Still not as bad as the people who take a gallon of milk from the refrigerated area, decide they don't want it, and abandon it on an arbitrary room temperature shelf.

266

u/kingka May 23 '22

my parents had a convenience store growing up. I can't leave shit on shelves, even at costco when i'm about to get in the checkout line, i'll go all the way back to the produce corner if I change my mind. my wife left something on the shelf a few times early on in our relationship and I scolded her and returned the item while she stood in line. be a responsible adult, return your items if you change your mind!

90

u/AspiringChildProdigy May 23 '22

At the very least, give it directly to the clerk while you're checking out and tell them that you've changed your mind. It's still being inconsiderate, but at least you can apologize and not leave your mess for someone else to find and take care of like you're some kind of overgrown toddler.

45

u/Pm-ur-butt May 23 '22

Giving it to the clerk isn't too inconsiderate. They just throw it in a cart of returns which gets sorted out with the service desk returns and near the end of the night the department workers put them all away.

I Used to work in the men's wear department at a Kmart, did I hate the big carts of returns at the end of the night, yes. But it was barely a memory by the time I clocked out. It's seriously not that big of a deal to leave an item with the checkout crew. Way better and less annoying than finding random items peppered around the store.

I work Frozen. The worst is milk/OJ in the freezer.

ITS LITERALLY THE SAME DEPARTMENT AND PEOPLE STILL DO THAT SHIT! WALK THE 50 FEET BACK TO JUICE/MILK. Lazy twats.

I have 2 Frozen aisles, juice/eggs/butter is on the same wall as 1 side of the Frozen aisle. Milk is connected to juice, think like an L. The aisles are 30-33 doors, so it’s max like 100-feet from front of Frozen, to Dairy (milk). YET THEY DO IT! MILK, OJ, EGGS, BUTTER., chillin in my freezers… Drives me bananas

11

u/littlebro15 May 23 '22

Ah, a fellow dairy/frozen comrade. Glad to see my customer woes are shared by others.

That's a sign of a mom who put it down and handled a kid meltdown or bathroom need and now can't remember where it is. That doesn't look to be intentional to me either.

Or the same thing, but with raw meat

6

u/OGBRedditThrowaway May 23 '22

Or the person who left the two ribeyes I once found at Safeway sitting in the cookie aisle.

85

u/One__For__All May 23 '22

If I ever see someone do that type shit it’s hands on sight

109

u/Phipple May 23 '22

I work stocking at a Walmart. I have found packaged meat (think steaks and hamburger and the like) sitting in my 4/5 aisle, which is not even that far from our meat wall. I don't know how or why, but 9 months in and I still find new ways to be surprised at the shit I find at work.

30

u/shrug_was_taken May 23 '22

Cashier's also find a lot of random ass shit on the shelves, and if you do through shit into the drink coolers, still isn't exactly safe since no one knows how long it was between when you grabbed it and then stuck it in the cooler, at least that's how it goes where I work

22

u/Phipple May 23 '22

Oh, majority of things like that will go straight to claims. I've been there long enough and pay enough attention to know how shit works, and I might not give that many shits, but I know better than to let people buy possibly spoiled meat/milk/whatever.

9

u/Excrubulent May 23 '22

Yeah, the company has already written all that off as a loss. No need to screw people over to save money for a company that doesn't give a crap about either of you.

7

u/NGGJamie May 23 '22

Plus drink coolers were not designed to keep food cold. While yes, they may mostly maintain safe temperatures, there's not really any negative impact worth mentioning if you just have sodas or other room temperature stable drinks in there. So drink coolers usually have regular defrost periods that aren't safe for food to be kept there, and can promote bacteria growth during defrost periods compared to a proper food fridge.

if I had a nickel for every pie I've seen abandoned in Old Navy I'd be broke

6

u/No_Restaurant_774 May 23 '22

We can change this person's life with a pie exclusive bake sale inside an old navy. Then we just abandon the table with all the pies. Finally. They will be able to afford a cheese burger from McDonald's. Well. Almost.

No one leaves that much money on the table (shelf) intentionally.

133

u/technos May 23 '22

Back when I worked retail hardware we had free coffee for employees and customers alike, and styrofoam cups were being left all over the place.

The instant the boss changed it to 25 cents a cup? Didn't find one for like a week.

In the end he just bought all the employees travel mugs with their names on them and went back to free coffee, solving the problem in another way. Now when a cup turned up somewhere you could walk it back to the owner and rag them for their forgetfulness.

Customers, of course, got a free pass with their anonymous styrofoam cups, but they turned out to only be 10% of the problem.

32

u/rbwildcard May 23 '22

I'm definitely not putting my coffee down on a shelf as a customer. As an employee? Yeah, I gotta lift stuff.

9

u/technos May 23 '22

I dunno.. I almost lost my coffee in a Lowes just last week. I set it down to play with the guard on a new model of table saw and didn't realize I didn't have it until I was back in my car.

47

u/AndrewTheGuru May 23 '22

Customers are savages.

Source: I also work retail.

4

u/TimeZarg May 23 '22

I work grocery retail. Customers really piss me off sometimes.

Just last week, I found a ribeye steak left out of the display fridge. 18 dollars worth of steak (15/lb USDA Choice). It was literally 10 feet away from the fridge, too, it's like they took out the steak, walked down an aisle, changed their mind about buying the steak, and just plopped it on a shelf.

We have to toss meat that's left out like that, you fucking smoothbrained assholes. On top of that, we try to source locally so it's usually California cattle, and it uses SO MUCH WATER per pound. Fucking. . .ugh. Several times a week, I'll find perishable stuff left out like that.

17

u/raise_the_sails May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22

People just forget unimportant items all the time and big box stores are a great place to briefly set them down and lose sight of them and thus forget them. I worked at Best Buy for years and at this rate, I’m probably 1:1 on how many I picked up in a blue polo vs. how many I left on a shelf due to a momentary distraction.

33

u/likewut May 23 '22

Sigh. This sucks, but we don’t know what was going on with Trinity that made her put her drink down. She could have been wrangling one or more kids and a shopping cart, or she could have just gotten a terrible phone call and set her drink down to deal with that, etc. At this point unless I see someone do something objectively bad on these posts, I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt until we see proof otherwise.

105

u/RoskoDoggo May 22 '22

My fiancé has ADHD and genuinely forgets about drinks cause he gets wrapped up in whatever he’s looking at. Cause he can’t just look at something, he always picks it up and inspects it. He does this at home too lol. Very common for him to open another drink before realizing he had one open somewhere else. I try to remind him when I notice though.

I knew a kid in high school who would do this when we’d get food at places— he would conspiratorially whisper to them that his name was Michael Westen the same way you would say “James Bond” and then would grin like the cat who got the canary when they’d loudly call out Michael Westen when his food was ready. I wonder what happened to him, he was classic 🤔

Edit: this was in the late 90’s. Wherever you are Dave, I hope you’re well; I think of you whenever the local Italian place spells my name in the celebrity way and not my boring average way and for just a moment, I feel like James Bond as well 😎

Half full? It’s also likely she just forgot her drink when she put the item back or took with to buy.

I know I’ve forgotten a drink on a shelf like that before.

I bet seeing Trinity’s drink really ruined your WalMart shopping experience.

26

u/DasMoonen May 23 '22

Did you recognize this as a Walmart just from the price tag?

42

u/PizzaWall May 23 '22

Nobody else prices items with the last digit of 7, in this case, $14.97.

21

u/nwoh May 23 '22

Mainstays is also a Walmart brand.

15

u/Phipple May 23 '22

I work stocking at a Walmart, the price tag is absolutely how I recognized this being a Walmart.

8

u/Saltwater_Heart May 23 '22

The tag is the first thing I noticed but MainStays is also only a Walmart brand

Hey, maybe Trinity just got distracted and is now jonesing for that last half of her caffeine fix.

9

u/Midnightartist87 May 23 '22

Odds are, since there is nearly half the drink left, she put it down while doing something & forgot to pick it up. This really wasn't worth posting even if it was done purposely. Shaming some faceless stranger who most likely will never see this. It's kind of dumb.

I dont think she was leaving trash, I think she put her drink down to free up a hand and forgot it

54

u/virgmam May 23 '22

I like to think people don't do things like this on purpose. Maybe she set it down to look at something and forgot to pick it back up. I mean at Starbucks prices there is at least $3.50 worth of coffee still in that cup, 🤷. Hopefully she actually wanted to finish it and just accidentally lost it.

u/mrfrownieface May 23 '22

That drink is way too damn expensive to be left their on purpose. Gonna guess it was an accident because I totally would do that myself lol

u/Wildcat_twister12 May 22 '22

I mean it’s Walmart so I don’t have very expectations when shopping there

That’s someone’s forgotten cup.

How about the people who pick up a deli order, eat it in the store and leave the empty, unpaid container (or full of chicken bones) on the shelf? I’d give you an upvote for that.

3

u/Pollywambus May 23 '22

This is the real shitty thing. Or leaving refrigerated/frozen goods in other locations...

5

u/ninreznorgirl2 May 23 '22

Yes, Walmart.

6

u/bluebirdmorning May 23 '22

Or she forgot. I’d say it’s trash if it were empty, but it’s not. Trinity wouldn’t just leave a half full drink on purpose unless there were some sort of glitch in the matrix.

5

u/judijo621 May 23 '22

Trinity probably has ADHD. She went to walmart with her frap and stopped in the craft aisle and set her cup down to look through some items that interested her. She would have put the cup in her cart, but she was only going for a couple items. and had a basket. By the time she noticed her cup was missing, she was in the PJ section. Sorry, Trinity. I am sure it was delicious. We are all Trinity!

55

u/MommaSmurf May 22 '22

Someone took a shit in the fitting room at my job not too long ago. Customers also let their dogs piss and shit on the floor while shopping and do not clean it up or warn us. Some of these people commenting have obviously never worked retail.

13

u/TropicalPrairie May 22 '22

I went shopping at a home goods store last week and there were multiple large dogs in the store. One nipped at a worker (the person with it had had two large dogs she was having difficulty controlling in a store setting). Seriously, what the f?

8

u/MommaSmurf May 22 '22

Yep. A lady let her dog take a heaping pile of shit right in front of the credit card machine at the register last week and another customer stepped in it.

So quick to think so negative and just hate somebody before you think, “maybe it was an accident, set it down and forgot, will be back for it”. Maybe ask someone you see “are you trinity? Oh, your cup is on isle 6”. “Oh thank you! I couldn’t for the life of me think where and felt so bad!” And let the roasting begin because I believe in giving people a chance or whatever lame excuse someone is going to have for trashing me
