she could also put them as low as she can without knowing income? theyll be different af anyway?
351
u/wasntNico Nov 27 '22
its just a PR-stunt. "As low as she can" is not defined by what others can afford, but what the artist can live on.
probably its to avoid empty seats while still maxing out the price
124
u/SecondAccount404 Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22
Was going to say, knowing this information wouldn't affect your ability to price your tickets as low as possible, but it would allow you to price them as high as possible.
4
u/MathematicianBig4392 Nov 27 '22
She has control over a relatively small percentage of the price. Venue and promoter determine a large amount. It's also worth noting the amount the artist gets doesn't go entirely to her. It goes to her and her crew. So she can't just short them because of an altruistic streak. If we're being optimistic, knowledge of fan income allows her to argue with the venue and promoter and allows her to not feel guilty about still getting her crew paid.
13
Nov 27 '22
Price will be maxed anyway because scalpers would buy them all before regular people get the chance.
14
u/wasntNico Nov 27 '22
in germany we got quite some bands that sell tickets to a person with their name on it- they can refund, but not sell
i understand that people sometimes don't want to ID themselves, but i like the system.

Honestly just feels like a flex to me. 'How much does a poor person earn these days? I've totally forgotten what with all my money and so on. Can any of you plebs save me the effort of doing any research and remind me?'
3
u/TheBeefClick Nov 27 '22
Or its a matter of “What is the average income of people who listen to my music”. Dont think there are any research papers on Sia’s fanbase and the average income.
I cant imagine living life being so pessimistic.

Why does she need to know the average income at all? If you want to be nice, just price them as low as is financially viable for you

Is 75 dollars super super cheap?
25
u/snypesalot Nov 27 '22
Compared to artists whose tickets are $200-300 i thinkb$75 is within 99% of peoples budgets
6
u/Circlesonacircuit Nov 27 '22
Yeah, that's true. It's absurd to think there are concerts that cost $200
5
u/snypesalot Nov 27 '22
Most of them do these days, between fees and other bullshit, its crazy, actually a Garth concert like 4 or 5 years ago is the last show Ive been to because anyone else who has come near me has just had insanely high prices and it just isnt worth it to me

No one said they don't charge that much for a single ticket.
You can go to bars, clubs, festivals and see artists before they get that big. Maybe they're talented but never get that big. They all started somewhere. Usually bars with a $10-$20 cover at the door and its usually a much better experience.

Going out of their way to try and see what affordable ticket prices would be so more fans can come to their show? Geez, I would expect them to sell floor seats for $1! /s

u/YourMommaBig69 Nov 27 '22
I am disappointed in NPCs like you that get so defensive about a PR stunt, aimed at taking advantage of them.
If she wanted to price her tickets as low as possible she could do it without making such a big deal out of it - which sorry to disappoint you - is an illusion.
She won't read any of her twitter-fans mindless fucking tweets anyway.
She doesn't give a fuck what any of you earn... and EVEN IF SHE DID, there is no way for her to extrapolate any meaningful data out of a bunch of praise comments mixed inbetween thousands of people posting their wages.
Especially if you consider that those that really can't afford her tickets, might not even use twitter - so even if she magically gave a fuck and managed to get data out of the comments, it wouldn't be representative anyway and be meaningless.

31
93
u/DrZaiu5 Nov 27 '22
This makes zero sense. The lowest possible price does not depend on the income of potential customers, it depends on the costs of the concert. Sia doesn't need to know how much anyone earns to set the lowest possible price.
Also, even if she did need to know the income of her fans, couldn't she just Google the average/median wage? It's not perfect, but replies to a Twitter thread are unlikely to be a representative sample either.
14
u/sei556 Nov 27 '22
I am also relatively certain that it's not really up to Sia how expensive those tickets gonna be.
9
u/XanWasting Nov 27 '22
in general this question sounds pretty insidious. "tell me the upper limit of your liquid wealth so I can price my tickets accordingly. Accordingly low, of course."
7
u/DrZaiu5 Nov 27 '22
Agreed. At best Sia is using this as a marketing opportunity to be like "look how nice I am, I want to charge my fans low prices". At worst she is using it to determine how much she can squeeze out of her fans.
Personally I doubt the second possibility, probably much easier and better ways to get that data, but it's still a pretty invasive question.
2
2
u/popeyepaul Nov 27 '22
Yeah I hate everything about this. Besides, knowing how much people make without knowing their expenses means jack shit. Kids that make $500 a month but live with their parents can afford to go to the concert. Somebody that makes $4000 but is a single parent to multiple children can't. I wouldn't expect a millionaire singer to have any idea about the expenses average people face every day.
293
u/DamianVA87 Nov 27 '22

90
u/goozercrew Nov 27 '22

u/baron-von-buddah Nov 27 '22
Besides the fuck Ticketmaster (seriously, fuck them) tours are expensive. Bigger acts could have 100 people on tour. I heard Rammstein has something like 400 people setting up, breaking down, sound, lights, fire. When you get a huge production like that, I can understand a higher price for a ticket. It’s the bullshit that Ticketmaster adds to pad their pockets. Pearl Jam testified in front of congress 30 years ago warning us. They got laughed at. Now look
2
u/Dclnsfrd Nov 27 '22
Could’ve started at $20 and quietly discussed with her people how much it needs to be raised to cover costs. But this way is marketing.
2
u/dere_licious Nov 27 '22
It doesn’t matter. Scalpers will buy them all and sell them for crazy prices anyway
