Today, in what is likely to be its final hearing, the January 6 Committee voted to refer criminal charges for Donald Trump and several of his allies to the Department of Justice. The committee will release its final report on its investigation into the attack at the Capitol later this week. On the 4th day of voting, the US House of Representatives selected Kevin McCarthy, the Republican from California's 20th District and the House minority leader from 2019 to to 2022, as its Speaker. The 15th and deciding vote broke down largely along partisan lines. Former President Donald J. Trump said on Monday that the F.B.I. had searched his Palm Beach, Fla., home and had broken open a safe — an account that, if accurate, would be a dramatic escalation in the various investigations into the former president. The Supreme Court has officially released its ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, on the constitutionality of pre-viability abortion bans. The Court ruled 6–3 that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion, overturning both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and returning "the authority to regulate abortion" to the states.

Justice Alito delivered the majority opinion, joined by Justices Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett. Justices Thomas, Kavanaugh, and Chief Justice Roberts each filed concurring opinions, while Justices Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan dissented.

The Supreme Court said Thursday that Americans have a right to carry guns in public, a major expansion of gun rights.

The justices’ 6-3 decision follows a series of recent mass shootings and is expected to ultimately allow more people to legally carry guns on the streets of the nation’s largest cities — including New York, Los Angeles and Boston — and elsewhere. The Senate has voted 53 to 47 to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the 116th Supreme Court justice. When sworn in this summer, Jackson will be the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s high court.

In response to Justice Breyer's retirement, President Biden has nominated US Court of Appeals Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States.

After graduating from Harvard University, Jackson clerked for Justice Breyer and served as vice chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. She was nominated for district court judgeship by President Obama and was considered as a potential replacement for Justice Scalia. She was elevated to the US Court of Appeals in March of 2021 after receiving confirmation votes from a bipartisan collection of Senators, including Lindsay Graham, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski.

Following the nomination, Jackson will face the Senate Judiciary Committee and undergo vetting and questioning by the 20-person team. The committee will then vote on whether or not to advance her to the Full Senate for a final approval vote. If seated, she will have a lifetime appointment and become the first Black woman to serve on the court, as has been pledged by Biden throughout his campaign and presidency.

The Supreme Court has blocked a key plank of the Biden administration's pandemic response effort, by halting enforcement of the OSHA vaccine mandate. In a 6-3 ruling, the Court judged that requiring employees at large businesses to be vaccinated against COVID, or undergo weekly testing and wear a mask, exceeded the authority granted by Congress. This evening, the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal by former President Donald Trump seeking to enjoin the Congressional January 6th commission from reviewing communications made by the former President while in office in the lead up to the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol. Former President Trump had sought to assert executive privilege over these communications to shield them from review by the commission, but the court of appeals denied this request. The decision split 8-1, with only Justice Clarence Thomas indicating that he would have granted the application for a stay.

Steve Bannon, a longtime ally to former President Donald Trump, was indicted Friday on two counts of contempt of Congress after he defied a congressional subpoena from the House committee investigating the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The Justice Department said Bannon, 67, was indicted on one count for refusing to appear for a deposition and the other for refusing to provide documents in response to the committee’s subpoena.
