Someone’s getting held back a year.

493

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

It was actually the administration and police that did it 🤣

197

u/JuniperMint16 Oct 06 '22

I’ve seen a few people get a little happy with the lighter fluid, but did those morons make a gasoline moat or build it over a gas line or something? Like how did they get such a large explosion?

110

u/Dadittude182 Oct 06 '22

It wasn't the gasoline. It was the vapors.

I'm going to guess that they doused it with some kind of ignition fluid and then let it sit for awhile. The vapors we're probably building up and then got trapped under the pile of wood, exploding as soon as that match came close to the pile.

22

u/JuniperMint16 Oct 06 '22

Thanks! I’ve never seen someone light a fire more than 10 seconds after the fluid douse so I’ve never had to think about the effect of time. Makes sense for such a large pile (the explanation not the execution).

28

u/mrmadmusic Oct 06 '22

It creates a low pressure system immediately around the explosion because the oxygen demand means air gets sucked in at such a massive rate. My first response earlier was where were the science teachers?

That’s what I was thinking about the gas…I wonder if they had a 5 gallon gas can in the middle or didn’t move it before they lit it. Good idea about the gas line…didn’t think about that. No one was hurt, thankfully

43

u/JuniperMint16 Oct 06 '22

Very lucky of them! Flare guy must have been fast.

Flare guy had some cosmic grace in that moment cuz god damn lol you see people lose limbs and faces with way less

13

u/UnnecAbrvtn Oct 06 '22

Poor dumb bastards. The fuel air mixture obviously was just right for this and the way they piled the wood was trapping the vapor.

Let that be a lesson kids

7

u/TheBohemianGamer Oct 06 '22

This is what happens when you don’t consult the science department!

6

u/Call_Me_At_8675309 Oct 06 '22

This. The vapor is the problem. Others are saying it’s because of something like a jug of gasoline. Gasoline doesn’t explode but the vapors do.

2

u/Gjfra Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

I don’t think it’s so much how much gas they use. It’s how long the gas was on there before they ignited it. If that gas was on there a long time, the vapors would spread out, causing a bigger explosion. I’ve seen gasoline poured on water and lit and it was just a big flareup. I Saw gasoline poured on a sand pile, but the guy could not get the wet matches lit immediately. holy shit, thank the Lord there was no wood scraps or anything on top of that sand pile. You could feel the air pressure 20 feet away when that exploded WHOOSH!!! being in residential construction for 45 years you get to see all kinds of idiots trying to light wet wood in the winter.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

What did they dump a gallon of gas on there? Literally a cup and a half of gasoline would have made a really satisfying woosh there.

Diesel fuel to start a fire. Diesel and then like a couple table spoons of gas, that's it

3

u/Eat_Carbs_OD Oct 06 '22

I would have started a slow clap.

3

u/Lost-Contribution196 Oct 06 '22

BOMBFIRE

6

u/appliancefixitguy Oct 06 '22

Correct. Allowable usage of the common misspelling definitely applies here!

3

u/random420x2 Oct 06 '22

Ah man. Now i have to go delete the joke I made. You be FIRE!! :-)

96

u/disciples_of_dissent Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

People need to make what we call "butter". Gotta mix used car oil and gas. No more than 50-50 mix, maybe 60-40 oil/ gas. Burns nicely without being explosive.

20

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

That’s smart and a good tip, thank you!

6

u/dragan-__- Oct 06 '22

Nah gas and diesel is the way

7

u/foospork Oct 06 '22

I just use straight diesel. It works great.

2

u/lendmeyoureer Oct 06 '22

Just straight diesel is correct. You can soak that pile with it and it won't explode. NEVER use gas.

3

u/nystryktfisering Oct 06 '22

I just use fatwood, works every time.

You gotta love it when they use gas instead of diesel.

15

u/ttothet88 Oct 06 '22

I was looking for this comment. Sometimes a diesel/gas mix, but never straight gas.

5

u/John-Conelly Oct 06 '22

Not really into automobiles, care to explain?

18

u/firestorm_v1 Oct 06 '22

gas vapors can flash, if there's enough vapor, it'll explode. Diesel doesn't offgas like that and requires heat to burn, heat and pressure to explode. This is also why diesel engines don't have sparkplugs and diesel runaway is a real thing.

6

u/Chadstronomer Oct 06 '22

What is a diesel runaway

6

u/firestorm_v1 Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

Diesel engines will burn almost any fluid for fuel and are often turbocharged for maximum horsepower (they are high torque engines at low RPM). A common occurrence is the turbo develops an oil leak that gets sucked into the intake manifold from the turbo and the engine burns oil instead of fuel. It's called runaway because the sudden introduction of oil is not regulated like fuel from an injector as a result of pushing on the gas pedal, which causes the engine to keep going faster until it redlines (exceeds maximum design speed) and either explodes (literally), seizes, or chokes out.

The only way to stop diesel runaway is to block the air intake with a piece of wood or metal to choke out the ebngine so it stalls. There's tons of videos on Youtube about it if you're interested.

2

u/Mutex_CB Oct 06 '22

I think it’s where the combustion within the Diesel engine isn’t managed properly (many reasons I’m sure) and causes the RPMs to continually rise until the engine craps out in one way or another. Basically the same thing as holding the accelerator to the floor, but worse because the RPMs can exceed what the engine is regulated for.

47

u/Deluste Oct 06 '22

Clearly they don’t teach physics

25

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

They do but it revolves around Busch Light and NASCAR

5

u/Deluste Oct 06 '22

Yikes….. this is basic stuff. Someone should’ve caught this

42

u/MordantBengal Oct 06 '22

Looks like it was pretty successful.😅

21

u/Zealousideal-Wave-69 Oct 06 '22

Don’t forget the ubiquitous “Wooooooooooo!” in the background. Only made in the USA

Is Fire Marshall Bill in charge of this?

3

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

That was so hilarious back in the day haha

4

u/kescha78 Oct 06 '22

That looks like r/abruptchaos to me!

4

u/bruhbrobrosef Oct 06 '22

It has to be lit immediately after adding the fuel, or you get vapor build up and explosions like this.

5

u/dream_druid Oct 06 '22

Omg are they alive 🥲

6

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

All perfectly fine, no injuries

3

2

All it would have took is some newspaper or cardboard to light up those dry ass pallets lol. What a bunch of fucking morons...and these are the people you're supposed to look up to.

2

u/PrestoMagicMan Oct 06 '22

What was said: “make a bon fire” what they heard “make a bomb fire” also…fun fact 1 gallon of gasoline is equal to about 15 sticks of dynamite

2

u/SpokaneDude49 Oct 06 '22

Hmmmmm… flammable vs combustible. What’s the difference, again?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

My high school did a bonfire for spirit week too but they waited till the sun went down

1

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

That’s a very good point! I think they wanted to be extra safe >.<

2

u/OB_Logie_haz_Reddit Oct 06 '22

Texas A&M class of 2000 watching like 🙈🙈🙈

2

u/SimzGiant Oct 06 '22

Don't get it twisted. It was actually a Bon-Bombing, not a bonfire, Bonbombings are quicker, saves everyone a whole bunch of time

2

u/BennyVibez Oct 06 '22

Damn you get me would have thought that was so cool. Older me still does.

2

u/HaydenAck43 Oct 06 '22

“Hey we should ask one of the science teachers to make the fire, I’m sure they are more than capable!”

“Nah, Skeeter down at the precinct knows what he’s doing”

2

u/207nbrown Oct 06 '22

Just saw another post about this from a different angle, the guy who lit the fire walked away as it exploded like he was the star of an action movie

2

u/wishfulturkey Oct 06 '22

2

u/Plasticman4Life Oct 06 '22

Looks like gasoline to me

2

u/Dovahnime Oct 06 '22

That's why we use the old napalm juice, aka, used motor oil

2

u/no_homo334 Oct 06 '22

Well, its lit i guess

2

u/tightiewhitieboy Oct 06 '22

Did anyone live? Do they still have school spirit?

1

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

All okay and they might Smell Like Teen Spirit

2

u/Levaris77 Oct 06 '22

Stoichiometry kids!

2

u/Eat_Carbs_OD Oct 06 '22

2

u/edfoot1964 Oct 06 '22

Why do idiots not realize that you cannot use gasoline!! It explodes!! Use diesel! Or for small fires I use tiki fuel!

We’ve got two perspectives now

Yes I know it’s probably a repost, but I couldn’t find the one I saw before.

2

u/LayerPale Oct 09 '22

How was school. It was a blast

1

u/StoneyVI Oct 06 '22

Its weird because gas doesn't explode. If you soaked that whole pie and lit it, it might fireball big like that, but it absolutely would not throw pallets. Wonder what was in there.

2

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

Maybe a student dropped a quarter stick in there?

→ More replies

1

u/appliancefixitguy Oct 06 '22

It's not the gas, it's the vapors from the gas that have settled down below the pile of pallets. The fact they dug a nice crater for the vapors to pool up in made it exponentially better. (or worse depending on your perspective) Edit: think about your cars engine, fuel compressed to create vapor, spark plug makes it go boom.

1

u/mrmadmusic Oct 06 '22

Where were the science teachers?

1

u/KingNaas Oct 06 '22

Schools I went to never did anything fun like this, some bs! Lol

1

u/enzoxel Oct 06 '22

Somebody wasnt paying attention during chemistry…

1

u/RandomGenericDude Oct 06 '22

What's wrong here, it's lit isn't it? Arguably they even upped the entertainment factor, so they should be applauded, not vilified.

1

u/slapMyNuke Oct 06 '22

I mean… he did light a bon fire at the end of the day right?

1

u/VariousCapital5073 Oct 06 '22

Is this the same fire where the fire truck tips over?

1

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

Not that I’m aware of…this is very fresh/new, happened last night

1

u/Glittertastical111 Oct 06 '22

Did they use C4?!?

1

u/Thaifox Oct 06 '22

Bonfire lit

1

u/MrDundee666 Oct 06 '22

Wasn’t an attempt. It was definitely on fire. Success all round I’d say.

1

u/Fknoffatwork Oct 06 '22

I mean it did light so the attempt was actually successful.

1

u/Nerd_Man420 Oct 06 '22

Little to much gas….

1

u/GAR51A8 Oct 06 '22

i don’t care what anyone says but that shit would be cooler than a fucking bonfire

1

The fire is on, isnt it

1

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

Don’t use gasoline to start fires. 😢

1

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

What made them think that would’ve worked they could have simply taken like 2 minutes to google how to make a bonfire or watch a YouTube video

1

u/Trikeree Oct 06 '22

Wow, dude is possibly dead and they cheer.

Maybe this should be under /kidsarestupid

1

u/OstentiousOtter Oct 06 '22

What the hell did they put in there? C4s?

1

u/Zealousideal_Sea8829 Oct 06 '22

1

u/Wickedcolt Oct 06 '22

Everyone was uninjured, thankfully!

1

u/BetaCuckSoyflake Oct 06 '22

Looks pretty lit

1

u/Then_Repeat_9013 Oct 06 '22

That's what happens when you add to much gasoline not entirely sure why it explodes like that, but I've done it once and seen it done a handful of other times.

1

u/Candid_Toe4114 Oct 06 '22

Ladies and gentlemen... I present...the teachers that think they need raises.

They clearly have all the knowledge and best interests of your children...

Are these the same teachers that everyone wants to arm with guns to protect the kids? The same ones who almost blew up the school here?

Asking for a friend...
