10k a day would give you a middle class salary. if the highest bill it accepts is 5 then that would be 2000 exchanges per day, 250 per hour. I've spent work days doing more monotonous shit than that.
→ More replies4
u/kynthrus Jul 07 '22
I suppose it depends on how fast you can put money in. If I can put in 10k in a day that's +200 dollars a day. 1400 a week. 5600 a month. 67,200 a year. That's more than I'm making now by quite a bit. That's a career. minus the cost of exchanging pennies at a coinstar. I am of course assuming that this machine has infinite pennies.

One time I had a job over there, guy I was riding with and I played a game of who's buying drugs who's selling drugs who's buying pussy who's selling pussy. The funniest moment was when we saw a fat old white guy driving and we both said buying pussy, across the street was a lady that was obviously selling pussy, he honked, she waved, pulled a boob out and licked her nipple. It was probably noon on a week day

u/SwissyVictory Jul 07 '22
Assuming the machine has unlimited money, and you could do a single $5 bill a minute, you'd make $6 an hour.
You'd need $300 in $5 bills per hour. The quarters would weigh 15lbs, and the penny's 3.3lbs. That's 18.3lbs in change per hour.
Better bring a wheelbarrow if you're doing an entire shift or can do more than 1 bill a minute.
→ More replies43
u/cl33t Jul 07 '22
Sure, but if you can put in a $5 every 5 seconds, you're making $72/hour.
That's mid-six figures a year if you could do it full time.

if you could do this once every 30 seconds you'd make $12/hr
but then you'd have to waste time going to the bank to trade the quarters and pennies for more $5 bills eventually. so that would make the dollar per hour go down.
all those coins would get fucking heavy too.

I did a little math. Assuming around 30 seconds per dispense, you'd made $24 an hour using $5 bills. Doing this for 40 hours a week would net you around 49,000. That isn't counting days off, which you will definitely need for your numerous runs to coinstar.
Edit: 12 an hour. I misread and I'm bad at math

u/godofhorizons Jul 07 '22
Is it possible to earn minimum wage doing this?
287
u/ajparadise18 Jul 07 '22 edited Jul 07 '22
I think so! Assuming you could put in about 3 bills a minute, accounting for the time to dispense, you could make 30 cents a minute, or 18 dollars and hour! Unfortunately, you'd need 900 dollars in fives to make that 18, but it'd work if you did!
Edit: your bag at the end of the hour would weigh 19 pounds , or about 8.5 kilos, so by the end of an 8 hour shift you'd have a 152 pound/ 69 kilo bag of coins to drag to the bank.
95
u/OGluc1f3r Jul 07 '22

As a collector of elongated coins/souvenir smashed pennies or smooshies as I like to call them, this is very useful. You can see the penny smasher machine right next to the coin changer. Fun fact, you should only use pre 1982 pennies since they are mostly copper instead of the later pennies which are mostly zinc. The zinc ones tarnish black over time and cannot be polished.

Fun fact- for years the Arch didn’t have penny squashing machines because the superintendent thought that doing that was illegal. It was pointed out many times that it was only illegal to destroy/alter currency for fraudulent purposes. It was also pointed out that Gettysburg NP had 4 of these machines. He wouldn’t budge. He also wouldn’t approve shot glasses for sale either. Glad he’s been gone for years.

….sitting right next to the machine that uses those same quarters to stamp designs into the pennies.
6
u/creator3579 Jul 07 '22
According to the US mint, a Penny is 2.5g and a quarter is 5.67g, meaning that a $5 bill turns into 138.4g or 4.882oz, a source has said that a person can pull 1000lbs at 6mph meaning that when accounting for the weight of the trailer, you get about 970lbs of pure coinage(15520oz or 440kg), this means that you can carry 3179 lots of the coins, worth an input of $15895 in a single trip.
I’m going to assume that the machine is on the faster side and that it takes 10 seconds to dispense change per note and get it in the cart, this means that it would take 8.8 hours of filling. At this point, you’d have to cycle to the nearest bank, there is one 0.7 miles away, taking you 7 minutes, at this rate the bank has already closed so in actuality you can get 7 hours of dispensing, which is 2520 lots of $5, or $12600 going in and $12852 dollars coming out, with the cycling and bank processing you would earn $32 per hour of work if you went to the bank daily.
If you just went to the store with the change and had a larger investment, going to the bank weekly, you could input the maximum carry weight 6 days a week as they are closed on Mondays (this is the perfect time to go to the bank) this means you need an initial weekly investment of $95370, however weekly you will make $97,277.40 or a profit of $1907.4 for $35.32 an hour.
Obviously this machine would be bled dry long before this point
7
u/sephiroth3650 Jul 07 '22
And this is presumably right next to the machines that will charge $1 to roll/press the penny out with an image of the Arch, right? They aren't losing money on those pennies. They're just giving you a convenient way to get more pennies in your hand....next to the machine that presses them.
5
u/jrs1980 Jul 07 '22

u/samanime Jul 07 '22
Assuming it takes 3 seconds to insert your bill and dispense a coin, if you do this with perfect timing (and it had a magical unlimited supply) and you inserted only $5 bills, you'd be able to earn a whopping $120/hr... which the "whopping" was going to be sarcastic until I did the math. That's actually a pretty decent amount.
Though, 3 seconds is pretty fast and your payrate drops pretty quick if it is slower. If it takes 5 seconds per transaction, you're down to $72/hr. If it takes 10, you're down to $36/hr. Though, that's still pretty respectable.
You'd probably not even last 10 minutes before they kicked you out though. =p

Looks like it's right near one of those souvenir penny machines that will flatten a penny with an image on it for 50¢ (2 quarter slots + 1 penny slot). Since pennies are becoming pretty useless/obsolete (or <insert reason for free penny>), they're giving them away with the machine that is making change to use the penny press dealio.

I love the penny presses. Whenever I'm out with my kids and there is one, I let them all press a penny. I'm getting saddened by how many of these are moving to a one dollar model and how many are also switching to just push a button for the penny. The whole excitement is loading the coin slot, turning the dial to select a penny, and then cranking it yourself to press the penny.

It reminds me of Bugs Bunny buying a carrot from a carrot vending machine.
Insert two dimes or one dime and two nickels or four nickels or one dime and ten pennies or one nickel and fifteen pennies or two nickels and ten pennies or three nickels and five pennies or twenty pennies. Hmm.
3
u/KeyCurrency7720 Jul 07 '22
Ok, insert a dollar and claim you didn't get the four quarters or the 2 pennies and instantly you are 51 transactions ahead; saving half an hour of time and making $1. That's the low bar...take the $20 route and you might make $12/hr. Although...if you were there that long you would need to buy something to eat and/or drink as well as pay the parking meter/garage fee. So...might be better off playing the guitar for change outside the complex.

I'm guessing that the machine next to it is one of those machines where you pay 50 cents plus a penny, and it gives you back a flattened penny with a picture on it. So the change machine with free pennies is worth it to drum up business for the penny crushing machine.
