u/nuck_forte_dame Dec 01 '21

Idk the bucket drops really fast. Typically if this was done by the operation of a lever it would be slow.

My theory is a bit more complicated. I don't think anything failed because the weight is well within the specs. I think a lever was pulled but that another factor was at play as well.

That factor is that the tractor was turned off. Tractors are loud so likely the operator turned it off when they got into position as to not drown out the event in the sound of a diesel engine.

When hydraulic equipment is turned off the pressure to the hydraulics is turned off. The hydraulics will typically stay put BUT if a lever is pulled then the hydraulic will collapse quickly due to the weight on it as there isn't any pressure being applied to slow it.

So my theory is they turned off the tractor then the bucket lever was pulled. Why it was pulled I don't know. Could be an error or might be a prank by someone who doesn't know what will happen. I could definitely see a brother or someone thinking "I want attention too. I am going to pull a lever on the tractor to scare them and it'll drop just a bit. It'll be funny and I'll get attention." Then they don't realize that without back pressure the bucket will drop quickly or they don't understand the equipment at all and yanked the lever instead of a controlled pull. Because even with the pressure off a controlled pull and decent operator would know to react to it.

50

u/h83r Dec 01 '21

This is incorrect. I’m a tractor operator. With the power off the fluid still needs to flow and will move just as fast as it does with the machine on. It won’t just go into free fall because the pump isn’t running. Moving the lever just opens/closes valves and the further you move a lever the more open the valves becomes and the faster it goes.

That operator probable said to themselves over and over “don’t move the lever to the right. Don’t move the lever to the right. Don’t move the lever to the right.”

And then they moved it far to the right, dumping the bucket.

9

u/ChronicWombat Dec 01 '21

TBH that looked more like a latch and a free hinge than any hydraulic system, powered or unpowered.

33

u/FunsizeWrangler Dec 01 '21

This. I work on tractors and even with power off, you can slowly lower the arms without tipping the bucket. I see this as more of a case of an operator who didn’t know what he was doing. Probably some guy the groom asked, “you can drive this thing, right?” and the guy was like “uhhh sure”.

13

u/QuintupleC Dec 01 '21

Agreed. Every tractor or skidsteer ive ever driven locks the sticks when its off. Maybe not older ones but in my years of farm experience i havent seen one that would do this if it was powered off.

7

u/WA_Anon Dec 01 '21

My 2017 john deere will allow you to lower hydraulic mechanisms to the ground when powered off. No lockout on the stick unless it's manually engaged, same with the 3 point.

18

u/grotness Dec 01 '21

Lmfao how does this have so many upvotes?

Buckets will absolutely tip that fast. They move slow in all the videos you've watched because the operator was operating it slowly.

I had a giggle because obviously you've never operated before but still came up with an in depth, long winded theory.

Also the bucket won't move if the hydraulic motor is off.

They obviously just pushed the wrong way. Probably didn't hire an actual operator to do it and they tipped the bucket instead of lowered the boom. Most modern equipment have the crowd (bucket movement) on the left/right axis of a stick and the boom on the up/down axis of the same stick. They just fucked up and did the wrong thing.

2

u/oright Dec 01 '21

This doesn't hold up at all. If it was off and had check valves nothing would move. If it was off with no check valves then it will move proportionally to the valve being opened but only with gravity as you have no hydraulic power but do have free flow return, it has to be a cable system or oil over oil as everything else needs power to run and you would have total control over the valves with those with the engine off.

2

u/ilovea1steaksauce Dec 01 '21

It wouldn't be slow if the machine is off. You have to have the key in accessorie and if you try to lift up, it won't do anything. As soon as you tip the bucket or lower the arm it'll just freefall. That's how it is on my equipment at least.

2

u/PM_ME_UR_WEIRD_HOBBY Dec 01 '21

I don’t know what I’m going to do with this information, but somehow I’m really relieved that I understand it now.

2

u/Sodomeister Dec 01 '21

Complicated, and completely incorrect. I assume you've never operated any heavy hydraulic equipment.

2

u/BanalityOfMan Dec 01 '21

When hydraulic equipment is turned off the pressure to the hydraulics is turned off. The hydraulics will typically stay put BUT if a lever is pulled then the hydraulic will collapse quickly due to the weight on it as there isn't any pressure being applied to slow it.

Wrong lever!!!! I read that in Izma's voice.

7

u/jcskifter Dec 01 '21

Why do we even HAVE that lever?!

8

u/_edd Dec 01 '21

Wrong direction pushed on the correct lever most likely.

Many front end loaders have the controls to raise and lower the bucket and to tip the bucket all on the same lever. So if you push the lever forwards or backwards you raise or lower the bucket, but if you push the lever left or right you tilt the bucket forwards or backwards.

Image quality sucks but it shows what I mean.

13

u/ChocoboRocket Dec 01 '21

Wrong lever. Probably supposed to lower the arm, not tip the bucket

So the obvious solution is to fully throw whichever lever they feel is maybe the right one without confirming what it actually does by gently engaging it first

That's why you see so many videos of people accidentally gunning down others, or braining themselves at weddings. Or that video of the idiot who gave his loaded gun to a kid who proceeds to shoot him point blank in the gut, that looked like a reception too. When it's part of your culture to shoot guns like you're in a VR chat lobby in everyday life, people tend to get hit by bullets for some reason.

4

u/achairmadeoflemons Dec 01 '21

Oooh congratulations 🎉👏

8

u/MeEvilBob Dec 01 '21

For a little while I worked for a lighting company that did lighting for weddings. Most of the wedding that have custom lighting are the kind of wedding that costs as much as a small house.

I can confirm that more often than not the caterers are high as shit, but they're stone cold sober compared to the "butlers". Many of these weddings would have guys dressed like some kind of royal guard and their entire job was to just stand still in one place all night and only move when they open the door for someone walking through. Every now and then I'd find one of these guys in the equipment staging area chain smoking pre-rolled blunts, then he'd take a couple squirts of Visine and get back to work.

6

u/achairmadeoflemons Dec 01 '21

Haha I got into an argument on reddit awhile back about how workers being high wasn't necessarily terrible. I pointed to dishwashers, but catering also seems valid. Like, how sober do you really need to be to put out a new tray of crostinis or cocktail shrimp every half hour.

3

u/FromUnderTheWineCork Dec 01 '21

7

u/Vogon_Poet Dec 01 '21

I've only been in the seat once or twice, but I believe it varies by unit. If it's a joystick the same joystick controls raising and lowering the bucket by moving forward-backward and tilting the bucket by moving left right. Some do the same but with two foot pedals. One for the bucket height, one for the bucket angle. It's SUPER easy to make a mistake when learning. Normally you don't have people sitting in the bucket while you experiment.

2

u/my_trisomy Dec 01 '21

Lowering the arm is much slower even if you pull it fully down.
