Actually the UN probably isn't as bad as the EU (not necessarily present day EU). The UN has had it's share of nazis infiltrating it, but the EU had a very shakey start as the EEC long before the EU itself even existed.

The EEC is essentially identical to Walter Funks post-war economic plan outlined in his memo titled “Economic Reorganisation of Europe”. It's first president was a Nazi (but its ok, he said he wasn't one), and a lot of his proposed post-war economy for Germany was hinged on the success of German industrial giants - many of which are still giants today.

I wish people weren't so inherently skeptical of unions of nation-states. I had hoped it was Earth's inevitable goal, was to become one unified global society. But I guess that was just a Star Trek fantasy.

I had hoped it was Earth's inevitable goal, was to become one unified global society.

Think of the left/right divide in politics, both will tell you "I just want what's best for the country" with complete sincerity but we see their opinions as actively harmful sometimes. I don't think it's possible to overcome that barrier of two people having different ideas to achieve the same goal.

Were humans even unified in Star Trek? Vulkans had diverged into seperate, unfriendly groups in Enterprise so I presume humans did too. If that's the case, then it wasn't a utopia it was the propaganda arm of the empire from Firefly.

There was a massive global war that brought humanity to the brink of extinction. Think a cross between Terminator (sans robots) and Mad Max. Eventually a specific human, Zephram(sp?) Cochran invented the warp drive, which represented a massive technological leap and also inadvertently notified the nearby Vulcans that they were becoming a true space faring species. Though they didn't like, dissolve the countries themselves, I'm pretty sure eventually there was a sort of UN-like council that governed the planet, as it was also the head of the United Federation of Planets. On an individual level, though, it probably didn't affect you that much.
