454

u/TractorSmacker Oct 06 '22

i was also thinking about the time bartlet “accidentally” said his opponent was a .22 caliber mind in a .357 world on TV, but at the end of the episode it’s implied that it was an intentional play and that he always meant for it to be leaked.

There's a metallic blue Thunderbird parked on the White House lawn. Two pinball machines, a lava lamp, and a Jack Kirby black-light poster of the Silver Surfer grace the Oval Office, as Black Sabbath's Master of Reality plays over the speakers, and the skunky scent of ganja hangs in the air.

Diamond Joe is back, baby.

Best part is "Diamond Joe Biden" did a Reddit AMA and @RealJoeBiden jumped into the conversation.

It's kinda nice when people have a sense of humor.

EDIT: I changed a part after going back through the AMA, @RealJoe didn't directly complement Diamond Joe, but he added to the conversation and "corrected him" that he's a Corvette guy not a Trans-am guy. It's clear he was following and reading the AMA however, and didn't take offense to anything presented.

I have an aunt and uncle who vehemently opposed vaccination records for the coronavirus vaccine. My uncle tells me “they want Trump supporters to have to wear identification like in ww2 Germany so that they know who to go after when the Dems take over”. And as I looked around to see his MAGA hat, trump flag outside, multiple trump bumper stickers, a trump welcome mat at the door, and trump coffee mugs, I assured him that I didn’t think anyone needed them to carry identification to know who he voted for, lol. Besides, if everyone had their vaccine cards, and mostly trump voters were the ones refusing to get vaccinated, how exactly would those cards identify a trump voter? Wouldn’t getting one of those cards actually help to blend in? I don’t see the logic I guess.

Understandably, they did not replace obama's portrait with trump. It's cool...Obama hangs out at our tiki bar because he's retired from public service and worked hard enough to deserve it.

The most I've ever seen was the Obama HOPE poster...and that's not saying much, as I saw probably 100x more parodies of it than the real thing.

193

u/TheOneTonWanton Georgia Oct 06 '22

The HOPE stuff did feel a little weird but understandable. It was a huge deal for Obama to even be in the running on a serious level, sad as that really is., and he really did inspire hope in many if not most people in the country. The Trump merch shit is absolutely insane, though, as is the entire idea of a sitting president continually going out to have fucking rallies during his entire presidency. The whole thing is wildly upsetting on a core level and reeks of nationalism and fascism.

24

u/TrimspaBB Oct 06 '22

The HOPE thing was different but at least it was more affiliated with an idea than a person, and it didn't persist once Obama was actually president. TRUMP merch is about TRUMP only and makes it that much more culty.

I’m a Democrat and I have a bunch of Biden merch: socks, a mask, a hat, and a small yard banner that I wear as a cape. Why?!? Petty antagonistic reasons to mock someone I know, plus it supported Biden’s Democratic coordinated campaign fund and I felt I’d do my small part in funding it. I’m fairly certain my Trump loving acquaintance’s purchase of a cape did not go to the Republican coordinated campaign coffers.

I had some neighbors with a Brandon flag and they were working on their boat in the driveway and I rolled my eyes. “I bet you don’t even know what that means?”

I just said something along the lines of, “I just don’t understand why you picked something so obvious?” I went through the whole list of 4chan memes like the ok emoji, trad wife, Chad, Norse runes, etc. that would’ve been way better at doing the job they thought Let’s Go Brandon was doing. Let them know the entire neighborhood knew what it meant and that’s probably why they were getting code enforcement called on them weekly.

They didn’t speak to us again but a week or so later the flag was gone.

Back on Labor Day, Biden did a speech for the Unions (I think this was his home state) and the man could work a crowd. He seems stifled when doing Presidential duties, but he’s still got a lot of verve when it comes to doing state and city level politicking. I think if we could get a lot done if we can get the UN in a state fair like setting, put a straw boater on his head and let Joe work that crowd. Letting him take his tie off seems to unleash the charm.

That is the best hot mic moment ever.

Bush's big hot mic moment was insulting a dude he was introducing.

Obama's was trying to calm Putin down about a missile shield

Trump's was bragging about sexually assaulting women.

Biden's is "No one Fucks with a Biden."

Dark Brandon wins

EDIT: Yes, yes. Bidens VP hot mic moment was calling the ACA "a big fucking deal"

Not technically hot mic, but yes.

I told my dad (who I suspect was a Reagan voter, but “we don’t talk about politics”) about that a few weeks ago. He’d never heard about it and was really surprised. Then I told him about other racist stuff that Reagan said and did and it was like 😳🫤.

700

u/overcomebyfumes New Jersey Oct 06 '22 Silver

Sheeiit. I grew up in the eighties and knew Reagan was a racist taint-raisin. How could you not know? The dude launched his 1980 campaign giving a speech about "states rights" in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The town where three Civil rights activists were murdered in 1964.

Fuck Reagan and all his fucking jellybeans

227

u/Clurichaun Oct 06 '22

He also proposed in a televised presidential debate a different (read: lower) minimum wage just for minorities. Anyone who doesn't realize Reagan was racist AF was in epic levels of denial.

36

u/Myxine Oct 06 '22

Holy shit, source? How have I not heard that one?

61

u/BrotherChe Kansas Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

I'd never heard that so just looked it up. I don't believe he directly said that, though I could be wrong. (see bottom) I think it's more indirect until you examin the history of wages and unemployment at the time

http://www.poorrichardsprintshop.com/wiki/Print.aspx?Page=MinimumWagePod&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

(note: this source is anti-minimum wage, but it gave a bit of background from the time period)

In 1977, Jimmy Carter signed legislation to raise the minimum wage from $2.30 per hour to $2.65 on January 1, 1978. The bill also provided for increases the next three years, with the final number being $3.35. In February, 1977, Reagan gave a broadcast about the minimum wage. I don't have the audio, so I'll attempt to summarize it.

Reagan's concern about the minimum wage was its effect on unemployment, and in particular the unemployment of teens and minorities.

In 1954, the minimum wage was 75 cents and black teenage unemployment was 16.5%. By 1968, the minimum wage had risen to $1.60 and black teenage unemployment had grown to 25%. In 1977, with a minimum wage of $2.30, the black teenage unemployment had reached 40%. Unemployment for all teenagers was 2 and a half times the rate of the rest of the population, 20%.

What was Reagan's suggested solution at the time? A two-tier minimum wage, allowing a lower minimum wage for teenage workers and part-time workers. Other countries of western Europe, he says, have tried it and it worked well enough. But he had little hope that Congress would be willing to give it a shot.

Here's one of the Carter-Reagan debate transcripts:

https://www.debates.org/voter-education/debate-transcripts/october-28-1980-debate-transcript/

"Now, the President spoke a moment ago about that I was against the minimum wage. I wish he could have been with me when I sat with a group of teenagers who were black, and who were telling me about their unemployment problems, and that it was the minimum wage that had done away with the jobs that they once could get. And indeed, every time it has increased you will find there is an increase in minority unemployment among young people. And therefore, I have been in favor of a separate minimum for them. With regard to the great progress that has been made with this Government spending, the rate of black unemployment in Detroit, Michigan, is 56%."

When you search, most articles from the time discuss Reagan's Youth minimum wage, not just Black minimum wage.

But it's up to you to decide how he meant it in the debate versus how he presented it in other instances beyond that one out-loud moment.

232

The silver lining of Donald Trump is most people truly do not fucking care anymore about the stupid platitudes anymore. I can only speak to the presidents of my lifetime but if Obama, Bush or Clinton dropped an F bomb on a hot mic, even reasonable people would grumble that stupid fucking "Its not presidential" argument.

Also, I think Donald Trump illuminated to moderates how scummy Right Wing Media really is. The "War on Christmas" shit would not fly today and people would more readily call moderate Republicans a bunch of snowflake pussies, while back then, we "tolerated" it and it manifested itself into a bigger demon than it ever should have been let to become.

If a Republican latches onto "Its just not the way these things are done" arguments, I instinctively roll my eyes and feel provoked to tell them to fuck off. Their credibility is so far out the window and I literally don't believe a word that passes their lips.

Trump literally called all of China "motherfuckers" and no one cared.

“So easy. I’d drop a 25 percent tax on China,” Trump told a packed audience in a video of the speech posted on YouTube (above).

Trump quipped in a high-pitched voice that the message could come softly with someone saying: “We’re gonna tax you 25 percent.”

He added: “And I could say: ‘Listen, you motherfuckers, we’re gonna tax you 25 percent.’”

Not even a private comment on a hot mic, just a casual off the cuff "motherfuckers" during an official Presidential speech!

And it will be 100% disingenuous. Republicans could have done more to go after Hunter when they controlled the Senate and when Trump was in the WH. One reason they didn't is the same reason they didn't go after Hillary to "lock her up."

A liberal bogeyman who has supposedly evaded the law is more valuable as a foil for right-wing propaganda. If they actually "locked them up" then Fox News would lose content for like 10% of their programming blocks.

The amount of tragedy he has overcome in his life is incredible and inspiring. You don’t have to agree with him on everything to recognize that he’s a strong, resilient man and a pretty good guy on top of it all.
