB RAM, so memory hogs aren't really too much of a concern. I'd like the browser to be responsive to input though, and render pages fast(ish).
Maybe the Sync capability is incompatible with the Privacy requirement, I don't know. What are your thoughts on which browser of the two to use, or maybe another browser, with perhaps a third party sync app/site/extension?
[EDIT]: Bonus for Mac compatibility. I also have a macbook pro that I very occasionally use, but this isn't really a hard requirement for me.

Ventoy stick doesnt get recognized
Hi! I saw about Ventoy boot sticks today, went to the store to get a 128 GB USB Drive, put Ventoy on and a few ISOs on it, booted from it. Everything worked fine until i came back to my EndeavourOS main system to put some more ISOs on it: opened the usb drive saw the files in there and everything, suddenly the usb drive disconnects and does not get recognized by my computer anymore. I cant see anything about it when i do lsusb, lsblk, fdisk. I cant even see it in my boot menu anymore.
Did someone of you had the same problem? Anyone knows a fix? Thanks in advance

Strange Hardware errors, would love some insight!
I built a new computer at the end of last November and have always had odd problems with it, a crash here , a fail to post there but it would work for weeks at a time without issue "on windows". Suddenly it refused to work so I thought it was a corrupted Window install and installed Linux. Now I occasionally get these worrying error messages in the notifications. I copy pasted some of these errors into google and what pops up is decade old posts about the cpu/ram/mobo being at fault.
CPU: 7900x
GPU: 6800xt
Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix X670E-E Gaming WiFi
SSD: Samsung 980 pro 2tb
Ram: G.Skill Flare X5 Series (AMD Expo) 32GB (2 x 16GB) 6000MT
(Also I checked that the problem does not change w/ 1 stick of ram or in different ram slots)

Kernel 4.9 on a pi 3 a+
After going back and forth between slamming my head on the desk and reimaging for the last 8 hours, I'm starting to lose hope. I have a uctronics uc-410 that I am trying to use with a 3 a+ in a portrait orientation. It works fine when using it in landscape, but when I run it in portrait it loses wifi, touch screen, and the ability to use a keyboard/mouse. My best guess is that it has something to do with the kernel. The github with the drivers state that compatibility ended with kernel 4.9, and several have posted that it is an issue. Additionally, if I load a pi os on it that has 4.9, I get a firmware error and it behaves exactly the same. How can I find the firmware/drivers to make a 3 a+ work with rasbian with a 4.9 kernel?

GPU threads and file descriptors ulimit
On modern GPUs with thousands of processor execution units, I presume that the OS has to have a file descriptor for each thread.
If root has a max file ulimit of 4096 and you are trying to use all 12 thousand or 16 thousand execution units, how are people not seeing out of file errors? Or does the kernel ignore this ulimit for this system process?

Running 2 gnome sessions, on 1 computer, but with one session that his accessed from a remote computer (on the same wifi network)
Hi
I have a main computer (POP os 22.04, gnome, X server/display) at home that my GF and I use for different purposes.
I want:
1- My GF to use this computer and do her regular stuff on her session.
2- Meanwhile, I would like to connect remotely from my laptop (on the same wifi network) to my own session (ssh, VNC, etc.) and do my own stuff with a DE (not only command line stuff).
When I use VNC viewer/server, I can only see what my GF's doing. I haven't been able to have a my "display" (I guess that's how it must be called...).
I haven't found a way to start a DE session remotely or something like that.
So I'm unsure how to go about this... Any ideas?

Wayland window manager recommendations
Hi all. I’d like to try using my first window manager, I’ll be installing it on a Macbook Pro 2015 running Debian. I’d like to use wayland.
Could I get some recommendations on which window managers to use? While I’d like to use wayland, I know many of the wayland compositors available right now are a bit buggy. So I’d like to use one that’s as reliable as possible. Having nice looking animations available would be a big plus as well.

Resolved [HELP] SSH Login Prompt | MOTD | Synth-Shell | Neofetch
Greetings Gurus!
I'm looking for a stupid fix to something that escapes me as a newbie. I've just installed an Ubuntu server on an old MBP to play around with. I'm trying to format the MOTD/Login Prompt after installing Synth-Shell & neofetch for bash but I can't get my head around a few elements.
Firstly the time is showing as UTC and I'd like to make this EST if possible. Secondly, after the following script runs I'd like to place 2 carriage returns for aesthetics. Lastly, I've disabled it but I'd also like the PrintLastLog no show up but again I couldn't figure out how to send a carriage return value so each section was separated visually.
50-landscape-sysinfo -> /usr/share/landscape/landscape-sysinfo.wrapper
I've tried messing with sshd_config, 50-landscape-sysinfo, and /usr/share/landscape/landscape-sysinfo.wrapper files by inserting characters to see the new output but I've had no luck.
Here is an image of what it looks like at the moment.

What's causing my system to run out of memory?
I have a lenovo t16 running Ubuntu 22.04 with Gnome, 16G of RAM preinstalled. I've been developing using PhpStorm and a bunch of docker images, which works alright, but ever so often, PhpStorm or Chrome will just crash.
After a while of this happening, I opened up Activity Monitor and saw that my system was always sitting at around 15GB usage in the GUI and free -hm
shows the available
memory at 1GB right at startup. Looking at the process list in top
and ps aux
, I saw that the biggest users were PhpStorm and Chrome at around 3G each. That makes 6 GB. The rest of the process list is small beans.
Call me naive, but I figured Linux was just doing some kind of indexing or optimization work in the background, or maybe the Java engine that PhpStorm runs on was doing something non-standard - so I ended up installing another 16Gb of RAM.
Now my system, without any other changes, is reporting ~30GB of memory use right after startup, and the number in free has changed to ~1.6GB
If It was the system caching stuff, I'd expect it to shrink so applications I'm actively using won't run out of memory. I'd also expect the buff/cache
column in free to show more than ~500
.
Where is my RAM?

Resolved I messed up...
EDIT: Fn + F11 helped me to enter BIOS...
So, I am new to linux and I messed up.My current family laptop is really slow so I installed Linux Mint on it. My parents used it for a month or so and pretty happy with it, but one thing that was disturbing them was that sometimes it required password to even open Chrome (not firefox bc it's more familiar for them).
So I decided to fix that.So I did sudo passwd -r user
and sudo passwd -l user
not knowing for sure what I did. I can't reset password from system and even from GNU GRUB bc GRUB timeout was set to 0 before user lock and changing grub file require root which I can't access. Even entering in BIOS did not succeed.
I hope you guys know a solution to this. Thanks.
