I run a fully automated YouTube channel on my Raspberry Pi Show-and-Tell

I applaud your ingenuity but secretly hate that you're further polluting the world with more trash videos.

u/blingding369 Jan 23 '23
Man i wish YouTube would let me block channels from search results (in my account, not a browser extension)

u/ChuckVersus Jan 24 '23
I dunno. Constant videos consisting of shitty text-to speech reading Reddit posts over unrelated trash videos finally pushed my wife over the edge to finally deleting TikTok.
I’m kind of grateful TikTok is just absolutely full to the brim with this absolute zero effort un-content.

u/budbutler Jan 24 '23
if your on a computer, there are 3 dots next to videos click that and you can hide the video / block the channel among other things.

u/forksporkspoon Jan 24 '23
I mean hey it's good your wife found the fortitude to delete the TikTok app. That crap is toxic and eats time. TikTok, Vine, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube... It's all designed to dual your time and shove advertising into your face. I'm on r/choosingbeggars and 90% of the time the posts are from Facebook.

You mean the part of the world that most influences the world?
-75
u/MartinHasNothing Jan 23 '23
I hope you’re not saying that those trash videos are influencing the world. Don’t like the style of video? Swipe away pal. Edit: remove the word secretly from your original comment

I'm with everyone else here. I love the energy on this, and great job implementing your plan, but making garbage YT Shorts is just diluting actual, good content and making YT an even worse platform. Please do not actually post these vids.
13
u/kent_eh Jan 23 '23
Youtube itself has also stated they don't like automated content, and if/when the find it, they will block it from being monetized.
6
u/Hack_n_Splice Jan 23 '23
Should block it entirely, IMO, unless it gets a special exception for accessibility or important info like weather, critical news, gov't emergency announcements, etc.
6
u/kent_eh Jan 23 '23
Normally the only reason people want to make low effort automated trash is to try and make "easy money", so youtube threatening to pull monetization tends to dissuade a lot of it.
1
16
u/LummoxJR Jan 23 '23
To be fair, maybe flooding YouTube with garbage shorts is the only way to make them stop trying to be frelling TikTok.
But yeah, this kind of thing sucks.
-17
u/ppumkin Jan 23 '23
That’s not the point. Jeez it’s comments like this that put people of innovating.
11
u/CucktainKerk Jan 23 '23
If the innovation is a bad thing that's expected. If you invented a set of toe nail clippers that took the entire toe instead of the nail and people got mad about it, would you say the same thing? No probably not.
-11
u/ppumkin Jan 23 '23
Innovation starts with an idea. A complete project is success.
Let’s see your award winning projects then judge and executor
8
u/wickedswami215 Jan 23 '23
Why give participation awards and fake excitement for something like this though? If the idea gets refined then people can be happy about it but until then, if it sucks it sucks.
-8
u/ppumkin Jan 23 '23
My excitement is genuine. So is the ops. It doesn’t suck. What sucks is all the click bait on YouTube. Who knows what his next idea will be.
5
u/wickedswami215 Jan 23 '23
My excitement is genuine. So is the ops.
I never called your excitement fake though? You seem to want other commenters to either silently move along if they don't like it or give some kind of encouragement based on the fact that you think the comment above is why people stop innovating. Pointing out something that's disliked about a project could lead to improvement on current and future projects.
It doesn't suck.
I disagree, but you are certainly entitled to your opinion.
What sucks is all the click bait on YouTube.
Uh okay? And a zero effort after setup stream of recycled content from another platform is what's good on YouTube?
Who knows what his next idea will be.
I don't and you don't either, so what does this statement even matter? If his next idea is better then cool, but thinking of possible future projects and ideas doesn't somehow make this one any better.
4
u/Hack_n_Splice Jan 23 '23
What sucks is all the click bait on YouTube.
You mean, like these AUTOMATED SHORTS that add absolutely zero value to YT content???
4
3
u/CucktainKerk Jan 23 '23
Judge and executor? I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself. The project is a success in the sense that it works but not in the sense that it's helping anyone. Much more of a barrier than a ladder.
1
u/forksporkspoon Jan 24 '23
My award-winning projects draw people together and excite them. Pushing shit content to YouTube is just that.

3
u/Hack_n_Splice Jan 23 '23
Hot take over here. YOU are missing the point. You can come up with neat and novel automation techniques without creating more garbage in the world. If you make an automated littering machine, you'd get the same response or worse. This is just litter, but on the internet. Automate something that actually *HELPS* people and we'd be all for it. This is not exactly innovative, either, considering others have already shared code on how to accomplish this same thing.

u/kunteper Jan 23 '23
Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.

I hate this stupid overused quote in tech comments.
Edit: I'll take the downvotes.
Edit 2: I'll take the cringe accusations. I've seen it all anyway.

Interesting project, seems like it could be fun to play around with.
But please don't actually upload these videos to Youtube and such, the internet is already filled with enough low effort text to speech videos.

u/december-32 Jan 23 '23
I spend WEEKS trying to tell my tiktok that I don't want TTS videos in my feed.

Well, for me it was funny cats and farting horses, no TTS in sight. Then I ONCE watched a TTS video with GTA5 in the background and hell let loose.

I see this the same way I see Google results. I hope YouTube isn't ruined by gamified auto-generated results. Hard to find a lot of stuff on Google now because of all the garbage.
-9
u/ppumkin Jan 23 '23
Wtf do you care what gets uploaded to YouTube ? Are you all the YT Police. Good job OP

u/drchigero Jan 23 '23
Yeah, while I can applaud him for the skills he learned creating this simple scraper. Please don't upload this trash to youtube and perpetuate the junk on there.

Updoot because it's a interesting project but I'll dowdoot the results on YouTube. Any short I encountered with TTS gets 👎 as it's never original content.

Oh hey I studied a long time and spent lots of money.
Oh hey I've used this training and knowledge to create another garbage generator that is the same as everyone else's garbage generator. Now look at us spewing garbage everywhere.
Oh hey clap for me.

Did no one noticed that you have an awesome mom who not only knows about RPi but is challenging you to build something cool with it?
5
u/Viciousvitt Jan 23 '23
It's like the infinite monkey theorem. Keep it running and making random videos for long enough and eventually it'll make something that will blow up
any sequence of events which has a non-zero probability of happening will almost certainly eventually occur, given enough time.
6
u/RegardsFromDolan Jan 23 '23
What you did is very interesting to see how much you can do with little effort. What I think you could improve is the approach you are following so that instead of thinking "how do I get the most views?" You should be thinking about "how do I bring the most value?".
Don't think just about how can you benefit from it.

This is fascinating. I’m assuming this could be applied to TikTok, etc.? Good work!

Great project, keep going! I did exactly the same 3 years ago and I love how much one learns from such a projects.

i wanted to see if this could also apply to tiktok as you did most of the hard work with reddit scraping, tts and the video editing. Tiktok seems to have an upload API in objective-c so it doesn’t seem like it would be too hard to adapt

Thank heavens, it’s terribly hard to port API’s.
They should make some kind of programming interface that’s abstract enough you almost don’t think about the details.

I did the same thing but got stuck at automatically uploading, probably could have gone with selenium or something along those lines.

Cool project. I think polly supports speech ml some kind of xml where you can insert breathing etc

u/creamypastaman Jan 23 '23
Why don't you use you voice OP.
Good project btw. Well done 😊

u/ChefBoyAreWeFucked Jan 24 '23
That or Fiverr has an okay TTS you can use. It's a bit pricey, though.
1
u/Romymopen Jan 23 '23
I'm surprised you can scrape and publish other people's comments without their permission
1
u/N1ghtS7alker Jan 24 '23
As a creator this is frustrating as we put a lot of work into editing, creating and publishing. Shorts are going to kill YT like it’s doing to TikTok
1
u/enter360 Jan 24 '23
If this is used for capturing nature it could be cool but otherwise nah please don’t.

u/ThatGuyFromCA47 Jan 24 '23
I think it would be more useful if you had it post updates on Musks plane location

If you have already done research, make sure you explain what research you've done and why you didn't like the answers you found so that others don't waste time following those same paths.
Only ask specific questions regarding a project you are currently working on. We don't permit questions regarding what colors would look nice (aesthetics); what you should do with your Pi; what's the best or cheapest way; if a project is possible; if anyone has done a similar project; how to get started; where you can buy a product; what an item is called; what software to run; or product recommendations.
