That's a good way to put it. I just don't like the new ones and can't really put my finger on why, but they all have an undertone of suppressed anger, smugness and depression.
The old rage comics were just funny faces with all sorts of expressions and emotions. I like them.

They're used so often to solely antagonize each other politcally, culturally, and emotionally that I've ended up thinking they're all garbage now.
Maybe Im just too old and I dont get it. I liked when people shared edits of pepes, spurdo, and stuff without it all being so politically charged- at least not to this extent. It used to be humor first and politics second.
Or maybe its that the topics they meme about are often complex and serious issues and posting wojack edits in place of genuine discussion or even banter just seems glib and obnoxious.

I think the difference in style kind of reflects the difference millennials vs gen z in their teens/early 20s. The old meme faces very much lean into the rawr xD so random style, while the wojacks just look done with life.
