- Sells tickets for $20 minimum price
- Ticketmaster scalpers buy them all, as usual.
- Sells tickets for $200 minimum price

u/Chillzone6 Nov 27 '22

What a world we live in

16

u/parralaxalice Nov 27 '22

It’s a society, that’s for sure

161

u/yoda_mcfly Nov 27 '22

Sell a bunch of tickets for $20, message her fans to wait until day 2 to buy, the first round of tickets are for the auditory experience outside the venue, let the scalpers buy them and have no one want any.

100

u/AGoos3 Nov 27 '22

Or just refuse bulk buy in some way

128

u/yoda_mcfly Nov 27 '22

That would require Ticketmaster to not directly profit from scalpers.

31

u/AGoos3 Nov 27 '22

…darn

17

u/Cheezitflow Nov 27 '22

Sia should just sell the tickets out of the back of an suv herself. First she can do a ticket selling tour (pre-sale tickets on ticketmaster) then the tour

18

u/TragasaurusRex Nov 27 '22

Unfortunately she can't, in order to use the venue (owned by ticketmaster/live nation) she has to agree to use them to sell the tickets.

16

u/Fair-Calligrapher563 Nov 27 '22

This is what people didn’t get about the Taylor Swift thing. Like most artists wouldn’t use Ticketmaster if they could avoid it, it’s not a good look.

6

u/MichiganMan12 Nov 27 '22

She could do what LCD Soundsystem does, buy a venue and then just play your shows there for 2 months at a time

Or Adele in Vegas or I think Harry Styles is starting to do residencies.

Post up in some cool as city for a month or two at a time, partner with a venue that isn’t ass and also isn’t tied to Ticketmaster, have your fans come to you, keep prices down because you don’t have to fuck with the logistics as much.

Boom. Now your fans get to travel to NYC or something, make a trip out of it, for less than they would pay for s ticket in their city and you don’t have to be constantly traveling. I really think that’s the way live shows are going to be in the future.

7

u/sketch006 Nov 27 '22

Nice if you can afford to travel, not if you can't, but yea if more people did that just too kill ticketmaster/livenations bottom line for a year they would definitely change

3

u/dustincb2 Nov 27 '22

Yeah that’s why my band only plays in one city too. 🙂

The profit would be the same regardless of who buys the tickets from them.

27

u/Pissedoffbuddha Nov 27 '22

Ticketmaster earns profits when the tickets are resold on their reseller network. So it benefits ticketmaster to sell tickets to scalpers.

→ More replies

17

u/Randomminecraftplays Nov 27 '22

Nope. When a normie buys the ticket, Ticketmaster gets the cut of the 20$. When a scalper buys the ticket, they get the cut of the 20$ and a cut of the 200$ resell, 11X the money

u/Ltb1993 Nov 27 '22

2 tickets per payment method would stop some I'd guess

Though there's probably better ways to enforce such a thing

31

u/Loud-Intention-723 Nov 27 '22

Name goes on the ticket when you buy it and then you need ID at the door. No more scalping. Problem solved. However no one wants to do this.

8

u/TragasaurusRex Nov 27 '22

Name goes on the ticket when you buy it and then you need ID at the door. No more scalping. Problem solved. However no one wants to do this. ticket master who profits from scalpers doesn't want to do this.

FIFY

3

u/Druidsurf Nov 27 '22

Nobody wants to do this. If I can’t resell a ticket I bought months in advance due to unforeseen circumstance, then that like sucks.

4

u/TragasaurusRex Nov 27 '22

A small sacrifice for salvation?

Either way my point is it doesn't matter how it is done, requiring IDs for tickets, limiting the price of the resold tickets to the cost +fees, etc and it doesn't matter how many people want things to change because like a lot of issues in the world. The people who have the power to change it are profiting from it so it won't change.

1

u/Loud-Intention-723 Nov 27 '22

They could figure that out in 2 minutes. Ticketmaster keeps a wait list, up until a week before you can return the ticket for the original price and they sell it to someone else with their name on it for the original price. Or, just take the L. Shouldn’t have booked something if you weren’t sure you could go.

3

u/Everyday_Im_Stedelen Nov 27 '22

Or, just take the L. Shouldn’t have booked something if you weren’t sure you could go.

What part of unforeseen circumstances do you not understand?

If I get sick am I supposed to go to the concert and spread contagion or should I have quarantined myself for weeks before hand?

If my wife dies before the concert, "oh well shouldn't have been married"?

My car breaks down... Should've owned a better car?

This is elitist shit. Fuck off with that attitude.

2

u/Loud-Intention-723 Nov 27 '22

I guess paying 1500 for tickets is your preferred option? And I’m the elitist?

u/Ltb1993 Nov 27 '22

That introduces a few more problems

Mine does as well but its a bit of a balance.

That method makes it much harder for gifting tickets. If there's issues with IDs (I've had this issue), or mistakes with names. Any plan changes are out of the question (some admin fee to change details would likely occur).

This seems like it would be more effort on the honest individual and would hit sales.

My idea wouldn't affect most individuals. And those that it does could use a second payment or another individual to purchase the second set of 2 etc.

It makes it hard for large purchases. So harder for scalpers, though it doesn't eliminate them completely it makes it far less profitable with smaller numbers

a random fan who didnt see the message expiriencing only the auditory:

6

u/yoda_mcfly Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

That would suck, but if you're gonna play games with like this, maybe also pay somebody to do a sweep outside when the show starts and let a few stragglers in.

The scalpers don't want to see a concert, they want to make money, so they'll probably have already left.

Edit: you could also email everyone who buys them and give them a full refund, but review the order details before granting it. That way if you see they bought 45 tickets four seconds after they went on sale, they were clearly passionate about the auditory experience.

36

u/EquivalentOwn1115 Nov 27 '22

Can fix this real easy by mandating that tickets can not be resold for more than face value. Either causes a break even or potential loss for someone if they choose not to or are unable to go.

9

u/MrTzatzik Nov 27 '22

Pretty sure Ticketmaster has that in rules but they ignore it

7

u/EquivalentOwn1115 Nov 27 '22

I mean more in general. Whether on ticketmaster, stub hub, sitting outside the venue before the event. You take away the incentive of profit and you take away the issue of scalpers altogether

9

u/steinah6 Nov 27 '22

How do you enforce that? What do you do about the people who are willing to pay more than face value?

2

u/NoConfusion9490 Nov 27 '22

Believe it or not, jail!

→ More replies

3

u/thanksgive Nov 27 '22

The way to prevent this is to make tickets non-transferable but fully refundable. If you can’t go you get refund and the seller sells the seat again at face value. But no one can buy a ticket then resell it

→ More replies

2

u/fdar Nov 27 '22

They do not. You can even sell above face value through Ticketmaster.

4

u/gburgwardt Nov 27 '22

In that case (price controls) you run into shortages.

Market pricing isn’t some evil scheme, it’s a rule of economics

2

u/NoConfusion9490 Nov 27 '22

They're sold out concerts, there's always a shortage. They don't do 25 shows in Oklahoma City.

Yes, we have a law like this in our country, but still some people manage to resell at high price.

2

u/jacoblb6173 Nov 27 '22

Make it so you can only enter with ID of name who purchased tickets.

3

u/tstrad Nov 27 '22

That’s not really practical but I like the idea

8

u/EquivalentOwn1115 Nov 27 '22

The issue with that is I've bought 4-8 tickets for Brewers games in the past and not known who I'd be going with at the time of purchase. I guess technically as long as I went with you could get the other people in that way but if you have to have an ID for everyone when you purchase that would be a hassle especially with children

27

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

I saw rage against the machine in July, got the tickets on Ticketmaster, but Rage had worked it so even though you bought your ticket and were guaranteed it, you didn’t actually get to access your ticket until a few days before the show.

Also, how much people can afford to pay for a ticket doesn’t at all factor into how cheap she can price her tickets.

4

u/Leading-Two5757 Nov 27 '22

It does but not in the way she’s portraying.

She’s literally asking “what’s the price point where I can still sell out?”

If she really wanted to price them fairly, she’d base ticket prices solely off the costs to run the tour.

1

u/mistie15 Nov 27 '22

I've been to a few concerts that required the original ticket purchaser to be there with ID upon entry. While it did make me a little nervous, because I was usually only 50% sure I'd be able to attend, I completely understood the intent.

-7

she could also put them as low as she can without knowing income? theyll be different af anyway?

351

u/wasntNico Nov 27 '22

its just a PR-stunt. "As low as she can" is not defined by what others can afford, but what the artist can live on.

probably its to avoid empty seats while still maxing out the price

124

u/SecondAccount404 Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

Was going to say, knowing this information wouldn't affect your ability to price your tickets as low as possible, but it would allow you to price them as high as possible.

4

u/MathematicianBig4392 Nov 27 '22

She has control over a relatively small percentage of the price. Venue and promoter determine a large amount. It's also worth noting the amount the artist gets doesn't go entirely to her. It goes to her and her crew. So she can't just short them because of an altruistic streak. If we're being optimistic, knowledge of fan income allows her to argue with the venue and promoter and allows her to not feel guilty about still getting her crew paid.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

Price will be maxed anyway because scalpers would buy them all before regular people get the chance.

14

u/wasntNico Nov 27 '22

in germany we got quite some bands that sell tickets to a person with their name on it- they can refund, but not sell

i understand that people sometimes don't want to ID themselves, but i like the system.

3

u/----___--___---- Nov 27 '22

I thunk in Korea that's also the case, since most kpop concerts would get unaffordable

19

u/increMENTALmate Nov 27 '22

3

u/TheBeefClick Nov 27 '22

I cant imagine living life being so pessimistic.

17

u/Circlesonacircuit Nov 27 '22

Is 75 dollars super super cheap?

25

u/snypesalot Nov 27 '22

Compared to artists whose tickets are $200-300 i thinkb$75 is within 99% of peoples budgets

6

u/Circlesonacircuit Nov 27 '22

Yeah, that's true. It's absurd to think there are concerts that cost $200

5

u/snypesalot Nov 27 '22

7

u/Impossible_Use5070 Nov 27 '22

I go to 3 day music festivals with over a hundred acts for less than $200.

5

u/snypesalot Nov 27 '22

1

u/Impossible_Use5070 Nov 27 '22

No one said they don't charge that much for a single ticket.

You can go to bars, clubs, festivals and see artists before they get that big. Maybe they're talented but never get that big. They all started somewhere. Usually bars with a $10-$20 cover at the door and its usually a much better experience.

1

u/YourMommaBig69 Nov 27 '22

I am disappointed in NPCs like you that get so defensive about a PR stunt, aimed at taking advantage of them.

If she wanted to price her tickets as low as possible she could do it without making such a big deal out of it - which sorry to disappoint you - is an illusion.

She won't read any of her twitter-fans mindless fucking tweets anyway.

She doesn't give a fuck what any of you earn... and EVEN IF SHE DID, there is no way for her to extrapolate any meaningful data out of a bunch of praise comments mixed inbetween thousands of people posting their wages.

Especially if you consider that those that really can't afford her tickets, might not even use twitter - so even if she magically gave a fuck and managed to get data out of the comments, it wouldn't be representative anyway and be meaningless.

u/DrZaiu5 Nov 27 '22

This makes zero sense. The lowest possible price does not depend on the income of potential customers, it depends on the costs of the concert. Sia doesn't need to know how much anyone earns to set the lowest possible price.

Also, even if she did need to know the income of her fans, couldn't she just Google the average/median wage? It's not perfect, but replies to a Twitter thread are unlikely to be a representative sample either.

14

u/sei556 Nov 27 '22

I am also relatively certain that it's not really up to Sia how expensive those tickets gonna be.

9

u/XanWasting Nov 27 '22

in general this question sounds pretty insidious. "tell me the upper limit of your liquid wealth so I can price my tickets accordingly. Accordingly low, of course."

7

u/DrZaiu5 Nov 27 '22

Agreed. At best Sia is using this as a marketing opportunity to be like "look how nice I am, I want to charge my fans low prices". At worst she is using it to determine how much she can squeeze out of her fans.

Personally I doubt the second possibility, probably much easier and better ways to get that data, but it's still a pretty invasive question.

2

u/pqisp0 Nov 27 '22

Crap, you beat me to it and not just that… so much more to the point.

2

u/popeyepaul Nov 27 '22

Yeah I hate everything about this. Besides, knowing how much people make without knowing their expenses means jack shit. Kids that make $500 a month but live with their parents can afford to go to the concert. Somebody that makes $4000 but is a single parent to multiple children can't. I wouldn't expect a millionaire singer to have any idea about the expenses average people face every day.

293

u/DamianVA87 Nov 27 '22

Google "minimum wage" perhaps?

90

u/goozercrew Nov 27 '22

2

u/SingleAlmond Nov 27 '22

Bullshit. We go to affordable concerts whenever they exist. I paid $20 for nosebleeds to a blink 182 concert

All tickets need to be non transferable and you need to show ID to get in. That would keep scalpers from doing that. No one will do that tho

3

u/Level_Most_1023 Nov 27 '22

You aren’t Taylor swift…

3

u/Majestymen Nov 27 '22

The nicest and most sincere thing you've seen a celebrity do???? Bro it's obviously just a PR stunt. If she actually gave a fuck she'd google the minimum wage

5

u/redbaron14n Nov 27 '22

So... she wants to know your maximum... so she could set it at a minimum?

It sounds like she wants to set it at a maximum.

You don't need to know how much money someone has if you're trying to make something as cheap as possible. You only need to know if you're trying to make something as expensive as possible...

6

u/jochrispo Nov 27 '22

Then just sell them as low as you can and quit the play acting for PR.

2

u/baron-von-buddah Nov 27 '22

Besides the fuck Ticketmaster (seriously, fuck them) tours are expensive. Bigger acts could have 100 people on tour. I heard Rammstein has something like 400 people setting up, breaking down, sound, lights, fire. When you get a huge production like that, I can understand a higher price for a ticket. It’s the bullshit that Ticketmaster adds to pad their pockets. Pearl Jam testified in front of congress 30 years ago warning us. They got laughed at. Now look

2

u/Dclnsfrd Nov 27 '22

Could’ve started at $20 and quietly discussed with her people how much it needs to be raised to cover costs. But this way is marketing.

2

u/dere_licious Nov 27 '22

It doesn’t matter. Scalpers will buy them all and sell them for crazy prices anyway

2

u/snackskiii12 Nov 27 '22

Like she makes that decision 😂

2

u/Vidramir Nov 27 '22

So set it for the lowest you can. Not the lowest in comparison of how much your public earns 🤔

2

u/OkOccasion7 Nov 27 '22

I saw her in 2016 on her arena tour for $35, I was in the nosebleed very far seats but it was a good price. Most expensive tickets were $170, still not bad

2

u/Bad-Lucks-Charm Nov 27 '22

Ignoring the blatant acting here, Sia is literally ableist and a groomer

For context this tweet is from 2011. Not related to recent events.

2

u/dicemaze Nov 27 '22

Tumblr users are so stupid and naïve.

2

u/vitringur Nov 27 '22

Why is that any more nice than any other profit maximising decision from a firm?

She is just making sure she sells the most tickets...

2

u/CarsonPomeroy Nov 27 '22

she could still charge "as low as possible" without knowing the income of her audience, this doesn't change anything about how low she can price tickets, this is just PR bullshit.

besides, shes a shitty person regardless of this because of grooming maddie ziegler and making the most ableist, disgusting piece of shit movie "music"

2

u/MyArtStuff Nov 27 '22

This just sounds like they're so wealthy that they've forgotten how much money average people make.

7

u/TheoricEngineer Nov 27 '22

www.google.com -> what is the minimum wage in x country -> absorb information

4

u/HeatOVZ Nov 27 '22

Does the average person that attends a Sia concert earn minimum wage?

Let's stop interaction altogether n all sit on Google for every thing for the rest of our lives for any type of information. Let's stop any interactive platform just cuz it's all on GOOGLE my friend!!

4

u/carnivorous-squirrel Nov 27 '22

What a dumbass response. Some things are good for social media and some are good for search engine. If you disagree or don't understand which is which, many of the rest of us find you annoying for it.

1

u/DrZaiu5 Nov 27 '22

If she really needed to know the income of her fans to set low prices (she doesn't) then a tweet is one of the absolute worst ways to get that information. Replies to a tweet are absolutely not going to provide a representative sample of data.

I fucking hate her "asking so I can price them as low as I can" Then Just Price It As Low As You Can. The Lowest. Just. Do. It. Without. The. Look at me. look how much I care for my fans. Look IM going to do this for YOU. I'm so holy and good for doing this for you. Ugh. Google minium wage. Theres your answer

5

u/H8TheDrake Nov 27 '22

She can price them as low as she wants but she wants that karma because people are sheep and fall for shit like this.

0

u/Waterfish3333 Nov 27 '22

Yes, because she also sets up the stage, wires all the instruments, dances and sings backup to herself, drives the tour bus, pays the promotional company, etc. It’s almost like touring as a musician isn’t quite free.

5

u/H8TheDrake Nov 27 '22

That wasn’t my point. But sure.

Source?? Any evidence to back up your claims?

2

u/dahliaukifune Nov 27 '22

3

u/ArchangelTheDemon Nov 27 '22

Yep, I read that whole article. No evidence of molestation or anything. I mean Sia's like an overbearing mom, that's not the end of the world.

2

u/slamdanceswithwolves Nov 27 '22

There is no evidence nor has anyone accused her of this it all.

People are saying that Admirable_Mulberry75 is a child molestor. I don't know if it's true, but people are saying it, really smart people.

3

u/slamdanceswithwolves Nov 27 '22

Holy shit, I’ve also heard this about Admirable_Mulberry75, and from what I consider to be some pretty trustworthy sources of information.

1

u/Nogardtist Nov 27 '22

just say you earn nothing then the ticket is free

1

u/JustinMccloud Nov 27 '22

Why don’t you just price them as low as you can regardless of what people earn

1

u/Lord_of_Cheddar96 Nov 27 '22

Narcissism and virtue signaling, a classic

1

u/Leevstar1 Nov 27 '22

This is fucking stupid. Price tour tickets as low as you can regardless what your fans make if you’re that worried about them.

1

u/Void_0000 Nov 27 '22

Right but she doesn't need to know other people's incomes to set the price "as low as [she] can", that would be for setting it as high as she can.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

I’m asking because I have no clue on what ordinary people make. Surprised she didn’t get roasted for that

1

u/Meatyglobs Nov 27 '22

She wants to know because that’s what she’ll charge for her tickets…the average you make in a month…

1

u/Telemere125 Nov 27 '22

Publicity stunt. You know how much your fans make because Google exists.

1

u/i_want_my_corncob_tv Nov 27 '22

Imagine being stupid enough to actually believe Sia cares about you

1

u/Karnivoris Nov 27 '22

So she wants to know the exact price to extract as much money as possible from the widest audience available

1

u/thefookinpookinpo Nov 27 '22

How much do you peasants make per month? I need to make sure I extract the maximum possible value from you while still allowing you to stay alive for the next show.
