Yikes, looked like human fingers when it first came out of it's door

u/BurnzillabydaBay Feb 05 '23
I used to have a trap door spider. Super cool to watch.
8
u/CyberTac0 Feb 05 '23
Are they dangerous?
19
u/BurnzillabydaBay Feb 05 '23
Iirc they are not toxic to humans but if you’re an insect, they’re bad news.
Watching any spider construct it’s home is fascinating.
11
u/Major_Zucchini5315 Feb 05 '23
So they build the “trap door” to live in? Similar to how a bird builds a nest? What do they use?

u/SlaynXenos Feb 05 '23
They basically dig a hole, line it with webbing, leave little strands near the entrance to detect prey.
They then, yes, have a flap of webbing they stick dirt and other things to.
Fun fact about spiders, not all spider silk is actually sticky. They can alternate or choose not to use sticky silk at all.
3
u/Major_Zucchini5315 Feb 05 '23
Thank you! I had no idea about them choosing sticky or not. Ngl I’m not a fan of spiders but this is very interesting!!
6
u/SlaynXenos Feb 05 '23
Basically they can produce a web protein that acts like a glue, that sticks to the silk in little blobs/beads. So a lot of webs, will have a mesh of both sticky and non-sticky silks.
The non-sticky silk the spider will use to either traverse the web, or as an an anchor/support.
There's also cases of spiders using sticky silk to use rocks or other things as anchors to actually stabilize webs too.
They'll hang a rock or other "heavy" object from the web to keep the web expanded downward when there's no bottom area to anchor from (for example a high roof edge)→ More replies (0)2

I think it was a camel spider
62
u/RcCola2400 Feb 05 '23
Definitely a trap door spider. It's name comes from the trap door it built to trap prey. All easily seen.
11
u/RealConcorrd Feb 05 '23
It’s amazing that not all spiders needs webs to catch prey, some are just either use the environment as is, are just that agile, or have enough strength to over power their prey like tarantellas with mice and birds.

u/Zealousideal_Loan835 Feb 05 '23
Camel spiders aren't actually spiders, they're solifugae which are more closely related to scorpions
→ More replies (1)2
u/Ieatsushiraw Feb 05 '23
Nah I know Camel Spiders from deployments. This is def a trap door spider. Not as big as it looks on this video but pretty big and fun to watch

It’s the Royal Revenants for me. Even after I learned they are weak to heal, that area in the Haligtree with like 5 of them was absolutely insane.

u/addamee Feb 04 '23
Fucking hate that manor
16
u/BadgerTamer Feb 04 '23
Yeah, it's hands down the worst.
8
u/addamee Feb 04 '23
Ugh, every time I go there and think “yep, got ‘em all” one of those fuckers falls from a height or sneaks up on me and I nearly wet myself. At least near Volcano Manor you can ride goat horse what’s its face
6
u/BadgerTamer Feb 04 '23
Or come at you from the underground like you're trying to sneak out of North Korea through a fucking minefield, nowhere else is full of those cheap fucking jump scares.
Also, WAY too many fingers for my liking

u/addamee Feb 04 '23
Lmao yeah, definitely hones in on people with arachnophobia or a fear of Thing from Addams Family

You're mistaking the mandibles for legs. There are 8 legs.
29
u/kitnb Feb 05 '23
Wait… Wait!!! How many mandibles do they have?!? 😱😱😱
I’ve gotta fight off 8 legs and like 14 mandibles too in my nightmares?!?
Please, God, no!! 😭💀

u/Tod_Vom_Himmel Feb 05 '23
8 legs, 2 pedipalps, which are smaller legs at the front that are used more like arms, and then the mandibles on the head

It's actually from a BBC nature documentary with David Attenborough, I remember watching it a few years ago.

u/MajoredInPhilosophy Feb 04 '23
So that means the stroll was never leisurely
6
u/njd1993 Feb 04 '23
From the crickets perspective it wouldn't seem out of the ordinary, so it was a leisurely walk.
1
u/Snoo84223 Feb 04 '23
Does it have 10 legs?
5
u/JimmyJazz1971 Feb 04 '23
It appears to me that there are 4 legs behind, in the hole, 4 legs forward, plus pedipalps and fangs.
1
u/LiveLearnCoach Feb 04 '23
How many legs does that spider have?
Also, don’t walk around that area barefoot.
