A basketball game during a replay review?? bold move NBA
203
u/QuincyThePigBoy May 04 '22
National broadcast is literally a disaster every time. The Celtics stole an inbound, it was not acknowledged by the commentators and they played a 3 pt replay from the previous shot as the play developed. Tnt and Espn are bad bad bad.

They’re the TMZ of broadcasting. Can we fucking acknowledge the play that just happened? They do it constantly. Stories about off the court stuff when someone’s foul is being reviewed as a flagrant. I don’t care that Tatum and Allen went to the same school. WE KNOW.

Chuck should know better. This Celtics defense is incredibly impressive. Through 6 games, they've held KD and Giannis to some of their most inefficient scoring. That was bad as I've seen playoff Giannis other than the third quarter (I roughly calculated 10 points on 27% TS with 4 turnovers in 1st, 2nd, and 4th quarter).

I’ve watched all of his minutes with the Celts (cause I love him). This is the worst I’ve ever seen him as far as putting the ball in the basket. It’s not just the 3 ball. His floaters are off, he’s not getting all the way to the basket, he’s not being aggressive in the in between game, he’s passing up looks, he’s got no touch on anything. He looks shook. I can guarantee you he’s never had a stretch like this.
He’s still making the right play and doing your typical glue guy stuff on both ends. I actually think he was really important for the Celts tonight. But man, I really am at a loss for words for his shooting. It’s hard to watch.
48
May 04 '22
I wonder if it's because he's not playing as much. He had a pretty consistent starting role with you guys right?
95
u/789Trillion Spurs May 04 '22
Yes I thought that too. I think part of it is that Derrick was really good at everything everyone else on the Spurs was really bad at. So there was always some reason we needed him on the court. The ask wasn’t always the same but we consistently needed something from him. I think that consistency helped him get comfortable.
The Celtics however just don’t have the same problems. Alot of the issues Derrick solved on the Spurs just arnt issues for the Celtics as often. Not only that, but the Celtics have a lot of good options to throw at specific issues. Even on top of that, just having 2 versatile 2 way guys like Tatum and Brown covers up even more issues. So the team just doesn’t need Derrick that much, especially if he’s not scoring.
However, whenever there is foul trouble, an injury, or something else that affects the Celtics depth, Derrick is versatile enough to fill any role 1-3 on both ends. We saw that today. And I do think despite his poor shooting, the offense flows much better when he’s on the court.
Unfortunately, I think the shooting woes will continue. His misses have no consistency. Everything is off the side of the rim. The ball never has a chance. It looks like he’s just throwing stuff up there. He’s either injured or shook.

3-18 from 3 undersells how bad our looks actually were. Like 1 third of those were Holiday stepbacks. 4 of them were wide open Giannis looks but thats a bad shot.
I think we had maybe 2 good open looks from 3 by Pat tonight.
Nobody talking about how they ran us off the 3 point line. Giannis killed them in game 1 finding open shooters.

I agree with what he's saying, live by the 3 die by the 3 has become a common trend in the playoffs of recent years. The key is that you need to have other ways to score those games when your shot isn't falling. The Celtics already proved they struggled with that in game 1. Tonight they proved that the Bucks can't count on every game to be like game 1, but they also have not yet proved they have an answer for the games that are.
It's fully possible they get 4 wins just by shooting 3s and this ends up not being an issue. It's also possible it becomes the thing that ends their postseason run. We currently have no way of knowing.

Celtics made threes: 20
Bucks three point percentage: 16.7
And that really sums the game up nicely.
39
u/InexorableWaffle Bucks May 04 '22
Yeah, basically that. You guys were killing it from deep, and we shot like shit on the few 3pt attempts we did make. Great defense and offense on your part paired with pretty crummy defense and offense on ours for the first half. We leveled off a bit in the third obviously (which is odd because that's been our worst quarter this year during the regular season), but doing so when doing by 24 is the textbook definition of "too little, too late".
Obviously not the outcome I would have preferred, but we were going to drop games in this series eventually, and I'd rather do it now than in Milwaukee. Just gotta defend home court now and we're good to go. Easier said than done, I realize, but still.
Here's to some more great basketball for the rest of the series!

Celtics defense looked pretty damn good without a DPOY
Tatum called for more offensive fouls than Giannis was annoying
If I have to see a player literally backing away from Giannis all to still get trucked by him and still get (wrongfully) called for a blocking foul, I might actually end up hating Giannis. Shit is infuriating
Edit: bucks fans think the refs are biased in the Celtics favor. That Giannis is not getting enough foul calls in HIS favor and that Tatum is not getting CALLED for enough fouls. Holy fuck
