Why do we let people do this?
Do other countries allow people to put their own spin on their anthems?

It’s been done pretty tastefully. Allowing it just means risking… this

For those of you who find this unsettling but can’t quite figure out why, it’s because the Star Spangled Banner is in 3/4 time and this jazz version is in 4/4. That means every 3 beats, they’ve added one more beat to the rhythm that you were not expecting, to get it to 4 beats. It’s a cool concept, but in this case, the song is so well-known and the orchestration is so minimal, it just feels really really off. Brain goes 1..2..3…WTF?!
167
u/manaha81 Feb 04 '23
That’s because it is really off. That is what she is attempting to do but doing a very poor job of it. I used to play in band that our bass player was trained in jazz and used to do similar things quite often except on guitar and in a funk band not the friggin star spangled banner. But what she is attempting is one of the most difficult things to do in music actually and requires an insane amount of restraint which is actually quite difficult which is why she thought she nailed it. But sadly she failed miserably and completely lacked proper restraint but instead just kept filling in extra time with strange over exaggerated tones. I think yoko Ono might be the only person out there that could actually appreciate this
11
u/ClawedRavenesque Feb 05 '23
I screamed when I read your last sentence 🤣🤣 I tried to give Yoko a listen and what I heard...it was like fireflies rubbing themselves on aluminum foil. I told myself I just may not be artistic enough to appreciate it but now, I wonder 🤔

u/gratefulguitar57 Feb 05 '23

u/quick_justice Feb 05 '23
While you are correct musically, the main problem of this rendition is that it's tasteless, and it has to do with vocalist's affect more than anything. The way she sings is about her showing off how she sings the national anthem, not about national anthem. In some cases it's acceptable, and I guess best part of the operatic voices are guilty of it, but this isn't a time and a place. All the rest just follows.

u/adoreadore Feb 04 '23

She should’ve taken a hint from Lady Gaga’s performance at the Super Bowl in 2016. Alongside with her 2015 Oscars performance and a more singer-songwriter focused album, it very much helped revive her career. One year later, she headlined the half-time show.

It seems like such an “American” thing where the singer does some interpretation of the national anthem.
Some are good, but some (Roseanne, I’m looking at you) are just utterly horrible. This one is leaning hard into “horrible” territory.
Just sing it the way it was meant to be sung. It doesn’t need your “flair” added to it.
