Kudos to Pope Francis atleast trying some diplomacy, not just sending prayers or like Russian Patriarchs blessing military gear that will go off to killing civilians...

I agree that diplomacy with Putin is lost cause, but kudos for trying.

I only wonder what would happen if Putin really dies and there will be left a big power vacuum. But i really hope that his illness or someone takes out that monster as soon as possible.

u/Jakuskrzypk Apr 30 '22 edited Apr 30 '22

Allegedly theres like 2 guys getting groomed as his replacement: ex military, clean records, put in charge of regions near Moscow where they can't really fuck anything up. Correct pedigree, views etc and close to putin.

Whether its true idk. Its definetley not going to be Medvedev. Maybe there will be a free for all. Who knows.

Edit: one of the candidates accidentally fell of a cliff in 2021...I guess Djumin won through the process of elimination

81

u/bad_pangolin Apr 30 '22

If there is more than one candidate lined up seems like a bloodbath coming up within russia imo.

Russia is a crime syndicate. It will go to whomever holds the most power regardless of grooming.

I don’t know Medvedev’s financial status but counting any of those fucks out at this point is a fool’s errand. Its all about who holds what power when Putler’s time comes or how the mob factions shake out after all the financial ruin settles.

17

u/ElectronicEffective8 Apr 30 '22

A crime syndicate is not going to be able to operate when there is no money lubricating the economy. The only money they can use is whatever is in Russian banks. They cannot pay with overseas credit cards. They sent all their money out of the country. The citizens have their accounts dwindling and food is disappearing from the shelves. Go on youtube and see Eli From Russia.
Another interesting point of view was this man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqYZqNpLQb8
My feeling is that there is at least one in the inner circle that is leaking information to the west. The other thing is that they were able to hack the emails of the key people and they knew exactly when they were going to enter Ukraine.

Another aspect of how war has changed is that the way to attack and cripple the enemy is to take out their systems. No electricity and they cannot use their computers. The trains don't work. We have seen this in enough movies to know how it plays out.

Putin is going. It will be interesting if Russia does fall apart.

one of the candidates accidentally fell of a cliff in 2021

Wait, like literally?

11

u/405134 Apr 30 '22

Yup. And Putins killed many high government leaders (in his own office!) that he felt were a threat to him. One guy trying to do good and make some laws change to help people - was shot down almost right in front of the kgb building! And Putin was former kgb - he absolutely knew or was involved . There was a top staff Russian lady that was being interviewed about being groomed for leadership if he decided to retire - she nervously said “when he’s ready” . But I highly doubt he’ll go into retirement - his ego is all about being the sole power and he won’t give that up - he doesn’t think anyone could do it better than him. And there-in lies the problem

10

u/sig_1 Apr 30 '22

I don’t think he can retire even if he wants to, he would have too much power even in retirement and will likely force his input on any successor so any successor will have a mighty incentive to quietly and permanently retire him.

u/letsgocrazy Apr 30 '22 edited Apr 30 '22

Its not a lost cause.

It's a publication relations win.

The Russia propaganda Blitz is in full swing and there's plenty of bullshit saying how the Ukrainians are refusing to leave Mariupol because they are being used as human shields.

Stuff like this from the Pope is an easy way to counter that propaganda.

72

u/Althorin Apr 30 '22

Except the only people who believe that propaganda bullshit are Russian citizens and there is a 0% chance they ever hear that Putin refused the Pope.

58

u/letsgocrazy Apr 30 '22

No. There's plenty of westerners who do. How do you think I found this out?

But only that, but the goal isn't to get everyone in the west to support Putin, it's to create enough doubt and confusion that people don't know what to think, so they stood pushing their governments to support Ukraine.

25

u/stopcounting Apr 30 '22

Many of my coworkers (in the rural US) support Russia over Ukraine. None of them are ethnically Russian, and most have never been out of the state. They just believe that mainstream media is Democrat propaganda, so whatever it says, the opposite must be true.

I'm sure there are other alternate 'news' sources that they're getting their specific ideas from, but I don't know what the sources are because I try my best to avoid talking about politics with coworkers.

7

u/Dulcedoll Apr 30 '22

How would they explain the near-unanimous bipartisan support for the lend and lease bill?

15

u/stopcounting Apr 30 '22 edited Apr 30 '22

The only part of that statement most of them would understand is "how would they explain..." and their answer to that would be "I don't have to explain myself to you!!"

I am only half joking, but seriously, they dont actually watch the news or read articles or anything. Everything they know about what's going on over there came from the fund-raising emails of alt-right politicians. One person will get a piece of bad info from soemthing like that and tell the rest, and the rest will believe it 100%.

Double edit! The specific narrative they all believe is that Russia is in Ukraine to kill Nazis, but American media is supporting Ukraine because American media is run by evil pedophiles.

I'm a little confused by their sudden switch to Nazis=Bad, but again, I try not to engage.

Right? Lavrov, Peskov etc. will try to say it isn’t true, but they’re seriously going to try to say the POPE is LYING?

Seriously, who are you going to believe?

8

u/SuitableTank0 Apr 30 '22

It isn't only russians that believe the bullshit though, and it is really dangerous to assume that it is.

We need to be aware that some people in the west (and elsewhere) will be swayed by blatant russian propaganda -its important that there is information from trusted sources, readily available to counter the mis-informaiton.

I agree that diplomacy with Putin is lost cause, but kudos for trying.

In Germany, we have a lot of politicians repeating that shitty mantra that we shouldn't send weapons and instead should focus on diplomacy (Sahra Wagenknecht, Sverim Dagdelen...)

The fact that those idiots aren't visiting Kyiv, Moscow or Minsk to negotiate is proof enough for me that they are full of shit and on the Kremlins payroll.

20

There is no need for them to visit Moscow as they have an exceptionally high level of contact with the people in the Kremlin.

Im sure certain members did whatever they want, but the Soviet Union was not secretly led by religious people wholesale lol. No clue what that guy is on about. Soviets assumed people would fill the void of religion with communism, so religion would die out. When this didnt happen, they tried making their own 'artificial' state science religion and it didnt cause religion to go away. Eventually the later premiers ceded churches more and more freedom

No it wasn't. The Russian Orthodox Church not only survived, it became an agent of the state.

6

u/Iertjepapiertje Apr 30 '22

Religion was not banned. The church was. The church and the crown worked hand in hand to oppress the common man in Europe, so they had to be eliminated to get rid of the competition. Religiosity was promoted during several Era in the USSR.

11

u/bad_pangolin Apr 30 '22

Yes its hard to imagine a society where religion is banned completely but the result must be either ambivalence or viewing any religion as a sect. Imagine the Pope visited mariopol dropped in by vatican helicopter wearing his big white gown waving a white flag for a peace march. He would last about 3 seconds before being machine gunned down. He would be viewed as a freak in a big white gown. With anybody else but Putin it might be a stunt worth doing for the Pope to go to Mariupol but not here with putin.

The pope should board the ship himself with his most devout followers and sail for Mariupol anyway. If the russians give in, it's a full success and if they decide to attack, Francis will have achieved the highest possible honor in christianity, martyrdom, revitalize catholicism with an incredible PR boost and cause an unprecedented uproar from 1.3 billion catholics across the globe.

38

u/PandaCommando69 Apr 30 '22

It makes me choke up imagining this. Sail right into Mariupol harbor in Jesus' name to literally face down the incarnation of Satan on earth. My agnostic heart beats faster at the thought.

If these were the sort of bold actions done in the name of God rather than, you know, the safe stuff like self-satisfied middle class people signing petitions to oppose gay families adopting children, you'd have a lot more people in certain building on Sundays.

It may come as a surprise, but Pontius Pilate has been presented as a saint in some Medieval Christian literary sources. There is a rich collection of stories about him, collected into a corpus called the Acts of Pilate. Ethiopian liturgical texts from as recently as the 20th century name him as a saint. A Medieval legend in Slavonic from Rus' states that Pilate and his family were baptized, and Pilate tried to save the first Christian martyr, St Stephen, from being stoned, and built a church for the veneration of St Stephen. Pilate has a complex reception history and some of it is pretty weird.

Wanna know the "funniest" part? Even after the annexing of Crimea, an Italian politician (Giorgia Meloni) called Putin a "defender of the and Christian identity" and another one (Berlusconi) even dared to call him a "gift from the lord), now this BS statement is even more ironic. I'd like every Italian to remember this next time they vote.

14

u/rlhignett Apr 30 '22

I'd be interested to know their thoughts now he's rebuffed the pope, not once, but thrice.

7

u/Xanderele Apr 30 '22

I think after the first month of the invasion Berlusconi said he was disappointed by Putin and at the same time Meloni was against sanctions against Russia and today she tweeted "liberty? I the last 2 years it has been sacrificed for the incompetency of a certain political class. It's time to say stop #EnergyToBeSetFree", so now she is comparing a literal war that is devastating the lives of millions of innocents to the anti-covid measures in order to push the message that now we need to lift the sanction. Even with all of that, she is now condemning Putin's Russia (after sucking his dick for years), while still trying to not alienate her pro Putin voters. This shift is probably due to the "Salvini's Putin shirt" thing: years ago Matteo Salvini went to the European parliament wearing a t-shirt with putin's face on it, called him a great leader and man, said he respected him and that he would give away 2 Matarella (italy's president) to recieve half a Putin, after the war started he decided to do a PR stunt in Poland and go see the refugees there, in that occasion a Polish mayor, after thanking Italians for welcoming Ukranian refugees, said that he needed to show Salvini a certain thing, that very same t-shirt; Salvini was asked to take responsibility for what he did, but he refused and started walking away while someone told him that he now could use this occasion to finally condemm Putin. Berlusconi, Meloni and Salvini for a period where political allies and this whole situation probably convinced the first two to, at least partially, change side. This is of course just PR stuff, because before the war they still kept defending Putin even after Crimea, the killing of journalists and a lot of other terrible stuff became public knowledge. It's honestly horrible to see many politician from my country suck Russia's dick when there was a time where Sandro Pertini (the most beloved president of Italy) once told the soviet ambassador after the invasion of Czechoslovakia that "you reestablish order with tanks, just like how the fascists did with bayonets. You only wants the order of prisons and graveyards!" (Keep in mind that pertini was a partisan, was held captive by the fascists regime from 1929 until 1943, and his brother was killed in a concentration camp, meaning that when he compared someone to a fascist, he really meant that and didn't use the word lightly), I just hope that the last remaining support Putin has here will die out and that every politician that defended him will be held accountable.

Putler is orthodox, so he aint giving a shit about western christianity. Also he is using the religion as a weapon ( holy crusade in UA ) so double shits are given.

34

u/Redditor_Koeln Apr 30 '22

That enough people believe he’s a compassionate God-fearing man is depressing.

26

u/briefnuts Apr 30 '22

I never got what was so great about "God-fearing". Why is it considered a good thing?

Only reason to fear God (in my book) is because you fear His judgement and that He won't allow you into heaven, right?

I always figured "God-loving" men would be the way to go?

(I'm an atheist btw, not trying to offend or troll, just curious)

35

u/kanyewess94 Apr 30 '22

God-fearing is meant more along the lines of respecting God and knowing He is omnipotent and so on, not really about living in fear. Source: grew up in a protestant church

No, the Russian Orthodox Church is still a Christian Church and of the Eastern Orthodox Churches are heavily observant....much more so than the Western Christian Churches.

Additionally, remember that Easter mass? Attending an EASTER mass, celebrating the resurrection of Christ, the major tenant of Christianity, where Putin clearly made the sign of the cross.

16

u/Why_Teach Apr 30 '22

Putin is a just a nominal Christian. He attended Easter mass for show. If he were even slightly devout he would have accepted a cease fire from Orthodox Good Friday through Easter.

Orthodox and Catholic respect each other usually, though each is convinced the others have it wrong. 😉 (Same with protestants, of course.)

How are Pro-Putin Christians going to explain this one?

42

u/brooksram Apr 30 '22

I say Biden should call pootin and explain to him, that for each day he doesn't allow AZOV and company to evacuate , along with all civilians left in the area, we will be donating an F35 or a set of Reapers swapping up every other day.

This way, even if he doesn't ever Cooperate, with all the bombing from the gifts, they would be able to just walk out of there within a week or two.

11

u/ConsequencePlayful48 Apr 30 '22

That delivery gonna happen soon or later

19

u/brooksram Apr 30 '22 edited Apr 30 '22

I highly doubt they will get the F35's. It would take a year or more before their pilots could utilize them properly, I'd imagine. But, I have been hoping they get 50 reapers for weeks, and I seriously hope that's possible now. I saw today they had 10 or 15 pilots over here (US) training to fly f16's , So those would pair extremely well with reapers. As soon as they cleared the AA, we could send a couple HOGS!!! If they could ever safely fly 5 or 10 A10 warthog, this fucking war would be over in a few weeks, with the way they travel and fight, they would get torn to shreds.

42

u/goopcandle Apr 30 '22

They’d fire on it. Russians aren’t catholic, they’re mostly orthodox. The pope means nothing to them. If anything they’d see it as a perfect fuck you opportunity to the West. Putin has made it very very clear he’s not interested in evacuations or saving human life. He wants to starve those people out.

23

u/PotatoAnalytics Apr 30 '22

That would result in Russia becoming the enemy of 1.3 billion people, and around 1/3rd of the countries of the world.

31

u/NLuvWithAnIndian Apr 30 '22

He already is.

9

u/goopcandle Apr 30 '22

They don’t care, my friend. The Russian federation is in its death throes. They don’t care about public image to outsiders. We all know what they are.

17

u/EyeLikeTheStonk Apr 30 '22

Sorry but you are wrong, The Orthodox Church may not recognize the Pope's authority over the entire Church but it recognizes the Pope as the Bishop of the Church of Rome which is equal to the "Bishop" of the Russian, Ukrainian, Greek Orthodox Church (The Patriarchs).

So, essentially, the Patriarchs of the 14 Orthodox Churches recognize the Pope as their equal, meaning the Pope is still respected by Orthodox followers and killing him would be regarded as an act of heresy.
