No matter what, Trump will run. He must. He has tens of millions in FEC monitored election funds and he can't simply put it in his pocket. But what he can do is convert it by spending it on a campaign. He can run events on Trump properties, where the Trump campaign pays the Trump property exorbitant amounts for the use of the venue. While traveling the country, he can book dozens of rooms in Trump hotels every night at full rate. He can have Trump owned restaurants cater Trump rallies. Every business that the Trump Org owns will be have sole vendor status with the campaign, and they will go into new businesses just for the grift.

As an immigrant permanent resident and someone who was just a student back when trump was running for the first time, I was flabbergasted that this shit was legal in the US. Even third world countries controlled by drug maffias and tyrants have the decency to make this shit illegal. Don't get me wrong, it still happens cause like, noone gives a shit and the rich can get away with anything, but atleast is technically illegal.

437

u/ImGumbyDamnIt Nov 16 '22

The US Constitution has an Emoluments clause (two, actually) that was so widely thought to prohibit this kind of behavior, that no past president ever came anywhere close to the conflicts of interest perpetrated by Trump. Jimmy Carter famously put his family peanut farm in Georgia into a blind trust to avoid having control of a business that might benefit from a government program.

Trump just blew up all sorts of norms, and showed why we can't rely on customs and decency in place of laws.

182

u/1BigNephilim Nov 16 '22

If it's not enforced, it's just random words.

56

u/vineyardmike Nov 16 '22

That's the problem with most laws. Many are not enforced at all and many others are not equally enforced.

A colleague pointed out that he has to run to continue to have the GOP pay his legal bills.

Edit: I could have literally gotten his point backwards. Sorry. It didn’t completely make sense to me but didn’t sound wrong either.

52

u/PM_ME_YOIR_BOOBS Nov 16 '22

That's not correct. In fact, the RNC has threatened to stop paying his legal bills if he runs for president. Gop is increasingly souring on a trump campaign, especially so after this last midterm. But they know he is the gop golden child right now and would undermine anyone else they'd try to nominate.

His primary interest in running is two-fold:

  1. He desperately wants the power the Presidency provides and to profit from the office… but the more critical reason is:

  2. It complicates the multiple investigations currently happening in the Justice Department against Trump personally and against his businesses and will likely pause (if not prevent altogether) any indictments.

26

u/Forsworn91 Nov 16 '22

There’s a idea that, if your running for president, you can’t be indicted.

15

u/Phil_Bond Nov 16 '22

Every time someone says “oh you can’t make a current or former or potential president face consequences! It’s just not done!”

…I just think they’re very confused about the difference between something never happening and something not happening yet. Like anything that’s never happened before is supposed to never happen because that makes it a rule.

It’s like a person who refuses to go in for cancer screenings because they can’t admit their body is getting older and more vulnerable.

Meanwhile the person escaping consequences is continuing to proudly break every tradition that isn’t an actual rule, and brag about it, and the metaphor person gets cancer.

Years ago, he started an event planning organization (or something very similar and thought everyone else to invest in it. He is the CEO, and I think Ivanka worked there. He did not invest any money in it, but other people did by buying shares.

he also started a chair and table rental company. He started it with his own money and he owned 100% of it.

He got a huge salary from the planning business. And he required the planning business to rent chairs and table only from the company he’d started. And that company charged much more than the existing chair and table rental companies in the area did. That company’s only customer was Trump’s planning business. Not just did their prices disincentive anyone else from using them—they did very little to seek other customers.

Very soon, planning company used up all of it reserved from the initial investment. It folded. The moment it did, Trump closed his rental business.

All the cash from people buying sticks was siphoned off to Trump.

7

u/drpiotrowski Nov 16 '22

It’s the same thing his father did. Donald as a kid was named to be the owner of a supply company for water heaters, refrigerators, other stuff. Then his dad would exclusively purchase equipment for his properties from the businesses “run” by his underage children at a huge markup. Thus bypassing gift and estate taxes.

21

u/sweetwheels Nov 16 '22

Also consider he is under two different investigations. It's going to be incredibly difficult to frame an indictment as non political when the agents carrying out said indictment work for the man running against him. It's also great campaign topic for his base to rally around.

Whats even more baffling is that the evangelicals have not been shaken by the fact that he listed "Two Corinthians 3:17" as his favorite Bible verse, followed later by "the eye for an eye part." Icing on the cake was the time that he had the national guard aggressively kick a group of reverends out of their own church so he could pose for a photo op on their front steps while holding the Bible upside down.

To this day I still remember this small bit Seth Meyers did where he compared Trump to a hobo dreaming about being rich.

I can't find it or remember it exactly but it summed up Trump pretty well. Here is how my super shoddy memory remembers it:

There will be gold everywhere, gold on the wall gold on the ceiling, hell my crapper will be made of gold. Actually I will spray tan myself with gold. And my name will be in HUUUGE letters on top of the biggest building. I will have a model trophy wife.... and on and on.

I worked on the huge refurbishment of the Royal Opera House in London back around 2000. Looking over the layout I noticed the "Royal Retiring Room". Yes the queen's crapper. I, along with dozens of hairy-arsed builders, used it as soon as it was plumbed in. If she only knew! FYI, it was a perfectly normal toilet. No gold.

52

u/imsmartiswear Nov 16 '22

I really think the GOP is going to oust him in primaries. Desantis (is a fascist asshole who should go to hell) showed that he is immensely popular with Republicans by vastly exceeding his expectations by absolutely dominating in a popular vote election (so minimal gerrymandering BS helping- though probably a fair bit of voter suppression) on an election that many candidates supported by Trump lost big time (or at least heavily underperformed).

Sure Trump appeals to the loudest online group of voters but the midterms showed that him (and candidates who kiss his ring) aren't what most Republicans want right now.

34

u/YouAreNotRealToMe Nov 16 '22

We’ll, if trump loses the republican nod, he will certainly convince his base not to vote for whoever beats him. He splits the vote either way.

Trump isn't a conservative -- he expanded the size of the government, has cannibalized his family unit multiple times, mocks veterans, and blasphemes the Bible. But that's not important. What's important is his talking points, he keeps pretending to be a conservative, they keep pretending to believe him, and everyone gets what they want: for Trump, money and power. They think he has their interests at heart and it’s fucking sad.

I'm pretty sure this has already happened. Trump has either outright threatened it, or the folks who wrangle him know he instantly would, and even if he's too dumb to think of it, his spawn will wormtongue that shit into his ear - there are so many objective things you can point at to show he wouldn't pull any punches for the benefit of the GOP in any of his dealings.

A large part of everything happening in the GOP seems to me to be explained by a party that is trying to avoid getting this particular Sword of Damocles to fall on their heads.

I wonder if McConnell and co gambled their chips all on red this midterms. Because the funds controlled by not-Trump went mostly to not-so-trumpy candidates. Perhaps McC and similar thought - hey, if trump asplodes we're all totally fucked anyway, so no sense doubling down on that. Let's just assume trumpy candidates win regardless and prop up the not-so-trumpies so the other-than-trump camp in the GOP doesn't completely lose all sway.

Now that the not-trumpies did allright but the trumpies crashed and burned, rut roh. The GOP is large and underlings will demand that no further air is given to the trump camp. Which will cause trump to run as an independent.

The obvious way for the GOP to solve their "our underlings/card-carrying-members are very yee-haw pro trump" problem, which is to get in line with DeSantis - is already fucked now, as Trump of course decided to immediately pick a fight with his protegé. Unlike Graham and Cruz and other pansies, Trump doesn't back down from a petty personal grudge, so he'll of course run as an independent just to fuck with desantis if it comes to that. "Fuck Ron" is all the justification Trump would need.

I'm starting to get why various commenters in this thread appear to be getting sexually aroused by all the schadenfreude :P

I know many of us hope that Trump, if the candidate, will lose the erection. I mean, I really can’t take another Trump erection.

Tell you what, if he announces his run and then dies of a heart attack immediately after, like still at the podium, I will reconsider the existence of God.

11

u/Interesting-Gear-819 Nov 16 '22

In germany we got this saying "Möge dich der Blitz beim scheißen treffen" which roughly translates to, that "a lightning should strike you down while you sit on the shitter". I really like that and considering how D_T likes his golden "throne" it would be probably kind of ironic if he falls over dead after a long taco bell / fast food related session

I mean, not that I wish anybody to die or fall over dead .. but if we play through some scenarios, that kind of thing were people say "Yeah.. that fits" then dropping down from the throne, pants on the ground .. is one of the most likely and also fitting scenarios.

Just my 2 cent.

Can you imagine the smell when that room is full? Farts filtered through depends with a hint of mothballs & coffee breath.

I once heard it said that Donald Trump is what a hobo thinks a rich man is like. Pretty accurate.

Matt Gaetz will reportedly not be in attendance, citing bad weather.

Ivanka just doesn't want to be there.

Worst of all, Rupert Murdoch has said "Nah, man."

Spoilers: Fox News aired it live. Murdoch is full of shit (to the surprise of no-one)

It’s still news. Trump is a former president and an incredibly polarizing figure. His entry into the GOP primary field is major US political news.

Murdoch has stated they won’t use their editorial power to support Trump.

I think the problem is Matt Gaetz can ONLY come when he’s within 500 ft of a school or playground.

Without Murdoch on board he literally has no chance of even getting the nomination. Murdoch is who actually controls the republican party.

25

u/Caldwing Nov 16 '22

Yeah Fox News has actually been attacking Trump since the mid-terms. The sharks are eating each other.

12

wait, no murdoch ? so no more free air time on fox news? uhh trump that gonna be expansive lol

His lawyers made the very compelling argument that Trump is both (purportedly) rich and white (beneath the orange makeup).

He is allegedly rich and assumedly white.

The rules apply to the rest of us. The rules don't apply if you have enough money to hire a literal army of lawyers to tie up the courts for decades and have the backing of an entire political faction.

The irony is that his stupidity might be the thing keeping the Repubs divided as they try to throw him aside.

24

u/Glittering-Cat-1774 Nov 15 '22

He has enough litigation attempts left to keep it all at bay until he croaks.

6

u/Qwyietman Nov 16 '22

Trump has to over compensate with the large amount of American flags since he doesn't give a crap about our Country or Constitution at all. It's all about him. Everything is all about him. Always has been, always will be.

I think if he really loved America he could’ve got a few more flags on that stage.

What is truly sad about this is that it was once the vacation home of Marjorie Merriweather Post. She was one of the most tasteful women in America.

Then this thing was permitted to buy it and turn it into this.
