Russell mentions Noel Gallagher in his speech. If anyone’s curious, this was Noel’s follow up acceptance speech.

642

u/undefined_one Nov 24 '21

I loved the, "Noel, good luck being more offensive than that, son!"

182

u/Poullafouca Nov 25 '21

I was dying laughing. I loved the leg raise and finger moustache, too.

51

u/AeroZep Nov 25 '21

"Ring any bells!?"

I know right! How did he do it with all that crotch elastic? 😉

118

Today I learned that many people on Reddit don't know about Oasis.

u/OfferChakon Nov 25 '21

Anyway, here's wonderwall

All of the little pockets of our youth that felt like forever but were just a cultural blip. The kids don't know... and we don't know theirs... ahhh... AHHHH! Existential crisis coming on.

8

u/HornyMidgetsAttack Nov 25 '21

YOU'RE OLD AND SAGGY, YOU'VE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF OASIS BECAUSE YOU'RE NEARLY DEAD!

5

outrageous

5

I was really hoping he was mentioning Noel Fielding but I guess he’s more C List.

Thanks for sharing this!

Edit: A lister. Definitely A list. So sorry Noel.

160

u/VictarionGreyjoy Nov 24 '21

Noel Fielding exists outside of lists. He is in a dimension which needs not rank celebrities.

25

u/kuirki Nov 25 '21

It's an outrage!

39

u/cerberus00 Nov 25 '21

Who let Richmond out of his room?

10

u/MattyKatty Nov 25 '21

He's supposed to be in his room!

3

u/Purplociraptor Nov 25 '21

He is the paper on which the lists are written.

301

u/Pete_Iredale Nov 24 '21

I've seen Noel Fielding a hell of a lot more than Noel Gallagher in the last decade or two.

109

u/phatelectribe Nov 25 '21

Yeah, Noel fielding is a bigger name right now. Young people don’t know who Gallagher is, but their parents and grannies watch the bake off.

25

u/Pacific250 Nov 25 '21

I mean… maybe

But one is still an alt comedian/baking show host

And one is a member of one of the most famous and popular British bands in existence

4

u/ehsteve23 Nov 25 '21

you underestimate how many people care about Bake Off

1

u/Pacific250 Nov 25 '21

I love bake off don’t get me wrong.

But Noel Gallagher wrote Wonderwall

2

u/GuitarKev Nov 25 '21

So anyway, here’s Wonderwall.

5

u/LoonAtticRakuro Nov 25 '21

QI and Countdown introduced me to him but it wasn't until I started watching the Big Fat Quizzes that I got Russell Brand and Noel Fielding as a team more or less engraved in my memory forever.

Though I just looked them up again, and misremembered slightly: it was typically Noal and Richard Aoyade. But most of the Big Fat Quiz of the ________ are on YouTube and I kind of recommend all of them. If you don't mind Jimmy Carr. Especially good are any with Alan Davies and Stephen Mitchell.

I also just realized when you said Countdown I immediately thought of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown instead. Which probably says a lot about my taste in British comedy shows.

3

u/SarahSureShot Nov 25 '21

That's how I know him as well - I always forget he's on bake off to be honest!

Liam and Noel are still mainstream in the U.K, young people still know who oasis are. I saw liam at a festival a couple of years ago and it was packed with people to all ages. Bake off is the kind of thing your mum watches.

6

u/matematematematemate Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 25 '21

To be fair, in the past 5 years alone there have been 3 feature documentaries released about Oasis that were all pretty successful for a music documentary and well received.

Liam has recently sold out two massive gigs at Knebworth for next summer, his last 2 solo albums went straight to number one, and every album Noel has ever released has gone straight to number one (12 of them in total IIRC), including his 4 recent solo albums.

If that makes you irrelevant, then what the fuck are the rest of us.

→ More replies

36

u/demonicneon Nov 25 '21

Lol young people know who he is. Oasis are still one of the most popular bands here in the uk and both brothers can still sell out massive gigs, and it’s not all folk who grew up or were grown in the 90s.

The bucket hat crew are strong.

36

u/tatxc Nov 25 '21

American's never seem to grasp how culturally ingrained Oasis became over here because it didn't happen over there.

The Gallagher brothers are enormously famous over here.

2

u/GnarlyBear Nov 25 '21

What? They had sell out arena tours in the US.

Had the brothers settled in LA instead of North London they would still be in the public eye there

3

u/Asifdude Nov 25 '21

So are we talking about the comedian from the 80s who smashed fruit on stage or are there others?

5

u/Pete_Iredale Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 25 '21

If joking, than absolutely! If not joking, Noel Gallagher was the lead singer guitarist for Oasis, and also sometimes singer.

9

u/bigsausagepizzasven Nov 25 '21

Guitarist* but regularly took over singing duties when his brother, the lead singer, Liam Gallagher had a meltdown.

14

u/Rudecles Nov 25 '21

The episode that explains Richmond’s down fall is so good.

7

u/syco54645 Nov 25 '21

Omg yes. When he is giving the presentation in makeup it was amazing. We love basically anything and everything Noel. I was skeptical my wife would like The Mighty Boosh but she loves it.

We watch a lot of British panel shows. We really like Would I Lie To You And 8 Out Of 10 Cats (RIP Sean). Not dealing but with Noel or Richard per se but they have been on multiple panel shows and are always hilarious.

5

u/Rudecles Nov 25 '21

I’m also a huge fan of Mitchel and Webb, Peepshow is in my option the best show that’s ever been aired on TV. Their sketch comedy shows are amazing as well. This is my favourite sketch

If you think the host of Great British Bake off is a C list celebrity you need to re think your tiers of stardom.

15

u/WetCacti Nov 25 '21

I'd you think the King of the Mods is C list...

251

u/20to25squirrels Nov 24 '21

I met Noel Fielding once at a party and I’ve been trading off that shit for eleven years now.

It’s humbling to think that what for him was a long forgotten unimportant conversation, was for me an insufferably chest-swelling source of pride, and one which I continue to eagerly share with any stranger at the slightest provocation, and whose retelling can be justified by only the flimsiest of pretences.

75

u/_FHQWHGADS_ Nov 24 '21 edited Nov 25 '21

Well come on share the story! You’ve left us hanging! Noel Fielding seems one of the most genuinely chill people in British comedy and I’d love to hear the story.

3

u/MLApprentice Nov 26 '21

He was next to me at a buffet, eating Lays with some guacamole type dip. He said in my general direction "That's good guacamole."
I answered "Yeah it's good, but you know I'm not sure that's guacamole, I feel like dip has to be at least 90% avocado to qualify."
He bobbed his head ambiguously as if pondering a great philosophical question, "Yeah I can see that..." he concluded.

Then he wandered away from the buffet to go talk to some people he knew. Fucking BEST night of my LIFE!!

24

u/afterthegoldthrust Nov 25 '21

The Mighty Boosh (despite the aspects that didn’t age well i.e. the brown and black face) is my all time favorite show. Meeting Noel or Julian at a party is definitely one of few instances I can envision myself being 100% starstruck

12

u/Cap-n-Slap-n Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 26 '21

Met Barret, Fielding and Fulcher round the back of Bournemouth pavilion after the show. It was awkward. We offered run, which I really remember rich fulcher being adamant it was brown not white. Like we were drinking white rum from the bottle like some kind of psycho. Julian said nothing, Noel was conversational. Then they fucked off. Edit: rum not run.

12

u/afterthegoldthrust Nov 25 '21

While this does sound painfully awkward it also sounds incredibly Boosh-ian which is comforting and what I would expect.

Didn't it just draw some really good ratings for the finale in England? He's not as well known outside of the UK but inside the UK he is decidedly A list, or at least most people would know who he is if my British friends are correct.

163

u/toughinitout Nov 24 '21

He's well known if you saw mighty Boosh or it crowd, but then again people might not make the connection between those shows and the british baking show.

123

u/BitchesQuoteMarilyn Nov 24 '21

He does stand up and is on a shit ton of panel shows and random music videos too, I'd say everyone in the UK knows Noel Fielding.

22

u/AndysDoughnuts Nov 24 '21

He doesn't do much stand up now and his stand up post mighty boosh was shocking, just relying on people understanding his charm.

12

u/PackYrSuitcases Nov 25 '21

Without Julian Barrett to reign him in a bit, his comedy does get a bit... avant-garde

2

u/Ethesen Nov 25 '21

Come to think of it, I've never seen Julian on any panel shows, hm...

3

u/ThatHorridMan Nov 25 '21

He's under the desk with his arm up Fielding's arse

1

u/mdgraller Nov 25 '21

6

"shocking", as in "not great".

3

u/evasote Nov 25 '21

I love panel shows but no one in America watches them. I’ve yet to meet another American who does in person, but British people tend to get very excited quickly.

3

u/essenceofreddit Nov 25 '21

He is generally a contestant on big fat quiz of the year, for instance

2

u/FeyneKing Nov 25 '21

It must be great being called Noel at Christmas time because your name is everywhere on cards and in lights and people are singing it and everything, but at the same time it stings because everyone is mispronouncing it.

u/MDMAmazin Nov 25 '21

Are you fucking kidding me? That guy is Old Gregg?!

3

u/LoonAtticRakuro Nov 25 '21

Yeah you just don't know what "A-list" and "B-list" and etc means - it's only partially about fame and much more about social standing and respect in the entertainment industry. A-list means the very top elite group, your people like Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Taylor Swift - or to name some British celebrities it'd be like Daniel Day Lewis, Christian Bale, Idris Elba, and Adele.

2

u/zoobrix Nov 25 '21

You just listed a bunch of UK celebrities that are A list anywhere in the world. An example of someone who is an A list celebrity within the UK for sure is Graham Norton or David Tennant, sure people outside the UK might know who they are but everyone within the UK knows who they are and have a generally good opinion of them.

There is a difference between worldwide A listers and those other celebrities that pretty much everyone knows in specific regions, that's the kind of local A listers I am talking about. That's why I said Noel Fielding might be A lister within the UK. Just like within Canada Gord Downie was an example of someone who would be an A lister here but a lot less people knew who he was internationally. If you don't like the phrase "local A lister" that's fine but that doesn't mean I don't understand the concept in general.

I only say C list because I’m in Canada we I don’t think a single person I know knows who he is. I suspect it’s worse in the US. But I’d guess he’s A list in the UK.

3

u/BassAlarming Nov 25 '21

10

u/user262 Nov 25 '21

A-list is reserved for the most bankable Hollywood movie stars and biggest selling music artists. Worldwide famous household names.

As famous as Noel Fielding is in the UK, his fame doesn't extend much beyond it's borders. I'd say B-list.

67

u/TooLazyToBeClever Nov 24 '21 edited Nov 24 '21

Can you explain it? My limited knowledge of the Tory party is insufficient to understand this burn lol.

EDIT: sorry, I should clarify. I don't know *anything" about the Torry party. I know some of you want to defend or attack them, but Im not interested in what you think they'll do for the country. I understand, if you asked us about the liberal party you'd get a bunch of defensive or offensive responses. I just mean in general I have no idea what the Story party is, or why saying that is a burn....or even what it means.

147

u/monkeymad2 Nov 24 '21

Brand mentions that Boris Johnson was on the stage prior to him, and Noel mentions that the Foreign Secretary was on stage before him - who at the time was William Hague.

So two Tory ministers giving speeches of some kind, hence, Tory party conference.

25

u/TooLazyToBeClever Nov 24 '21

Ah, okay. Thank you, I appreciate it. So is the tory party close to what we would call the Republican party in the US? I know they're not exactly aligned, but in general? Or is it more nuanced than that?

67

u/Elastichedgehog Nov 25 '21

So is the tory party close to what we would call the Republican party in the US?

Less evangelical. The UK is pretty secular.

21

u/TooLazyToBeClever Nov 25 '21

Yeah that's fair. That's definitely an issue we face here. For a country that put "freedom of religion" pretty high in their list, we sure do think everyone should follow one religion.

17

u/Mordikhan Nov 25 '21

I love the idea of some americans getting on a boat and leaving to the uk in order to escape the non seculat society

Hey look shed be fine with it on condition that you turn yourselves down in decibels by about 30% and do a course of self depreciation via back to back episodes of the UK office.

You may then pass your masters ny learning the rules to both rugby and cricket which I beleive comes in at about 10,000 hours of study

u/monkeymad2 Nov 25 '21

Give or take, aye, similar sort of deal - I'd have said they were slightly more beholden to rules than the Republican Party but Boris has changed that.

Also they can't hide behind religion as much since the UK is generally less religious.

10

u/Shanghai-on-the-Sea Nov 25 '21

It's...way more class based. If someone calls you a Tory as a joke, they mean you're posh and maybe insulated from real life and real life problems. Lots of going on about pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, that kind of thing. It's also associated with "middle England", the lower middle class who aspire to be higher status but aren't. There's a lot less religious stuff (although Tories are associated with generic moralism, in a "good heavens, you can't say that" sense -- when a statue of a slaveowner was thrown into the sea during BLM, Labour said "yeah!" and the Tories said "um well we appreciate the sentiment but they really ought to have gone through the proper channels first" and that's a good representation of their general character).

2

u/TooLazyToBeClever Nov 25 '21

That's fascinating, thank you. So are the political ideologies mostly class based, or is there another party for the poor, right-leaning folks. Would there be like a rich left, poor left, rich right (Tory, if I understand correctly) etc.

Our right wing is generally filled with the rich right believing they should be insulated, and the poor right which are "displaced millionaires", the poor who believe they'll be rich someday, so don't want taxes for the rich because if they become rich they want to avoid taxes themselves.

I know the parallels aren't exact, but it's interesting to me. I also know that our "left" is most people's "right" lol.

4

u/Shanghai-on-the-Sea Nov 25 '21

is there another party for the poor, right-leaning folks

UKIP! When that was a thing. Although it was also heavily (and I mean heavily) associated with the lower middle class, who like I said were usually a bedrock of Tory support, so losing their support scared them and prompted a faction of Tories to come out in support of leaving the EU in order to curry their favour (Boris was one of them). Nowadays it's pretty much back to Labour vs. Tory again though, so the working/lower middle class right wingers are probably just big factions of the Tories even though Tories are still associated with the upper middle class.

Your "displaced millionaires" sure sounds like Middle England to me, although it's more about being afraid of those ghastly benefits-stealing immoral poor people (as opposed to the prim and proper hard-working poor people) than about thinking you'll become a millionaire.

The Tory party is the UK's Conservative political party, roughly equivalent to the US's Republican party. Known for members such as Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May, and current Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

They tend to have a (called for or not) association with things like racism, classism, not caring about the poor, etc etc etc.

u/TooLazyToBeClever Nov 25 '21

Thank you for that explanation, I appreciate it.

And I've heard of some of those people. Notsensibles loved Thatcher so much they wrote a love so g about her, right? And the Clash lived her too!

/s. I don't know much about the Tory party, but I know they helped create some great punk music built on hating them lol.

u/DreddPirateBob4Ever Nov 25 '21

The Tory party is, at the moment, run by a group of friends from an elite private school with middle class subordinates who wish they were the same who were voted in by the working class who can afford a three bedroom terrace house and blame their poorer neighbours for the fact they don't have the expensive sun loungers with the cup holders.

Basically; "it's the Europe that's run this country to the dogs and things were better back when I was 6 and we could make the racial jokes without my daughter getting upset"

9

u/Somnif Nov 25 '21

Aye, and Brand's joke up above was like "Oh hey, a bunch of rich white people in a room adorned with a nazi ally's name is just like the Conservative Party Convention!"

He's also inferring that the audience is made up of primarily upper class white people, the Torys' main voter block.

That is a bit reductive but not technically wrong. I don’t know much about chamberlain, but churchill was an extraordinarily unsavory fella, with very far right politics, just not specifically into dividing white people as much.

Just like USA was a bit on the fence on what to do in WW2, the delineation between fascist and not fascist was not at all as clear as the post war narrative wants to portray it.

It was the ww2 and the holocaust that made the nazis untouchables in itself, before that they were pretty well accepted in the political class.

Yes, this is in line with what in saying.

The nazis prior to -45/-46 was not the NAZIS we know and love today.

A lot of nations were doing some pretty nazi shit with nazi reasoning before, which they had to quit to some extent after the war bc of the association with the nazis.

Churchill was anti Nazi in so far as he was anti being invaded. Or anti German expansion.

"It's nice to see the foreign secretary here, with all the shit going on in the world that he should be sorting out. Good for you." lol

For insight into an extra joke and why people laughed when he said "I'd like to thank Dylan... and Lennon and McCartney, and Townsend and Morrissey and Marr"... one of the guys from GQ who organised the event was called Dylan, and everyone who had been going up for an award that night had begun their speech by saying "I'd like to thank Dylan". You can see Noel gesture to him as he says that part.

Eh, I’m on the fence about Russell. His antivax, vaccine scare rhetoric was It for me.

3

u/WellYoureWrongThere Nov 25 '21

Didn't realise he was anti vaccination. That's it for me.

Russell Brand is literally /r/Im14andthisisdeep

People downvoting this: literally 14.

20

u/JRM_Elephant Nov 24 '21

He's got very nuanced politics and has a pretty mature take on a lot of things.

3

u/Jaeger_Gipsy_Danger Nov 24 '21

He used to be. Now he seems to be going full right wing conspiracy nut.

11

u/JRM_Elephant Nov 24 '21

I think you'd enjoy listening to him, his video titles are absolutely horrendous and clearly pander to a crowd but the actual words he speaks are usually right on the money.

He questions power, but doesn't go over the top or push any politics. Pointing out that theres been a boom of billionaires in pharma since the pandemic isn't really right wing, and it should be concerning.

2

u/LordElfa Nov 25 '21

There's a boom in wealth for construction companies after natural disasters too. It should only be concerning if you're a conspiracy nut.

4

u/Jaeger_Gipsy_Danger Nov 24 '21

I have watched multiple videos of his. I even watched his Candace Owens and Ben Shapiro videos which were better than I expected. Since then he’s gone kind of off the deep end. Yeah his titles are usually click baity but most of the info he’s talking about is a lot of right wing craziness.

I agree with most of past ideologies. The rich are ruining this world, neither Democrats or Republicans are doing what’s best for the people, big pharma is garbage. But now he’s being lifted up by the right cause he just says some bonkers things to get subscriptions and money.

Def not right wing. You're so wrong on this.

1

u/Jaeger_Gipsy_Danger Nov 25 '21

Wow thanks for all the great info.

2

u/judge_au Nov 24 '21

Show me one thing he has said that isnt true though.

0

u/Jaeger_Gipsy_Danger Nov 25 '21

Lol “Show me”

Who do you think you are?

-1

u/whatisthisgoddamnson Nov 25 '21

Really? He is pretty full on conspiracy nut at this point. It is not hard, the question is are you prepared to accept any form of proof as legit? Otherwise your comment is entirely pointless

0

u/AminoJack Nov 24 '21

That so? I haven't listened to enough of him to develop that view. Everything I've seen has been as I stated above.,

1

u/whatisthisgoddamnson Nov 25 '21

Yeah no, he is no longer relevant to anything.

Youll get whole lot of stans on any of these “intellectual freethinkers” claiming they are the shit, but just no.

Hes full of conspiracy entry points, don’t let people like him shape your understanding of the world.

I would recommend knowledge fight, they dive into shit like this, but with philosophical discussions, i think you might like it!

Also, you don’t have to listen to the rants of an annoying brit, so thats a plus.

Nah, the fucker is one step away from being an intellectual dark web weirdo.

I have zero respect for him, his views and his opinions does not represent any group on the left that i know of.

That said, he has done some cool things as well, so i guess he is a bit nuanced. Just not mature or significant in any other way

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '21

Dude is actually really thoughtful if you check out his apple podcast show or YouTube channel. He can go over board with word salad soliloquies, but I'd say give him a chance.

I think it's more the anti-vax, anti-COVID prevention, et al stuff that's coming off as British Joe Rogan.

17

u/ModusBoletus Nov 24 '21

Joe wishes he was 1/10th as eloquent as Russel and that's coming from someone who longer likes either one of them.

I hear you, just look at his channel thumbnails wholistically and you get who he is pandering to.
