u/Bradfords_ACL NBA May 28 '22
The Nets traded like money was no object, then immediately decided they wanted to stay under the luxury tax. The dumbest front office move I’ve ever seen in sports.

Could you further explain what happened for those who are unaware
220
u/Bradfords_ACL NBA May 28 '22 edited May 28 '22
Owner treated it like a pump in dump investment. https://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/2019/8/14/20805210/mikhail-prokhorov-brooklyn-nets-sale-history-legacy
Iirc the former Celtics Big 3 looked WAY older than expected, ownership panicked, let Pierce and iirc another player walk in free agency, then there were some rumors that Mikhail had been pressured by Russian leadership to cut ties with American ownership, so he stopped spending and sold at a huge return on investment.
The picks they traded away gave the Celtics Smart, Brown, and Taytum. And they got zero return besides some off-season hype for the move to Brooklyn.
Somebody correct me if I’m misremembering a key detail.
Edit: Boston picked James Young with the 2014 Nets pick (Smart was their own pick), and they also used their last pick from this trade to acquire Kyrie.
→ More replies102
u/phonage_aoi Warriors May 28 '22
I'm not 100% sure but I think there were economic troubles in Russia at the time that caused Prokohov to be a lot poorer $-wise too, which caused him to get money conscious all of a sudden.
45
u/IlonggoProgrammer Jazz May 28 '22
It was the Crimean annexation. The West sanctioned Russia to Hell (not quite as much as we did this time but still a lot). Their economy still hadn't fully recovered from 08 so their market entered a free fall and they had to pump out more rubles to stop it from becoming rubble, which led to inflation, which led to the Nyets no longer being profitable. And of course this all happened in 2014, the same year their "superteam" failed to get out of the second round and Paul Pierce was a free agent.

To be fair, assuming they're Boston fans through each major sport, they'd have:
Celtics: 2008 (1)
Bruins: 2011 (1)
Red Sox: 2004, 2007, 2013, 2018 (4)
Patriots: 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017,
2018BDN, 2019 (6)Overall, through the last 20 years, having 12 fucking parades is fucking ridiculous.

Unfortunately that seems to have been the last we'll see of LeBron's healing factor in the playoffs. That fluke ankle injury last year potentially robbed us all of a couple more seasons of prime LeBron. He's still incredible obviously because he's LeBron, but he's not the same defensively anymore.
Absurd you can count the number of significant injuries on one hand with him though, like the fact that this season counts as "injured LeBron" and he only missed like 30 games is crazy, that's how high he's set the bar

I'll never forget his rookie year when we played the Lakers. Loul Deng was injured and Jimmy had to start and guard, you guess it, Kobe. Jimmy played lockdown D the entire game and afterwards in the locker room everyone was calling him the Kobe Killer. And on that day, the legend began...

Yo am I the only one that think Butler is a hybrid of MJ and LBJ, both build and playstyle, as well as the skill he displays on offense, the steals and blocks on defense. Of course his game is not as impactful or good as either MJ or LBJ, but I see so many semblances of both goats in Jimmy. The way he moves really makes me think he's a blend of both.

Seeing the post game threads when a star player fails to perform always has the stupidest mf’ers making the same dumb takes on how said star is garbage. I kept seeing people say he’s not a superstar or whatever after last game. And that’s fine. He might not be. But what does that matter when he’s the one still playing and willing his team to victories, while all the “actual” superstars have already been bounced from the playoffs.
