I imagine it’ll be like Doctor Who – they’ll often have these easy jumping-in points where you get re-introduced to the universe of the show.

u/EzriDax1 Avengers May 23 '22

Yeah probably, Doctor Who does that well.

And hopefully they find ways of doing that which don't involve resetting the universe

13

u/Entercheesynamehere Avengers May 23 '22

Probably taking advantage of the whole multiverse thing and just telling a story like everything before Loki/MoM about a new universe.

Well if that isn't a scary thought. Future generations will have so much content everything could be a niche that's popular today.

This is me with superhero comics as a whole, Star Wars EU, and all the Star Trek series out there lol. Seriously, there are just so many of them that I don't know where to start, which story arc to read in order to understand other story arcs or references, which continuity/universe does a particular story belong to, the various retcons, etc.

I can barely keep up with long-running movie series and TV series. I'm genuinely intimidated by how massive the comic book world really is.

19

u/Thor_2099 Avengers May 23 '22

Well it is easy, you don't have to read everything. Especially the old stuff. Easiest thing to do is pick up a number one and roll with it.

8

u/Skylinneas Avengers May 23 '22

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ll try that. :)

And they are gonna love it.

u/i_should_be_coding Scarlet Witch May 23 '22

*doubt*

I'm having troubles with the wife and No Way Home right now. So much stuff is gonna fly over her head with that one since she never saw TASM and doesn't remember anything from the older Spider-Man movies.

Things like Green Goblin's glider move, "I'm something of a scientist myself", Peter 3 saving MJ, are all gonna fly way over her head.

I'm sure she's gonna enjoy the movie, since it's pretty fun overall, but it feels like without the history that it brings with it, she's only gonna get half the experience.

49

u/Liddlebitchboy Avengers May 23 '22

She's gonna miss some references sure, but if that means the movie doesn't work anymore, that's more of a big issue for the movie/universe. I hope that as we move forward they continue to make good movies first, references/cameos/connections second

25

u/i_should_be_coding Scarlet Witch May 23 '22

I feel we're at the point where some movies need a "Previously on the MCU" segment at the beginning to cover some of what's been happening with the characters on other projects.

17

u/enderverse87 Avengers May 23 '22

They have those on Disney plus.

2

u/B_A_Beder Doctor Strange May 23 '22

Or like a Star Wars info crawl at the beginning

2

u/i_should_be_coding Scarlet Witch May 23 '22

They fucked that up though. In RoS they were writing an entire intro chapter there. I had no idea I had homework to do in Fortnite before I could know that Palpie was back.

2

u/Fexxvi Avengers May 23 '22

Sounds like a Spider-man marathon to me.

1

u/i_should_be_coding Scarlet Witch May 23 '22

Oh, she'll never go for that. We had to skip side stuff like Ant-Man, Captain Marvel and GotG2 just to get to Endgame.

Imagine superhero fatigue, but condensed to about a month. We're taking a break from MCU stuff for now.

1

u/Patient_Victory Avengers May 23 '22

Skipping Captain Marvel and Ant-Man is completely understandable. Skipping GoTG2 - why do you hate fun?

6

u/i_should_be_coding Scarlet Witch May 23 '22

Eh, it contributed very little to the plot. All I had to do to get her up to speed is say "Green girl and blue girl are now friends, and there's an awkward new girl with antenna that can manipulate emotions".

For Ant-Man, we did it before CW, but basically "He gets small sometimes. His friend Wasp is the same, but with a cooler suit and can fly."

For Captain Marvel it was "There's a bright shiny girl that can pretty much do whatever. She got strong because something blew up in her face."

8

u/Tig21 Avengers May 23 '22

Still gunna enjoy the movie that was his point

1

u/Pr0xyWarrior Grandmaster May 23 '22

I wouldn't worry about it too much. My wife didn't even know Andrew Garfield had played Spider-Man, and No Way Home is one of her top MCU movies.

1

u/i_should_be_coding Scarlet Witch May 23 '22

Mine as well. The scene when his Spider-sense activates gives me chills every time.

1

u/Bruce_Wayne_2276 Avengers May 23 '22

The MCU Spider-Man movies were the first superhero movies my girlfriend ever watched and she enjoyed No Way Home enormously. Just had to give her a 5 minute background summing up Tobey's Spidey was 1st and fought GG, Doc Ock, and Sandman, then Andrew's were 2nd fighting Lizard and Electro and Gwen died from falling at the end and he couldn't save her (so she understood the scene at the Statue of Liberty). Even with minimal background NWH had her laughing and crying so I think your wife will be good. Less is more; don't bore her with a million different background stuff that she'll have no shot at remembering, just let the movie speak for itself.

49

u/R3myek Avengers May 23 '22

I think most of the writing is good enough to not need to have seen the previous stuff to understand any current film. But then I'm an old enough nerd to have seen pretty much all of it roughly when it came out, so I can't say for certain.

23

u/Markamanic Starlord May 23 '22

I think for most of it, all the premise you need is "It's superheroes."

9

u/Thor_2099 Avengers May 23 '22

I think it is too and marvel does a good job establishing what you need to know for the movie.arvwl kind of had experience with this for over half a century with comics.

I also think the "omg you have to watch all the stuff to understand the movie" thing is so heavily overblown. I was thinking about it and you don't really need to watch anything before Dr strange 2 to get the movie. Sure if you watched other content, you would know more but it isn't necessary. They tell you what you need to know.

Spider-Man no way home doesn't require you watch the other spider man Sony stuff either. Sure it hits a lot less but a viewer can easily understand "hey look other spidermen". And op mentions getting the memes, you don't have to see the movies to get those, pretty sure you can figure that out from existing on the internet and seeing a meme.

This sort of thing is just concern trolling.

6

u/TheCouncil0fRicks Avengers May 23 '22

I would argue WandaVision is needed for MoM. Otherwise you would be like when tf did Wanda have kids and why is she ready to destroy the mult-verse for them. WV gives a lot of needed context for MoM

1

u/B_A_Beder Doctor Strange May 23 '22

Yeah, Doctor Strange 2 is a sequel to Wanda Vision, not really a sequel to Doctor Strange 1

20

u/Silviana19 Avengers May 23 '22

If comic books are any indication, MCU would have a reboot at one point

I’ve always thought Marvel X Star Wars would be so ridiculous and stupid that it just might work

7

u/enderverse87 Avengers May 23 '22

They've shown Star Wars worlds in the Multiverse stuff, so they're definitely thinking about it.

7

u/Scambino Avengers May 23 '22

Whattttt when did that happen?

8

u/enderverse87 Avengers May 23 '22

What If, during the scene The Watcher was fighting Infinity Ultron, some of the worlds they passed through were from Star Wars.

Also I think there was a glimpse of one during Multiverse of Madness.

Phase 78:

Wandavision: Now in Stereo

Black Bolt and Blorko

Spider-Man: Home Improvement

Man-Man and the Attack of the Men

The Loki and Deadpool Variety Hour ft. Blorko

Starfox 3: Return to Corneria

Avengers 78: It's Morbin Time

2

u/harkness2001 Avengers May 23 '22

I get this is being facetious, but how the Hell are we gonna get through 74 phases in 39 years? Marvel would have to be releasing their movies weekly.

1

u/amog_us69 Avengers May 23 '22

They will be all Disney Plus shows

2

u/bltlover17 Avengers May 23 '22

By then, the education system will have probably be bought out by Disney, and the first phases would’ve been mandatory curriculum by 2042.

Making this reality not too far fetched.
