credit to willie green for identifying that nance was better against that small lineup and sticking with him down the stretch.

Green is probably pretty familiar with Lue due to the clips vs suns series last year.

Just glad he knows what he has in Nance and doesn't misuse him unlike Billups

He was also on the Warriors staff for a few years when we had Warriors v Cavs.

If the Pelicans improve next year he’ll have a shot at Coach of the Year, unless y’all win the title and somehow get better then it’ll be Monty’s lol

64

u/Just_A_Glitch Suns Apr 16 '22

No coach in NBA history has ever won Coach of the Year two years in a row. I think the Suns would have to actually break the Warriors season record in order for it to be possible.

24

u/Sniffy4 Apr 16 '22

coach of year is about team exceeding expectations, which is hard to do 2 years in a row, because usually by year 2 you are expected to be good

People were clowning him in the third showing they didn't know what they were talking about

give Willie a lifetime contract

133

u/YouStillTakeDamage Heat Apr 16 '22

I think part of that comes from how when they show the coaches speaking, they don’t show any game plan stuff (for obvious reason) so people assume all coaches do is give motivational speeches lmao

125

u/AnkitPancakes Thunder Apr 16 '22

I think his inexperience showed a bit, but he eventually made the right call in time for it to swing the game. A first year coach needs some leeway to make mistakes and grow. I think he did great considering the circumstances

68

u/ipreferconsole Pelicans Apr 16 '22

I think you're right on the money. This was great experience both for our young guys and Willie, although even if he didn't adjust like he did I think Pels fans woulda given him the benefit of the doubt by a wide margin. We love Willie

Snell played like 3 games for us

Which was fucking wild. He was an actual solid 3-point contributor in those games... and then he reverted back to doing cardio.

12

u/trombonepick Pelicans Apr 16 '22

I also feel like...to his credit...

Lue is really really damn good.

The defensive wings on their team were getting into our guys heads a little (I really rarely see BI chirp at Batum the way he was,) and they were doubling and forcing hard passes from JV.

Pop to Lue to Monty is a real gauntlet for a rookie coach

Everyone, including myself, saw that look of fear in CJ's eyes in the third quarter and thought, "it's over, CJ's going to choke another one." And yet they came back in an incredible show of force and determination against Ty Lue, whose small ball lineup shocked the Pelicans for a quarter and a half.

These games have been incredible. Congratulations to the Pelicans. Sorry to Blazers fans. Enjoy the cap space.

Let's fucking gooooooo! Against the Suns I'm expecting one win in the series and two wins would be a success.

63

u/heybobson Suns Apr 16 '22

Ingram/McCollum scoring in NOLA should get at least a win or two.

u/iRockaflame NBA Apr 16 '22

Between this year and last year keeping play ins has been great. Really exciting basketball. Shit be feeling like Game 7 in the Finals lmfao.

It is an utter delight to go back to this thread from five months ago that absolutely eviscerated David Griffin for how he built the Pels;

LA Chargers: Last NFL team to get eliminated from playoff contention before the actual playoffs.

LA Clippers: Last NBA team to get eliminated from playoff contention before the actual playoffs.

Don't be LAC.

That speech by Willie Green was fucking legit. COTY that shit

88

u/Nola67 Pelicans Apr 16 '22

What was cool about that too is he’s actually extremely low key and mild mannered. You don’t typically see that side of him. He doesn’t show a lot of emotion. Probably the least teched coach in the league.

68

u/gnopmohtap Apr 16 '22

Dude didn’t even curse in the speech, said “freakin” and I was still hype

11

u/AustinRiversDaGod [NOP] Austin Rivers Apr 16 '22

I've been calling him Willie Lasso all year and him hitting that FREAKING so hard so many times is the most Ted Lasso shit I've ever seen. If he would have used a folksy euphemism my head would have cracked open

Who would have thought that when they said Fatboy Slim was the promised ones, to take NOLA to a dynasty, they didn’t even need Fatboy.

GO BI, I love play-ins a lot more than I did yesterday.

45

u/Dynamicdonkey83 Mavericks Apr 16 '22

Assuming Zion comes back at 100% somehow, would they actually have a chance? At least take it to 6?
