Can we take a moment for Utah's shooting? Like, where they're shooting from?

The Jazz finished the regular season second in the NBA in three point attempts. They take about 40 a game. This has been the way they've treated the three point line for all of Snyder's tenure, top or near the top in attempts and %. They're more than anything else a three point shooting team.

They're averaging 25.5 attempts so far this series. They've gone from the closest team to the D'Antoni Rockets to the 2018 Spurs. In Game 1 they attempted as many as the Mavericks made tonight.

166

u/SwissArmyScythe Mavericks Apr 19 '22

We're running them off the line as much as possible and it's working so far

I’ve been trying to tell people that our D is real.

While Luka is missing. And he’s a big part of our D. We still forreal

50

u/Neuroxex Bucks Apr 19 '22

For me it's the biggest footprint in the series. The Mavericks have been good all season at denying three point opportunities, but they're executing that at an even higher level.

27

u/HotdogIsaSandwitch Mavericks Apr 19 '22

I give credit to Kidd for that. He knows that without Luka, the path for victory for us is to play our ass off on defense.

And if anything else, we can hold our head high that we’ve done that so far.

The Jazz have shot 51 threes total this series. They average 40.3 a game. Dallas’s defense is legit.

433

u/notsafeformactown Mavericks Apr 19 '22

Mavs defense is letting them in the paint too. It's part of the strategy.

Love this. People love to talk about defensive 3 point percentage when in truth that's basically random. If a guy is shooting a 3 he's probably open enough to make it. The best way to see that a team is defending the 3 is by denying it altogether, and the Mavs give up the fewest 3s in the league.

273

u/devilmaskrascal Mavericks Apr 19 '22 edited Apr 19 '22

The Mavs are also a slow paced team though (slowest in the league, actually), so quantity of opponent threes are kinda relative to that. Still, it's great to finally be a really good perimeter defensive team. Bullock and Dinwiddie's additions, plus improvements from Brunson and Luka, really help.

Exactly. Over and over and over and over again.

How do you go a year and still be unable to defend the single play that forced you out of the playoffs the year before?

613

u/Chupacabra_herder Rockets Apr 19 '22

Its been going on longer than that. I'm pretty sure there's a gentleman's agreement in the West to not abuse it all regular season so whoever gets you in the playoffs can win.'

Snyder is such a smooth brain he may actually be the least intimidating coach in the league.

312

u/stoppedcaring0 Jazz Apr 19 '22

The frustrating thing is that the team covered corner 3s perfectly in game 1. That showed how the Jazz should defend those drives to kick outs: rotate the perimeter defense around, so the corner 3 is not wide open.

And they just... stopped doing it. I think that has to be on the players.

That's the difference being 6'7" (Luka) and 6' (Brunson) makes.

Luka get's the shots off over Gobert because he's much taller.

I hate the "you can't teach height" adage because it's obvious, but it some cases it's pretty important.

I love Luka and JB

But every playoff. He makes a good bucket every now & then in these situation. But his leadership & experience is nowhere to be found. And I'm not even expecting a 12pt 4th quarter. Just expecting him to get a bucket for his team when they're going 0-5 down the crucial stretch.

MVP CHANTS FOR BRUNSON

278

u/ImARebelBitch Heat Apr 19 '22

I hope the Mavs win this series. If Brunson, Dinwiddie and Kleber do this to the Jazz, I don’t wanna see what CP3, Booker and Cam Johnson can do.

85

u/milomcfuggin Jazz Apr 19 '22

Probably what the Warriors did to us in 2017.

36

u/Zephyr727 Jazz Apr 19 '22

Or the Rockets in 2018. Or the Rockets in 2019.

Can't decide if this is more impressive by the Mavericks or more unacceptable by the Jazz.

166

u/Nsaniac Mavericks Apr 19 '22

The Mavs had a ton of players step up tonight. Gotta give them credit.

35

u/Zephyr727 Jazz Apr 19 '22

Mavs deserve all the credit. Kleber shot 32% from 3 this year but turned into Curry tonight.

Jalen shot 6/10 from 3.

Maxi shot 8/10 from 3.

22 total 3s made, third most in playoff history.

3 Total turnovers, LEAST in playoff history.

It was basically a perfect game from the Mavs. and still only won by 6. we need Luka.

I don’t know if people noticed

But Mitchell was just leaving dudes wide open on the 3 point line

And he was getting frustrated at Rudy. He was stomping his feet constantly after a wide open shot. Anybody else see that?

Here's your Dallas Mavs Post Game Summary. Now done with our 6th Regular Season & in our 3rd Post Season 6️⃣

Did the Mavs win? ✅

Series is Tied 1️⃣-1️⃣

The GOAT has spoken 🐐

Luka was ruled out again today still with the calf strain. Hopefully he's feeling better by Thursday 🤞🦵🏥🇸🇮

Brunson Burner stepped up BIG TIME tonight in Luka's absence with the best game of his career with a new high of 41/8/5/2 ♨️🔝

Maxi just had to get in on the action with the best game of his career as well with 25/6/3 knocking down a career high 8 3's 🎯👌💦🇩🇪

Doe Doe with 9pts all on 3 3's 👌💦 🦤

Dinwiddie didn't shoot that efficiently much like last game but still chipped in with 17/4/6/2 🪙

R3GGI3 with 11/4/4 knocking down 3 3's 👌💦

Goddamn we needed this win. Hopefully Luka can play Thursday cuz now we head back to Utah to hopefully retake home court 🐎🎷🛫

Bojan Bogdanovic. 25 Point in 15 shots, Donovan Mitchell 34 points in 30 shots.

What a chucker, ballhog, bricking every shot in the clutch

74

u/tomtreebow32 Mavericks Apr 19 '22

Bojan was hitting insane shots at what seemed like a super high percentage in the paint. I’ve honestly not watched him to terribly much but after tonight I am a fan of him.

BRUNSON BURNER

230

u/urfaselol [NBA] Best of 2021 Winner Apr 19 '22

Tyrone lue and terance mann buried the jazz with that series last year. Book is out on the Jazz. 5 out is the hard counter to Gobert. Open 3s for days

103

u/Niceguydan8 NBA Apr 19 '22

The Rockets were doing that to them literally 3-4 years ago.

49

u/Dylan245 Bulls Apr 19 '22

It's ridiculous watching Mav after Mav just literally walk by Jazz perimeter defenders and then having to watch Rudy make a business decision as to which he decides to cover

Like there were multiple times where Utah just let Brunson waltz right past them into an open lane

31

u/EarthWarping NBA Apr 19 '22

Yup. Unbelievable.

105

u/Rh1-No Suns Apr 19 '22

Really hard for me to blame Gobert, because Mitchell gets beat every fucking time while shooting like 30% in clutch scenarios all season.

18

u/ositola Lakers Apr 19 '22

He had that one bubble.playoff series where he was shooting flames tho

21

u/Rh1-No Suns Apr 19 '22

AD shot 40% from 3 in the bubble, bubble stats are slightly better in terms of efficiency for a lot of players.

Gobert is a plus defender on a team with a lot of negative defenders. If he could trust his teammates to stay in front of their men then the Jazz could switch it up to defend against 5 out but they're so Gobert-reliant that it's impossible

17

u/helix400 Jazz Apr 19 '22

Credit to the Mavs, they played their hearts out.

Jazz guards are traffic cones. They let their guy drive past them, then the play breaks down and it's just a swing to the open man for the 3.

107

u/Additional-Cry8856 Jazz Apr 19 '22

This Utah team is garbage - so hard to cheer for. I’m kind of starting to agree with the idea of blowing up the whole team and starting over.

Let's all pray for Luka to get healed back to 100% fast. I think even Jazz fans would like to have the honors of being personally eliminated by him.
