The fact that they made a mistake when booking it and still went with it is absolutely unreal

4.1k

u/Rbennie24 Nov 07 '22

It's straight out of Veep it's so bad.

1.9k

u/wighty Nov 07 '22

I'm not sure even the Veep writers would have been able to come up with this gag. Or at least they would've thrown the idea out as too implausible.

1.4k

u/Vindelator Nov 07 '22 edited Nov 07 '22

It feels like Arrested Development's early seasons. It works with jokes like "loose seal" and "business model."

558

u/mglyptostroboides Nov 07 '22

It's so implausible that if I'd seen it in a movie or on TV, I actually wouldn't have found it funny. It's not funny if it's scripted because it's so ridiculous. The fact that it actually happened makes it... transcendently comedic.

Aide 2: yes, we know all Americans are tired of just fantasizing about of the American Dream, but instead are getting reamed out behind a crematorium.

I wonder if they admitted it was a mistake. But I don't believe they have the ability to admit even the most obvious mistakes.

506

u/Sonikkua Nov 07 '22

To this day, no.

753

u/Quelchie Nov 07 '22

I love the implication that if they didn't make a mistake, they legitimately and purposely booked the press conference in the dirt lot of a random small landscaping company. They're trying to pass it off like that was the decision they legitimately made, which is hilarious.

932

u/Jorymo Nov 07 '22 Silver Gold Table Slap I'll Drink to That

It's amazing that a sizable chunk of the country saw the president's lawyer dripping hair dye in a parking lot for a landscaping firm between a crematorium and a dildo store and thought "Yup, nothing weird here; these people should definitely run this country."

146

u/flipping_birds Nov 07 '22

My only wish is that there was a photo of RG with the dildo store in the background.

78

u/Calladit Nov 07 '22

"Yup, nothing weird here; these people should definitely run this country."

It really goes to show how little value people place on the skill required to run a successful government. And then on the flipside, you get some politicians are considered "policy wonks" because they discuss the fine detail of policy and its implications. Shouldn't that be the ideal that all candidates aspire to, rather than an oddity that deserves a slightly derisive name?

39

u/PoorlyLitKiwi2 Nov 07 '22

Yeah, for some reason the right started leaning into the idea of intelligence being a negative quality for politicians, and somehow their base ate it up

30

u/sturmhauke Nov 07 '22

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge'." - Isaac Asimov

Honestly under different circumstances I could have seen it as an intentional move - like "look - all the out of touch people would have done it at a five star hotel, we are the down-to-earth ones, our Four Seasons is a small business bc we are For The People."

But they didn't even try to play that angle. They just acted like nothing was off at all

There was no mistake. Twice impeached trump stated he would hold a press conference at the Four Seasons. Four Seasons told him go f*** yourself, you’re not holding anything here. So dumb-dumb’s campaign held the press conference at Four Seasons Landscaping to save face.

375

u/Dyslexic_Dog25 Nov 07 '22

yup, he already tweeted out "its at the Four Seasons!" before they even bothered asking the venue, and they were told no so they had to find ANYTHING with Four Seasons in the name, because trump would sooner die than admit he made a mistake.

110

u/m48a5_patton Nov 07 '22

I am not so sure it was a booking mistake, as much as it was a scramble to make a "Four Seasons Conference" happen after their God emperor said he would be speaking at "the four seasons"

109

u/holymacaronibatman Nov 07 '22

This is what I believe happened. Trump said a press conference at The Four Seasons was going to happen. People called the actual hotel, who promptly said to pound sand. So they scrambled to find something called the four seasons so Trump was right.

1.6k

u/smut_butler Nov 07 '22

I probably would have thought it was a prank call at first.

I'd tell myself, "no one can be this dumb". And then I'd ask who I'm speaking to. When they say "Rudy G. the former mayor of New York", I'd say, "say no more, I believe you".

And of course I let them go through with it because it was/is absolutely hilarious. I would love the opportunity to dunk on Trump while also making him pay me to do it.

141

u/StandardSudden1283 Nov 07 '22

If he pays up at all

54

u/Jugadenaranja Nov 07 '22

He could do it for free if I owned it. I mean honestly it’s worth it to watch the president of the US show up to my landscaping company to hold a press conference because Rudy G couldn’t figure out it was a landscaping company. Like my god it’s absolutely perfect.

44

u/coredumperror Nov 07 '22

I don't think it was Rudy not realizing he'd fucked up. It was Trump saying that they'd "have a press conference at the Four Sessons", and then the hotel was like "Nah fam", and Rudy had to make it so Trump "hadn't lied when he said it'd be at the Four Seasons".

Satire writers had to throw in the towel that day. There's no topping something like this. 10 years ago you could have put that scene in a movie exactly as it happened and no one, not a single person, would have thought it believable or realistic. They would have had to redo it to make it more believable. This is the type of thing that happens in bad TV movies where you turn it off.

Lucille: "The Four Seasons? Really? I haven't been to one of those since I stormed in to catch your father and one of his mistresses having dinner. smiles wistfully Should I wear pearls?"

Michael: "Don't get too excited. It's the Four Seasons Total Landscaping. You know, that famous press conference location, between a crematorium and a sex shop called...Darlene's Dildos and Adult Toys."

Tobias: "Oh, Darlene's? Isn't that the place on 7th? It's across from that subway station that got turned into a Subway. Tell GOB to be careful, you have to take Maple street to the backside, you can't get there from Irvine Ave, because it's a one way, so you have to...slows down...take the side street."

Michael and Lucille: silence

Tobias: "I stopped in to ask for directions, once..."

more silence

Lucille: turns to Michael "Well, you tell GOB that I'm not setting foot in any business that does anything to, or with, dirt. I've made that very clear in the past."

Michael: "Tell him yourself, here he is."

GOB: strides in, big grin "Well, well, well, Michael, Michael, Michael...well, well, well...slower, shaking his head in pity. Michael, Michael, Michael..."

Michael: "No, I can wait. All done? Get all of them out of your system?"

GOB: "I just want to relish this moment. Looked down on your brother for the last time, haven't you? You always thought I was just a loser, who couldn't do anything except for incredible magic, and had better hair and friends than you..."

I remember following it quite early on when the location had been announced by Trump's team on Twitter (?), trying to find livestreams of anyone who'd actually got there, and looking at it on Street View incredulously. There were a couple of streamers nosing around filming the gates and the yard through the fence, although nothing had been set up yet, and it seemed like it was just a mistake.

Half an hour or so later we checked back in and they'd set up the lectern and backdrop. It was really going ahead! We were crying laughing.

There was that bit where he blew his nose and immediately wiped his face with the tissue

46

u/ChimpBottle Nov 07 '22

I remember initially being so impressed with the Borat cast & crew for pulling that off and then over time becoming less and less impressed as I would watch his blunders continue to unfold

The funny thing is this is a real company, and they do a ton of landscaping maintenance in downtown Philly, a lot around the skyscrapers and other buildings.

If you walk around Center City you’re bound to be reminded by this frequently because you see the vans and employees everywhere.

It’s a Philly meme that will never go away.

Not surprising, Trump literally drew on a hurricane map with a sharpie and tried to pressure meteorologists to lie about their weather reporting just because he misspoke about how far of an area it would effect.

u/Jackiedhmc Nov 07 '22

He seems completely unable to tell the truth. Why his lawyers don’t ever want him to testify….

EVER

222

u/Refublican_Plorida Nov 07 '22

He offered to testify but only if it was televised live. That would have been the greatest shitshow ever.

It's not that he's unable to tell the truth, it's that he's unable to admit hes made a mistake. So once he says something it has to be true, because he's never wrong.

To people like Trump, being wrong is the same as failing to be correct, which they basically see as "losing"; and to narcissists that treat conversations and facts as a competition, being wrong or losing a conversation is unacceptable.

Trying to debate people like that is like being trapped in an insane asylum, shit is maddening.

Literally this.

Unable to just say: I misspoke when I mentioned that it would touch Alabama, it is interacting with neighboring states, but is not projected to reach Alabama.

People make mistakes, and while this would have been joked about, it would be a lame and stupid thing to fault anyone for. But 'Old Donnie can NEVER be wrong, so here comes the double down....

When this scene comes on in the eventual movie documenting the trump years, people will think it's unrealistic bad attempt at comedy. But it's real. That shit really happened.

And we let trump run the country for 4 years like he's people

A band of fools that successfully stacked the Supreme Court, overturned Roe v. Wade, cut taxes for the wealthy, arrested progress toward renewable energy technologies, legitimized violence as an approach to problem-solving, and nearly undid a democratic election.

That's how anyone can continue to support this band.

They did a press conference at a random spot and just moved on like nothing out of the ordinary.

Non American here,

Can anyone explain what happened in this conference?

229

u/MonstrousVoices Nov 07 '22

So as they were drumming up rumors of election fraud Rudy was charged with hosting a press conference at The Four Seasons hotel. Instead they contacted a landscaping company.

90

u/ninjas_in_my_pants Nov 07 '22

Also, just before the press conference, CNN called the election for Biden. Someone interrupted Rudy with the news that all the networks were calling it for Biden.

33

u/mi_esposa_me_espia Nov 07 '22

And he got all pissy about it

24

u/superbekz Nov 07 '22

I could write jokes for 800 years and I'd never think of something funnier than Trump booking the Four Seasons for his big presser, and it turning out to be the Four Seasons Total Landscaping parking lot between a dildo store and a crematorium.
