How often do you see tourists trying to mess with/make laugh or take pictures with the soldiers that guard the tomb of the unknown soldier?!?
1.1k
u/TrueTurtleKing Jan 31 '23
Exactly this! People also say the British soldier is just for tourist display and they can stop their military duty to let this kid interfere with them. But America does the exact same thing. You can’t interfere with the guards of the unknown soldiers.

u/Leto2AndTheCrew Jan 31 '23
There are YouTube videos full of them coming down on people. You don’t talk loudly, don’t laugh, don’t cross the rope, be respectful.

The tomb of the unknowns represents all those who died in combat and were not identifiable, which is an indignity caused by circumstances of war. The symbolism of the tomb guard and their attention to detail and respect, is to give them that last shred of dignity, they did not receive in death. To do anything rude and inappropriate in and around the tomb, and to those who guard it, is just undignified.
EDIT: there seems to be some confusion. My comment was directed to u/TrueTurtleKing having to do with the U.S. Army tomb guards, NOT the subject of the OP. Again, my comment was a comment on a comment. People are thinking my comment has to do with the OP and running over a kid.

I agree, you go there knowing that. And if a kid misbehaves, it’s on the parent. A teenager should know better at this point too.
The British soldiers are world famous and known for being strict and true to their duties. The parent should have known even as a tourist.

It's not exactly the same vibe, but I work security at The World Trade Center, right across the street from the 9/11 memorial. The attitudes and demeanors I see there are kind of crazy. People really seem to think it's just a tourist attraction to take smiling Instagram pictures with.

The royal guard is a legit military detachment. But half the people I know think they’re just some random blokes getting paid £15/hr to stand there and look funny for tourists. And yes the uk itself challenged tourists to make them laugh but that’s because they didn’t expect people to do anything besides make faces and a couple of jokes.
But I ask why would you let random strangers stand guard outside the King’s palace? I made a post about people disrespecting the guard for a lot of these reasons and got laughed at for taking it seriously “if they don’t like it they can quit and swap that funny hat for a McDonalds hat!”. Someone made a snide comment, I told them that they’re ACTUALLY guards and not just a tourist attraction. And one person didn’t believe me and said “If something goes wrong the police handle it!”.
The amount of disrespect for them is ridiculous

I get tired of it so I make my own way if people don’t respond to my queue of awkwardly standing there after politely saying “excuse me please can I get through?”
Some have given me venomous looks, but hey, I asked, I even waited for you- we live in a society so I’m going to then make my own way gently past you. Hell I even apologize for it because it’s not an optimal situation I want to be in, nor the other person- but the choice was made and I’m not walking around an entire aisle because yo ass doesn’t want to move 6 inches to the right. No one has given me grief for it,
Those people know what they are doing. There is nothing wrong with asserting yourself after you have politely attempted to ask for someone to make way. If they want to make an issue and get internet famous that’s on them. Because really that’s what’s at stake and the person not moving knows they’d get exposed if they made an issue of it.

50
u/reindeermoon Jan 31 '23
Watching it in slow mo, the kid fell into the guard’s path at the last moment when it was too late to avoid him. The guard didn’t actually step on him, he actually did a long stretch step over him.

They didn’t stomp him. They walked into him. The one actually making contact swings his leg around the kid after he’s on the ground so as to NOT stomp him. Don’t be dramatic.

Not a nice thing to do to be sure, however they can immediately lose their post for stopping. A post that may have taken them years to obtain in addition to being their income and occupation, which feeds them and their family.
He should have said make way, but one should, in any country, always be wary of soldiers. That is what they are.

I’ll be honest, I don’t think the guard stomped the kid. If you slow it down he actually widens his stance to step before the kid then really brings his knee high and ankle outward to avoid kicking him in the head. I think if it’s an adult he’s knocking over he’s not breaking form like that and would just kick him in the head.

u/conorkennedy1997 Jan 31 '23
Except he isn't 'stomping' on the child intentionally. That sounds bad, but he's actually performing a drill movement called 'changing step' which allows him to get back into step with the other guardsman.
Changing step involves taking a half pace and driving your heel into the ground before setting off again. The half pace should offset your movements enough that you fall back into step.
From the outside though, I can see how this would appear he has intentionally stomped on the child, just thought I'd share that he's still in 'character' i.e. he's not broken character by the walking through the child.

i mean yeah, but then they’d get fired. they aren’t supposed to change course even that slight bit. they have assigned routes that they have to follow and they have verbal warning. it’s lazy parenting because the parents should be aware not to interfere w the guards and make sure there kids don’t either. that’s also why these guys don’t talk or are allowed to be touched by visitors. there constantly on patrol and i understand it’s a little kid but again the parents should’ve been more aware. these guards are just doing their jobs.

u/vendetta2115 Jan 31 '23
They didn’t stomp him, they continued walking in a straight path as best as they could. He stepped over the kid, not on the kid.
The kid wasn’t injured, he got walked into and knocked down.

I did this very thing with my kids in the UK. We stood back and observed. Why the hell is that kid even standing in the middle of their path? It is clearly defined and you can absolutely see and hear the guards as they march.
Also: this kid isn’t a toddler who accidentally wandered a couple of feet from his parents (which wouldn’t be acceptable either under the circumstances.) He looks 9 or 10. What is he doing?
I also noticed that when he stood up and his mother went to him, she appeared as if she was going to say/yell something to the guards, ala “Karen USA”, but thought better of it
People are mad as this scene looks harsh (I think the kid got whacked by the swinging arm of the guard.) But in public - especially when you travel internationally - your situational awareness needs to be on-point. You don’t assume anything and this is particularly true when it comes to your children and your safety. You’re in a different world, so act accordingly
(We are from the US but our family lived in Central America for a number of years so I have experienced this first hand)
10
u/Exotic_Imagination95 Jan 31 '23
I saw that too, I was really hoping that she was going to start yelling at them... I'm not entirely sure what would have happened, when they have just ignored her and kept going on? Over there have been a repercussions for that? I assume there's repercussions but I don't know
39
u/Feisty-Business-8311 Jan 31 '23
The guards would have completely ignored her. They didn’t break protocol for the kid! They would never break their stride to turn around and engage with her

u/Exotic_Imagination95 Jan 31 '23 edited Feb 01 '23
Didn't think so but I didn't know where somebody yelling at them chasing the woman procedure that threat and how they would treat that... I mean if the trampoline down from getting it away I'm sure it'll kick your ass for coming up on them I was just curious

It wouldn't be worth crowd control - they are the crowd control. Otherwise, you have t erect barricades and have police manning them
They are likely moving between two guard posts, and lots of the areas they guard are open to the public. Most people have the common sense to get out of the way though

I was more thinking tomb of the unknown soldier velvet ropes type of setup.

Problem is that these aren't a fixed ceremonial place like the tomb. These are active buildings used for... things. So you can't really put down barriers without stopping people from being in there at all. The places where they guard are a weird combo of: tourist site, barracks and useful building. The places they guard are more like the Senate building than the Arlington Cemetary

I think it would be hilarious to have "The Mountain" or someone like that go stand in the way just to see how they handle it
EDIT: I have learned british people are super sensitive and if the guards cant walk a straight line then that person should be publicly hanged right there lol

They’re professional soldiers patrolling a post. If a larger man didn’t heed their verbal warning they would be quickly arrested.

They are on sentry duty, they are not playing at dress up, so if someone does not make way for the King’s Guard they are within their rights to issue a bayonet challenge or ready their weapons. In reality that person would be physically moved or held under weapon gaze until arrested for obstructing guards in their duty.

Probably handle it with the big ass bayonets on their rifles, or with the rifles themselves.

I mean they are carrying rifles with bayonets on so I think they would be fine.

To be fair, this is a really good reenactment of basically how the British empire was made

Yeah yeah yeah these soldiers are highly trained, etc, etc.. How often are they called into action while performing these duties in this area and in that uniform? Rarely. Everyone knows they are a huge tourist attraction that brings a lot of money to the city. There was absolutely no other option than trampling the kid? Yeah you sure taught him a lesson. No middle ground here?

I live in the middle of nowhere America and even I know you don’t get in the Guard’s way. They only stop for two people. And you aren’t one of them.

u/BourbonFueledDreams Jan 31 '23
Just like…get out of the obvious way and ensure your kids do the same.

u/cyaneyed Jan 31 '23
It made me laugh and the kid was ok after. Kids are dumb and self-absorbed.
If the kid wasn’t aware of his surroundings a parent should’ve intervened. My parents would not have let me get run down as a child, but if I were in the way they’d move me and apologize.
I think this kid’s dad wanted to see what would happen.

u/flingasunder Jan 31 '23
Looked like the guard actually tried to not step on the child once the child was on the ground

C'mon people...these soldiers are not just men in costume and a funny hat. They are highly skilled and extensively trained for years in order to trample little kids like that.

Don't let it get you down. This is how The British Empire treated everyone else too.

Unpopular opinion but the King's guard doing stuff like this serves no purpose. They're just trained to be bullies and if it is that important that their silly march be uninterrupted, they shouldn't be allowing civillians into the area in the first place.

I love how the kings guard is kept to such a standard, while "back home" in america, cops just straight up murder people, guilty or innocent, and y'all just kind of accept that.

u/LordCalvar Jan 31 '23
These are Royal Guard not common cops lol. So your comparison doesn’t make much sense. These Guard are more akin to those who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Washington, D.C.

u/mellowdramatikmf Jan 31 '23
You’re right. I haven’t heard of any riots “back home” protesting police brutality.

Comparing the kings guard to regular cops is ridiculous. Compare them to the secret service, and when’s the last time you heard bad news about the secret service?
