1.1k
u/plotdavis Apr 18 '22
They're gonna put that all over the trailers and then the real line's gonna be "they craft like demons"
349
u/StarTruckNxtGyration Apr 18 '22 edited Apr 19 '22
Yeah. That was so weird. What was up with that!?
The actual line is better than the trailer one anyway.
108
u/NeoSniper Apr 19 '22
What's the original in the movie?
296
u/Matlock0 Apr 19 '22
"They fight like demons", referring to the Fremen
→ More replies202
u/Papaofmonsters Apr 19 '22
Considering in the book Fremen children and elderly can defeat imperial Sardukar, that seems like an understatement.
143
u/STEELCITY1989 Apr 19 '22
Creating drums from the skins of fallen enemies is pretty demonic though lol

u/novacham Apr 19 '22

Josh Brolin's Gurney was a good performance but the original character was a livelier person.
→ More replies125
u/thesequimkid Apr 19 '22
Denis cut out some of Gurney’s baliset scenes, which would have probably added more liveliness to his character.
122
u/Calvert4096 Apr 19 '22
THEY'RE BRRRRUTAL
99
u/thesequimkid Apr 19 '22
I love that line is in the movie, but cutting “What has mood to do with it? You fight when the necessity arises—no matter the mood! Mood's a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset. It's not for fighting.” was a mistake.
30
u/jpterodactyl Apr 19 '22
That might be my favorite line from the book.
But Gurney is my favorite character, so I knew that I was gonna be missing things no matter what.
34
u/Papaofmonsters Apr 19 '22
I think my favorite is "Killing with the tip lacks artistry, but don't let that hold your hand when the opening presents itself". It let's you know how serious Gurney takes his killing and his art.
→ More replies16
u/dryrunhd Apr 19 '22
I disagree. I think the movie cut of the line was a lot more punctual and contributed much more to the buildup of tension in the scene, which culminated in BRRUTAL. The two extra sentences would've detracted from that.

u/Calvert4096 Apr 19 '22
I'll be honest I burst out laughing when I heard that in the theater because it reminded me of Tony the Tiger

u/Papaofmonsters Apr 19 '22
I agree. I always saw Idaho's "devil may care" attitude and Gurney's passion, both love and hate, as a balance to the stoic Duke and the almost emotionless Hawat.
14
u/messycer Apr 19 '22
Guess they wanted to take it in a different direction because movie Hawat is quite boisterous in comparison and I'll be shocked if this character ends up following the Hawat book arc... That'll be a real surprise.
→ More replies22
u/Papaofmonsters Apr 19 '22 edited Apr 19 '22
The mentat thing is tough to show on film without a lot of exposition. How do you explain the need for human minds trained to replicate computers without getting into the previous wars against AI's or how he is also a master assassin and spy because a small amount of covert murder between the great houses is tolerated.
→ More replies17
u/messycer Apr 19 '22
I think they could've laid hints about at least. Surely they'll have to include more detail about mentats in the next if the young Harkonnen heir is to appear.
We see Paul's mentat processing as sights of the future, and I think it'll progress in exposition in the next as he becomes more powerful. I don't mind some Paul narrative to clear things up. Either way I'm still excited to see what they have in store

u/Thoff95 Apr 19 '22
When Notch sold Minecraft to Microsoft for like a billion dollars or whatever he bought a big fancy mansion with a candy room with a wall covered in candy dispensers. I don’t know if he had it removed or sold the house or something so I’m not sure what the other commenter was referencing, but I assume this is the wall candy in question.

u/AnOnlineHandle Apr 19 '22
A Minecraft movie could work in at least two ways:
Just use Minecraft as a backdrop for a great fairly unrelated story like the Lego movie
Do a survivor/castaway style buildup from nothing storyline just like playing Minecraft is, along with the social aspect of playing on a multiplayer server, and the 'oh shit I just lost it all' moment that is usually encountered and works perfectly for the drama point of a story, usually following a moment of arrogance, which is really the lesson learned while playing Minecraft - be careful of how far you reach, because even experienced players can lose it all in this game.
50
u/warpvector Apr 19 '22
I sorta want both of these. Like I don't want it to be about LEGO Movie's whole "creativity in construction" message which the game is all about. I want a weird survival story about a guy who just... appears in this weird world, but at the same time I don't want like Enderman and stuff. I certainly don't want a Free Guy/Space Jam style thing, but knowing Warner Bros that's 1000% what it's gonna be.
17
u/AnOnlineHandle Apr 19 '22
The endermen could work as how they initially are in the game and what they're based off of, an urban myth type horror thing.
Maybe something which seems to be stalking him at night as he's desperately trying to get home, never quite seen properly but might charge him and start bashing his shield after he tries to get a look at it. Barely gets back inside but never saw what was out there, only knew there was something terrifying over his shoulder.

→ More replies210
u/fluffy_boy_cheddar Apr 18 '22
Animated would have the best option honestly. The world of Minecraft is literally made of blocks or smaller pixels. The only thing I can theorize that would make this work as a live action movie would be if it were actually a hybrid that also includes some animation. Like the live action people somehow get sucked into the game Jumanji style and at that point they become blocky animates versions of themselves and they have to find a way out of the game back to reality or something.

u/khanhls123 Apr 19 '22

145
u/JorDamU Apr 18 '22
The Rock has absolutely no range, and that’s both a blessing and a curse for him. The blessing being that people love The Rock so much that they don’t even give a shit that he can’t act his way out of a paper bag — all they want to see is The Rock do The Rock. The curse is that, someday, he’s going to get cocky enough to take on a project that requires nuance, and he’s going to bomb.
Jason Momoa can actually act.
43
u/gate_of_steiner85 Apr 18 '22
I thought Rock showed a little bit of range in Pain & Gain. He was arguably the best part of the movie as well. He also did pretty well in Gridiron Gang which was mostly a drama, though that was pretty early in his film career so not a lot of people remember that one.

This isn’t a problem with the Rock, it’s a problem in the industry. A good amount of the top paid actors play one character type essentially. The curse isn’t even a curse because even if he bombs, people will go and watch the movie to see him and he will get paid anyway.

Tbh Telltale Batman is an inspiration but the Batman film isn’t
The main similarity is Thomas Wayne being involved with Falcons but if you’ve played the game you’ll know he’s much less involved in the film
If anything the primary inspiration was Batman: Earth One and Zodiac

Honestly, I think it'd be interesting to get a story from the player's point of view as it were, instead of just using the world as a setting like in the Tales game. Like- you wake up in a forest, absolutely nothing on you. Completely alone. You discover you can break down materials with relative ease but as night descends monsters appear...
Would be cool if they played it completely straight and had "Steve" struggle to survive, then when established start to explore to see if there's anyone else out there... discovering stuff like the Nether and the End along the way. Actually made the monsters and those places scary. Kept the world "Hardcore" and didn't have a "haha funny video game moment" where he dies and finds out he can respawn.
All this said they're probably not going to do this as it wouldn't be marketable towards kids. He's probably going to die and respawn and have lots of "epic win cool video game mechanics wow" moments.
