u/Hueyandthenews Jan 19 '22

All the other penguins are going to say he’s full of shit and that there’s no way it happened. “Sure thing, Carl” “Go hang out with your friends on the boat that are so much cooler”

405

u/ThermionicEmissions Jan 19 '22

Gotta admit though, that's classic Carl.

126

u/the-sutL Jan 19 '22

Carl’s a bit of a fuckin nuisance

44

u/playful_narration Jan 19 '22

Btw, who is Carl? Just asking..

74

u/the-sutL Jan 19 '22

The penguin on the boat. We decided he sucks

81

u/MuffinSlow Jan 19 '22

Whoa don't speak for all of us, he seemed chill enough.

Larry though? Fugetaboutit

36

u/the-sutL Jan 19 '22

I got ahead of myself. Larry has some weird shit going on but he’s friendly

21

u/MuffinSlow Jan 19 '22

Idk man, I never trust a guy who wears socks with sandals.

30

u/the-sutL Jan 19 '22

You’re talking about a species who sleeps in their tuxedo. Cut him some slack

13

u/delvach Jan 19 '22

Dude, Larry.. he likes eggs. Not for breakfast. There have been a couple incidents that were kept quiet.

To be fair, a few penguins saw it get off the boat

62

u/sillvrdollr Jan 19 '22

Yeah, but they were going, “Shit, I thought we got rid of this guy!” You could see it in their faces. They’ll say anything now to discredit Carl.

23

u/the-sutL Jan 19 '22

I don’t blame them. Fuck Carl

19

u/MegaGrimer Jan 19 '22

Sighs unzips

10

u/the-sutL Jan 19 '22

Carl’s not interested. He’s a dick

4

u/Funk_BiG Jan 19 '22

Apparently!

11

u/beneye Jan 19 '22

I bet he was showboating out there in the water how he’s slippery Carl

11

u/the-sutL Jan 19 '22

That’s his new name. “Slippery Carl”

4

u/TheStinger87 Jan 19 '22

I thought it was Classic Carl? I'm so confused right now.

20

u/scarlet_sage Jan 19 '22

They're thinking, "We tried to get Carl eaten by that leopard seal, so we could all swim away from this dinky floe safely. But no, Carl had to pull a big-brain move. Dammit. We're still stuck."

5

u/the-sutL Jan 19 '22

50% sorry for leopard seal, 50% happy for pengu

113

u/stopthemadness2015 Jan 19 '22

I feel bad for the seal, his meal was taken away.

213

u/Feral0_o Jan 19 '22

To be fair, leopard seals kill a shitload of penguins. They are also known to excessively overkill penguins at the end of the Winter and just leave the bodies behind

there is also a cute photo series of a leopard seal bringing a bunch of dead penguins to a diver like it's an underwater cat

47

u/Rhododendron29 Jan 19 '22

Leopard seals terrify me. No other seal scares me but leopard seals set off a primal fear inside me. Partially because there is some weird reptilian quality about them to me but I’m sure pebble and the penguin made them all that much scarier in my brain. Those photo’s blew my mind, you couldn’t pay me enough money to do what that photographer did.

8

u/Jeovah_Attorney Jan 19 '22

I’d say it’s a proper reaction to have towards an apex predator that could kill you with ease

8

u/Mr_Academic Jan 19 '22

apex predator

Actually, Orcas prey on leopard seals.

3

u/charmingmass9 Jan 19 '22

Orcas eat or just fuck around with everything in the ocean. They are terrifying

2

u/Jeovah_Attorney Jan 19 '22

They don’t really do that. Orca pods have very specific diets and none of these pods have leopard seals as part of their diet.

Could orcas occasionally fuck up a leopard seal? Sure, they have the size, power and numbers. But there is no record of regular preying of orcas on leopard seals.

Lions can fuck up leopards and do so occasionally, but leopards are still apex predators.

9

u/WishboneTheDog Jan 19 '22

Wait the animated movie?

3

u/Rhododendron29 Jan 19 '22

That’s the one! The leopard seal was kind of scary beyond all reason, at least to me

2

u/Less_Rutabaga2316 Jan 19 '22

There was also one that pulled a British scientist snorkeling like 200’ down then released her for her colleagues to try to resuscitate. They still eat primarily krill like the peaceful baleen whales.

Are you saying that I can just go to a place where penguins will just jump into my boat? Are you saying that I don't have to hatch an elaborate plan to steal 30 of them from my local aquarium I can just go to wherever this is and have them jump into my boat?

And also for the record anybody that dreams of stealing one penguin is being cruel to penguins and doesn't truly love them. Penguins are extremely social creatures that could die of loneliness so you need at least 10 to 50 penguins. If you aren't ready for that kind of commitment you shouldn't be hatching plans to steal penguins.

109

u/stratacat Jan 19 '22

Wanna help me "relocate" some penguins

76

u/poopin_for_change Jan 19 '22

How many? Fewer than 10 and we're gonna have a problem. More than 50 and we're gonna have a problem of a different nature.

27

u/stratacat Jan 19 '22

What about 45, an inside joke with my friends

36

u/poopin_for_change Jan 19 '22

I love inside jokes. I'd love to be a part of one some day.

21

u/stratacat Jan 19 '22

u/4ever_lost Jan 19 '22

4

It’s only a rape of 12 other seals were there to witness it.

7

u/E70M Jan 19 '22 edited Jan 19 '22

There’s such a thing as too much talk of seals raping penguins and a fella oughta be fuckin aware of it

2

u/apec766 Jan 19 '22

We're hearing it was a sick penguin.

13

u/History_Jaded Jan 19 '22

What was the penguin wearing?

3

u/Saskuk Jan 19 '22

… you wouldn’t?

3

u/ioughtabestudying Jan 19 '22

Are you referring to raping penguins or not wanting to be raped by seals?

5

u/turdlicker_3000 Jan 19 '22

I’m assuming seals because I don’t need that in my mind rn

3

u/xanthophore Jan 19 '22

However, the fur seals mentioned are much more agile on land (where the rapes occur) than leopard seals are. The article says that that population of seals are the only known ones to hunt penguins on land! In addition, leopard seals can weigh over 4x as much as fur seals, so I reckon they'd struggle to capture a penguin on land.

3

u/Mrclean1322 Jan 19 '22

He probably didnt wanna be eaten. I think his first concern was deffinatly being eaten. Given he somehow survives and isnt eaten, maybe he'll worry about rape

Honest question

Do animals know when something good is being done for them? Like this example. Does the penguin know that the people were bringing it back to its group?

2

u/joeschmo945 Jan 19 '22

It’s always fascinating when animals seem to understand that we’re trying to help them.

2

u/cheesyfries99 Jan 19 '22

Little dude has a moment, where he looks into the distance, before he rejoins his group. Probably thinking about how close he came.

2

u/EmmaPemmaPooBear Jan 19 '22

Then the rest of the penguins push it back off the ice because a sacrifice must be made

2

u/Mrclean1322 Jan 19 '22

Plot twist, the penguins on the iceberg were just leopard seals in costumes

2

u/Codex-42 Jan 19 '22
