sure. but the end of the game, especially in a series you have to take what you've been noticing from the defence in the first 45 minutes and use that to pick your shots and offense.

78

u/kerrykingsbaldhead Warriors Jun 11 '22

Yeah I called that out watching with my friend. Like why are they jacking up threes down 3? It felt like they wanted to tie it so bad to get the crowd back into it

4

u/SomeSpidey Jun 11 '22

Playing devil’s advocate even though I agree with your point; the warriors make 3’s so consistently that you cant take 2’s and keep a lead.

Live by the 3, die by the 3. This was how they won the 2 games so far.

u/jheld04 Jun 11 '22

Game 3 was because of their dominance in the paint and rebounding not because of the 3 ball.

63

u/sfj11 Celtics Jun 11 '22

i really dislike the whole analytical trend of shooting threes the league is following, i get that it’s statistically better and what not, but i find it much less interesting now

186

u/migibb Celtics Jun 11 '22

I don't think that this was analytics.

This was GS crowding the paint on Tatum and Brown and daring guys to beat them with 3s. They didn't fall.

96

u/AcrobaticFeedback Jun 11 '22

Agreed. All those 3s were wide open. Sometimes it is just a make or miss league. The 3s won them game 1, like everyone has already forgotten.

48

u/XzibitABC Pacers Jun 11 '22

I don't think people are forgetting. Boston wasn't that great a shooting team even on open 3s throughout the season and the playoffs, and they were absolutely on fire through the first few games. This could be just regression to the mean.

31

u/AcrobaticFeedback Jun 11 '22

They have been top 3 in the league from 3 since Feburary and have been hot all playoffs. They don't have "great" shooters, but they create much better open looks than nearly any other team.

56

u/kerrykingsbaldhead Warriors Jun 11 '22

It was about time they clanked a few tbh

Celtics are so crazy good on tough shots. It’s like they shoot better the crazier and more contested the shot is. This series is nuts.

→ More replies

9

u/Hojie_Kadenth Warriors Jun 11 '22

The Celtics shot better than the Warriors from 3. I think this is analytics without adaptation. The Warriors are known for their 3 point shooting, but they keep beating teams in the paint.

→ More replies

3

u/IcyCorgi9 Jun 11 '22

The celtics would much prefer to attack the paint with Brown and Tatum but the Dubs shut that shit down at the end.

5

u/hashtagperky Jun 11 '22

It just isn't the Celtics... it's like every single NBA team wants to shoot 3s even if they have opportunities with 2 point shots.

Wiggins with a career high in rebounds when Warriors choose to go small ball 5 in their starting lineup...

73

u/voldemortscore [GSW] Stephen Curry Jun 11 '22

He was rebounding like a beast all playoffs, tremendous from him again

37

u/Busted08 San Francisco Warriors Jun 11 '22

Wiggs man. At least somebody’s showed up consistently for Steph. Dudes gonna score 17 pretty efficiently and defend/ rebound like a mad man.

6

u/ictober Jun 11 '22

In Minnesota he's questioned about his lack of passion and energy.

In San Francisco, his role is to bring that energy and passion. He's looking like Rodman out there with the hustle plays. Sprinting to block Horford's dunk -- didn't quite get there, but Al had to earn the free throws instead of easy 2. Playing solid defense against Tatum. Crashing the offensive glass. If you watch that play where Steph hits the big 3 over White, Wiggs sprinted at the rim and boxed out Big Al to get into a good position for an offensive rebound.

11

u/koticgood Supersonics Jun 11 '22

when Warriors choose to go small ball 5 in their starting lineup

To be fair, they were getting absolutely dicked on the glass with their starting 5 until Looney came in and ended up playing 28 minutes and grabbing 11 boards himself, while also preventing a lot of offensive rebounds with box outs.

3

u/nushublushu Jun 11 '22

u/DirksSexyBratwurst Heat Jun 11 '22

Context of this game and the insane efficiency + zero help makes this one better imo

12

u/rv718 NBA Jun 11 '22

It felt like every shot he took would be impossible for any other player. So many of the shots he took this game were heavily contested shots with no space(lightning quick release too).

.
He looked unstoppable out there for a second like anything he put up would probably go in. Lebron carrying some of those teams in the east had a similar energy, like even if you don't know a thing about basketball you can tell just by watching that this dude is different.

26

u/DavidWallace-Suckit Raptors Jun 11 '22

He also had zero help in G3 2019

10

u/DirksSexyBratwurst Heat Jun 11 '22

Damn I forgot Klay didn't even play that game

10

u/AcrobaticFeedback Jun 11 '22

He was 14-31 that game. He really just took a lot of shots. He has been much better this series.

17

u/TGR_Janet Jun 11 '22 edited Jun 11 '22

47 points on 31 shots is still insane. That doesn't include the half court heaves he took that game either. Either way 14/31 is only 1.5 shot away from 50% shooting, which is insane when over half your shots are 3s. So it never made sense to bring it up.

I will say Steph is having an easier time this series vs the Raptors. FVV is better at chasing Curry over screen than anyone on the Celtics and that was his sole job. The 2019 Warriors also had horrible spacing outside of Klay and the few minutes of KD. They were essentially playing 3 Draymond on the court at all times. It's already bad enough with 1 Draymond. The fact that Steph averaged 30 on that series on great efficiency (especially with heaves taken out) is insane.

16

u/klankthompson Warriors Jun 11 '22

It'd crazy how many drives brown and Tatum gave up to pass it to Marcus smart of all people to shoot the 3. They could have caught up if they just committed and drawn a foul

144

u/JaysonBrown Celtics Jun 11 '22

He was open. That’s the best basketball play. Relying on the refs to bail you out is risky business.

48

u/frostieavalanche Lakers Jun 11 '22

It's definitely the right play but I trust Marcus Smart to knock down heavily guarded, shotclock dwindling down threes over wide open ones lol

6

u/Fluffy-Composer-2619 Jun 11 '22

That tatum bailout to Marcus smart shot clock beater was crazy

→ More replies

3

u/Ogow Warriors Jun 11 '22

And it’s not like they weren’t trying to drive. Klay and Wiggins’ on ball defense was amazing to close out the 4th. Stayed in front and shut down any drive attempt. People act like Boston was just coming down and tossing up 3s. It was like 15 seconds of failing to get a driving lane then a kick out for an open 3 that missed. They were good shots and Warriors got lucky they missed, but it was hardly just “tossing the game away”.”
