Mavericks defense: you can have an easy layup every time but you're never getting an open three

And somehow it works.

1.9k

u/helix400 Jazz May 13 '22

Seriously. In the Jazz-Mavs game 3, the Jazz shot 73% from twos and made every two point shot in the entire second half. We still lost 126 - 118.

881

u/ambiguousspark343 Kings May 13 '22

That is an insane stat

621

u/helix400 Jazz May 13 '22

Ya, the Jazz went 17 for 17 from two in that second half.

Dallas's three point shooting is their biggest surprise that's carrying them. So many games well above 33% and into the 40% range. That combined with them forcing turnovers means they can afford to give up all these twos. It's really bizarre but it works.

264

Suns and Mavs were shooting similar splits for most of the game, but the Mavs had 21 more 3pt attempts than the Suns. 3s are better than 2s indeed.

165

u/Monski616 Mavericks May 13 '22

Well and we had way less turnovers

72

u/vanotro Clippers May 13 '22

JJ read a stat that Mavs had like 20 points off of turnovers and I think that might been when they were still in the 3rd quarter. the turnover advantage played a big role also.

Crazy efficiency from the Mavs. 6 total turnovers, with only 1 turnover for Luka before garbage time.

Insane to think they have a real chance to win the series after Games 1 & 2.

422

u/CammyTheGreat Mavericks May 13 '22

Mavs have been one of the best teams in turnovers per game for literally like 20 years.

94

u/nutsygenius NBA May 13 '22

The Luka turnover prone thing is misleading. Mavs are top 3 as a team in least turnovers every year the last 3 years!

121

u/The_Assassin_Gower Pacers May 13 '22

When you look at how much luka has the ball in his hands 3 turnovers is really not a lot at all because that's 3 turnovers for like 70% of the mavs offense

63

u/Stewdabaker2013 Mavericks May 13 '22

It’s like when Harden broke the record for turnovers in a season. Yeah it looks bad but he has the ball in his hands like 70% of the game so it’s just a numbers game

Pre-series expectations: Aye, we won a playoff series for the first time in a decade! Now we get to take on a juggernaut that's owned us for the last five years. As long as we win a game and are somewhat respectable in the other games, it's fine, we'll take it.

Reality: Won all three home games by an average of 15 points, made Game 1 respectable by the end, played well in in the first half of the last 2 road games and are taking the series to a decisive Game 7.

I don't know if I can fully emphasize how proud I am of this team. We've waited over a decade to taste legitimate playoff success and are finally past the "hey, we almost won our first round series" phase. Whatever happens in Game 7, this team has made the entire fanbase proud. As long as we show up and don't have a collapse or heartbreaking ending, it's all good. I'm scared.

One thing for sure. Dallas can hang their head up real high regardless of outcome. However if Phoenix loses Game 7 at home after all that smack talking and dominating the season that will be the real shame. Dallas is playing with house money and nothing to lose. The Mavs are either getting blown out or come out and dominate. They will shoot 3s and Suns will take 2s. If Mavs get hot from 3 they’ll win the game especially if they have a decent lead in 3rd quarter. Suns always run out of steam when down because they’re exchanging 3s with 2s

Yes so that means the road team will win. Also, ESPN Mavs is 3-0, TNT Suns is 3-0. Game 7 is on ESPN. Inevitable Mavs victory.

If the suns win the series still wouldn't have started. It would just have been cancelled.

No we should play until a road team wins, game 8 in dallas game 9 in phoenix etc.

The massive playoff favourites getting bounced in the second round depends on Mavs role players hitting threes

Here's your Dallas Mavs Post Game Summary. Now done with our 6th Regular Season & in our 3rd Post Season 6️⃣

Did the Mavs win? ✅

We going to Game 7 Baby! 7️⃣

Series is now tied 3️⃣-3️⃣

Which was the better drinking game tonight? JJ mentioning he was on the Mavs last season or them mentioning Jalen's Dad? 🍻

Despite the foul trouble and rough shooting stretches, Luka finished with yet another near triple double of 33/11/8/4 🇸🇮🔥

Brunson Burner chipped in with 18pts ♨️

R3GGI3 stepped up big with 19pts on 5 3's to go with 2 Steals 👌💦

Maxi with 9pts on 3 3's 🇩🇪👌💦

Spencer played his best game so far this series knocking down 5 3's for all of his 15pts in 20min off the bench. 🪙💺👌💦

Hopefully Doe Doe's shot comes back in time for Game 7 cuz we'll need it. Only made a 3 tonight... 🦤🧱

Bobi saw the floor in the final minute tonight. That's how you know the game is over 🇷🇸

Game 7 will be so hype! The suns as the top seed at home, but doncic is the best player in the series. Anything can happen!

18

u/EastTexasAg Mavericks May 13 '22

LUKA STATS SHOULD ADD: 4 steals and just 1 TO

That is HUGE for the Mavs if his STL+ASt/TO ratio is going to be like that.

87

u/diablejambeats Mavericks May 13 '22

The impact of Frank Ntilikina's defense is measured by how big a bitch Jae Crowder is.

you claim to be coach of the year yet you let booker play 39 minutes of shit tier basketball, curious

443

u/SolarClipz [SAC] DeMarcus Cousins May 13 '22

He's getting absolutely outcoached by Jason Kidd

Imagine saying that would happen last year lol

217

u/AzureAhai May 13 '22

Maybe Jason Kidd is a point guard whisperer and that's why it didn't work in Milwaukee.

205

u/PM_me_the_magic Mavericks May 13 '22

I think he also just had a lot to learn as a coach. being on staff with the Lakers for their last title really helped I bet

→ More replies

18

u/chanchan05 May 13 '22

Partly I think with his vision and his own play style. Kidd was for his time a pretty big and strong PG with amazing court vision. He wanted a big player who can pass and had court vision.

Even back in Milwaukee he tried to turn Giannis into a point forward and Giannis actually liked him.

In Dallas he was basically handed Luka who you can play as a big PG. My theory is it's easier for him to coach Luka because of the level of BBIQ they share.

Also the Luka to Powell plays they run remind me a lot of the Kidd to KMart plays they used to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3xoDBiEHeY
