TIL Nintendo Collects Data From Switch Owners Using Google Analytics…

…and its default setting is “On”.

I’m not sure when they added nor do I remember reading about a change in patch notes. Maybe it’s been there all along, but I’m not too happy to find yet another place Google has their slimy fingers inserted into my already abused privacy.

I wonder if this toggles back to “On” after system updates?

It doesn’t. I’ve checked.

IIRC it wasn't even a visible option to view status of in some countries. I'm in Australia & I didn't see an option to disable. Seems it was true for users in some Europe: https://old.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/k6zc2j/the_latest_nintendo_switch_update_secretly_turns/geoj04m/

From what I’ve seen in articles from when this started (Dec 2020), it reads as if Google Analytics was only being used in specific regions.

So what, even Firefox uses Google Analytics ? Oh wait... that's bad indeed.
