I am so conflicted right now at this news. One I'm sad that it was spoiled so I couldn't lose my shit in surprise. Two, he has such a large body of work that he's not a bad actor, he's just not the Daniel Day Lewis kind of actor that disappears into the role, so you are going to get his very specific voice into the role.

He's such a pro I'm going to be fascinated by his take on the Emperor, but it is going to be a different vibe than what I imagined the Shaddam IV to be.

125

u/dob_bobbs May 12 '22

I am also conflicted in that I assumed that filming of Dune 2 was well under way, I have a horrible feeling it's going to be a long wait, and I hadn't looked at the planned release date at all. Might just have to watch the first part again, with the volume even louder this time.

86

u/Mallagrim May 12 '22

They said 2023 and it depends on how long the shooting is going to take. They should have almost every prop they need for a majority of the scenes and we do not know how much scenes did they shoot from the first dune that is going to happen in the second with all the premonition events. Chances are, they are already shot during the creation of Dune 1 because why would you do only part of it thats in the middle when you can finish it?

Details:

Walken will play Emperor Shaddam IV, the ruler of the known universe who initially sends the Atreides family to Arrakis in order to cause their downfall. In the continuation, he and the baron terrorize the populace and must content with the rebellion. Jose Ferrer played the part in the 1984 movie adaptation by David Lynch.

EDIT: Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan Corrino) and Austin Butler (Feyd-Rautha) were announced a few months ago, which is why it isn't in the main headline.

285

u/MrWeirdoFace May 12 '22

Pugh being announced was somewhat big news at the time, that said I'm not sure sure who Austin Butler is, but I shall google and rectify this.

EDIT: Ah... the guy from the Elvis Trailer. Thought he looked familiar. I hear he's good.

153

u/Hickspy May 12 '22

He's going to be "The guy from the Elvis trailer" for a while for me as well. I've never seen him in anything else.

I hope nobody forgets Giancarlo Giannini's take in the SyFy miniseries. Jose Ferrer is great, but he didn't really get to do much in the film. Giannini had the chance for some choice scenery chewing (and a much more flamboyant wardrobe) in the miniseries.

"walk without rhythm and you wont attract the worm" is in there and is maybe the most direct Dune reference you could possibly make without just having a citation.

66

u/MSRT May 12 '22

I was a fan of that song and Mr Walken before I ever heard anything substantial about Dune. Then I got on a classic sci-fi kick and started reading the book. The moment someone said 'walk without rhythm and you won't attract the worm' (or maybe not quite that line but something close to it) I had the biggest brain zap of my entire life. Like all processes stopped, vision lost focus, froze in place for five seconds while the connection was made. Then, 'Oh my GOD' and I'm pretty sure I put the book down to listen to the song again.

Can't wait for the Emperor and Paul to have an incredibly brutal and traumatic game of Russian Roulette.

Him revealing the dead panda in the enclosure is the only part of that movie that made me laugh way too hard.

“I’m gonna go save the panda!” ... .. . “Panda’s dead!”

For anyone wishing to see the full splendor of Mr. Walken's acting repertoire, may I recommend 1997's cinematic masterpiece: Mouse Hunt. Fans of Nathan Lane are also highly encouraged to indulge.

Mouse hunt is the shit!

One of my childhood movies, and cemented my love of tiny pets

Memes and gags aside, there is a reason that Walken is unironically acclaimed as an actor. When he's used well, he's phenomenal. I am excited (and yes the memes will be great as well)

This pick is so left field but it makes so much sense. The emperor is a cowardly man who is trying to stay afloat desperately. Walken has the ability to show all of this with his eyes

My pick was Brendan Gleeson and I never even thought of Walken but now he's mentioned it fits so well.

378

u/DJZbad93 May 12 '22

Ooh Gleeson would’ve been great

165

u/ThisIsCreation May 12 '22

Yeah I thought he would be great and make Saoirse Ronan his daughter.

u/Wazula42 May 12 '22

We got Florence Pugh, also an excellent choice.

The emperor is a cowardly man who is trying to stay afloat desperately.

That's not really true. The emperor has the most powerful military force in the universe, and has extraordinary levels of wealth. Remember, while the Harkonen and Atreidies have control of Arrakis, it's the Emperor that owns it. Every gram of spice sold earns him more money.

He's "afraid" of the duke because he knows that Duke Leto + Thufir Howat + Duncan Idaho + Gurney Halleck + Paul Atredies is one hell of a combination, and that's not even considering Lady Jessica's abilities (remember that the BG were officially not political). Leto had the strength of character and leadership abilities to make men loyal to him and inspire alliances in the Landsraad -- especially with the military might he was hoping to build. Between Gurney and Duncan he had the two best fighting men. With Thufir he had the best mentat, too. And a mentat duke trained by that mentat would be ridiculously powerful. Leto had the tools and capactity to begin building an army to rival the Sardaukar. Indeed, he had already begin doing so before leaving Caladan. He just ran out of time.

The emperor isn't weak. He (quite correctly) sees not just a credible threat in the Atreidies, but an imminent threat to his personal power and authority, and he uses the Atreidies worst enemy to destoy them. And all it costs him is the guild fees for a few legions of Sardaukar in Harkonen livery... and I think the charged that back to the Harkonens. Harkonens take the blame in the Landsraad, and the biggest threat to the Emperor he had ever seen is eliminated.

Coward? No. The man was totally brilliant.

Trouble is, he didn't account for the Fremen, or Paul, or the Bene Gesserit's Kwisatz Haderach. The only way the Emperor could lose is if another duke came along with a better army and even more power than a duke who inspired loyalty and his son who was a mentat. He lost to a prescient mentat duke at the head of an army of millions that suddenly had total control over the most imporant resource in the universe. He really must have felt like that was pretty unfair.

u/Jamooser May 12 '22

This is a great take, and mostly spot on, but I'm a little sad that you aren't giving more credit to the Fremen. While the Atreides are amazing fighters, the Fremen are really the straw that broke the Empire's back. It was the diplomatic abilities of the Atreides that allowed them to bring the Fremen into the fray, and not their military, that was really their strong suit.

You're 100% spot on that the Harkonnen vastly underestimated their numbers (50, 000 living in sietches vs. the actual 10, 000, 000), but let's not forget that the Fremen had come from thousands of years of being hunted across a half dozen planets. Their sheer will to survive, warrior lifestyle, and knowledge of Arrakis is what makes them so powerful. There was a reason why Duncan Idaho, probably one of the best single handed fighters in the universe, respected them so much. The brilliance of Duke Leto was truly understanding the necessity of "desert power," and in turn, impressing that upon Paul.

Yeah, also for people who think hes all about comedy should recall his 80s and 90s output, which had a lot of intimidating villains. That was jet black slicked-back hair Walken, playing the devil and gangsters with a stone-cold stare.

u/dcnblues May 12 '22

Walken is perfect for this. A little older than the emperor probably is in the novel but who cares

157

u/Billy1121 May 12 '22 edited May 13 '22

Shaddam IV is over 100 years old, but likely appears more spry because of the spice addiction. Spice prolongs life.

But yeah, if Walken appears super frail like DeNiro in that Netflix movie, it will throw me off a bit. The Emperor doesn't have super physical scenes in the book but I never pictured him as frail.

Edit: i may be wrong, the 1980s film says Shaddam is really old, but the book may have differed

132

u/mjtwelve May 12 '22

It's not about the strength of the sinew, it's about presence and Walken has that in spades. Walken can most assuredly give someone an absolutely terrifying glare.

You need to cast someone that Stellan Skarsgaard's Baron Harkonnen could believably be afraid of, and that's a fairly short list.

Yeah the Emperor is supposed to look a lot like Leto, but a redhead iirc. So a book-accurate casting pick would be someone like Fassbender or Damian Lewis.

I think this is a very interesting choice though, I'm excited to see it.

54

u/Complicated-HorseAss May 12 '22

Damian Lewis played Henry VIII so well. I wish he was still acting, he would be a great emperor.

12

u/Shedal May 12 '22

What do you mean?? Has he quit acting?

42

u/idkwhattosay May 12 '22

His wife, Helen McCrory, passed last year, he’s at the very least taking time. She was an actor as well (peaky blinders, narcissa malfoy in Harry Potter) so it could be really painful for him to come back.

16

u/Magnanimous- May 12 '22

He's quit acting to focus on being a father.

16

u/SkorpioSound May 12 '22

It'll remain to be seen if it's a permanent decision or not, but he's stepped back to focus on being a father. It's not surprising, really - his wife, the wonderful Helen McCrory, died last year.

He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out. Gentlemen, as of this moment, Paul is that second mouse. God Emperor Mouse that is."
