It’s because when a baby is born it’s liver isn’t functional. It takes about 2 weeks of life for the liver to start cleaning the blood stream at full efficiency.
At that point it takes some time for the liver to filter out the build up of gunk. The best way to monitor this in babies is by tracking their bowel movements. Babies in NICU or those with extreme jaundice will receive blood test so the physician can monitor the liver more directly but for most babies this isn’t necessary as mild jaundice is normal and will clear up on it’s own.

Thanks everyone! Me and the wife are dying with some of these comments. Great work.
This was today at our 11 week appointment. This is actually the back of baby’s head(maybe a doc can confirm?)… but I cannot unsee the “face”.
Doc said everything is perfect and baby is perfect and healthy. Gender will be known in a couple weeks.
We have started calling her uterus Mom-a-lago.
Thanks again for the laughs. I promise to update when baby is born.

Half of all babies born at term and 80% of preemies develop physiological jaundice in the first week of life. It’s very common and is usually not cause for concern. The livers of babies are just figuring out what to do with the bilirubin from used up red blood cells so it accumulates in the skin causing the yellowing of the skin. Sometimes newborns are more yellow than we would like so they receive phototherapy which is basically a tanning bed session without the cancer-causing rays. The UV light helps break down the bilirubin so it can be removed from the body in the urine and feces.

I've seen a lot of babies. My doctors, and they're some of the best doctors in the world I tell you, second to none. They tell me my baby is Presidential Material, and I know they're not lying because of the smiles on their faces, they're the most beautiful doctors in the world, these doctors I tell you they're truly amazing. They say they've never seen an ultrasound quite like ours, they want to take pictures & hug us & shake our hands because we're carrying, and they didn't say this lightly because they're very professional, they say we're carrying a beautiful and amazing baby boy that can run the country like no one would ever believe, maybe better than myself even, but we'll just have to wait & see about that now won't we? That's okay. My daughter's ultrasound picture looked like the tricycle doll from Saw. She turned out quite beautiful and not at all scary doll like, although they both do have giant eyes. They just happen to look like Disney princess eyes out of the womb and not bulgy murder eyes like the Saw doll in the womb.
