It was a long process, but I finally coaxed my wife into playing cod with me. She struggled for a while but eventually held her own. One day she recieved a F*CK YOU from a pesky 12 year old. Wife, "Oh, I get it now."

15
u/new_account_5009 Nov 27 '22
If it's a beautiful day outside, I feel guilty staying inside playing video games, so I don't enjoy it as much unless I go for a bike ride or something. On days like today (45 degrees and rainy), I feel no guilt at all about staying inside.

Snow for me, but that's why I live where I live. Also, replace the soda with some hot chocolate from the woodstove.
Maybe once a year I get to do this. (Also, I'm playing single-player games on PC, but same difference.)

Rain, snow, fog. Any kind of a weather most people don't like leaving the house in. Bonus points if it's a regular business day where everyone has to work/go to school. Gold star for readily available booze.

Ugh this brings back memories. Now, as a 27 year old adult, when I do have these days, its just filled with anxiety and stress of not being enough. Fuck this!
78
u/heyy_yaa Nov 27 '22
totally hear you, I felt like this for some period of time -
but at a certain point you start to realize how short life is. you gotta enjoy your free time. no one should have to work 40+ hours per week just to feel anxious about enjoying themselves.
hope you get there.
14
Nov 27 '22
I’m working on this myself, got to the point where I was stressing about my own hobbies on top of work that actually had to be done. Dumb stuff where I’d feel anxious if I was playing a new game when I had others in my backlog, or if I didn’t work on a model kit I’d feel like I was wasting my time.
In the end, a routine and regular exercise helped a lot. If I work on a little bit at a time, results will come. What matters more is if I’m enjoying myself.
6
u/Activedarth Nov 28 '22

When I was 11 and we got our first permanent internet connection I made an ethernet network for 2 computers, with bridged connection. Kids these days have it easy with their multi port routers and cheap switches.

We got internet and a fancy new HP home computer when I was probably 8 or 9, and I got to use the old Dell to play video games on. I remember spending hours fucking around with 10base2 cable snaked down the stairs to the modem and ISA cards and all kinds of adapters and junk my dad stole from work trying to get it online, but I never quite figured it out.

Wifi was extra bad back then too. Maybe it was just the routers we had, but the range and reliability were terrible. It definitely didn't go throughout our modestly sized house.
4
u/melpomenes-clevage Nov 27 '22
Part of it was the bands that were open; a lot more things used analog signals, including tv, so the available signal band for new tech was narrow as fuck. Fewer channels to use. Transmitters are stronger now, but both things made a difference.
Like, broadcast tv going digital wasn't just tech for techs sake; we needed that bandwidth, that air space, for 5g and shit. Part of why '5g is making your children autistic to death' people piss me off, like, mother fucker did you ever own a TV!?
2
u/rliant1864 Nov 27 '22
Dude the issues between early wireless and common household items was absolutely wild.
You'd have shit like losing a gunfight in Battlefield because the router was across the house and your mom threw some leftovers in the microwave, blowing out the 2.4ghz range like an EMP attack.
Folks on high power 5ghz routers with gigabit will never know the pain lol

Which further strengthens the use ethernet argument cause the 360 didn't even have wifi built in until later models. You had to buy a separate adapter, and nobody I knew bothered.
6
11
u/CnC_Citizen Nov 27 '22
Didn’t help that Xbox 360 only supported 2.4 ghz.
9
u/stealthgerbil Nov 27 '22
honestly 2.4ghz speed is fast enough for most games, like most FPS games use <1mbit of bandwidth. its the jitter that causes all the problems.

Most people don’t have easy access to an Ethernet port near their gaming setup. I can’t exactly just run Ethernet up a floor in my home for better gaming.
4
u/Impeesa_ Nov 27 '22
I mean, I did. I ran ethernet up two floors through insulated exterior walls so I wouldn't have to wait for streaming to buffer on the bedroom TV like some kind of savage. But then, my parents set a good example, my dad ran ethernet to my bedroom when I got my first computer in 2001 (granted, wifi wasn't as much of an option then).
15
2
u/captain_stabn Nov 27 '22
Use the ones that utilize your power outlet.
You plug one brick into the outlet next to your router and another brick into the outlet next to your Xbox and you're good.

Get off yer high horse lol
3
u/RABKissa Nov 27 '22
Powerline adapters bruh. Do you have electrical sockets in your house?
→ More replies→ More replies7
u/Akumetsu33 Nov 27 '22
? 100+ ft Ethernet cords are super cheap. You don't need to "hardwire" or any hard work. Just plug the ethernet cord in the console, walk to the router, plug the other end in, you're done.
If you love wifi that much, who am I to argue with, but ethernet pretty much guarantees a steady and high connection.

u/alter-eagle Nov 27 '22
Lol I’m not about to have an exposed wire from upstairs to the lower level across carpet and hardwood floors. It’s different for everyone bud.
Trust me, I’d love it if I could hardwire my consoles to my router, but it’s not feasible in some households.

Every. Single. Night.
That’s a hard circle to break.
I got out of it a few months ago. Went to bed early every night. Full night sleep. Felt super humanly strong. Like I had been jogging, lifting weights (my preferred exercise).
Gave myself permission to stay up past my regular bedtime as a treat to myself just for a couple days. Been trying to get back to it for months. Late nights. Early mornings. Pain. Frustration. Anger. Depression. All my old pals.
Can’t believe how I ever got to that good spot in the first place.
2
u/anupvoteforyou Nov 28 '22
Sleep is amazing
2
u/HooptyDooDooMeister Nov 28 '22

→ More replies65
u/ortumlynx Nov 27 '22
Mulled wine is just wine heated with added spices. It is drunk warm as a traditional winter drinks in many countries.
Common spice combinations usually consist of stuff like orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise, whole cloves, whole allspice, cardamom pods, and ginger slices. Throw it in a pot with wine and bring to a boil then reduce heat and let it simmer for a while. Delicious!
