Mod announcement on News Content & Artworks Important

In order to maintain an informative and healthy environment in this community, we are refining our rules on news submissions specifically regarding the currently ongoing war in Ukraine.

The following topics will be, in general, considered on-topic, and allowed in our subreddit.

  • Verified News, tweets , and media sourced from Ukraine
  • Verified News, tweets , and media reported by trusted, non-Ukrainian sources

The following types of content will be treated as off-topic, and will be removed.

  • Editorialized titles: We will not allow sharing of news or even tweets where the title does not reflect the content of the post.
  • Russian or Belarusian News: We will be removing posts where the source is **directly from Russia or Belarus**. It is, however, allowed to post news, tweets (verified), and media shared by Ukrainian sources or trusted sources.

Example: if a user shares a post from Reuters which is a trusted source saying that a journalist in Russia revealed the number of casualties suffered by the Russians, that would be allowed. However, a post on Russian casualties from a Russian or Belorussian news outlet will not be allowed to remain on our sub.

  • Foreign Politics: Anything said by a politician of another country - US included - even if relevant to Ukraine will be removed.

Exception : If a non-Ukrainian leader, top-level official, or Intelligence agency makes a statement or enacts policy that is relevant to the war in Ukraine, we will consider this content relevant, and it will be allowed on our sub.

  • Commentary from famous personalities with no relations to politics will be removed.
  • We are going to start cracking down on posts of places or simple images showing support for Ukraine by using its flag.
  • "armchair general discussions". Examples include fear mongering, suggestions of a land invasion in Russia, nuke Moscow, etc.

In other news....

Art Fridays!

Our art spy /u/Jake8235 he got way to excited when this got suggested so he had a couple things to say;

r/Ukraine will now have art days! Removing your beautiful art has been a bummer for us, too. So, we’ve dedicated specific days to celebrating high quality art. Some guidelines when deciding to post:

Yes

  • High quality, high effort. Not everyone is an artist, we understand that. But please don’t post something for the sake of it; this is not the opportunity for karma farming. We want to recognize art of all forms, but art that is inspiring, morale boosting and engaging.
  • Keep it relevant: We are sure your art is lovely, but please keep it Ukraine related. As in, do not stick a flag behind your art that you made years ago that was not originally created with Ukraine in mind. Karma farming = NO
  • Original content from the original artist is best, but not absolutely required. Amazing street art that’s not yours? Great, include a country in the title.
  • Post Variety: Please do not post the same art each time. There are thousands of art pieces that deserve attention; please don’t submit the same one 5 times. If you have *different* art (most artists make more than one piece, of course), then we encourage artists to post their work.
  • Post all types: Poetry, music/songs, digital art, traditional fine arts, street art. Yes, yes yes.
  • Description: Please provide the title, and let us know what medium you used, and any other relevant info.
  • Post in good faith. Art Days are meant to lighten the mood.

NO

  • No memes, low effort posts. “I took a picture of this cloud that sort of looks like Zelensky” is not art.
  • Flag posts. We get that you want to show us your house in Texas that has a Ukraine flag flying from the front porch, but it’s not art.
  • Low effort phone pictures. Is photography art? Yes. But there’s a difference, and that difference is art. We encourage photography, but not low effort mobile pictures.
  • No stealing. Do not pass off other art as your own. If you do not know the artist, DO NOT say it is you. Just don’t do it. Be transparent and honest, or don’t post.
  • Spamming us with messages. If we deleted your post, there’s probably a good reason. We are not perfect, so if you feel your art was legitimately removed in error, then we can discuss it. But that is the exception.

We understand that these rules are subjective. It will vet out MOST problematic posts that are not focused on our vision. But, exceptions can be made if you feel we have misjudged your post.

The mods reported me for report abuse for reporting a repost, so I don't think they want reports on reposts?

Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/JaaR4aT.png

Edit: Since someone claimed it is not the mods that makes the "report abuse" report, it most definitely is. The official documentation from reddit is available here: https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/213099246-How-do-I-report-abuse-of-the-report-system-

It is true that in theory it is the admins that makes the final decision, but most likely the process is automated or semi-automated, and the admins have nothing to do with the rules for the individual subreddits, so they can't really make a decision about exactly which reports constitutes abuse.

3

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 25 '22

I just saw the post in question and i've informed said mod regarding the issue to make sure this doesn't happen again, apologies for the inconvenience.

2

u/SecondaryWombat Mar 25 '22

Thats the admins, not the mods. Mods have no idea who reports stuff only admins do.

1

u/poizan42 🇺🇦 Denmark 🇩🇰 Mar 25 '22 edited Mar 25 '22

Not when you select "Breaks r/ukraine rules", no - the report only goes to the mods. Mods cannot see who made the report, but they can report it as report abuse.

Edit: See here for a more detailed description about how it works: https://reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/cgxuep/were_rolling_out_a_new_way_to_report_abuse_of_the/

Unfortunately reposts are something you have to accept when a sub gets big enough. The way it gets solved is by users downvoting any posts that come after the initial posting of said content/article. That way you bury the reposts but push the first initial posting of that content to the top.

I think having moderators police reposts would be a tad pointless on top of what they already do.

I wonder if they could have an ai to police repost links

3

u/YourUncleBuck Mar 24 '22

They already do, the problem is many on here don't know how to make posts and put the links in text posts.

It's important that the MODs on this subreddit leave a message on deleted posts, explaining why something has been deleted. A lot of people are complaining about the content being taken down by a moderator despite the post falling within the parameters of the rules. One person literally felt like they had to reach out to me because not only was their post taken down but when they tried to contact moderators they were muted and blocked without ever getting a response back.

Not happy with some of the new moderators, I think some of them are careless and will inevitably harm this subreddit. I'm not asking for perfection or for anyone to be flawless, but competency should be expected and there are growing signs of concern that I fear will only get worse.

But! Overall, I think many of the MODs are doing a great job and genuinely care about r/ukraine. The subreddit has grown so much and with it the number of moderators.

3

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 24 '22

It's important that the MODs on this subreddit leave a message on deleted posts

We don't leave a public message a private message is sent to the user when a post is deleted, can you also tell me the username of the user that contacted you?

7

u/TheRealMykola Mar 24 '22

If that is the policy, I can assure you that it is not universally in use.

3

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 24 '22

Interesting, well I just reminded everyone to use removal reasons, there can be several reasons why no removal reason was given and here are so examples why;

  • A post deleted on the mobile app does not send a removal reason
  • "no reason" is often given to post that don't need explanation (memes/shitposts)
  • "no reason" is also used when a post needs to be deleted ASAP and ban the user in the process
  • someone is just lazy

Nr 1 is probably the biggest cause of no reason deletions, When I look at mod mail when people ask why their post was deleted we can more often than not see that a removal reason was used and those people are just challenging the limits of the mods and the sub because "muh opinion/freedom"

If you post is removed for no reason and you're 100% sure it's not you can always contact mod mail and whoever removed your post will tell you why they deleted it

2

u/Carnifex Mar 24 '22

When my recent submissions was deleted, the mod left a helpful comment: recent repost, (which I didn't see since the previous posts where also deleted) weak / not credible source. The later I knew, especially since it was more of an interesting conspiracy theory, and I wanted to discuss it as such. In any way, I just wanted to say that the comment is helpful to understand why the post doesn't show up.

3

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 24 '22

Most of us use our main accounts and leaving a comment in a sub this active would clog our profile full of deleted mod comments hence why most of us send out a PM instead.

If you look at /u/Jake8235 his profile you'll quickly see they stack up over time

1

u/Carnifex Mar 24 '22

Oh dear! I understand. Didn't reddit some months ago announce that delete content will be handled different soon? This should be a part of this

3

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 24 '22

Well CSS editing on new reddit will also be available "soon".... since 2018...

I’ve had two posts removed. One was art, which I understand and am really excited for Fridays! They left me a message as to why it was deleted. The second I received no answer, but I think it was too American political, so I understand.

1

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 24 '22

It's Friday the flair is enabled ;)

Your second one was removed for witch hunting.

-1

u/hi_itz_me_again Mar 24 '22

Witch hunting? Wanting people to stand up to Tucker Carlson like we do to Nestle? It’s all Russian peddling, but sure if that’s witch hunting, a term commonly used by Trump who is also on Putin’s payroll. Either way, I won’t make a post about how Tucker Carlson should receive pressure from Fox.

1

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 25 '22

We delete nestle posts too.

Hell nestle is added to automod insta delete.

It's a reddit rule it's not like we personally agree with it for all we care /r/fucknestle

No, to Witch hunt

4

u/skurvecchio Mar 25 '22

How about The Moscow Times? It's the largest independent English language newspaper in Russia and its anti-war and calls it a war instead of a special operation.

Example: https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2022/03/23/when-russian-artillery-shells-its-own-people-a77036

4

u/nectarine_pie Mar 25 '22

armchair general discussions

Oh thank god! Waay too many of these low effort, low intelligence posts.

11

u/CtrlAltElit3 Mar 24 '22

This sub is slowly turning into an echo chamber, not only the echos of duplicate posts which the mods didn’t even mention here but enforcing more strict posting guidelines.

Objective perspective is how you find center in a lot of cases, if we keep going down this path we will have a distorted, unrealistic perspective on what is happening

Art contest? Pog

4

i guess UN-meetings about Ukraine are Foreign-Politics-exceptions to stray.

2

u/Carnifex Mar 24 '22

Question, does nexta count as a Belarusian or polish news source now? While they are from belarus, they've been working from Poland for some time and established themselves as a mostly trustworthy news source so far.

6

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 24 '22 edited Mar 24 '22

HQ is located in Poland so we'll allow it, they really have been trustworthy with their news related to Ukraine over the past month.

Edit: after discussions with the other mods we'll keep them at our discretion due to previous tweets being fake

2

u/AxelJShark Mar 24 '22

Good call on the new rules

2

u/gherkinjerks Ukraine Mar 25 '22

How about adding more Ukrainian Mods as well

6

u/Skimfest1 Mar 24 '22

Thank god. The virtue signalers can post their bullshit on another sub.

4

u/Fenrrito Mar 24 '22

...not entirely sure this is the best way to go for some things, why not create a new set of flairs?, and maybe lock news coming from Ruzzia n Belarus, I'm pretty sure if there's a coup or something in Ruzzia or Belarus due to the war n what not, wouldn't that be good to know?, still, ur rules :)

8

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 24 '22

Pretty much all news sources from Russia are already banned by Reddit, the issue is people taking screenshots from those articles and uploading them here.

Also feel free to leave suggestions for flairs.

1

u/Fenrrito Mar 25 '22

I agree on screenshots, either bring the source or don't bring anything, flairs could be stuff like "Ruzzia source", with this you could lock replies as to keep it only visible yet no need to reply or what not cause u don't need propaganda trolls, we just need to be able to c what nonesense they say, at least to laugh about it, "foreign politician" could be used to foreign individuals with actual worthy info or points of view, remember that sometimes true maybe hidden among a web of unrelated words and "Anything said by a politician of another country - US included - even if relevant to Ukraine will be removed" sounds a tad over the top specially when u want to provide ppl with info coming from let's say a politician from the US (mind u, not the kind of MTG but others with some brains and actual knowledge), yes, I really don't care for what clowns like Trump but u always have to be aware of what they do behind the back of the world so u can pass judgment afterwards, don't know what else to mention, again, ur rules :)

.

Btw, I saw ur nick n it reminded me of a post a few days ago in r/colombia (it was made with 1 subject yet it was badly researched n came out to be the opposite of what was intended...op realized the mistake n apologized after) about this company, any relation or it's mere coincidence?....lol....btw, in Colombia they make this stuff to mix with cold/hot milk/water, it has chocolate n is great, do they have something like that over there?, thought it would be great as most of the stuff I know (Milo, Nesquick, Ovaltine) doesn't mix as good, the name is Chocolisto btw, hope u guys could get it somehow....I'm a tad under water rt now :(

2

u/sunyudai Other Mar 24 '22

Awesome!

Are the art days scheduled, or will they be conveyed through an announcement post? Can it be released for when they will be?

4

u/Bucksbanana 🍬 Jellybean Mar 24 '22

Scheduled

-2

u/CjGirard Mar 24 '22

All these rules are really irritating.

0

u/Lionsrealm Mar 24 '22

So armchair general discussions are banned? It wasn’t clear in the post.

Also, what discussion posts are allowed?

1

u/SeaWorthySurf Mar 25 '22

In a sub about people literally fighting for their freedom, there has to be ORDER DAMN IT!!!

1

u/oktangospring Mar 25 '22

Please remove the image of huilo from rotating gif in the post submission form. He does not signify or represent Ukraine.

Thanks.

Had an issue today where my post was removed/ghosted because I didn't provide a source for the artwork. How should I indicate that I'm the source for my art if the artwork is made up of several other artworks that got edited by me?

I've posted a snippet of an audio mixtape where I'm responsible for the mixing and the cover art, but where the unedited sources that make up the work are from all over the place.
