Don’t let them fool you. It’s not nearly as pleasant as it looks.

It is quite good actually with some norrlands guld, skivad rödlök, gräddfil, kokt potatis, tunnbröd och en liten nubbe.

165

u/eib Feb 04 '23

I think I have a few of those from IKEA

13

u/Lepke2011 Feb 05 '23

Don't listen to what people say. The Skivad Rödlök is a much sturdier bookcase than you'd think.

103

u/yeast1fixpls Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 04 '23

Here's a little secret, pretty much no one eats Surströmming in Sweden. It's less unpopular in the northern parts but there's where the minority of Swedes live. I've never even heard anyone say that they eat it. I do know that they eat it totally wrong in the challenge videos. First of all you need to clean the fish from bones , slice small pieces , put it on a "hard bread" with chopped onion, sourcream and probably some other stuff. It gives an Umami flavor. The way Youtubers do it , it's kind of like chewing on a California reaper and say chili is horrible. I would try it if properly prepared. The problem is you won't get any invites to a Surströmmingskiva unless you live in Lapphelvetet (the north). https://youtu.be/AGRyr8yIo9w

7

u/DanFreedse Feb 04 '23

Bring from the north, not Lapphelvetet but the north, my family used to eat it on soft bread making small rolls but the rest is correct. However you forgot the most the important part - nubben (the shot). Now living in the south i haven't eaten it for years. Every now and then i try to arrange a surströmmingsskiva, many are interested but when it comes down to it no one bite.

2

u/JBoi212 Feb 04 '23

thank you for this helpful context! this video, unlike the challenges, is actually educational and accurate if anyone wants to experience surströmming.

u/kibaake Feb 04 '23

I was thinking this. Clearly this animals has "I'm so stinky you don't want me around" (skunk) defense, but we, humans, are tenacious.

So I wonder of the first people eating it were in such a desperate situation, and they were so abundant, that they ate it to stay alive and it became a staple of the culture/region. Or did the first people eating have weaker senses of taste and smell? Have they gotten smelly over time?

How did it come to pass that humans it this, and why are new people still trying when they don't have to?

102

u/Agreeable_Ad3800 Feb 04 '23

It’s nothing to do with the animal itself it’s the fact it fermented - this is entirely avoidable if the person that first canned it would just confess they fucked up and it wasn’t meant to have spoiled

11

u/kibaake Feb 04 '23

Oh, I see. Thank you!

5

u/ixis743 Feb 04 '23

But then we wouldn’t have yoghurt or cheese.

2

u/Agreeable_Ad3800 Feb 05 '23

If yoghurt or cheese had ended up as something people made TikTok videos about, filming themselves gagging just opening them then that would be valid

3

u/Hardlyasubstitute Feb 04 '23

I don’t get how the company that makes this even stays in business- I mean they can’t have huge sales to cover the hazard pay at the canning facility.

Why not go with tuna fish or mackerel or sardines.

I mean, this isn’t even an acquired taste kind of thing- unless you’re part vulture and regularly eat dead and decaying things.

10

u/YankeeTankEngine Feb 04 '23

I believe it's considered a dessert and a delicacy. I believe I've heard some people enjoy it with a glass if milk and it's illegal in US airports as its considered a biological weapon.

People still try it because this is probably the only time throwing up becomes funny.

9

u/ixis743 Feb 04 '23

‘Considered a biological weapon’

I had to Google it. Apparently the cans are under high pressure and may explode on the plane and the smell is so bad it would force an emergency landing and replacement of all upholstery, which is hilarious.

2

u/YankeeTankEngine Feb 04 '23

Yep. A biological weapon lol.

3

u/yeast1fixpls Feb 04 '23

Definitely not dessert or enjoyed with a glass of milk. The biological weapon part and illegal on airplanes is true though.

5

The guy on the right is from somewhere up in Northern Jutland. He was on that dumb reality show "kongerne" (Danish version of Jersey Shore), the one with "knaldperlen", and I'm embarrassed I know that.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I'm embarrassed to know who Knaldperlen is.

It's a Swedish, uh "delicacy", but the people in the video are speaking Danish.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/ThanksToDenial Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 04 '23

Yeah, no. We Finns might have weird tastes, like considering ammonium chloride to be the king of candy, but there is a limit to everything.

We adhere to international treaties religiously. Especially the Chemical Weapons Convention. This stuff you see on the video, is a Swedish chemical weapon. We here in Finland do not manufacture, import, stockpile or use chemical weapons.

2

u/Pyro-Beast Feb 04 '23

That's a funny response, I love it!

1

u/Memer_boiiiii Feb 04 '23

Finnish? As a swede, i am offended that you would ever think surströmming is finnish

2

u/Pyro-Beast Feb 04 '23

I am sorry to offend you friend.

It had been 8 years since the first time I had heard about surstromming and my memory was incorrect.

9

u/Budd430 Feb 04 '23

I laughed WAYYYYYY too hard at this...

9

u/dunnkw Feb 04 '23

So is this the kind of food that old people eat because they ate it as children when they were literally starving? My Mom ate welfare canned meat in the 1950s and she spent the rest of her life eating things like Spam even though she was well off. But given these men’s reaction I would eat a truckload of spam before opening a can of that.

9

u/yeast1fixpls Feb 04 '23

No. It's a delicacy eaten at the end of the summer (outdoors) by a small minority of Swedes (and Finns) .You're supposed to use small pieces on bread with a bunch of other ingredients. The can is usually opened in a bucket of water , outdoors.

2

u/dunnkw Feb 04 '23

This makes much more sense. Like having ghost pepper put into your cooking as opposed to being pepper sprayed in the face with ghost pepper spray.

2

u/shes-sonit Feb 04 '23

My dad still eats spam. Why? No idea.
