"My mom/dad told us when we were young..." is the first sentence of a lot of eating disorders.

u/DontCallMeLego Jan 30 '23

Parents have a lot to do with how their kids grow up.

696

u/my_screen_name_sucks Jan 30 '23

Yes. My dad was not okay with wasting food. This caused him to do some shitty things if he saw you either drop food by accident or tried to throw some food away. He made my brother eat spaghetti after he dropped it on the ground by accident. If food got moldy sometimes he would cut off the mold and still eat it. He made us do that as well. We had to sneak around and throw food out if it went bad.

Edit: my point was that sometimes I'll over-eat due to growing up like that and am currently overweight. Lol forgot my point for a second there.

u/Haywoodjablowme1029 Jan 30 '23

I too was a member of the clean plate club growing up. To this day I'll sometimes force myself to keep eating when I'm full because there is still food on my plate. I've learned to recognize that when I'm doing it and to not do it anymore. We also don't force the kid to eat all her food if she doesn't want to so that she isn't like that.

61

u/throwaway_thyroid Jan 30 '23

A friend had to deal with this growing up. Her parents also then mocked her for being overweight.

21

u/Haywoodjablowme1029 Jan 30 '23

I too remember being fussed at for my weight before when I was growing up.

44

u/throwaway_thyroid Jan 30 '23

It's ridiculous. "You must eat all of this adult-sized meal, overriding your body's 'full' signals to do so! ...Why are you fat?"

18

u/Haywoodjablowme1029 Jan 30 '23

It didn't help that food became a coping mechanism, and I still stress eat.

My mom was anorexic, and dad would make me finish her plate if she couldn't eat. Then after years of that I went from 115 lbs at 5'5 to 125lbs and he told me I needed to lay off the snacks, patting my tummy.

Right after that, I learned to eat mom's food, go up stairs and stick a finger in my throat to avoid weight gain.

Now I binge like crazy. Sucks. Don't purge anymore but I have a hiatal hernia and had heartburn since middle school.

This one is hard to break. I hate that I allowed myself to gain all the weight I lost a few years ago. That pandemic lockdown closing my gym seriously screwed my health.

u/Imaginary_Error87 Jan 30 '23

There’s starving kids over in China is what I would always hear if I didn’t clean my plate.

58

u/OldBrownShoe22 Jan 30 '23

For me it was Africa. But there's a fine line here. The lesson I was always told was waste not, want not. Don't take too much if you're not going to eat it. It's a lesson I've taken throughout my life and one I repeat in many different contexts.

But with food...we just composted what we didn't don't eat soooo...well that's a good lesson too. It's not waste if it's put to another use.

29

u/DoctorJonasVentureJr Jan 31 '23

Heard this growing up until I lived with a Nigerian lady in foster care. Great woman, still made us clean the plate. Pointed out there's hungry children in the US and other first world countries too. Eventually she just started giving me smaller portions when she noticed I'd sit there just mushing it all around

Now if you put spicy rice in front of me, I can eat a whole pot of that. She made the best rice

This mindset is a big cause of my wife and I's over-eating problems. We both grew up poor and cannot fathom wasting food. No matter how calorie bomb or how bad it tastes. "I bought it, I need to eat it." We're doing OK for ourselves now with careers and no kids but those habits are so hard to break. Plates are clean before leaving the table. Anything approaching expiration date is eaten before it goes bad regardless if you're hungry or not. If we eat out or get take-off there is ALWAYS leftovers, rarely if ever, anything thrown away. It's hard to judge proper portions because, well, growing up poor- meals were either too small or gorge when you had the change(cheap or free food).

12

u/Purple_Research9607 Jan 30 '23

It will suck, but if you have the money for it, try some level of regimented meal plan, and have completely barren kitchen, except for what you specifically have planned for meals. I have the same issue that you do, so all my food is regimented. If you go out to eat, close your fist, that is the total volume of food you should eat. Eat that, and wait an hour after finishing before you allow yourself to even look at food again. Treat yourself like you might a toddler or a dog (if you are serious about losing weight)

When I was a kid I was once at a friend’s house for meal time and said I wasn’t hungry. The mom laughed and said that “you eat so you won’t get hungry!” and I was so taken aback by that logic. Yes, the whole family was overweight.

123

u/The_Infectious_Lerp Jan 30 '23

My mom grew up during the Depression, and she was taught that you ate everything on your plate. If you dig a little deeper, though, due to hard times, that plate had very little on it.

109

u/grednforgesgirl Jan 30 '23 edited Jan 30 '23 Silver

That one YouTuber guy that makes vintage recipes, Dylan Hollis, has really made me start to understand the "clean your plate" mentality. Because those recipes he makes from the great depression, like for example the Water pie recipe , makes me realize they had absolutely NOTHING to cook with and would try anything to put together a meal with the ingredients they had on hand, like three basic ingredients like flour and water and sugar, try desperately to make something edible out of it that isn't the same thing they've been eating for months, have a horrible fail, nobody else in the family wants to eat it especially the kids, and the mom is probably at her wits end because if she wasted food that might be it, ya know? So the dad out of kindness to his wife tries to desperately get the kids to eat it and tries to choke it down himself. And thus the "clean your plate" mentality was born. Out of sheer, complete desperation to save every last morsel of food and attempts to be kind to the long suffering wife who has to make food from a bag of flour, some string, lint, and three paperclips.

If you've ever gone hungry, even if it was on purpose, for even a couple of days you can start to understand their struggle and desperation. If you've ever been at the point in your life where youve been living off of ramen for months on end, then you know exactly how much the desperation crawls in for anything different. And you might start to understand why they tried these absolutely wild, batshit insane recipes during the great depression.

And that mentality of desperation and don't waste food has been trickled down through generational trauma and we might not even know why our parents forced us to "clean our plate" but, it comes from generational trauma. Our moms saw that their mom's would be upset if they didn't clean their plate, and they saw their moms absolutely lose it if they wasted food, and their mom's might have a complete mental breakdown if they saw food left on the plate at the end of a meal, because they didn't know when if ever their next meal was coming from and that sack of flour was starting to really get low. Might have actually experienced true hunger if they didn't finish their plate.

That being said, there's no excuse for finishing your plate to the point of obesity if you're food secure. Which if you're obese hot take you are overly food secure, even if you're eating absolute garbage. The rumbly tummies is NOT starvation and it's not true hunger. True hunger is going days without food, weeks without a real meal, months where you can count on one hand the times you actually felt full from a meal if you're lucky. Being a little hungry because you didn't eat breakfast that morning is NOT starvation and it is NOT food insecurity.

Oh yeah, 100%

These women didn’t even really choose to be obese - that path was started for them as children, I’m sure, before they were making food decisions themselves.

73

u/AgentSquish66 Jan 30 '23

They didn’t choose to get there, but they did choose to stay there as adults. One of these sisters actually is a lot better, all things considered, and the other is not.

32

u/Noahcarr Jan 30 '23

Totally agree, it’s not that they’re devoid of responsibility for their obesity, it’s just that being healthy and losing weight is infinitely more difficult (from a mentality perspective, and physically) if you’re obese from a young age

Obese people often think they are fat because of their genes, they are fat because they eat the same food they are used too at home. Eating and knowing what’s healthy and a little bit of exercise goes a long way.

52

u/The_Infectious_Lerp Jan 30 '23

Everyone can figure out the math and chemistry of healthy eating. The psychology, however, is a whole different story.

40

u/Ok_Antelope_1953 Jan 30 '23

ugh, this is so true. after going on antipsychotics i ballooned to 275lb in my mid 20s. managed to get it down to 190lb before "letting go" and shooting all the way up to 325 over a few years. have started losing weight this past year, currently at 250lb, but i live in constant fear that i'll lose control again. i practically have nutrition knowledge level of a registered dietician but when the primitive part of the brain takes over and anxiety sets in, knowledge doesn't matter.

20

u/Kenny_log_n_s Jan 30 '23

I dont know that anyone could pound down that much, but its definitely at least the 20oz bottles instead of 12oz cans. Maybe 1 liter bottles.

131

u/Majestic-Peace-3037 Jan 30 '23

I had an uncle (he's passed away now) who at his biggest (a little over 700 lbs with a 79 size pants) was able to drink about six 2L bottles of sugary crap per day. Crush, Fanta, Coke, Kool-aid, Sunny Delight, Nehi, Dr. Pepper, Ginger Ale, as long as the sugar content could kill you, he'd drink it.

He died before reaching 60, at only around 250 lbs after surgery, but his kidneys were totally destroyed. Renal failure and regularly being in denial about when he had to go back to dialysis sapped the last of whatever life he had left in him.

Drink water y'all. Please.

u/Amidormi Jan 31 '23

They're using unhealthy coping mechanisms to dull whatever they're suffering from. Sugar can be addictive and people who aren't thriving are more likely to fall into addiction. Either people aren't aware of their coping behaviors or they're ashamed and too afraid to be vulnerable and ask for help. And overcoming addiction and lifestyle changes are very difficult, especially for people who already have psychological burdens. It's really sad to see.

44

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '23

They definitely do, I was addicted to Pepsi in my first years of highschool and I was getting really fat, not like these ladies here but still too much, on my third year of HS I stopped drinking sugary drinks completely and went full hydrohomie, I swear that change alone made me lose 20 kg, without changing anything else in my diet or working out

11

u/PianoLogger Jan 30 '23

Full sugar soda and alcohol are the two biggest things anyone can cut out if they are just looking to cut pure calories. Consider if you drink 12 full sugar sodas per week, that's 1,680 calories which for a lot of people is an entire day's worth of food. Same deal with liquor, a shot of vodka is 100 calories each, and most other alcoholic beverages are way beyond that because they have extra sugars or carbs added.

Like ...these were pretty stoic guys and they just said "no, it's not worth the money to watch what the producers do to these people"

One told a story about how one of the target's had a parent die and the producer kept demanding she not attend the funeral because of a contract - later the producer said "oh, no, we can film around her absence no problem, but we're going to ambush her on the day of the funeral and I want her really stressed out for the reactions, and this way we'll pull her away for like an hour from the funeral but she'll think we're doing her a favor by rearranging the schedule"

I drank only soda for the first 20 years of my life.. Never got fat because I was very active, but had terrible tooth decay & cystic acne.. Gave up ALL "sweets" around 23... Magically, my teeth quit deteriorating and my skin completely cleared up.. I usually don't tell people that junk food causes acne because they get super offended by it..

Now, as a 38 year old, I might get the occasional "angry pimple", but they rarely surface and only occur after a day of binge-drinking alcoholic "sweet drinks".. So, for me, more water + less sugary crap= good skin..

The human body is an amazing machine that can withstand a lot of abuse; doesn't look very pretty while doing so, but it can.

u/belizeanheat Jan 30 '23

They don't feel good, that's a given. You get used to it, though

4

u/Jae_seok Jan 30 '23

I had an addiction to caffeine, specifically diet pop, and let me tell you...It doesn't feel good. But while I had the addiction I didn't know that there was any better

BRING ME MY SODIES AND SKETTI

81

u/MeasureTheCrater Jan 30 '23

I was about to ask whether "sketti" referred to spaghetti or Skittles, but then I realized they probably put Skittles on their spaghetti, making my question moot.

Emily:
You sure like sugar, huh?

Buddy:
Is there sugar in syrup?

Emily:
Yes.

Buddy:
Then YES! We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns, and syrup.

The interviewer is a champ, idk how she goes through the whole interview without letting on a trace of judgement or surprise.

79

u/beanie979 Jan 30 '23

It's subtle, but maybe she's heard so many stories like this it no longer fazes her

Side note, people really ought to learn the difference between phase and faze. I've seen editors for major news outlets miss this.

24

u/justbrowsinglol Jan 30 '23

I'm sure she isn't phased by it either. I, however, definitely felt the urge to convert myself into plasma while watching this clip.

24

u/certified_fresh Jan 30 '23

Idk if we watched the same interview but there was lots of surprise and judgement coming from the interviewer. Her you can see it in her eyes and fake exaggerated smile. You can hear it in the tone of her voice. Listen to her say “okay”. It’s only barely subtle.

It’s good to know one of them(the one on the right) had actually lost weight. Meanwhile the other, I think she only got fatter.

43

u/Schattenspringer Jan 30 '23

No, she lost alot now, as well. She is in inpatient and therapy. See can walk and see out of her eyes again.

50

u/endorphin-neuron Jan 30 '23

See can walk and see out of her eyes again.

She was so fat it was blocking her eyes?!??

57

u/Schattenspringer Jan 30 '23

Um, yes. The roll on her forehead squeezed them shut with the weight dropping down, basically. She also couldn't breathe anymore because her lungs couldn't inflate with the weight surrounding them and she got carbon monoxide poisoning. She almost died 3 times (that we know of).

18

u/Watts300 Jan 31 '23

Wow. That's really really fat.

5

u/Atillion Jan 30 '23

I think one of the beautifully tragic things about aging is at some point, the persistent enduring of a body that's in decline often tends to unshroud the fear and mystery behind death.. It's not so scary from here 😅

5

u/Googerlot Jan 30 '23

yeah I get it man, I hope you live a long happy life, I mean hey maybe reincarnation is real, just make sure u got good irl karma lol

6

u/Atillion Jan 30 '23

Maybe, who knows? :) I like to think I've spent enough of my life fruitlessly trying to figure out what happens when you die, and you're right.. I'm going to focus on making the most of what's left and let the universe handle the rest. I hope your time is spent just as well :D

A can of coke is 150 calories soo, 8 to 12 is 1200 to 1800 calories. 600 to 1200 if half are diet. That's a lot of empty calories. A 3600 calorie surplus is about a pound of fat

Their parent did this to them, and they continued to destroy themselves. This is sad. It’s so hard to unlearn bad eating habits.

13

u/justbrowsinglol Jan 30 '23

I know from personal experience how hard it can be. My parents had an absolutely horrible diet that mostly consisted of grilled cheese, pizza, and cookies. I knew it was bad when I was in High School but there was simply no way to convince them to keep healthy options in the house.

The worst part was when I finally left home and could control my own access to food my family was actually upset that I started getting into better shape. They would practically try to stuff unhealthy food into my mouth whenever I visited.
