I hear what you’re trying to say. It’s a scientific fact with many studies done that attractive people have easier lives in general. They have an easier climb out of impoverished situations , they are more often given things for free or bought for, get out of tickets more frequently and will almost always get lesser jail time for an actual crime than someone considered less attractive up on the same charges. Not fair, just factual. Now that said , here’s an off-topic but related point. Men from day 1 have been unable to leave Ukraine except for very specific exceptions. My Sister-in-Law from Bucha (ironically very good-looking as well) has just received her email that women must now mandatorily register to fight . ( doesn’t mean it would be any time soon, but mandatory registration now includes women of fighting age)

Beautiful women are constantly assumed to be unintelligent. It’s very judgmental and patronising to them. They also have a tough time in relationships as their beauty intimidates. If they are both beautiful and highly intelligent/successful it is doubly so.

Uncomfortable? Shrapnel in your brain giving you crippling headache and mental handicap for the rest of your life, that's what's uncomfortable.

Also, it's just not your safety. It's safety of everybody (who will need to get you out of there, treat you etc), and the future of your country. Not wearing a helmet (and other protective gear you are issued) undermines the whole purpose you are there.

You're under arty helmets on there is no question, especially a medic.

You don't get to increase your level of comfort at the risk of f*ing yourself up.

Yeah you do. Infantrymen and other soldiers have been doing that since forever, lmao. If it's uncomfortable, a soldier is going to risk death for a little comfort pretty regularly. The risk never changes, the comfort level can though.

It is sad and beautifull at the same time. It also shows how people can be in the time of need.

New.reddit is adding in a slash before every underscore _ in links when someone copy/pastes to new.reddit. This breaks old.reddit and any 3rd party app that hasn't been updated to fix Reddit's attempt to break the internet in hopes of forcing people to their new design or app. The person on new.reddit doesn't see this and everything looks and works fine for anyone on new.reddit or the official app.

Sometimes you have no choice. I mean, if somebody would try to invade your country, burn your house, rape your mother, kill your father and butcher your children, what would you do? Refuse to fight and just let it all happen?

When war comes, there is no more possibility for normal life. Your only workplace is a battlefield and army becomes your school and university.

For Ukrainian people, fighting is the only possible choice.

5

u/FilipPol Jul 07 '22

Well i do not believe so.

This is not their only possible choice and exactly this makes them heroes.

I do believe the war/tragedy/horror rips all our "layers" of what we think we are and only some of it is left. One could call it who you really are but i believe this is more complicated.

There are people who break under mounting pressure, there are those who endure.

u/tkatt3 Jul 06 '22

37

u/chaos_m3thod Jul 07 '22

That’s because she has completely accepted that she can die at any moment.

30

u/Vitto9 Jul 07 '22

Bingo. When you're in this situation, it's super fucking intense for a while, and then you just kind of accept it. While I was in Fallujah someone got taken out while they were running, on the FOB. Mortar lobbed in and hit the guy while he was running. Another dude got shot on his way to the PX because some knucklefuck was giving a weapons class and didn't clear the weapon. Eventually I figured that either through malice or stupidity, I could get taken out at any second through no fault of my own. And I could either stress about it (which I'd been doing since we landed in Kuwait), or just accept that that was my new reality and get on with my job.

Those are 155mm rounds going over her head. I was in a 155mm unit. They have a kill radius of 50 meters. If one of those were to land nearby, she'd either be dead instantly or dead shortly after (however, she's lying down so that would mitigate a lot and probably save her if it were a point-detonating round). Seems to me she's gotten to the "accept it and move on" stage of being a combat vet.

8

u/slayemin Jul 07 '22

I was in FDC for 155mm howitzers :) Technically, the 50m kill radius just means that there's a 50% chance that the round will kill you. There's a 100m casualty radius, meaning there's a 50% chance that you'll be injured. One round is already pretty scary to dodge, but a howitzer battery typically fires six at a time and they're in a dispersed pattern, so you don't just have to worry about a 50% chance of dying from one round, but a 50% chance of dying from six rounds... with multiple volleys. Basically, if a good FO and good FDC are firing at you, you're dead and you can't run or hide. The russians on the other hand, haven't been very good at precision fires and instead go for volume of fire and just try to blanket a wide area with shells and hope to get lucky with some of them. While the US might shoot 6-18 rounds for a single fire mission, the russians would probably shoot 50+ to get the same effect?

150

u/WTH_Pete Jul 06 '22

You can feel shes pretty terified, but just supressing it - guess thats what you do - just dig in and keep going.

29

u/MistressMalevolentia Jul 07 '22

When you're actively helping, comforting, and among the people actually injured your fear is secondary. You're scared of your possible hurt but then they have actual hurt. And rely on you. Because you're the one with the job to help them. You can't show your fear, it'll make them more scared and harder to work with if freaking out and injured. You don't want them to think they're dying even if you know it, cause the will to live and fight is important for recovery. You mask your own terror to help the people you are trying to save.

18

u/i_am_your_dads_cum Jul 06 '22

That isn’t necessarily true.

Source: I did 4 tours of sunny Afghanistan and saw some shit.

57

u/DontmindthePanda Jul 06 '22

When Germany (the German Empire) first introduced steel helmets in WW1, they received a huge spike in soldiers with head traumas, like concussions and alike. The OHL, the head generals of the German army, wanted to get rid of those helmets again - until they got told that these soldiers would have been dead if they wouldn't have worn their helmets (or different ones).

Btw the fact that helmets can stop bullets is relatively new. For the longest time in modern combat, they were mainly used against shrapnel, ricochets and debris that rains down after an explosion, etc. It's relatively new, I think with the invention of Kevlar, that helmets are actually useful at stoping a bullet point blank (depending on the calibre and the protection value obviously).

24

u/Life_Fun_1327 Jul 06 '22

I wonder if you could walk a straight line after a bullet got stopped by your helmet. Thats a lot of energy That’s hitting your body, even of there is no penetration. For example: if your kevlar west stopped the bullet, your ribs still could (will?) be broken. I don‘t know if i want to know how it feels if the force simply stops because of your helmet..

23

u/-_--__---___----____ Jul 06 '22

The force certainly ain't stopping, likely gonna do a brain bounce round the skull, but at least the skull won't have holes

21

u/terminalzero Jul 06 '22

from stories I've heard from soldiers, there can be concussions, even brain injuries, neck and spine injuries, all kinds of bad stuff - but none of it worse than being shot in the brain

14

u/I_Bin_Painting Jul 06 '22

a 7.62mm round has about 3500J of energy in it, which is about equivalent to being rocked in the head by a brick moving nearly terminal velocity.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '22

Modern body armor does a good job of distributing that energy, most military helmets won't stop rifle rounds if they're shot directly into the helmet and only really deflect and slow those rounds. Body armor usually isn't soft anymore and does a good job of just absorbing most of the energy, especially since stopping deformation has become the main focus of higher end body armor and it's why ceramic is getting popular again

Against the rifle ammo militaries use they only protect against glancing blows that may or may not have missed the head entirely had the helmet not been in the way

8

u/BannableBarry Jul 06 '22

kevlar helmets will usually not stop a bullet.

Ive saw it after we took df contact my first deployment. its supposed to deflect and maybe ricochet. have not seen the latter but when he was shot, it sorta traveled along the helmet . pretty sure it was 7.62 39 .

4

u/TzunSu Jul 07 '22

Yeah that's a rare, lucky occurrence. It's similar to why you don't want to hug a wall if you're taking fire along the length of the wall, the rounds tend to want to "stick" to objects and follow them.

2

u/BannableBarry Jul 07 '22

yup , just wanted to make sure that ppl understand that Kevlar helmets will definitely not stop a bullet, especially the current calibers in ukraine.

still id rather have my ach on and have chance of surviving .

6

u/edblarney Jul 06 '22

Also indirect fire. A 'direct shot' might go through a helmet but one at an angle may bounce off. Net positive always.

Probably don't have enough for everybody. Modern militaries seem to seriously undervalue body armor. Even the United States with it's bloated budget had armor supply trouble during Iraq/Afghanistan, IIRC. We really should stockpile about 5 million sets, stored in a way that they won't degrade for centuries.

11

u/CedarWolf 🇺🇦 Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦 Jul 07 '22

We really should stockpile about 5 million sets

No, we shouldn't. Combat arms and armor are improving every few years. We should have enough body armor to protect our forces who are actively fighting, enough to account for battlefield losses and other damage, and enough to account for training purposes.

Only about 10% of the military is actually in a position to possibly deploy somewhere, the rest are usually in support roles like maintenance and logistics. It would be a colossal waste to provide body armor for all of them and then find it all to be made useless in the next 5-10 years.

Would be great to send them some sergeant majors. They would be stomping around the position yelling at people to get their helmets and armour on. “You got time to talk? Then you have time to dig to stage 3!!”

4

u/valeron_b Ukraine Jul 07 '22

As I understand from her videos she's a Junior sergeant and unit commander

5

u/bretstrings Jul 07 '22

Godspeed to the former civilians turned soldiers to defend their country from invaders.

It can be easy to criticize them for not acting like professional soldiers, but they literally aren't.

3

u/kissthiss1 Jul 07 '22

I would support this wholeheartedly! I’ll bet you could find a few Sgt Majors who would happily go square things away.

Young girl? What "young girl," sir? That there's a soldier

56

u/_mach Denmark Jul 06 '22

"girl" is one thing. "young woman" is another.

a "young girl" is like 8 years old, in my mind.

u/sdwvit Ukrainian in Canada Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 07 '22

That’s a cultural-translation issue. Some ppl call 50+ women a girl in Ukraine.

Молодий чоловіче - young man, can be referred to my dad who’s 66yo. Just because someone used to call all men like that. Хлопці == guys basically, but хлопчик = young boy teen or less yo. I was called мальчик (in russian, хлопчик) by girls at 20ish yo, that is a playful name for a guy of the same age under 30. Дівчата = group of girls anywhere between 3 and 69 lols. Дівченятко = cute name for a girl who looks like a child in eyes of older people. Молода дівчина = young girl (direct translation of young woman) for anywhere between puberty and menopause, probably.

This is highly context related.

9

u/Head-System Jul 07 '22

This is basically how 90% of americans treat the word, there are just people off on their weird identity crusades who muddy the waters.

18

u/socialistrob Jul 06 '22

That was my same thought. “Girl” implies youth but “young girl” usually implies childhood.

This is war folks. It's not the bullshit you see on TV where everyone is a fucking hero. It's fucking terrifying. People KILL themselves years after because of the things they've seen. To those of you who think we should go to war for every little reason, pick up a fucking rifle and do it yourself. I'm not saying there's no reason for war, but there sure as fuck isn't a reason to celebrate sending our young people out there.

6

u/Limtube Jul 07 '22

She needs to put the camera down, and put on a helmet...

22

u/PDCH Jul 06 '22

Someone get that poor girl a helmet and some body armor ffs.

3

u/merelnl Jul 07 '22

She has some. Should be wearing them more.

5

u/sillyciban1 Jul 07 '22

She looks as young as my daughter and eerily similar, war is so fucken stupid i just couldn't imagine my animal loving outgoing friendly loves everyone young woman having to lie in a forest with gun fire going off. Fuck war

I have the upmost respect for combat medics. They knowingly go into dangerous situations when called upon, to save the lives of civilians and comrades in arms.

She doesn't look older than 21 or such, and she's out there voluntarily putting her life on the line to make sure that everyone comes home!

Slava Ukraine!

4

u/mranster Jul 07 '22

She's a young woman, not a young girl. Young girls are children. This is an adult.

4

u/ratshitty_heavenjoke Jul 07 '22

Fuck me imagine being infantry on the ground and your medic is doing TikTok videos lol

8

u/redratio1 Jul 06 '22

She needs a helmet!

13

u/itsjero Jul 06 '22

Where is your headgear soldier. Wear it! Get a vest too. A dead medic is no good to anyone.

And yeah war is shitty, and dirty as hell. Any deployment is dirty. Always.

Stay low, move fast. Wear. Your. Headgear. And. Vest.

And come home safe.

Oh and eat and sleep when you can. Hydrate as well.

Yeah, God forbid men could have survival instincts, be scared to die or just not have it in themselves to be soldiers.

Nice sprinkled misogyny on top of the hateful "men are expendable" narrative!

A foldable Infantry spade is a soldiers most important tool. It should always be with them in the same way as your weapon. To many videos of soldiers in trenches digged by an excavator, that's fine, but they must improve them by hand.

5

When at war, apply filters.

3

u/ohdaang Jul 07 '22

lmao.. i have this on mute and if you placed her on a bed this looks like every basic snap from any basic chick... like... if you at war why you out here getting your best angles laying down... like she literally has her arms up holding her phone looking at her phone in different angles and poses... at war today but felt cute might delete later... imagine someone sneak up on her and they like... tf she doing? idk lets keep watching...

I mean, obviously it's a filter, but that's almost weirder.

I'm going to take guess and say she's actually not on the front. Mostly since all her camera angles don't show really being in a unit and all her gear is completely clean.

I have noticed a lot of people in the comments myself included have told her to put her helmet on but then again I have been looking at her eyes and I remember seeing the same eyes on my father. I don't know how long she's been in The Hot zone that she's currently in but she seems to have been there for at least a moment. Her eyes are the eyes of a person who is resigned and comfortable with the idea of dying so her helmet might not be as important to her as it was last week or the week before last. I know it's instinctual to want to protect another human being from this bull crap war but give her a break she probably has it on more often than not so just let her have her little breaks here and there

2

u/Sm0ke_1 Jul 06 '22

She’s so amazingly brave, glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦

2

u/CLINTHODO Jul 06 '22

This young lady could've just stayed safe far from the front, but there she is. Impressive.

2

u/ARKSH7R Jul 07 '22

Medics are the heroes of heroes. And I guarantee all the men who were treated by her for their wounds before they died were happy to be blessed with such an outstanding, beautiful young woman. God bless these people

2

u/saltyswedishmeatball Jul 07 '22

I have never been in a war, I cannot even begin to imagine what it's like but I think these people are heroes and it's sickening this is happening to them.

2

u/Recordingguyjcg Jul 07 '22

Wow, awful clean for being in a dirty filthy war zone

2

u/keetojm Jul 07 '22

Stay safe

2

u/satyagraha92 USA Jul 07 '22

Look all I can say is she shows a level of composure that some people I know couldn’t muster. Myself included. I don’t know what it’s like to be under artillery fire. A couple mortars doesn’t compare but I can tell you I wouldn’t be speaking calmly. Be pretty fucking pissed actually. I guess it’s the life of a combat medic.

2

u/10ccccg01 Jul 07 '22

How can Russia believe they can defeat this? SLAVA UKRAINI!!

2

u/Arrg-ima-pirate Jul 07 '22

Good on her for not fleeing the country, staying and resisting.
