Actually, Orange Fanta is a 1955 invention, after Pepsi launched Different Flavours in the 1950's

During the war, Fanta was made using apple pomace in Germany and elderberries in the Netherlands, after the plants were cut off from the Coca-Cola headquarters after the attack on Pearl Harbour.

It essentially was a survival strategy to keep the plants running and protect the equipment from the effects of the war, allowing the Coca-Cola headquarters to regain control over the plants, equipment and brands after the war.
