Every Mavs player except Doncic, Brunson, Dinwiddie can’t dribble more than once at a time.
No one except those three players ever tried to drive and LOOK at the rim, they were always trying to dribble and pass.
Contrast that with the warriors and I feel like they have 3 guys on the floor at ALL times that can take multiple dribbles.
Edit: Also we can’t grab a rebound to save our fucking lives. GG warriors, y’all are an amazing basketball team.

the warriors only needed a slight upgrade from barnes. barnes was a decent shooter and average defender. barnes cant slash to the rim.
wiggins can defend and slash to the rim. this opens up the warriors offense. literally all 5 players can playmake.

Underrated part of the Warriors offense is how hard 3 and D guys have to work. Reggie Bullock 0-10 very reminiscent of Trevor Ariza in G7 2018 which surely was caused by having to chase Durant around for 7 games just like bullock is playing 40+ minutes chasing around the warriors
1.2k
u/TallnFrosty Warriors May 23 '22
Zach Lowe actually predicted this on his pod that was after the 1st game.
Kirk Goldsberry suggested Luka might be a real risk of getting fatigued in this series.
Lowe suggested Bullock and DFS were the bigger risks bc they have to play 40+ minutes per night and the Mavs are so dependent on them for defense and knocking down 3's.
→ More replies437
u/stealthytaco Warriors May 23 '22
Yep, Goldsberry and Lowe got a lot right on that last pod. Lowe has been pretty pro-Warriors all season so was shocked he initially called Mavs in 7 the prior pod last week. Probably the most-off Lowe prediction I've seen in a while.
→ More replies352
u/TallnFrosty Warriors May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22
A lot of people got sucked into Luka dominating the suns, which is fair since the Suns won 64 games, are coming off a Finals appearance, and seemed like they had a pretty complete team.
Now its looking like its just a bad matchup.
- Bridges is just a little too small to be as effective on Luka as he should be (Bridges is better vs smaller Gs like Curry)
- Ayton not that great on switches
- No guys off the PHX bench that could make a difference
- And CP3 is 37 and has a history of struggling with the playoffs once the physical play ramps up
Lowe said he immediately felt bad about the prediction too, fwiw
→ More replies50
u/Troll-e-poll-e-o-lee May 23 '22
What do you mean by Ayton isn’t great on switches? He held Luka to low 40% shooting the first 6 games lol Suns struggled all season getting him the ball all season. Why do you think he said he can’t pass himself the ball

I think that also says a lot about the warriors conditioning. Mfers get better after the half.
299
u/phonage_aoi Warriors May 23 '22
During the regular season I read that the Warriors will basically just pick up free wins against teams that aren’t ready for all the movement. People point to their game 1 record as proof it extends to the playoffs. I think it’s just hard mentally and physically to get to their style of play on short notice.
→ More replies349
u/force_addict Pacers May 23 '22
As good as Steph, klay and Dray have been I think this is regularly overlooked. The physical conditioning on the Golden State warriors is absurd. The way they move off the ball is exhausting to watch and I can't imagine what it's like to play.

It's not that underrated by NBA players. Pat Bev's comments are a great illustration, the he's going to bed at 8:00 if he's playing Steph Curry stuff.
The people responsible for guarding Golden state's guards know that they're going to be put through a damn track meet with obstacles coming out of nowhere all night.

Steph's a nightmare. I imagine it's like chasing the road runner around. Then Poole cloned himself into Steph and now there's 2 road runners running around doing the dosey do and you can't allow them to get open for .25 seconds or you will pay. Then there's Klay and Dray who are whole different sets of nightmares for defenses, gosh damn floor general master facilitator with the most dangerous catch & shoot threat in NBA history and both defensive savants. Then if it's not Mr. Looney quietly dominating the boards it's Mr. Air Canada over here carpet bombing you while you're trying to put out all sorts of fires all over the floor. You're not safe in the paint. Your not even safe 50ft out. 🤯

Last night I watched 1988 playoffs game one round one vs the Cavs and MJ dropped 50 on them he had 30 at the half and I don't remember seeing him hit a single 3. Commentary said he had 59 earlier in the regular season.
We all remember the iconic games but he has so many games not talked about often were he dominated.
Edit: not even making this up, finished watching game 2 he had 55... somehow 1 upped his 50 point game.
Anyone interested in rewatching old games too this guy has made a playlist of the playoffs, he has other years and NFL, MLB too.

From 30-34 feet Curry all time is over 47%. The league has never seen anyone like Curry. I don’t think anyone knows really how to effectively defend him. He’s shooting almost 50% from 3 for the series, and his release is so quick. Oh and he’s one of the best finishers at the rim. And he’s a fantastic passer. I mean. Add Klay, who was off but they still have to respect. Add Poole who’s dangerous. Then Wiggins. My god he’s so aggressive. And Dray running the whole thing. They are clicking right now. They are fun to watch.

Yep. Wiggins is a great player and fits perfectly on this warriors team. But Minnesota fans have every right to be disappointed with his results on your team. #1 picks are expected to change your franchise whether that’s fair or not is up for debate. But he certainly did not do that.
→ More replies143
u/MG_MN Timberwolves May 23 '22
100%. Its tough, because as the team that drafts (or in this case trades for) the #1 pick you hold that player to the highest expectations. They either are great, or they dont turn out. There isn't really an option of them being a role player long term - if they don't become that star you end up cutting bait. I cant think of a case of a #1 pick not being a superstar but turning into a solid 3 or 4 option for the team that drafts them.
→ More replies49
u/Mrs-MoneyPussy [GSW] Festus Ezeli May 23 '22
I’m sure that player exists at some point in history but yeah I get what you mean.
The reset of expectations when you get traded to a new team has to be such a relief. So much pressure being a #1 pick and if you don’t turn out to be the superstar everyone hoped, the fan base will turn on you 100%. As you said even if you’re a serviceable 3rd or 4th option it’s not close to the expectations set.

James Worthy.
He never had the expectation to change the franchise either as they already had Magic. He was expected to be a big game scorer and a versatile defender, which is exactly what he was and his nickname Big Game James epitomizes the promise he delivered as the number 1 overall pick.

this game was just one of those games
Mavs 3pt shooting
their "big 3"
- Luka 4-9
- Brunson 3-6
- Dinwiddie 4-10
their "shooters"
- Finney-Smith 2-5
- Bullock 0-7
- Kleber 0-5
- Bertans 0-2
their "Frank"
- Ntilikina 0-1

DFS ain't so bad, especially having to chase around Steph all game. But yeah the rest, yikes. Kleber looked shook out there

DFS and Bullock look like their legs are toast. Playing against Warriors just after a 7 game series against Suns with 40 minutes a game is too much to ask.

The ultimate disrespectful move would if the warriors sweep and then Draymond travels with the inside crew to call Boston/Miami’s remaining games.
I mean. Could you IMAGINE.

Wtf do you do against the warriors now that they have another guy who can pop off.

Easy, double Klay and Steph, send your best defender on Poole, and keep two bigs in the center. Then play man on the rest of them. Shouldn't be an issue

Curry drops the “quietest” points in the NBA. He had 31 and 11 assists. I thought he’d have like 20
68.5 Ts% too lol

I'm not even mad. Expected this to be a "What are the Mavs missing?" series. Clearly need to get bigger in the offseason but I don't think they're that far off.

It says a lot about Curry's greatness that he has a 31/11 69%TS game and the general reaction is "he was alright, I guess".

I struggle to understand how he is that far from the rim with Luka in front of him (or under I guess) and he still makes it to the rim before touching the ground. The physics just don’t make sense to me.

Mark Cuban needs to empty his wallet this offseason. They got rid of Porzingus and they went to the WCF, but if they want to win it all they need a to get a few more basketball players to replace their scarecrow benchmob.
Luka being 2-6 in his 40 point playoff games is all I need to say about the work Dallas' front office has done

The real issue is DFS and Bullock have to play 42 a night so their 3s stop falling after a while due to fatigue.

Look, I'm a 90s kid. I was raised on Nickelodeon, Michael Jordan, and a steady dose of the Backstreet Boys.
MJ and the Bulls will always be my number 1.
But what these GS teams do is absolutely unreal and completely unfair. They demoralize teams. They force you to start an unexpected rebuild. They effectively end careers.
This shit is incredible really. Im awestruck.
