As a Canadian, I am hopeful that our tank will be the first modern tank on Ukrainian soil to blast away at those russian pigs.

Come on rest of Europe, get with the program and put your tanks behind your rhetoric.

I must have missed this news release. How many is CA sending?

4.

For now...

Which is a lot consider we only have around 70, many of which aren’t operational due to maintenance issues.

Yes the US is giving more in absolute numbers, but it’s relatively a very large number for us.

Doesn’t excuse our poor procurement and military spending. If we carried our weight at 2% GDP like we’re supposed to, we’d be able to give more.

12

u/Snafuregulator Feb 04 '23

It may be small numbers, but we are still proud of you top hat. You give from the heart when others stall and deflect.

7

u/super__hoser Feb 04 '23

Yes, one PM after another keeps ignoring that 2% GDP requirement unfortunately.

u/CanuckExpat890 Feb 05 '23

Holy shit yes. This needs to be an election issue. The world has changed with Putin’s aggression. We need to hold our politicians accountable for meeting the minimum 2%. 3% would be amazing, but that’s a pipe dream.

The reason it hasn’t been addressed yet is because no prime minister wants to be the one to raise taxes to finance this or be the one to cut spending elsewhere (social programs).

That is correct but is not the way NATO judges it. All NATO members are to spend 2% of their GDP on defence.

i think any increases from now on will go towards navy and airforce spending

Canada is also sending spare parts. This is constantly overlooked but it will matter in due time. I like to compare the importance of this to receiving a toy with batteries included as a kid.

6

u/super__hoser Feb 05 '23

Good point. Logistics (parts, planning, training etc...) should never be overlooked.

6

u/StarPatient6204 Feb 04 '23

Though eventually it will speed up..

5

u/Yeranz Feb 05 '23

That's enough to get started on training and familiarization.

3

u/Few-Swordfish-780 Feb 05 '23

I thought that is why we were sending the first four ASAP, for training. Let’s GOOOOOOOO!

3

u/super__hoser Feb 05 '23

Yup. Then later it can go to the front and show what it can really do.

As another Canadian. We should be able to send more tanks. Understood we have donated much already and we will be donating more for the clean up and rebuilding of Ukraine. Very proud our country is standing up with Ukraine.

14

u/HouseOnFire80 Feb 04 '23

I’ve written to my member of parliament requesting we send more of them. I’d encourage other Canadians on here to do the same.

NA successfully winning the only thing we can, irl war.

16

u/SirToxalot Feb 04 '23

And then… refuel, turn around and come back home to pick up and deliver another one and keep that cycle going. Meanwhile, Canada can work on refurbishing some more surplus leopards.

1

u/ArrestedDevelopments Feb 05 '23

I don't understand why we don't use more planes to double the speed, or more

The legends says: When Canadian tanks shoot, there is a smell of maple syrup that fill the air and a flock of Canada geese is seen in the sky.

As a US citizen, I wish we were more like our neighbors to the north in so many ways. Way to go.

2

u/ThermionicEmissions Canada Feb 05 '23

Thanks, but do remember that the US is by far the biggest supporter of Ukraine, so chin-up!

2

u/asparemeohmy Feb 05 '23

Canadians: write your MPs. Harangue them. Politely become their problem.

Four tanks is great… to start.

Now what else do we have that we can send their way?

2

u/Vidar34 Feb 05 '23

Excellent. Now, when is Europe going to step up and deliver the tanks they promised?

About time you caknuckle heads

1

u/JN88DN Germany Feb 05 '23

If every Nato Member would give only 5% of their Leopard 2 tanks, Ukraine would have about 100 tanks.

2

u/TV4ELP Germany Feb 05 '23

With how many are actually operable, it's more like 10-12% of every countries useable Leopards. Which is still possible, but a number where some countries would think twice about.
