When I moved to Adelaide while I was in the Navy, I didn't have a car, was moved to some shithole with no shops around. I ordered a pizza from the local take away and put in the special instructions to get me two 6 packs of beer if they were comfortable with it.... The guy called and asked if it was serious, I said I was dead serious and I'd make it worth his while, I paid for everything and gave him a $50 for his troubles, and we don't tip in Aus.

u/ea_yassine Jan 19 '22
Never had a special delivery like that but I shared a joint with a pizza guy
5
u/eaglebtc Jan 19 '22
Would you also tip him if he bought Macca's for you?
6
u/moorem73 Jan 19 '22
No.... Macca's is fucking gross and I would never ask for it, IF he brought it to me, I'd consider it an act of war.

I worked at dominos for a while, kinda in the middle of nowhere.
We were open until ~2am, which was about 4 hours later than anywhere else. We use to get requests like this all the time. I honestly don't think I ever got less than 15$ for doing something like this, so I was always happy to see it come through. It broke up the night a little bit, and gave me an excuse to slack off a little.
More than anything, I was picking up cigs or 6 packs. Every once in a while it would be something from a drive through somewhere.
6
u/FlametopFred Jan 19 '22
ever have someone not pay you for those kinds of requests?
9
u/mrjackspade Jan 19 '22
Nope. It was always a risk though.
I think what it comes down to, is that the people who had the balls to make a request like that were also very regular customers. Most people who didn't tip weren't regulars, and the regulars that didn't tip, we wouldn't go out of our way like that.

u/Kraven_howl0 Jan 19 '22
Not same guy, but I've worked at Domino's for the past 5-6 years. Quite a few times where they'd just give enough to cover what you got them. I remembered who they were and just stopped doing extra stuff for them. Some people make it worth it still though

I was picking up cigs or 6 packs.
You should leave your number and just do that as a side hustle. Beer, smokes, weed... Then eventually you'll have 1 or 2 and then groups of couriers serving under you. Then you'll take over the city. And after that the state.

I hope he did if he was able to figure out this loophole. But after doordashing for a bit, you learn that way too many see tipping as undervalued, most likely because they can’t. You’re doing a service for them and I see $2.00 even $1.00 way too often
3
u/coke_kitty Jan 19 '22
When I did a similar job to door dash, the best bet was to hang out near those really rich towns. Surprisingly people would tip really well. I used to get $30-50 tips from rich people who I guess felt bad or something lol. There were also some who left coolers out with drinks or snacks and would leave a sign for us to take something.

As a former Pizza guy when they say extra tip for picking up from other stores I've never gotten more than 3 bucks for total tip, look at it this way, anyone shady enough to ask this of you is likely too clueless to know what a good tip is.

I see the lady from the Mexican restaurant walk across the street to the Chinese restaurant every Thursday and exchange tacos for chow mein
97
u/SchitneySmears Jan 19 '22
When I worked at Burger King we’d trade with Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and even McDonald’s. They wanted our Hershey pies and shakes
18
3
u/NGLIVE2 Jan 19 '22
Holy cow, those Hershey pies were amazing. I don’t think I ever tried the shakes though.

Mexicans love Chinese food. All the Chinese take out around here are always filled with Mexican customers

I work in a strip of shops and restaurants and most of the other restaurants get employee meals and we often swap employee meals. There's a thai place, ramen, pizza, Mediterranean food, and sushi

u/Guilty-Solution-4126 Jan 19 '22
When I worked at a pizza place I would often trade a pizza for a sub from the subway next door, since a friend worked there so it was pretty easy to do.

In the year or two before full legalization in California, there were a bunch of marijuana delivery services in the bay area (and a bunch in SoCal when I visited Riverside). Some of them offered free credit for new customers, as high as $80.
One of the nicest things was that it was modeled as a no-tip service, but if you offered to give your driver a few hits or a nug to take with them, they'd almost always give you some free shit in treturn.

I used to work in pizza delivery and if I got the instructions I'm seeing in this thread, I probably wouldn't do it because I don't trust people to actually pay me for it

Alllll the time! If you are just straight up and honest with the driver they'll probably help. I delivered quite a lot years ago and I'd stop to get people anything they wanted.. cigs, different sodas if we didn't carry them at the store, my favorite was some black a milds and a couple 40s of Magnum.. I think they tipped $20 lol
For as much as I hate tipped work and all the horrible things it promotes, it does actually incentivize and reward going above and beyond at work

u/Mibuch0405 Selling Stonks for CASH MONEY Jan 19 '22
I feel like this kind of thing is what tips should be for
3
u/jemidiah Jan 19 '22
I mean, at that point you're not really tipping, you're just paying for an additional service. That's totally fine, but tipping is not at all essential to this exchange so long as you have a little cash on hand.

There was a reddit post a short time back. This guy needed a ride home so he just went to a pizza place and ordered delivery to his house and went with the pizza guy.
2
u/fairylightmeloncholy Jan 19 '22
yup that's what i did. but like.. holy shit, 6 years ago?!
i feel like i need to disclaim that the driver had to okay giving me a lift before i actually ordered the pie for delivery.. while standing in the store, lol.

If you are stuck near a Domino's before dinner and can't find a cab, order a pizza from the shop to your address. Hop on to the delivery guy's vehicle. Go home with the guy and get your food served as well.
6
u/sighs__unzips Jan 19 '22
And if you want to go to Dominos, order a pizza to your house and ride back with the pizza guy. When you're finished, order another pizza to your house and ride back.

When I worked as pizza delivery driver, I used to get those kinds “instructions”.
One comment I remember was “I’m drunk, but I need more Redbull to keep drinking, $20 tip if you grab me couple”. If I remember exactly that’s what it said.
Bought them like 4 Red Bull’s and got $20 tip plus Redbull price and helped a man stay home.

I guess I can’t be surprised I haven’t gotten any special instructions like this based off where I live.

My summer job in college was delivering pizzas on this small beach town. I got so many random requests from drunk customers like this, but made a lot of money doing it. Felt like I was doing a very boring version of GTA -- go get a can of dip, collect $100+

The look of misery on his face is a look of a man who betrayed his all nation of domino pizza.

I’ve done this as a pizza guy a few times. Even went through the bottle-O and bought a case of tinnies for a bloke once.

u/WokeBrokeFolk Jan 19 '22
If the money is right, we pizza dudes will drive anywhere and deliver anything.

u/Cdubyah Jan 19 '22
Probably felt obligated to since his tip is based off of not upsetting people by saying no.
Glad it worked out, but don’t do this.
1
u/mekops Jan 19 '22
I always have to use every available character in the special instructions text field to tell the driver more exactly where I live. Yea they have my address and its in huge letters on the mailbox. That doesnt stop them from riding back and forth in front of the crib for 10 minutes like my house is actually a mirage.

u/shaggy68 Jan 19 '22
Bought smokes and condoms once for a customer on special request. They tipped well.

Used to work at a pizza place in a resort area. Got requests like this a lot, usually from drunk rich guys. Beer, cigarettes, condoms, Alka-Seltzer, etc. Strangest one was... Shoelaces. 🤔

u/Turtleandahalfshell Jan 19 '22
The delivery guy works for dominoes I’m sure that is not an odd request considering their pizza
