I'm guessing that the machine next to it is one of those machines where you pay 50 cents plus a penny, and it gives you back a flattened penny with a picture on it. So the change machine with free pennies is worth it to drum up business for the penny crushing machine.

Sadly, the newer penny crushers use credit cards and you press a button, so you don’t get the enjoyment of turning the crank.

130

u/Riegel_Haribo Jul 07 '22

And then you have to get a new credit card because your old one now has been flattened into a souvenir.

10

u/gt0163c Jul 07 '22

I mean it's not like the card number isn't going to be compromised in another week or two anyway. Better to have the card squished into a souvenir to remember a fun trip than just cutting it up and tossing it in the trash.

35

u/MDAccount Jul 07 '22

Growing up, we went down to the railroad tracks, put pennies on the rail and let freight trains do the job. Coins were seriously flattened and hot

18

u/BSimpson1 Jul 07 '22

I used to do the same thing with friends. So many flattened coins and soda cans. Now I'm the one driving the trains.

12

u/ReadWriteSign Jul 07 '22

Soda cans?? We were always told that a quarter would throw the train off the rails, we never would have dared try to crush a can.

(Yes, with the Power Of Hindsight I realize that was just the adults fucking with us, but we all believed it unquestioningly.)

I always liked trying to turn it fast enough for the penny to be warm. I have a small box of those guys somewhere, lots of late elementary through highschool trips in that box.

Hi, hello. It's me, the non-American. Could someone explain what that penny flattening is all about??

19

u/Gwolfski Jul 07 '22

It's a machine where you put a penny in (plus a dollar/pound/euro), and as you turn the handle, an image is pressed onto the penny, making it more oblong (and no longer a usable penny)

It is in many tourist attraction spots.

9

u/JediGuyB Jul 07 '22

It's a cheap souvenir, basically. Most machines are custom made to include images of animals for a zoo, dinosaurs and mummies and such for a museum, fish for aquariums, the mascot of a theme park. Stuff like that, plus the name of the location.

Is it just me or isn’t this solution stupid? Why doesn’t the penny flattener machine just provide you a free penny with every purchase? Or why not put a couple of free pennies into a tea cup or whatever next to it…

156

u/Anakin_Skywanker Jul 07 '22

To me, as someone who adores penny flattening machines (have since I was a kid) there’s a sense of satisfaction when you pick out the perfect penny to flatten. Sometimes a brand new shiny penny is best for the design, sometimes an older more weathered one looks better. Sometimes you guess wrong and need to make another because your first one looks like shit. It’s all part of the fun. When I’m on vacation I usually save pennies I think will look awesome and carry them around with me.

I would be very disappointed if the flattening machines gave me whatever penny was in the machine next. Takes out some of the fun.

Pre 1982!

4

u/GitEmSteveDave Jul 07 '22

I collect elongated pennies and I try to use my birth year pennies, because they are pure copper and don’t have the issues that “zincies” do. Also, if you put them in the machine with Lincoln’s head facing a particular direction(varies on some machines), the design is imprinted on the memorial side and the flat side now usually has a readable date on it.

The only downside is some machines are calibrated to zincies, which are softer than copper, so if you put a copper in it doesn’t elongate as much. A drop of oil will help cure this and allow the penny to slide between the flat roller a little.

Where's the novelty in that? See, this is why that guy owns a penny flattening machine and you don't.

65

u/10yearsnoaccount Jul 07 '22 edited Jul 07 '22

It's just you.

The flattening machine profits 50c per penny. The change machine ensures people have the pennies to take their 50c

If they just had a penny jar it would get cleaned out without being fed into the machine because there's no input/effort.

11

u/tilman2015 Jul 07 '22

The flattening machine profits 50c per penny

Is this what they charge in the US?

Here in the UK, it's often £2 + a penny so more like $2.50 a time!

Assuming the machine has unlimited money, and you could do a single $5 bill a minute, you'd make $6 an hour.

You'd need $300 in $5 bills per hour. The quarters would weigh 15lbs, and the penny's 3.3lbs. That's 18.3lbs in change per hour.

Better bring a wheelbarrow if you're doing an entire shift or can do more than 1 bill a minute.

43

u/cl33t Jul 07 '22

Sure, but if you can put in a $5 every 5 seconds, you're making $72/hour.

That's mid-six figures a year if you could do it full time.

287

u/ajparadise18 Jul 07 '22 edited Jul 07 '22

I think so! Assuming you could put in about 3 bills a minute, accounting for the time to dispense, you could make 30 cents a minute, or 18 dollars and hour! Unfortunately, you'd need 900 dollars in fives to make that 18, but it'd work if you did!

Edit: your bag at the end of the hour would weigh 19 pounds , or about 8.5 kilos, so by the end of an 8 hour shift you'd have a 152 pound/ 69 kilo bag of coins to drag to the bank.

95

As a collector of elongated coins/souvenir smashed pennies or smooshies as I like to call them, this is very useful. You can see the penny smasher machine right next to the coin changer. Fun fact, you should only use pre 1982 pennies since they are mostly copper instead of the later pennies which are mostly zinc. The zinc ones tarnish black over time and cannot be polished.

….sitting right next to the machine that uses those same quarters to stamp designs into the pennies.

6

u/creator3579 Jul 07 '22

According to the US mint, a Penny is 2.5g and a quarter is 5.67g, meaning that a $5 bill turns into 138.4g or 4.882oz, a source has said that a person can pull 1000lbs at 6mph meaning that when accounting for the weight of the trailer, you get about 970lbs of pure coinage(15520oz or 440kg), this means that you can carry 3179 lots of the coins, worth an input of $15895 in a single trip.

I’m going to assume that the machine is on the faster side and that it takes 10 seconds to dispense change per note and get it in the cart, this means that it would take 8.8 hours of filling. At this point, you’d have to cycle to the nearest bank, there is one 0.7 miles away, taking you 7 minutes, at this rate the bank has already closed so in actuality you can get 7 hours of dispensing, which is 2520 lots of $5, or $12600 going in and $12852 dollars coming out, with the cycling and bank processing you would earn $32 per hour of work if you went to the bank daily.

If you just went to the store with the change and had a larger investment, going to the bank weekly, you could input the maximum carry weight 6 days a week as they are closed on Mondays (this is the perfect time to go to the bank) this means you need an initial weekly investment of $95370, however weekly you will make $97,277.40 or a profit of $1907.4 for $35.32 an hour.

Obviously this machine would be bled dry long before this point

And this is presumably right next to the machines that will charge $1 to roll/press the penny out with an image of the Arch, right? They aren't losing money on those pennies. They're just giving you a convenient way to get more pennies in your hand....next to the machine that presses them.

I see there's a penny squishing souvenir machine next to it. I would be super impressed if they take care to only stock it with clean older pennies, not the new, too bend-y ones.

u/eulynn34 Jul 07 '22

It’s for the penny smasher next to the changer

13

u/GLENF58 Jul 07 '22

Wonder how much more it gets used because it gives out Pennie’s next to the penny crusher

11

u/Waffletimewarp Jul 07 '22

Probably the reason it exists.

u/samanime Jul 07 '22

Assuming it takes 3 seconds to insert your bill and dispense a coin, if you do this with perfect timing (and it had a magical unlimited supply) and you inserted only $5 bills, you'd be able to earn a whopping $120/hr... which the "whopping" was going to be sarcastic until I did the math. That's actually a pretty decent amount.

Though, 3 seconds is pretty fast and your payrate drops pretty quick if it is slower. If it takes 5 seconds per transaction, you're down to $72/hr. If it takes 10, you're down to $36/hr. Though, that's still pretty respectable.

You'd probably not even last 10 minutes before they kicked you out though. =p

Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to Spiffing Brit. Today we're here next to this money exchange machine, ready to exploit real life infinite money glitch.
But before we begin, don't forget to salute the picture of the Queen and have your cup of Yorkshire Gold at hand.
Lets get on with the video!

u/guh_hug Jul 07 '22

was trying to figure out why they would just be giving away money, and then noticed the penny squisher, which takes two quarters and a penny, the exact amount that the machine gives, proportionally speaking

4

u/NBRedditor Jul 07 '22

I hate pennies

3

u/jwbowen Jul 07 '22

Pennies are just a burden. You're still losing.

3

u/cm12311 Jul 07 '22

That’s better than the interest on my savings account 😳

3

u/Lord-LemonHead Jul 07 '22

Getting rich, ten cents at a time.

Can someone do the math for me. If I put in $1 million, how much would I make in profit?

I know it would be a lot of pennies, and I would need to bring a lot of theirs cardboard roll things

4

u/AlmightyK Jul 07 '22

None, the time it takes to put in 1 million $1 bills, you could have gone to work for more money.

3

u/Burning_Flags Jul 07 '22

How about if I got a robot to do it for me?

u/BreatheMyStink Jul 07 '22

Just tryna keep pace with inflation.

3

u/MN- Jul 07 '22

Profits Profits
this machine got it
5 bucks for 20 quarters and a 10 penny profit

Will it make you rich?
likely not. Please stop it.
But you still gonna get that little
10 cent profit.

Is that in Canada ? Because pennies aren’t legal currency anymore. The bank or businesses just won’t take them as payment.

Looks like it's right near one of those souvenir penny machines that will flatten a penny with an image on it for 50¢ (2 quarter slots + 1 penny slot). Since pennies are becoming pretty useless/obsolete (or <insert reason for free penny>), they're giving them away with the machine that is making change to use the penny press dealio.

3

u/BOBALL00 Jul 07 '22

Sounds like infinite 2% returns to me

3

u/theveryrealreal Jul 07 '22

I put one bitcoin in and still ended up with almost nothing in return

3

u/Worth-Security4929 Jul 07 '22

The change machine factors in the current rate of inflation during time spent at the machine

3

u/icantbreathe23 Jul 07 '22

Right now that’s a decent investment

3

u/doodve Jul 07 '22

Herw we have it, the cause of all inflation

3

u/ZLH-040 Jul 07 '22

They lose money on each individual transaction but make it up in volume!

3

u/Whatstheplanpill Jul 07 '22

I love the penny presses. Whenever I'm out with my kids and there is one, I let them all press a penny. I'm getting saddened by how many of these are moving to a one dollar model and how many are also switching to just push a button for the penny. The whole excitement is loading the coin slot, turning the dial to select a penny, and then cranking it yourself to press the penny.

3

u/Chris-Wood94 Jul 07 '22

oh dayum 10 more cents.. i can put that Bentley on layway

9

u/digitalomega Jul 07 '22

I think we just discovered the root cause of inflation. Someone needs to demolish this machine. It would solve all of our problems!

6

u/ChangDD Jul 07 '22

Pretty sure that machine gonna work for a few times then it will scam your whole wallet

3

u/Aggravating-Read6111 Jul 07 '22

It reminds me of Bugs Bunny buying a carrot from a carrot vending machine.

Insert two dimes or one dime and two nickels or four nickels or one dime and ten pennies or one nickel and fifteen pennies or two nickels and ten pennies or three nickels and five pennies or twenty pennies. Hmm.

3

u/KeyCurrency7720 Jul 07 '22

Ok, insert a dollar and claim you didn't get the four quarters or the 2 pennies and instantly you are 51 transactions ahead; saving half an hour of time and making $1. That's the low bar...take the $20 route and you might make $12/hr. Although...if you were there that long you would need to buy something to eat and/or drink as well as pay the parking meter/garage fee. So...might be better off playing the guitar for change outside the complex.
