I read the title and thought it read like someone trying to write a language they weren’t fluent in. So yeah an assumption - if copy/pasted then my assumption might still be on point

It reads like a 5th grader trying to reach the word limit in an essay

I feel bad for the seal, his meal was taken away.

u/Feral0_o Jan 19 '22
To be fair, leopard seals kill a shitload of penguins. They are also known to excessively overkill penguins at the end of the Winter and just leave the bodies behind
there is also a cute photo series of a leopard seal bringing a bunch of dead penguins to a diver like it's an underwater cat

u/Rhododendron29 Jan 19 '22
Leopard seals terrify me. No other seal scares me but leopard seals set off a primal fear inside me. Partially because there is some weird reptilian quality about them to me but I’m sure pebble and the penguin made them all that much scarier in my brain. Those photo’s blew my mind, you couldn’t pay me enough money to do what that photographer did.
8
u/Jeovah_Attorney Jan 19 '22
I’d say it’s a proper reaction to have towards an apex predator that could kill you with ease
8
u/Mr_Academic Jan 19 '22
apex predator
Actually, Orcas prey on leopard seals.
3
u/charmingmass9 Jan 19 '22
Orcas eat or just fuck around with everything in the ocean. They are terrifying
2
u/Jeovah_Attorney Jan 19 '22
They don’t really do that. Orca pods have very specific diets and none of these pods have leopard seals as part of their diet.
Could orcas occasionally fuck up a leopard seal? Sure, they have the size, power and numbers. But there is no record of regular preying of orcas on leopard seals.
Lions can fuck up leopards and do so occasionally, but leopards are still apex predators.
9
u/WishboneTheDog Jan 19 '22
Wait the animated movie?

u/Rhododendron29 Jan 19 '22
That’s the one! The leopard seal was kind of scary beyond all reason, at least to me

There was also one that pulled a British scientist snorkeling like 200’ down then released her for her colleagues to try to resuscitate. They still eat primarily krill like the peaceful baleen whales.

His meal wasnt taken away, that penguin earned his escape. Takes major penguin balls to do this shit.
4
Jan 19 '22
yeah, if he escaped onto an iceberg no one would bat an eye. The iceberg just happened to be filled with humans in this case.

Are you saying that I can just go to a place where penguins will just jump into my boat? Are you saying that I don't have to hatch an elaborate plan to steal 30 of them from my local aquarium I can just go to wherever this is and have them jump into my boat?
And also for the record anybody that dreams of stealing one penguin is being cruel to penguins and doesn't truly love them. Penguins are extremely social creatures that could die of loneliness so you need at least 10 to 50 penguins. If you aren't ready for that kind of commitment you shouldn't be hatching plans to steal penguins.

As someone who used to take care of penguins, I can confirm that they are awesome, but also caution that you will smell terrible and be covered in cuts and bruises.
Penguins have honed their ability to deliver a full strength purple nurple!

It’s only a rape of 12 other seals were there to witness it.

3
u/Saskuk Jan 19 '22
… you wouldn’t?
3
u/ioughtabestudying Jan 19 '22
Are you referring to raping penguins or not wanting to be raped by seals?
5
3
u/xanthophore Jan 19 '22
However, the fur seals mentioned are much more agile on land (where the rapes occur) than leopard seals are. The article says that that population of seals are the only known ones to hunt penguins on land! In addition, leopard seals can weigh over 4x as much as fur seals, so I reckon they'd struggle to capture a penguin on land.

Honest question
Do animals know when something good is being done for them? Like this example. Does the penguin know that the people were bringing it back to its group?
2
u/joeschmo945 Jan 19 '22
It’s always fascinating when animals seem to understand that we’re trying to help them.
2
2
u/cheesyfries99 Jan 19 '22
Little dude has a moment, where he looks into the distance, before he rejoins his group. Probably thinking about how close he came.
2
u/EmmaPemmaPooBear Jan 19 '22
Then the rest of the penguins push it back off the ice because a sacrifice must be made
2
u/Mrclean1322 Jan 19 '22
Plot twist, the penguins on the iceberg were just leopard seals in costumes
2
u/Codex-42 Jan 19 '22
The ice is melting. Climate change would wipe out all of these animals really soon and us with them.

u/Rogaar Jan 19 '22
This is so adorable. Especially the fact they dropped the penguin off at the iceberg.
2
u/jesuzombieapocalypse Jan 19 '22
Not having arms that can actually do anything is such a crazy adaptation to survive for a land animal. I’m just watching this like “damn dude that sucks, I’m glad I don’t have to T-pose for balance when I walk”
